Kanazawa Events 2026: Discover Festivals, Traditional Event & Cultural Highlights
Kanazawa is one of Japan's premier historic cities, characterized by traditional streetscapes that developed from its castle town origins. The city also features many modern facilities, and as someone who loves contemporary art and architecture, I count Kanazawa among my favorite cities.
However, it's true that Kanazawa's deep history and living traditions can make it challenging for first-time foreign visitors to fully appreciate. In fact, a friend of mine once said, "I could only vaguely sense its elegance and refinement, and I felt frustrated when I returned home."
If you don't want to have similar regrets, I highly recommend joining a tour where locals guide you through Kanazawa's historic spots. By participating in the Kanazawa Half-day Historical Walking Tour, you can explore Kanazawa's must-see locations while listening to explanations from local guides.
Another appealing aspect of Kanazawa is its rich food culture. If you want to enjoy Kanazawa's exquisite seafood and local cuisine, join the Kanazawa Night Foodie Tour and experience restaurants that locals truly love.
Magical Trip, which offers these tours, is a trusted tour company that has won Tripadvisor's Best of the Best award for two consecutive years in 2024 and 2025.

If you want to explore Japan's tourist destinations efficiently and deeply, definitely try Magical Trip's local tours guided by locals!
You can check out Kanazawa's Half-day Historical Walking Tour below. If you're looking to explore the historic city of Kanazawa in depth, be sure to take a look at the tour and consider joining.

New Year and Winter Events in Kanazawa 2026
Winter in Kanazawa in 2026 brings harsh cold and snowy landscapes, with crisp air enveloping the city. It is precisely because of this climate that warm lights and New Year celebrations resonate even more deeply in our hearts.
In the following sections, we will introduce events starting from January in detail. Please check each monthly event article for access and other details.
Notable Kanazawa Events in January 2026
In January 2026, Kanazawa hosts numerous tradition-related events where you can experience Japanese culture, including New Year's rituals and traditional performing arts.
This is a season when even sightseeing feels special. Walking through the city surrounded by the clear winter air, you may encounter enchanting scenery—one of the many charms of visiting during this time.
Beyond traditional events, you can also enjoy winter-exclusive illuminations, so please check out the Kanazawa Event 2026 listings below.
Hatsumode

Hatsumode is a traditional Japanese custom of visiting shrines and temples at the beginning of the new year to pray for safety and happiness throughout the year.
As a culture of calming the mind at the turning of the year and offering gratitude and prayers, this tradition has taken root in people's lives over many years.
The custom of visiting shrines with family and loved ones during the New Year continues to be cherished in modern Japan.
If you want to experience hatsumode in Kanazawa, Oyama Shrine, where history and aesthetic sensibility merge, is highly recommended.
I once did hatsumode at Oyama Shrine myself. Passing through the torii gate, the air felt refreshingly crisp, and the dignified appearance of the Shinmon gate against the winter sky gave me a true sense of Kanazawa's atmosphere.
The harmony of snowy scenery and lights creates a scene befitting the start of a new year.
If you want to experience a traditional Japanese New Year, please go out for hatsumode.

Kanazawa City Fire Department New Year's Parade
Source:Kanazawa City
Kanazawa City Fire Department New Year's Parade (Dezomeshiki) is a traditional event where firefighters gather to pray for regional safety and disaster-free year.
Dezomeshiki began about 400 years ago as an event to boost the morale of those who protected the town from fires.
The highlight is the ladder acrobatics. The spectacular feats performed at the top of ladders supported by strong men are truly impressive.
I felt very nervous watching the performance, as it seemed like people might fall from the ladders. (Rest assured, they have undergone considerable training and will not fall from the ladders.)
This is a recommended event for those who want to experience Japanese culture and community spirit firsthand.

Korinbo Tree Fantasy Illumination is a winter illumination event held in the Korinbo area of Kanazawa.
The bustling district, popular for shopping and dining, is adorned with approximately 110,000 LED lights, making city strolls enjoyable even in the cold season.
I once visited the Korinbo area for shopping myself.
Viewing the illuminations while taking a break at a warm café felt like the entire city was wrapped in a winter story—it was a truly special time.
Since you can enjoy it even just by stopping by while doing everyday shopping, this is a recommended Kanazawa Event 2026 for travelers who want to experience winter in Kanazawa.

Notable Kanazawa Events in February 2026
In February, Kanazawa becomes even more lively despite the harsh winter cold. The Setsubun events for driving away evil spirits and inviting good fortune are particularly a must-see.
You can also enjoy many other events related to tradition and culture, so please check out the Kanazawa Event 2026 listings below.
Setsubun Festival at Utasu Shrine
Source:Kanazawa Tourism Official
Setsubun Festival is a traditional Japanese event held at the change of seasons to ward off evil spirits and invite good fortune.
Setsubun, which marks the arrival of spring on the calendar, holds special significance as a milestone for overcoming the harsh winter and has been cherished in local communities.
At Utasu Shrine's Setsubun Festival, you can see dances by Kanazawa geisha (locally called geigi) and traditional performing arts, as well as mamemaki.
Mamemaki is a ritual of throwing beans to invite good fortune.
Because this is a traditional event that continues as an extension of daily life, you can truly feel Japanese living culture. Please experience this ongoing Japanese tradition.

Source:Kanazawa Tourism Official
Kanazawa Castle & Kenrokuen Garden "Four Seasons Story" – Winter Edition is a limited-time event featuring nighttime illumination of snow-covered Kanazawa Castle Park and Kenrokuen.
The winter garden stands out for its tranquility, making it a season when you can more deeply appreciate the compositional beauty and elegant simplicity of Japanese gardens.
The highlight is how the illumination makes the yukizuri (winter rope supports for the trees) and the snow-white garden paths emerge beautifully.
I visited as well, and the sight of gentle lights reflecting on the snow-covered garden was breathtakingly beautiful.
If you want to capture Kanazawa's winter scenery in photos and memories, please visit Kenrokuen at night.

Ogan Shinji (at Sugouisobe Shrine)
Source:Kaga Onsenkyo
Ogan Shinji is a traditional event that has been held since ancient times to pray for regional safety and health.
On the day, young men in white ritual robes vigorously strike and break approximately 400 green bamboo poles against stone steps and stone pavements.
Finally, a giant rope serpent is dragged out from the worship hall to outside the shrine and thrown into the Daishoji River from a bridge.
I watched this event before, and the sound of breaking bamboo and the moment the giant rope is thrown into the river have an intensity that cannot be conveyed through video.
It is said that taking home the broken green bamboo and making it into chopsticks brings good luck, so please try to get some.
This is a recommended event for those who want to experience traditional Japanese customs firsthand.

"Hito, Noto, Art." Exhibition
"Hito, Noto, Art." exhibition is an exhibition opened with the hope of supporting areas affected by the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake and heavy rain disaster.
Masterpieces including National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties gather at multiple venues in Kanazawa, displayed along with messages of recovery.
Works from Tokyo National Museum, pieces by Hasegawa Tohaku who has connections to Noto, and Japanese ceramics will be on display.
A major highlight is the opportunity to view works that are usually scattered across museums throughout Japan and abroad, all gathered in one city.
I highly recommend this exhibition for art lovers. As someone who visits museums at least once a week, I definitely plan to attend this exhibition myself.

Spring Events in Kanazawa 2026
Spring in Kanazawa is a season when the harsh winter cold subsides and the entire city is enveloped in gentle sunlight and cherry blossom pink.
Cherry blossoms typically begin blooming from late March to April, and you can enjoy spring scenery at Kanazawa Castle Park, Kenrokuen, and along the walking paths by the Asano River.
In May, the fresh greenery deepens, creating a lighter atmosphere that makes it easier to stroll around the city.
During this season, traditional events and festivals are held throughout the area, perfect for enjoying alongside the spring scenery.
Here, we introduce noteworthy events for March, April, and May by month. Please check each month's event article for details such as access information.
Noteworthy Kanazawa Events in March 2026
March in Kanazawa is still a bit early for cherry blossom season, though depending on the weather, full bloom may occur in late March, and the city gradually becomes wrapped in the atmosphere of spring. Also, don't miss the valuable "geisha-related events" that end in March.
You can also enjoy events that let you feel the arrival of spring, so please check below.
Experience the Authentic Art of Kanazawa Geisha 2026
Source:Kanazawa Tourism Official
Experience the Authentic Art of Kanazawa Geisha 2026 is an experiential event that introduces the art of Kanazawa geisha, which can normally only be experienced in limited settings, in a way that is easy for tourists to understand.
Geisha culture is one of Japan's traditional performing arts that has continued to refine its skills and aesthetic sensibilities over many years.
Even for those of us living in Japan, opportunities to experience geisha culture are rare, and this scarcity is part of its appeal. In fact, only a few of my friends have ever experienced geisha culture.
The highlight is that you can feel the refinement unique to Kanazawa in every dance, song, and elegant movement.
By learning the background and meaning, your understanding deepens, making it more than just a viewing experience.
If you want to experience authentic art up close, please consider attending this Kanazawa Event 2026.

40 Years After His Death: Rey Camoy Exhibition – Painting the Invisible
Source:e Plus
Rey Camoy (1928-1985), born in Kanazawa, was a painter who questioned "what is human" through his paintings throughout his life.
He excelled at expressions that revealed human nature, life's sorrows, and loneliness through figures such as drunkards and old women.
I am strongly drawn to the way inexpressible emotions gradually come through from the slight distortions in the expressions and postures of the characters in his works.
This exhibition features first-time public displays of illustration originals, allowing you to experience techniques that express "the invisible" beyond realism.
Even if you don't know Rey Camoy's works, if you are interested in human psychology, emotions, and the depth of life, please visit this Kanazawa Event 2026.

Noteworthy Kanazawa Events in April 2026
In April, cherry blossoms reach full bloom at many spots in Kanazawa, and temperatures rise significantly from March, allowing you to enjoy flower viewing in warm weather. The charm of this season is that the entire city is wrapped in spring's festive atmosphere, making it ideal for strolling.
You can also enjoy food-related events, so please check below.
Cherry Blossom Viewing

Hanami (Cherry Blossom Viewing) is a cherished custom for Japanese people, enjoying the arrival of the season while admiring cherry blossoms.
Family members, friends, and colleagues gather to spend time together under the cherry trees, chatting and eating, savoring the short blooming period itself.
I also look forward to the hanami season every year.
Hanami in Kanazawa is characterized by the ability to enjoy spring not only with the cherry blossoms themselves but also alongside historical landscapes.
Castle ruins, gardens, and riverside townscapes harmonize with cherry blossoms, allowing you to feel the season in a calm atmosphere.
The best time to see cherry blossoms in Kanazawa is typically from early to mid-April.
Please experience this special time for Japanese people along with Kanazawa's distinctive spring scenery.

Kanazawa Castle & Kenrokuen Garden "Four Seasons Story" – Spring Edition
Source:Kanazawa Tourism Official
At Kanazawa Castle & Kenrokuen Garden "Four Seasons Story" – Spring Edition, Kanazawa Castle Park and Kenrokuen with blooming cherry blossoms are illuminated at night.
The highlight is the fantastical scenery created by the overlapping of historical castle and garden landscapes, cherry blossoms, and light.
The combination of castle and cherry blossoms, symbolizing Japanese aesthetics, spreads across the entire view, giving you a strong sense of "being in Japan."
The illuminated night garden with cherry blossoms floating in quiet light was so impressive that I lost track of time watching it.

Uchikawa Bamboo Shoot Festival
Source:Kanazawa Tourism Official
The Uchikawa Bamboo Shoot Festival is a local event that locals look forward to every year, where you can enjoy bamboo shoots and mountain vegetables, the flavors of spring.
At the venue, in addition to direct sales of bamboo shoots and mountain vegetables, bamboo shoot rice, tempura, simmered dishes, and even free miso soup with bamboo shoots and mountain vegetables are provided.
What's particularly unique is the bamboo shoot digging experience, where you can actually dig up bamboo shoots yourself.
I also tried it, and it was much harder than I imagined to dig up a single bamboo shoot—I was surprised by the weight of the soil and the strength of the roots.
This is a recommended event for those who want to feel "rural mountain life" and seasonal blessings firsthand.

Summer Events in Kanazawa 2026
Kanazawa's summer has high average temperatures of about 27°C, so wearing short sleeves is common. While the temperature itself is almost the same as Tokyo, it feels more humid and oppressive due to high humidity. Since there are many days when the maximum temperature exceeds 30°C, heat stroke prevention measures such as sunscreen and hydration are essential.
From here, we introduce various events that tourists can enjoy in summer Kanazawa, including traditional festivals held in the city, events at popular tourist destinations, and summer seasonal traditions. Please check the detailed event articles for each month for access and other details.

Notable Kanazawa Event 2026 in June
In June, Kanazawa hosts numerous events that enliven the region, centered around traditional events. The "Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival" in particular is a major event representing Kanazawa that attracts many tourists.
Kanazawa's summer nights are relatively comfortable in temperature, with many events to enjoy from evening onwards, such as night illuminations and festivals.
Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival
The Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival is Kanazawa's largest festival, held annually in June to commemorate Maeda Toshiie, the leader of the group that once ruled the Kanazawa area, entering Kanazawa Castle.
The highlight of the Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival is the large-scale parade called "Hyakumangoku Procession." Led by a famous actor dressed as Lord Maeda Toshiie, various processions including people in gorgeous traditional costumes and traditional performing arts performers walk from Kanazawa Station to Kanazawa Castle. When I visited, I experienced the mysterious sensation of traveling back in time to ancient Japan.
This Kanazawa Event 2026 is recommended for those interested in Japanese history and traditional culture, or those who want to experience Japanese traditional culture up close.

Eve Festival: Kaga Yuzen Toro Nagashi
Kaga Yuzen Toro Nagashi is an event where lanterns are floated down the Asanogawa River on the night before the Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival. About 1,200 lanterns decorated with Kanazawa's traditional craft "Kaga Yuzen" are released into the Asanogawa River. The sight of lanterns gently floating down the river at night is fantastical.
Kaga Yuzen Toro Nagashi began in 1975 to express gratitude for the connection between Kaga Yuzen and the river, showing respect for Kaga Yuzen predecessors and wishing for the future prosperity of traditional crafts. Since it's held very close to Kanazawa's popular tourist area "Higashi Chaya District," it's easily accessible.
This Kanazawa Event 2026 is perfect for those who want a quiet, heart-calming experience or those who want to attend photogenic events that allow them to feel Japanese culture.

Kenroku-en Garden Kanazawa Castle Shiki Monogatari~Shoka no Dan~ is a limited-time Kanazawa Event 2026 where the representative tourist destinations Kenroku-en Garden and Kanazawa Castle are specially illuminated at night. At Kanazawa Castle, several gates and turrets and other historical structures are illuminated, creating a mystical atmosphere. Please take your time walking around and experience the Japanese atmosphere.
At Kenroku-en Garden, traditional Japanese boats float on the pond, and flutes are played on the boats. The quietly standing trees and the sound of the flute that soothes the heart are my favorite points.

KANAZAWA KOGEI FESTA 2026

Kanazawa is a city where many traditional cultures still thrive today. Numerous craft shops, workshops, and galleries are concentrated here. KOGEI FESTA 2026 is an event to enjoy Kanazawa as a city of crafts.

A diverse array of activities are available, including making Kanazawa Kutani pottery on a potter's wheel, making paulownia wood spinning tops, creating gold leaf small plates, and making tote bags using Kaga Yuzen stencil dyeing. What caught my interest was the metalworking casting experience. You'll create animal-shaped dessert spoons while learning from craftspeople. It takes only about 40 minutes, so you can try it casually.
The experience corners require advance registration, but if spaces are available, you can also sign up on-site. It's a precious opportunity, so if time permits, please give it a try.

My favorite highlight is being able to eat the hot crab soup made in large pots and "Kani-men" (crab face), a Kanazawa local dish where Female Snow Crab meat is arranged in the shell. It warms your stomach enough to blow away the winter cold.
This event is recommended for those who want to enjoy fresh seafood or experience Kanazawa's food culture.

Autumn Foliage at Gyokusen-en Garden

Gyokusen-en is located near Kenrokuen Garden. It's a garden that took the Wakita family, upper-ranking retainers of the Kaga Domain, about 100 years to create. While designed primarily for viewing from the sitting room, walking around the pond reveals different beauties such as moss-covered stones and ancient giant trees.
The charm of Gyokusen-en's autumn foliage lies in the variety of trees that change color. Burning bush offers not only vivid autumn leaves but also red and orange ripening berries to enjoy. Enkianthus transforms into a blazing red, and Japanese maples also color the garden.
Precisely because the garden is not vast, the beauty of the autumn foliage is concentrated and becomes more impressive. Furthermore, the garden includes slopes, and the ability to view the autumn foliage three-dimensionally is another highlight.
Along with the autumn leaves, the fragrance of fragrant olive drifts through the air, and you can also enjoy the delicate berries of Japanese white oak, Japanese yew, Japanese Ardisia, and more. While strolling, why not savor the expressions of the trees from the ground to the branch tips?
Within the garden is Saisetsutei Roji (the tea garden path leading to Saisetsutei), said to be Kanazawa's oldest tea house, where enjoying matcha and seasonal sweets while viewing the autumn leaves is an exceptional experience.
You can feel as if you've traveled back in time to experience the atmosphere of Kanazawa from about 400 years ago. Please fully enjoy the deeply elegant autumn foliage at Gyokusen-en, which offers a different flavor from Kenrokuen.

Kenroku-en Garden Snow Hanging Work
Source:Kanazawa Tourism Official
The Kenroku-en Garden snow hanging work is a traditional operation performed at Kenroku-en Garden, a famous attraction in Kanazawa, to protect trees from heavy snow that falls during winter. Snow hanging (yukitsuri) is beloved as a winter tradition in Kanazawa, with approximately 800 locations throughout the garden receiving snow hanging installations using ropes and poles.
The snow hanging work is carried out annually from November 1st through mid-December, so visitors during this period can observe the work up close. The skilled craftsmanship of artisans setting up central poles and radiating ropes to branches, along with the garden's transformation as work progresses, are highlights worth watching.
The completed snow hanging installations can be viewed until mid-March. This is a recommended event for those interested in traditional Japanese techniques or wanting to see sights unique to Kanazawa.

Kaga-shishi Joint Performance
Source:Kanazawa Tourism Official
The Kaga-shishi joint performance is a unique event where groups performing various schools of Shishimai (traditional performing art involving dancing while wearing lion masks) from throughout the prefecture collaborate with "Kaga-shishi," which is treasured in Kanazawa as historically valuable.
My recommended highlight is being able to watch powerful dances up close. The Kaga-shishi joint performance incorporates martial arts techniques using weapons such as wooden staffs, swords, spears, sickles, and chains, characterized by magnificent and dynamic movements. Additionally, since movements and techniques vary greatly between different schools, you can enjoy comparing the differences.
This is perfect for those interested in traditional Japanese performing arts that can be viewed up close or those looking for easily accessible events.

Kanazawa Christmas Market
Source:Kanazawa Tourism Official
The Kanazawa Christmas Market is the largest Christmas market in the Hokuriku region, held underground at Kanazawa Station. About 100 booths featuring gourmet food, miscellaneous goods, and workshops gather for two days, making it a popular event bustling with locals and tourists alike. When I visited, I was able to spend a peaceful time drinking warm mulled wine.
In addition to shops and gourmet food, stage events and games are also planned, offering various ways to enjoy yourself. At the Santa booth, you can even have the experience of meeting Santa.
The Kanazawa Christmas Market is held near Tsuzumi-mon Gate, a symbol of Kanazawa Station, making it an attractive point that it's easy to visit casually in combination with sightseeing. If you want to experience the Christmas spirit, please definitely visit.

New Year's Eve and Hatsumode at Shrines

If you visit Kanazawa during the year-end and New Year period, New Year's Eve and Hatsumode at shrines are recommended. Hatsumode is an event where people visit shrines in the New Year to celebrate the safety of the past year.
If you're welcoming the New Year in Kanazawa, it's recommended to visit Oyama-jinja, Kanazawa Shrine, Ishiura Shrine, Ozaki Shrine, and others around Kenroku-en Garden and Kanazawa Castle. Many locals also visit, so you can experience Japanese New Year culture together with them.
Also, if you go to Utasu Shrine in Higashi Chaya District, you can enjoy strolling through the tea house district after Hatsumode. Please try choosing a shrine for Hatsumode according to your sightseeing route.
If you want to experience traditional Japanese culture or welcome the New Year in a special way, please definitely visit a shrine.

Free Admission to Kenroku-en Garden During New Year Period
Source:Kanazawa Tourism Official
If you're spending the year-end and New Year in Kanazawa, visiting Kenroku-en Garden is also recommended.
Kenroku-en Garden, which is usually paid admission, is opened free of charge only during the period from December 31st to January 3rd, where you can enjoy winter-specific scenery such as snow landscapes, yukitsuri (snow protection for trees), and nighttime illumination. The contrast between the snow landscape and yukitsuri is so beautiful it can be called a symbol of winter Kenroku-en Garden, and the nighttime illumination offers a mystical atmosphere different from daytime.
Also, since the garden is open during the night from December 31st to January 1st, it's possible to welcome the New Year moment at Kenroku-en Garden. This is a recommended event for those who want to fully enjoy the beautiful snow scenery unique to Kanazawa or experience a special New Year.
