3 Best Shopping Places in Sapporo for Souvenir Hunting

Sapporo is known for having many must-buy souvenirs, including classic sweets like "Shiroi Koibito" and "ROYCE'" chocolates, Rokkatei's butter sandwiches, and fresh seafood.

If you're looking for souvenirs in Sapporo, we recommend visiting spots where local flavors gather.

Historic shopping streets, convenient shopping centers directly connected to stations, and markets lined with fresh ingredients each have their own unique charm.

Tanukikoji Shopping Street

Tanukikoji Shopping Street is one of Hokkaido's oldest shopping streets, established in 1873 with approximately 150 years of history.

Incidentally, the "Tanuki (raccoon dog)" in the shopping street's name is an animal that frequently appears in Japanese folktales and is considered a symbol of prosperous business.

The arcade stretches about 1km from east to west with approximately 200 shops lined up, offering a diverse selection including specialty stores for Hokkaido confections, drugstores, and restaurants.

Every time I visit, I find myself completely absorbed in souvenir shopping.

Thanks to the arcade, you can comfortably shop even on rainy or snowy days, which is a wonderful feature. At night, izakayas come alive, making it popular as a deep gourmet spot frequented by locals.

Sapporo Stellar Place is a large shopping center directly connected to JR Sapporo Station, boasting one of the largest scales in Hokkaido.

Opened in 2003 as part of "JR Tower," it houses approximately 220 shops ranging from fashion, cosmetics, and miscellaneous goods to restaurants and a movie theater.

With many shops found only here in Hokkaido, it's popular with a wide range of visitors from local youth to tourists.

On the 1st floor souvenir area, you can purchase sweets and specialty products representing Hokkaido.

My personal recommendation is a sweet made of freshly baked cookies sandwiched with red bean paste and butter cream.

It's ideal for those who want to efficiently gather souvenirs before their Shinkansen or train departure.

The restaurant floor offers gourmet dishes made with ingredients from various parts of Hokkaido. The observation deck "T38" on the upper floors offers a spectacular view overlooking Sapporo's cityscape, so please visit along with your shopping.

Sapporo Nijo Market

Sapporo Nijo Market

Sapporo Nijo Market is a market with over 125 years of history, beloved by locals as "Sapporo's Kitchen."

Approximately 25 seafood companies and fresh fish shops line up, displaying crabs, scallops, salmon roe, and sea urchin freshly caught that day.

Popular souvenirs include dried fish and processed seafood products, with some available in vacuum packs for convenient transport. There are also many packaged sweets for sale.

Inside the market, there are restaurants serving seafood rice bowls topped with fresh seafood, with some shops opening as early as 7 AM. Seafood bowls generously topped with salmon roe, sea urchin, and crab are a luxurious dish you can only taste in Sapporo.

The charm lies not only in buying souvenirs but also in enjoying a meal.

Sapporo Factory

Sapporo Factory is a large complex commercial facility built on the site of a former Sapporo Beer brewery constructed in 1876.

Holding historical value as Japan's first beer factory, its attractive feature is the unique atmosphere created by the fusion of brick historical buildings and modern structures.

Approximately 150 shops and restaurants are gathered across all 7 buildings, with outdoor and sports brands being particularly well-represented.

The facility's symbol, the massive atrium, is a soaring space approximately 40m high and serves as an indoor garden surrounded by greenery year-round.

It's a popular spot for families with children as you can relax without worrying about the weather.

During winter, a giant Christmas tree approximately 15m tall is installed, and many tourists gather to see the illuminations.

On the premises, there's "Kaitakushi Beer Brewery" where you can enjoy freshly made craft beer. It's recommended for those who want to enjoy Sapporo Shopping 2026 while feeling the history of Sapporo.
