Why Shoto Recommends This Tour

Tips and recommendations by our official guides

Create your own one-of-a-kind Mount Fuji hanging scroll in this fun, hands-on workshop that blends Japan’s beloved “JAPAN BLUE” indigo dyeing with traditional ukiyo-e–style design. You’ll learn how to dye a tenugui cloth using four different shibori techniques and then choose a classic Mt. Fuji or Japanese motif to silk-screen onto your indigo creation. The result is a truly personal artwork you can hang like a Japanese scroll or use as a stylish tenugui—an unforgettable souvenir found only here.

Behind this experience is the history of “JAPAN BLUE,” the deep indigo color that became iconic in Japan during the Edo period. It colored everyday clothing, noren curtains, and fine crafts throughout the country. Indigo dyeing and shibori techniques allowed artisans to create endless patterns and shades, each representing a unique expression of Japanese culture. In this workshop, you’ll learn how these traditional methods are still used today while creating your own indigo-dyed tenugui. After dyeing, you’ll apply a silk-screen print inspired by ukiyo-e artwork—just as people in the Edo period displayed prints in their homes. It’s a rare chance to make a piece of art that reflects both heritage and your own creativity.

This experience is perfect for travelers who want a memorable Mt. Fuji–themed souvenir, art lovers curious about Japanese dyeing traditions, and anyone seeking a creative activity to enjoy with partners, friends, or family. Solo travelers are also warmly welcomed—many participants join on their own, so it’s easy to relax and enjoy. It’s especially great for visitors planning a trip to Mt. Fuji who want something meaningful to complement the sightseeing experience.

You don’t need to speak Japanese to an instructor—your friendly local guide will translate, assist, and support you step by step so you can enjoy the workshop with confidence. Everything you need for the experience is included in the tour fee, and if you’d like to dye or silk-screen additional items such as clothing or personal belongings, optional add-ons are available for an extra charge. Whether you’re passionate about art, curious about Japanese culture, or simply looking for a creative keepsake, this workshop offers a fun and worry-free way to make your own Japan Blue masterpiece.

This workshop takes place inside a rescue cat café, so please let us know in advance if you have any cat allergies. If your symptoms are mild, we can provide special arrangements to help you enjoy the experience. However, please note that in cases of severe allergies, we may need to decline your participation for safety reasons. Thank you for your understanding.

Discover JAPAN BLUE & Design Your Indigo Art

Begin your experience by meeting your friendly local guide, who will introduce you to the history and meaning of “JAPAN BLUE,” Japan’s iconic indigo color cherished since the Edo period. You’ll receive your own tenugui cloth and choose from various shibori techniques to create your dyeing pattern. While looking at sample artworks and silk-screen motifs, decide on the design direction of your one-of-a-kind piece before you start folding, tying, and preparing your cloth for dyeing.

Dip, Dye & Reveal Your Handmade Indigo

Once your shibori preparation is done, it’s time to dip your tenugui into the indigo vat. Watch as the cloth transforms from greenish tones into deep JAPAN BLUE as it oxidizes in the air—a magical moment unique to indigo dyeing. Rinse the fabric, remove the strings and rubber bands, and enjoy the excitement of seeing the unexpected patterns you've created. Every fold and knot produces a different design, making your piece truly one of a kind.

Silk-Screen Your Ukiyo-e Motif & Finish Your Japanese Scroll

After dyeing, your tenugui is dried and ironed smooth, ready for the next creative step. Choose from Mount Fuji, traditional ukiyo-e characters, plants, or other Japanese-inspired motifs to silk-screen onto your indigo base. Combine elements to match your style and create an artwork that reflects both tradition and your personal touch. Once the printing is set and ironed again, your original Japanese hanging scroll is complete. Capture a commemorative photo and take home a unique souvenir made only here.
