Fireworks events in Osaka and Kyoto to be held in 2025
Kyoto Art Fireworks
The Kyoto Art Fireworks is a magnificent fireworks display held in the Fushimi district area of Kyoto. Top-level fireworks craftsmen gather to launch about 13,000 artistic fireworks over a 60-minute period. It's a special opportunity to view rare fireworks launched at a racecourse, making this event unique in Japan's fireworks calendar.
The highlight of the Kyoto Art Fireworks event is the many artistic fireworks launched at the beautiful venue. The venue is Kyoto Racecourse, which is said to be the most beautiful racecourse in Japan. Colorful and delicate fireworks are launched with perfect timing on the beautiful grass field, also matching the atmosphere of the flowing music.
When I went last year, there was a wide range of music genres from J-POP to Western music and classical masterpieces, and I thoroughly enjoyed the fireworks show synchronized with the music.
This is a paid-seating event, and tickets are required to view the fireworks. If you want to see high-level fireworks, please participate in the Kyoto Art Fireworks event for an unforgettable evening in Kyoto.

The Tenjin Festival Dedication Fireworks is a magnificent display launched during the finale of the Tenjin Festival, one of Japan's three greatest festivals. This spectacular Osaka fireworks event attracts approximately 1.3 million visitors and offers a special opportunity to enjoy pyrotechnics at a prestigious Kansai celebration that has continued for over 1,000 years.
The highlight of the Tenjin Festival fireworks is the beautiful scenery created by approximately 100 traditional boats and colorful explosions illuminating the night sky. On the evening of July 25th, during the festival's climax, a ritual called the "Boat procession" takes place, where 100 vessels cross the Okawa River flowing through Osaka.
Coinciding with this ceremony, 3,000 fireworks brilliantly light up the sky. The traditional lanterns and bonfires illuminating the historic fleet combined with the dazzling fireworks overhead create an iconic summer scene in Osaka.

A grand fireworks event is also held in July at Oohama Park in Sakai, Osaka. During the annual Sakai Ōuo Night Market, fireworks illuminate the sky for approximately 30 minutes as the event's climax. Enjoy this special fireworks display at Osaka's traditional fish Night Market, which has continued for 700 years.
The Sakai Ōuo Night Market fireworks are launched in the U-shaped old Sakai port, allowing you to view large fireworks up close from any seat. This is an all-paid admission fireworks event where every seat includes one complimentary drink. You can also choose cushioned seats or VIP options for added comfort.
When I attended, I found it very comfortable to be able to relax and watch the fireworks while enjoying a cold drink without worrying about crowds.

Amanohashidate Town Lights (Kyoto)
Amanohashidate Town Lights is an event held in the Amanohashidate area of Miyazu City, Kyoto. Amanohashidate is one of Japan's most spectacular scenic spots, featuring a beautiful white sandbar lined with pine trees. During the Amanohashidate Town Lights event, the beach is illuminated for three months, and a fireworks event called Miyazu BAY Fireworks is also held.
The charm of Miyazu BAY Fireworks is that you can enjoy fireworks at one of the nation's most breathtaking scenic spots, considered one of Japan's Three Scenic Views. Unlike the larger fireworks displays you might find in Osaka, Kyoto's events offer a more intimate experience with natural beauty. The fireworks are held for five days in July and August, with 75 fireworks launched for 5 minutes each day at 8:30 PM. Cruises touring Miyazu Bay are also available for fireworks viewing.
My recommendation is to watch the fireworks from the beautifully illuminated beach. Please enjoy these summer fireworks amidst the classic Japanese landscape of white sand and pine trees that has been beloved in Japan for centuries.

At the Ayabe Minazuki Festival, you can enjoy both the brilliant lights of fireworks and the fantastical glow of lanterns. Before the fireworks, about 10,000 lanterns are floated on the beautiful Yura River flowing through Ayabe. After enjoying the soft lights of the lanterns, you can then experience the fireworks brilliantly illuminating both the night sky and the water's surface.
The Ayabe Minazuki Festival is a traditional Ayabe festival that has continued for 100 years. There are also food stalls enjoyable for everyone from adults to children, along with local summer festivals.
At the Taiza Port Festival, you can enjoy fireworks and summer festivals in a traditional Japanese fishing port town. Taiza has flourished as a Kyoto fishing port since ancient times. During the festival, the lights of fishing boats docked at the port are all lit up together with the fireworks.
The fishing boat lights and fireworks reflect on the port's sea surface, brilliantly illuminating the normally quiet town. This creates an atmosphere quite different from the urban fireworks events you might attend in Osaka. During the day, there's also a parade of floats carrying ship objects, and at night, numerous food stalls are open. Please enjoy the atmosphere of this traditional summer festival and fireworks in a fishing port town.

Maizuru Port Chatta Fireworks Festival (Kyoto)
Source:Sankei Shimbun
The Maizuru Port Chatta Fireworks Festival is a fireworks display held in Maizuru City, Kyoto. It is held annually on the last Saturday and Sunday of July. Approximately 4,000 fireworks are launched over 40 minutes, making this a special event where you can enjoy fireworks together with Maizuru's beautiful sea and cityscape.
Maizuru City is located in northern Kyoto, facing the sea called Wakasa Bay. The fireworks launched at Maizuru Port echo off the mountains surrounding Wakasa Bay, creating beautiful sounds. While Osaka's fireworks events might be larger in scale, this Kyoto event offers a unique acoustic experience. In Japan, the sound of fireworks is also culturally enjoyed as a symbol of summer.
Try to slowly appreciate the various sounds—the launching sound, the sound of fireworks blooming, and the lingering echo after they open—as they resonate against the mountains.
Many food and game stalls are also set up, allowing you to purchase food such as yakisoba and cotton candy. Join the locals in fully enjoying Maizuru's summer festival and fireworks event that the regional community looks forward to each year.

Otsu Shiga Fireworks Festival (Shiga)
Source:Official website
The Otsu Shiga Fireworks Festival is a spectacular fireworks event held in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, home to the famous Lake Biwa. Approximately 2,000 fireworks are launched over the lake, creating magical reflections on the water's surface. Just a short trip from Kyoto, this event provides a serene alternative to the busier fireworks displays in the region.
The Otsu Shiga Fireworks Festival is an event where you can enjoy the beautiful Lake Biwa—Shiga Prefecture's pride—combined with stunning fireworks. What particularly stayed in my memory when I visited was the fantastical contrast between the dark mountains surrounding Lake Biwa, the lake's surface, and the brilliant fireworks display.
Additionally, the beautiful sound of Lake Biwa's waves between the fireworks was soothing and healing. Compared to other fireworks events held at Lake Biwa, this one is relatively small-scale, allowing you to enjoy the fireworks in a relaxed atmosphere. I recommend sitting on the soft sandy beach of Lake Biwa to experience this magical combination of fireworks and lake—a scene you might also appreciate if you've enjoyed similar events near Kyoto or Osaka.

The Kameoka Peace Festival Hozugawa Citizen Fireworks is an annual fireworks display held in Kameoka City, Kyoto. Approximately 13,000 fireworks are launched to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives in all past wars and to pray for world peace.
The Hozugawa Citizen Fireworks is the largest event in Kameoka City, a large-scale fireworks display where over 10,000 fireworks are launched in sync with music. What particularly moved me was the large firework called "Nishakudama." This massive firework, with a diameter of about 480 meters, blooms in the night sky, creating an unforgettable, breathtaking sight.
There is also a drone show where lights are drawn in the night sky by 500 drones, making this Kyoto fireworks event exceptionally satisfying. The event requires paid seating, and tickets are necessary to view the fireworks.

Additionally, each launched firework has a title such as "Wind God" or "Thunder God," and having these themed fireworks makes watching them enjoyable.

The highlight of this Kyoto event is that you can observe a famous ceremony held during Obon, a traditional Japanese summer event, along with fireworks. In Japan, it is believed that the spirits of ancestors return to this world in summer, and this period is called Obon. In Miyazu, to send the spirits back to the afterworld, boats and lanterns are set afloat on the sea at the end of Obon.
Boats and lanterns, believed to carry the spirits of ancestors, float on the night sea, while fireworks shine over the water. It's a uniquely Japanese scene that feels both festive and sacred in its beauty.

In Kyotamba town in Kyoto, a local summer festival is held in August, featuring an impressive 2,000 fireworks launched into the night sky. The town fills with traditional Japanese summer festival food stalls and entertaining stage shows.
The Kyotamba Fireworks Festival is a wonderful event where tourists can experience an authentic local summer festival in a charming small town. Unlike the larger fireworks events in Kyoto or Osaka, this offers a more intimate atmosphere.
Kyotamba is a peaceful town surrounded by mountains and blessed with abundant nature. The fireworks event is the town's major summer highlight, attracting both locals and visitors from across the Kyoto region.
The shopping district is decorated with colorful Tanabata ornaments, adding to the festive summer atmosphere. When I visited, despite the lively environment, it wasn't overly crowded, allowing me to sit comfortably alongside locals and enjoy the fireworks display at a relaxed pace.

Sennichi-kai Tourism Festival (Kyoto)
The Sennichi-kai Tourism Festival is a traditional Kyoto event that has continued for nearly 70 years in Kyotango City. This spectacular fireworks event takes place around Kumihama Park and Hama Park, featuring approximately 1,700 fireworks. What makes this festival unique is that it combines fireworks with lantern floating and the mountain Daimonji burning ceremonies.
At the Sennichi-kai Tourism Festival, visitors can enjoy the Obon traditional event where kanji characters are drawn on the mountain with torches (Daimonji burning), alongside the brilliant fireworks display. There's a local legend that praying to the Kannon statue at Nyoiji Temple in Kyotango City on August 9 brings 1,000 days of good fortune - making this an auspicious day to visit Kyoto.
The fireworks, Daimonji burning, and lantern floating ceremonies are all conducted on the same day to honor ancestors and welcome worshippers. The sight of fireworks launching against the backdrop of illuminated characters on the mountainside creates a scene that is both spectacular and spiritually moving - quite different from the urban fireworks events you might see in Osaka.
The fireworks, lantern floating, and Daimonji burning usually begin around 7:30 PM. This is a perfect opportunity to observe important Japanese Obon ceremonies while enjoying a magnificent fireworks display in the scenic Kyoto countryside.

The Lake Biwa Grand Fireworks Festival is a spectacular event held at Lake Biwa in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, not far from Kyoto and Osaka. This impressive fireworks display launches about 10,000 fireworks in just one hour, creating a magnificent reflection on Lake Biwa's surface.
This festival stands as one of the most exciting fireworks events in the region. When I attended, the sheer volume of fireworks launching into the sky was breathtaking, and the way they illuminated Lake Biwa's surface throughout the event created a magical atmosphere that you won't find at urban fireworks displays in Osaka or Kyoto city centers.
Sitting on the lake's beach while enjoying these spectacular fireworks will surely become an unforgettable summer memory for any tourist. Itami Fireworks Festival (Hyogo)
Source:Gogai net
The Itami Fireworks Festival is a beloved event that has been held for many years in Itami City, Hyogo Prefecture. Located near Osaka International Airport, this fireworks display features about 3,500 colorful bursts launched over the riverbed around Kozu Bridge.
While not as massive as some Osaka or Kyoto fireworks events, the Itami Fireworks Festival offers exceptional quality over its 60-minute duration. Various types of fireworks are synchronized with music, and the reflection of these colorful explosions on the river's surface creates a double layer of beauty that makes this event particularly charming.
The finale is especially noteworthy, featuring cascading fireworks that hang in the air like weeping willows, creating a lingering beauty that many visitors from Osaka and Kyoto make special trips to witness.
One advantage of this event is that the riverbed viewing area is access-controlled, providing comfortable space to sit and enjoy the show. After the fireworks conclude, expect some congestion as attendees leave the venue.
