Kanazawa September 2026: Ultimate Guide to Geisha Shows, Owara Dance Festival & Local Events

Kanazawa Event 2026 Published: Apr 3, 2026

Kanazawa is one of Japan's premier historic cities, characterized by traditional streetscapes that developed from its castle town origins. The city also features many modern facilities, and as someone who loves contemporary art and architecture, I count Kanazawa among my favorite cities.

However, it's true that Kanazawa's deep history and living traditions can make it challenging for first-time foreign visitors to fully appreciate. In fact, a friend of mine once said, "I could only vaguely sense its elegance and refinement, and I felt frustrated when I returned home."

If you don't want to have similar regrets, I highly recommend joining a tour where locals guide you through Kanazawa's historic spots. By participating in the Kanazawa Half-day Historical Walking Tour, you can explore Kanazawa's must-see locations while listening to explanations from local guides.

Another appealing aspect of Kanazawa is its rich food culture. If you want to enjoy Kanazawa's exquisite seafood and local cuisine, join the Kanazawa Night Foodie Tour and experience restaurants that locals truly love.

Magical Trip, which offers these tours, is a trusted tour company that has won Tripadvisor's Best of the Best award for two consecutive years in 2024 and 2025.

If you want to explore Japan's tourist destinations efficiently and deeply, definitely try Magical Trip's local tours guided by locals!

Introduction

Kanazawa, which flourished as a castle town about 400 years ago, is a popular tourist destination with many distinctly Japanese tourist attractions featuring traditional streetscapes and historic buildings that remain to this day.

September in Kanazawa is a comfortable season when the heat subsides from summer to autumn, making it perfect for sightseeing tours. During this Kanazawa Event September 2026 season, traditional performing arts inherited in Kanazawa's historic tea districts and cultural events unique to Kanazawa—the city of art where traditional crafts and contemporary art merge—are held.

This time, in addition to special events that can only be enjoyed during the Kanazawa Event September 2026 period, we will introduce representative popular spots in Kanazawa that you'll want to visit together and spots where you can enjoy nature unique to this time of year.

For Those Interested in Tradition: The Author's Favorite "Kanazawa Odori" is Recommended

For those who want to experience prestigious traditional culture during the Kanazawa Event September 2026, Kanazawa Odori is highly recommended.

Kanazawa Odori is a traditional stage where Geigi from Kanazawa's three tea districts (Higashi Chaya District, Nishi Chaya District, and Kazuemachi Chaya District) gather together. During this event, you can appreciate traditional musical instrument performances and dances such as Kanazawa Subayashi and Kanazawa Fuga by the Geigi.

Among these, my personal favorite is the finale of Kanazawa Odori—Kanazawa Fuga. The sight of many Geigi in kimono dancing in unison is graceful and beautiful, allowing you to experience Japanese traditional culture up close.

Kanazawa's Geigi are women who inherit the arts and spirit of hospitality that have been practiced in the tea districts for over 200 years. Geigi have a traditional rule called "ichi-gen-san okotowari" (no first-time customers), and normally you cannot meet them without an introduction from a regular customer.

Why not participate in Kanazawa Odori to appreciate traditional performing arts by Geigi that are usually difficult to see, and experience authentic Japanese traditional culture?

The Kanazawa Half-day Historical Walking Tour is a guided tour where you can fully experience Kanazawa's history and culture. This tour takes you around popular tourist spots where you can experience Kanazawa's history, including Kanazawa Castle, Kenroku-en, and Higashi Chaya District.

Kanazawa was a castle town ruled by the Kaga Domain, one of Japan's largest domains, about 400 years ago during the Edo period. Kanazawa at that time was also famous as one of Japan's leading cultural cities, and even now there are abundant spots where you can enjoy historic tea districts and traditional crafts.

Kanazawa Events in September 2026: Uniquely Enjoyable Ways to Experience Japanese Tradition

Kanazawa, which flourished as a castle town, has long been home to deeply rooted traditional culture. Traditional crafts that developed during the samurai era for industry and cultural refinement span a wide range, including gold leaf, dyeing, ceramics, and lacquerware, and in recent years their popularity as art has been growing.

In the teahouse districts, a vibrant performing arts culture centered around geisha also thrived. The dances performed at celebratory gatherings and the Bon Odori danced during festivals continue to be passed down to this day.

Here, we introduce two events where you can experience the traditional culture that Kanazawa has to offer.

Oterart Kanazawa

Source: Official website

"Oterart" is a unique art exhibition held at temples throughout Kanazawa. Works spanning multiple genres are displayed by artists active both domestically and internationally, as well as students aspiring to become artists. The event name "Oterart" is a portmanteau of "Otera" (meaning "temple" in Japanese) and "Art."

Examples of exhibited work genres:

  • Painting
  • Sculpture
  • Ceramics
  • Calligraphy
  • Video
  • Contemporary Art

One of the most appealing aspects is that each temple offers a different way to enjoy the exhibition, from carefully arranged displays to hands-on experience booths. Last year, I personally participated in a paid hands-on workshop where you could make your own folding fan or bracelet. Art pieces are also available for purchase, making them great as souvenirs.

If you want to tour temples while enjoying art, this is definitely worth a visit!

  • Dates: Late September 2026
  • Venue: Temples throughout Kanazawa City
  • Access: Please check the website for each individual temple
  • Admission: Free (some workshops and activities are paid)

Ishibiki Geba-Geba Bon Odori

Source: Facebook

About a 15-minute drive from Kanazawa Station, the Ishibiki Shopping Street hosts a one-of-a-kind Bon Odori festival. Bon Odori is a traditional dance performed during summer to send off the spirits of ancestors who have returned to the living world.

At the festival, everyone dances together to the original song "Ishibiki Geba-geba Ondo."

What I personally love about this event is the music festival-like atmosphere, with DJ live performances adding a modern twist. You can also enjoy classic Japanese festival fare like candy apples and Ramune (bottled soda), alongside specialty foods from the shopping street's local vendors.

This is the perfect event for anyone who wants to have a great time alongside locals and soak up an authentic, neighborhood atmosphere.

Other Must-See Kanazawa Events in September 2026

Kanazawa Oktoberfest

Kanazawa Oktoberfest is an event where you can enjoy the atmosphere and German beer of Munich, Germany's "Oktoberfest." "Oktoberfest" is the world's largest beer festival that has been held in Munich, Germany since 1810.

At Kanazawa Oktoberfest, you can savor German beers from various regions in a venue that recreates the authentic atmosphere. You can fully enjoy authentic German beers, including "Weihenstephan," the world's oldest brewery, and "BRLO," popular for its fruity craft beers.

Also, what I particularly like about this event is that you can also savor authentic German cuisine such as sausages and mashed potatoes.

Why not enjoy a special experience unique to this location—tasting authentic German beer and cuisine while listening to German folk music performances alongside Kanazawa's traditional architecture?

Kanazawa JAZZ STREET

Source: Kanazawa Tourism Official

One of the Kanazawa events in September 2026 that I personally look forward to most is "Kanazawa JAZZ STREET." It is the largest jazz event in the Hokuriku region and takes place throughout the central streets of Kanazawa City, turning the whole area into a live music venue.

One of its most compelling features is the gathering of jazz musicians from Japan and abroad, both professional and amateur. There are even performances by junior jazz bands made up of elementary, middle, and high school students.

At the opening ceremony, anyone who brings an instrument can join in and participate. If that sounds interesting to you, head over a little early and check the sheet music handed out at the venue.

Parks and plazas are lined with stalls offering street food and Kanazawa specialty products.

Come and feel the mellow atmosphere of Kanazawa's charming streets wrapped in the sounds of jazz.

5 Must-Visit Tourist Destinations to Enjoy Alongside Kanazawa's September Events

Kanazawa has many historical landmarks where traditions from about 400 years ago remain deeply rooted. September, as the season transitions from summer to autumn, is also an attractive time to enjoy the beautiful nature unique to this period.

Here are 5 popular Kanazawa tourist spots we recommend visiting alongside enjoying events during your Kanazawa Event September 2026, so please check them out.

Kenroku-en

130720251117_image6.jpg

Kenroku-en Garden is Kanazawa's representative popular tourist destination and is counted as one of Japan's three most famous gardens, designed as a circular walking garden. Kenroku-en Garden was created about 400 years ago during the Edo period, where you can enjoy the fusion of Kanazawa's traditions with nature's seasonal beauty.

September at Kenroku-en Garden is a beautiful season when leaves begin to change color from summer's deep green to autumn's red foliage. While Kenroku-en Garden's peak autumn foliage season is in November, September offers colorful gradations that can only be seen during this time, which is an attractive feature.

In September, when the summer heat subsides and Kanazawa begins to cool down, my favorite way to spend time is relaxing on the terrace seats of the tea houses within the garden, savoring matcha and traditional sweets. Please enjoy Kanazawa's history and the beautiful natural scenery unique to this season.

Kanazawa Castle

130720251117_image9.png

Kanazawa Castle was the residence of the Maeda Family, who ruled the Kaga Domain, which was one of the largest domains in Japan during the Edo period. Today, it is one of Kanazawa's popular tourist spots where visitors can admire precious structures that remain from that era and beautifully restored castle architecture.

At Kanazawa Castle, you can mainly enjoy the following highlights:

Ishikawa-mon gate: This is the representative gate of Kanazawa Castle, and the current gate was rebuilt in 1788 after the original gate was destroyed by fire.

Hashizume-mon gate: This is considered the most prestigious gate in Kanazawa Castle, restored in 2001 and 2015.

Stone walls: Kanazawa Castle is also called a "stone wall museum" because visitors can observe different stacking methods depending on the era and location where they were built.

Kanazawa Castle is about a 5-minute walk from Kenroku-en Garden. Please be sure to visit both of these two major tourist destinations that represent Kanazawa, especially if you're planning to attend the Kanazawa Event September 2026.

Chirihama Beach

130720251117_image7.jpg

Chirihama Beach is a spectacular spot that attracts tourists from both Japan and abroad as the only beach in Japan where you can drive on the sand.

The secret behind Chirihama Beach's drivable surface lies in its fine sand grains, each about 0.2mm in diameter. The fine sand hardens when it absorbs seawater, allowing cars, buses, motorcycles, and other vehicles' tires to drive safely without getting stuck. You can enjoy an exhilarating 8-kilometer drive while feeling the sea breeze at the water's edge.

Having visited Chirihama Beach several times, what left the deepest impression on me was the evening scenery when the sun sets over the Sea of Japan. You can witness beautiful scenes like something from a TV commercial, with cars driving through the sunset.

Chirihama Beach is about 45 minutes by car from central Kanazawa. After visiting Kanazawa's historical landmarks, please enjoy the beautiful seascape unique to the Sea of Japan side.

Utatsuyama Park Hanashoubuen is a beautiful garden located on the middle slope of Utatsuyama (Utatsu Mountain), offering panoramic views of Kanazawa city. This garden is famous for allowing visitors to admire approximately 20,000 iris plants and about 2,900 hydrangea plants from June to July.

At Utatsuyama Park, you can enjoy beautiful nature throughout the seasons, including cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring, and autumn foliage in fall. In September, you can spend pleasant moments strolling surrounded by lush green vegetation - perfect timing for visitors attending the Kanazawa Event September 2026.

From the observation deck at Utatsuyama Park, you can see not only Kanazawa city but also the Sea of Japan on clear days. You can experience breathtaking views unique to Kanazawa, where rich nature harmonizes with modern cityscapes.

Utatsuyama Park Hanashoubuen is located about a 10-minute walk from Kanazawa's popular tourist destination, Higashi Chaya District. After experiencing Kanazawa's traditions, please be sure to find healing in the beautiful nature as well.

Kinjo Reitaku Sacred Well

130720251117_image1.png
Source: Wikipedia

Kinjo Reitaku Sacred Well is a sacred well located within the grounds of Kanazawa Shrine and is the legendary spot that gave rise to the place name "Kanazawa."

Legend has it that when a farmer washed sweet potatoes he had dug in the mountains with this spring water, much gold dust appeared. The place name "Kanazawa" is said to have been created by combining "sand gold" (which means "kana" in Kanazawa in Japanese) with "sawa" (a place where water accumulates and grass grows).

Due to its origins, Kinjo Reitaku Sacred Well is popular as one of Kanazawa's premier power spots for financial fortune. The solemn atmosphere surrounded by crystal-clear spring water and trees provides a cooling sensation in September when heat still remains - making it an ideal spiritual stop for those visiting during the Kanazawa Event September 2026.

Since Kinjo Reitaku Sacred Well is located next to Kenroku-en Garden, why not explore them together?

In September Kanazawa, You Can Enjoy the "Ecchuyatsuo Owarakaze-no-Bon," One of Japan's Most Celebrated Traditional Festivals

Source: Ecchu Yatsuo Sightseeing Association

Every year from September 1 to 3, the mountain town of Yatsuo in southern Toyama City transforms into one of Japan's most enchanting festival destinations.

Dancers in matching yukata and deep-brimmed straw hats glide silently through lantern-lit streets to the haunting sound of the shamisen and kokyu — a scene that feels less like a performance and more like stepping into another era entirely.

History of Ecchu Yatsuo Owarakaze-no-Bon

Source: Ecchu Yatsuo Sightseeing Association

The festival is believed to have originated in 1702, when the founder of Yatsuo recovered a crucial permit for the town and the entire community celebrated by parading for three days and three nights.

Over time, it took on new spiritual meaning. September 1 falls on the 210th day after the first day of spring — a period historically associated with typhoons — and locals began praying to appease the wind god and protect their rice crops before harvest. This is how the festival earned its name: "Kaze-no-Bon," meaning "Wind Festival."

Central to the event is the jikata, the ensemble of musicians who provide its musical backbone. The shamisen sets the melody, the kokyu (a bowed string instrument with a distinctively mournful tone) adds a layer of melancholy, and taiko drums keep a steady rhythm beneath it all.

Highlights of Ecchu Yatsuo Owarakaze-no-Bon

Source: Ecchu Yatsuo Sightseeing Association

Unlike Japan's other major summer festivals, there are no fireworks or amplified music here. The festival unfolds quietly across 11 historic districts, each with its own subtle variations in dance and song passed down through generations.

The men's dance is dynamic and grounded, while the women's dance is refined and fluid. Both styles are performed with faces partially hidden beneath wide-brimmed woven hats, lending the procession a mysterious, almost ghostly quality.

As thousands of paper lanterns are lit along rows of traditional wooden townhouses, the atmosphere becomes genuinely magical. The highlight for many visitors is the late-night street procession known as "Nagashi," where dancers flow through the town accompanied by live musicians, drawing spectators into step behind them.

For the most photogenic views, head to Suwa Town Main Street — a cobblestone hillside lane lined with stone walls and whitewashed buildings. Two local sake breweries, Fukutsuru (founded 1848) and Tama Asahi (founded 1808), both produce labels named after the festival and are well worth a visit.
