Shibuya Konnou Hachimangu Shrine, located about 6 minutes on foot from JR Shibuya Station, is considered the birthplace of "Shibuya." It was established in 1092 by the Shibuya clan who ruled this land at the time.

The Konnoumaru Festival, commemorating the heroic figure of Konnoumaru Tsunemitsu, the former lord of Shibuya Castle, has become one of the traditional spring events. During this time only, a wooden statue that he allegedly carved of himself and left for his mother is specially displayed.

The Konno Cherry Tree, planted beside the shrine hall, hosts cherry blossom viewing parties. This rare cherry tree, featuring both single and double blossoms, is counted as one of the three famous cherry trees of Edo (Tokyo's former name).

On the day of the festival, kitchen cars offering various types of gourmet food and merchandise booths line the venue, while street performances liven up the atmosphere. There is plenty of dining space available, so you can enjoy the cherry blossoms while savoring dishes purchased from the kitchen cars.

At Konno Hachimangu Shrine in Shibuya, visitors can admire rare cherry blossom varieties. The "Konno-zakura," a natural monument blooming in the shrine grounds, is a precious Choshu-hikura variety and is counted as one of the three famous cherry trees of Edo.

The Konno-zakura uniquely features both single-petal (hitoe-zakura) and double-petal (yae-zakura) blossoms on the same branch.

Its beauty is said to make one forget the sorrows of the floating world (ukiyo), earning it the name "Usa-wasure no Sakura" (Sorrow-Forgetting Cherry Blossom). During this season, the shrine's ema (votive tablets) and omikuji (fortune slips) feature the Konno-zakura motif, creating an all-cherry-blossom world.

At Konno Hachimangu Shrine, during cherry blossom season, the shrine building where the deity is enshrined is illuminated.

This building was constructed in the early 1600s and is designated as a cultural property as the oldest wooden structure in Shibuya Ward.

The sight of traditional Japanese architecture from approximately 400 years ago alongside the Konno Zakura in full bloom is truly beautiful.

As the sun sets, the cherry blossoms and shrine building are lit up, creating a completely different atmosphere from daytime.

The contrast between the pink petals floating in the dark shrine grounds and the warm tones of the wooden architecture makes it a perfect spot for photography.

The detailed schedule for the illumination has not been announced, so if you wish to view the cherry blossoms at night, we recommend contacting the shrine in advance.

Meiji Jingu Gaien

While Meiji Jingu Gaien is famous for its ginkgo tree avenue, it's also a spectacular cherry blossom viewing spot.

Approximately 340 cherry trees line the walkways, including varieties such as Somei Yoshino, Shidarezakura (weeping cherry), Yaezakura (double-flowered cherry), and Yamazakura, all competing in their beautiful displays.

During the blooming season, cherry petals flutter down ethereally, creating a breathtaking carpet of petals on the walkways, presenting a uniquely solemn beauty. Visitors can also enjoy a panoramic view of the cherry blossoms from the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery at the northern entrance of Meiji Jingu Gaien.

Nakameguro Cherry Blossom Festival

Nakameguro Cherry Blossom Festival

The "Nakameguro Cherry Blossom Festival" is a spring festival held along the Meguro River, one of Tokyo's most famous cherry blossom viewing spots.

Approximately 800 cherry trees bloom along a stretch of about 4 kilometers along the Meguro River. Cherry blossom branches from both banks arch over the river, creating a spectacular view as if you were walking through a cherry blossom tunnel.

On the event day, performances include university brass band concerts and traditional Japanese dances such as yosakoi and awa odori, where dancers move to music.

More than 50 food stalls line the riverbanks, offering diverse gourmet options including sparkling wine, yakitori, and pizza.

I visit every year, and I always look forward to the seasonal limited gourmet items sold by restaurants along the river during this season.

At night, pink "bonbori" (Japanese-style lanterns made of Japanese paper) are lit, and the evening cherry blossoms reflected on the water surface create a magical atmosphere.

Date: Information for 2026 has not yet been announced (March 29-30, 2025)
