How to Get to Amano Hashidate from Kyoto?

There are three ways to get from Kyoto Station to Amano Hashidate: limited express train, regular train, and bus.

Option 1: Limited Express Train
The first option is to take the JR Limited Express Hashidate from Kyoto Station. The advantage is that you can move according to schedule and access in a short time.
- Travel time: About 2 hours
- Cost: 5,000 yen one way

Option 2: Regular Train
The second option is to take regular trains with 3 transfers as follows. The advantage is that it's reasonable, but there's a possibility of getting lost due to the 3 transfers.

Route:
- Kyoto Station (about 2 hours)
- ↓
- Fukuchiyama Station (about 45 minutes)
- ↓
- Miyazu Station (6 minutes)
- ↓
- Amano Hashidate Station

- Travel time: About 3 hours 15 minutes
- Cost: 2,320 yen one way

Option 3: Express Bus
The third option is to use an express bus. This is my recommended option because the travel time is short and the cost is reasonable. However, the travel time varies depending on road traffic conditions. Therefore, when time is limited, it's better to use the train.
- Travel time: About 2 hours
- Cost: From 3,200 yen

The Charm of Amano Hashidate

160620252050_image23.jpg

Amano Hashidate is a sand bar located in Miyazu Bay, Kyoto Prefecture. It's a beautiful spot counted as one of Japan's Three Scenic Views, with pine tree-lined paths stretching for approximately 3.6 kilometers. The long sand bar extends into the sea, and it was named Amano Hashidate because it looks exactly like a bridge spanning to heaven.

The attractive point is that you can enjoy different beauty from both the south and north sides. Depending on the angle, it looks like a dragon soaring up.

Around Amano Hashidate, there are many attractions such as shrines and temples, restaurants where you can taste fresh seafood, and hot springs, so you can enjoy it all day long. It's an area where you can enjoy both Japanese culture and nature.

One-day Itinerary to Fully Enjoy "Amano Hashidate," One of Kyoto's Premier Tourist Destinations

8:00 AM: Departure from Kyoto

160620252050_image26.png

First, let's depart from Kyoto Station in the morning.

Before departing from Kyoto, research in advance the operating hours of transportation and facilities you plan to use at Amano Hashidate. Kyoto Station is particularly crowded during morning hours, so head there with plenty of time to spare.

Regarding transportation, if you plan including the return train or bus times, you can act by working backwards from the return time at the destination. If you also check the operating hours of local restaurants and tourist facilities, you can use your time without waste.

Also, since Amano Hashidate is a nature-rich area, it's recommended to go wearing comfortable walking shoes.

10:30AM: Admire the Panoramic View of Amano Hashidate from Amanohashidate Viewland

With a Specific Pose, Amano Hashidate Appears as a Flying Dragon

160620252050_image25.jpg

At Amanohashidate Viewland, if you turn your back to Amano Hashidate, bend at the waist, and look at the scenery upside down through your legs, Amano Hashidate appears like a dragon ascending to heaven.

Taking this pose reverses the positions of the sea and sky, making the green row of pine trees look like a dragon floating in the air. There are seven observation spots set up throughout the park, each offering the dragon's appearance from different angles. I recommend visiting all seven locations during your one day trip itinerary from Kyoto.

I Recommend Also Enjoying the Ferris Wheel and Cycle Cars

At Amanohashidate Viewland, I also recommend enjoying attractions like the ferris wheel and cycle cars, which allow you to view the scenery from various heights and angles - a perfect addition to your one day trip itinerary from Kyoto to Amano Hashidate.

The ferris wheel offers about 4.5 minutes of aerial sightseeing while providing views of the Kurita Peninsula, Miyazu city area, and even the distant town of Ine. The cycle cars allow two people to pedal together while leisurely enjoying the scenery.

Both attractions offer a private atmosphere while enjoying the views, making them perfect for couples and families visiting on their one day trip itinerary from Kyoto.

Here, I'll introduce restaurants where you can simultaneously enjoy local ingredient-based cuisine and views of Amano Hashidate.

Hashidate Chaya is a restaurant located within Amanohashidate Park, where you can dine in a nature-rich space surrounded by pine trees.

Hashidate Chaya's specialty is the "Asari-don" (clam rice bowl), generously topped with fresh clams from Amano Hashidate. It's a dish where you can taste the umami of the shellfish with every bite, and it's one of my favorite gourmet experiences during a one day trip itinerary from Kyoto to Amano Hashidate.

At Hashidate Chaya, you can dine both indoors and outdoors, relaxing while gazing at the sea. If you want to savor local specialties while enjoying the scenery during your one day trip from Kyoto, definitely visit Hashidate Chaya.

Taikyourou Agura is a Japanese restaurant located inside "Taikyoro", the accommodation closest to Amano Hashidate, making it an ideal lunch spot for your one day trip itinerary from Kyoto to Amano Hashidate. This restaurant offers dining while viewing Amano Hashidate and the pine tree-lined avenue, creating the perfect setting to appreciate your destination after the journey from Kyoto. You can enjoy cuisine centered around local mountain and sea delicacies that represent the authentic flavors of this region.

Among their dishes, my recommendation is the seafood bowl featuring various types of seafood. The appeal lies in using the most delicious seafood of each season, including clams and oysters that are 2-3 times larger than usual - a true highlight worth traveling from Kyoto for.

The interior of Taikyourou Agura has a traditional Japanese atmosphere, so it's recommended for those who want to spend relaxing time in a calm space during their day trip from Kyoto.

At the counter seats inside, you can enjoy your meal while viewing Amano Hashidate through large windows, making every moment of your one day journey memorable.

For Sesshuan's lunch menu, the daily plate using fresh seafood and the sushi plate are popular choices that perfectly complement your travel itinerary. In particular, I recommend the sushi plate that comes with sushi made from the most delicious fish of the season, along with Japanese side dishes and fried items.

160620252050_image13.png

For those planning a one day trip itinerary from Kyoto to Amano Hashidate, consider experiencing authentic Japanese food in Kyoto either before departing or upon your return. The Kyoto Night Gourmet Tour is a tour where you can deeply learn about Kyoto's food culture by visiting restaurants in Gion and Pontocho, making it an excellent addition to extend your day trip experience.

A friendly local guide will lead you to three shops that are difficult for tourists to find on their own, perfect for those wanting to maximize their time in the Kyoto area.

The attractive point of the tour that I recommend is the sake tasting experience where you can compare three types of Kyoto-produced Japanese sake. You can enjoy alcohol while tasting dishes characterized by seasoning that makes the most of the ingredients, so you can savor both drinks and gourmet food - an ideal way to conclude your Amano Hashidate day trip.

At restaurants, the guide will support your ordering, so even those who are concerned about language can participate with peace of mind. Those interested in Kyoto's food culture should definitely try participating in the tour as part of their complete Kyoto to Amano Hashidate travel experience.

After enjoying a delicious lunch, let's move to the north side of Amano Hashidate and tour the must-see tourist attractions, continuing the perfect afternoon portion of your one day trip from Kyoto. On the north side of Amano Hashidate, there are power spots centered around shrines and temples, as well as spectacular viewpoints that justify the entire journey from Kyoto.

Please find spots that interest you and try incorporating them into your day trip itinerary to make the most of your limited time.

Amanohashidate Kasamatsu Park - The Crown Jewel of Your Day Trip

160620252050_image4.jpg

Amanohashidate Kasamatsu Park is a park located on the middle slope of Nariaisan, and it's the ultimate viewpoint for your one day trip from Kyoto to Amano Hashidate. This spot offers the most famous panoramic view that makes the entire journey worthwhile.

The view from Amanohashidate Kasamatsu Park is famous for making Amano Hashidate look like a dragon ascending toward the sky - this iconic perspective is often the main reason travelers include Amano Hashidate in their Kyoto day trip itinerary.

Within the park, there are restaurants where you can see not only Amano Hashidate but also Aso Sea and Miyazu Bay, as well as a sky deck with a glass floor, making it perfect when you want to spend quality time during your day trip experience. Viewing the scenery while feeling the wind on the sky deck is my favorite way to conclude a successful day trip from Kyoto.

Nariaiji Temple

160620252050_image11.jpg

Nariaiji Temple is renowned as one of only five "places where saints dwell" in Japan. The Buddha enshrined here is known as the Beauty Kannon, and it is believed that worshipping here will make you beautiful in both body and mind. Within the temple grounds, there is a Jizo statue that is said to grant any wish if you make a single request in one word. If you have something you want to come true, please try chanting your wish when you visit.

What I find most attractive about Nariaiji Temple is that you can see beautiful nature no matter what season you visit during your one day trip itinerary from Kyoto to Amano Hashidate. The collaboration between nature and the temple buildings—spring cherry blossoms, summer green leaves, and autumn foliage—creates stunning scenery, so please capture these moments in photographs.

Motoise Kono Jinja

160620252050_image2.jpg

Motoise Kono Jinja is a prestigious shrine where it is said that the gods enshrined at Ise Shrine in Mie Prefecture—considered Japan's most important shrine—were originally moved from this location.

According to ancient Japanese mythology, Motoise Kono Jinja is described as a place for successful matchmaking that connects male and female deities, making it popular with those seeking to improve their luck in love.

My favorite highlight of Motoise Kono Jinja is the "suikinkutsu" (a Japanese garden device for enjoying water sounds) where you can hear the sound of water flowing underground within the shrine grounds. The time spent listening to the mystical sounds of the suikinkutsu, which soothes the solemn atmosphere of the shrine, is truly healing.

This shrine is recommended for those who want to pray for improved luck in love or wish to visit a historically significant shrine during their one day trip itinerary from Kyoto to Amano Hashidate.

Manai Shrine

160620252050_image21.png
Source:Amano Hashidate

Manai Shrine is located in the depths behind Motoise Kono Jinja.

Since it lies in the opposite direction from the main tourist areas, few people visit, and it remains a sacred space always enveloped in tranquility. In recent years, it has become known as a power spot, and visitors can feel a mystical atmosphere within the grounds surrounded by trees.

In front of Manai Shrine's torii gate, sacred water called "Ten no Manai no Mizu" (Heavenly True Well Water) springs forth. Legend tells that the gods brought this water down from the sky in a golden bowl, and many tourists come specifically seeking this sacred water.

If you're interested in mystical spots, please visit this shrine together with Motoise Kono Jinja during your itinerary.

After enjoying sightseeing on the north side of Amano Hashidate, let's cross the sandbar and return to the south side—a perfect continuation of your one day trip itinerary from Kyoto to Amano Hashidate.

Amano Hashidate, stretching 3.6 kilometers in length, takes approximately 70 minutes to cross on foot or about 20 minutes by bicycle. If you plan to cross, I recommend renting a bicycle for the traverse.

Bicycle rental shops are available on both the north and south sides, and you can rent on the north side and return the bicycle on the south side. At approximately 500 yen for 2 hours, you can enjoy stopping at various tourist spots along the way.

Time and Cost: Approximately 500 yen for 2 hours
Rental Return Locations: Amanohashidate Pier, Ichinomiya Pier

Must-See Tourist Destination: Tango-Amanohashidate-Ōeyama Quasi-National Park

160620252050_image14.png
Source:Kyoto City

Tango-Amanohashidate-Ōeyama Quasi-National Park is a quasi-national park featuring beautiful continuous coastlines.

Within the park, "Kotohikihama," designated as a national natural monument, is especially recommended. When you walk on the sand, it produces a "squeak squeak" sound, making it famous as Japan's largest singing sand beach.

My favorite spot within the park is "Ōnari Kofun," where you can look down from above at "Tateiiwa," a giant monolithic rock standing 20 meters high. Well-maintained walking paths allow you to enjoy panoramic views of the Sea of Japan, making it perfect for leisurely strolls and photography.

Tango-Amanohashidate-Ōeyama Quasi-National Park is recommended for nature lovers, those interested in geology, or anyone wanting to see spectacular ocean views as part of their one day trip itinerary from Kyoto to Amano Hashidate.

Must-See Tourist Destination 2: Amanohashidate Shrine

160620252050_image20.jpg

Amanohashidate Shrine is a shrine that quietly stands among the pine tree-lined paths of Amano Hashidate.

Known as the central shrine of Amano Hashidate, where many legends about dragons remain, it is said that if you visit all three shrines together with the nearby Motoise Kono Jinja and Manai Shrine, your romantic wishes will come true. Therefore, many people wishing for love fulfillment and couples visit here.

The grounds of Amanohashidate Shrine offer a peaceful atmosphere, making it perfect when you want to quietly feel the shrine's solemn atmosphere in a space surrounded by greenery. If you want to boost your romantic fortune, definitely visit this place.

Must-See Tourist Destination 3: Isoshimizu

160620252050_image22.png
Source:Amano Hashidate

Isoshimizu is a natural spring located next to Amanohashidate Shrine.

Despite being surrounded by seawater on all sides, this unusual well where fresh water springs forth has been cherished since ancient times as mystical famous water. It continues to spring forth without ceasing even today and is counted as one of Japan's "100 Famous Waters."

While you cannot drink from Isoshimizu, it is used as "temizu" (purification water) for cleansing hands and mouth when visiting the shrine. When I purified my hands at Isoshimizu, I experienced a sensation as if my heart was being cleansed.

This is a recommended spot for those interested in power spots and natural mysteries. When visiting Amanohashidate Shrine, please be sure to stop by.

4:00 PM: Return to the South Side of Amano Hashidate and Explore Must-See Tourist Destinations

After traversing Amano Hashidate, return to the south side and enjoy the must-see tourist spots on the southern side. Japanese-style scenery spreads out with temples with long histories and waterfalls where you can feel the beauty of nature.

Chionji Temple

160620252050_image18.jpg

Chionji Temple is a temple where Buddhist deities governing wisdom are enshrined. As a temple with strong power related to academic success, worshippers gather from all over the country.

Chionji Temple has such a long history that it was depicted in the national treasure painting "Amanohashidate-zu" drawn from the 15th to 16th centuries.

What I recommend seeing within Chionji Temple are the stones divided into three different sizes. Large, medium, and small stones separated by weight are placed in the temple grounds, and there is a legend that touching all the stones will grant you strength and wisdom.

This is recommended for people preparing for some kind of examination or those who want to fulfill wishes related to academic success.

Circle Stone Lantern of Wisdom

160620252050_image1.jpg

The Circle Stone Lantern of Wisdom is a stone lantern located on the north side of Chionji Temple.

In the past, it was used as a navigation light to pray for the safety of ships, but now it is said that "if you pass through this ring three times, you will be granted wonderful wisdom."

To pass through the Circle Stone Lantern of Wisdom, it is said that you need to be creative rather than simply passing your entire body through. However, it's said that if three people gather together, they can find the answer, so why not try challenging it with friends or family? If you want to enjoy a unique experience, please be sure to stop by.

Kanabikino Falls

160620252050_image8.jpg

Kanabikino Falls is the only waterfall in Kyoto selected as one of "Japan's 100 Famous Waterfalls."

The waterfall is approximately 40 meters high and 20 meters wide, and you can see the powerful flow of water cascading down no matter what season you visit. The waterfall that splits and falls to the left and right is called "Otaki" (Male Falls) on the right side and "Metaki" (Female Falls) on the left side.

I love being healed by the negative ions at Kanabikino Falls.
At Kanabikino Falls, you can enjoy a waterfall meditation experience by standing under the falls, limited to October through March. Waterfall meditation is a Japanese training method where you enter the waterfall and pray or chant sutras while being struck by the waterfall.

It is said to dispel distracting thoughts and enhance concentration, so if you want to discipline yourself through this uniquely Japanese method of purification, please give it a try.

6:00 PM: Heal the Day's Fatigue at Chie no Yu Hot Spring

160620252050_image10.png
Source:Amano Hashidate

After fully enjoying Amano Hashidate, let's heal the day's fatigue at Chie no Yu Hot Spring. Chie no Yu is a hot spring facility located next to Amano Hashidate Station, where you can casually enjoy hot springs without staying overnight. In addition to indoor and outdoor baths, there are various types of baths including unique bathtubs that utilize withered pine trees.

Chie no Yu is characterized by its soft water quality and is known as a hot spring for beautiful skin. When I visited, I could feel that my skin became moist and smooth after bathing. Besides beautifying the skin, it is also said to be effective for neuralgia, burns, and chronic skin diseases.

Since you can leisurely rest your body tired from a day of sightseeing, please be sure to stop by before returning to Kyoto Station.

Address: 640-73 Monju, Miyazu City, Kyoto Prefecture
Business Hours: 12:00~21:00
Closed: Wednesdays and Thursdays
Phone Number: 0772-22-1515
Official Homepage: None

Optional Time: Departure Toward Kyoto

After refreshing at the hot spring, finish your Amano Hashidate sightseeing and depart toward Kyoto. Since souvenir shops are scattered around Amano Hashidate Station, those who want to get unique local souvenirs should definitely visit before departing for Kyoto. Whenever I visit Amano Hashidate, I always purchase sweets made with mochi and Amano Hashidate wine.

Since it takes more than 2 hours to return from Amano Hashidate to Kyoto, it would be good to have dinner around Amano Hashidate before returning. Conversely, returning to Kyoto a little early and enjoying food hopping within Kyoto city is also recommended.

In nighttime Kyoto, tours where you can experience food culture are also available, so please make use of them.
