Tokyo Events & Festivals October 2026: Fireworks, Food Fairs, Halloween & Local Matsuri
Tokyo is home to countless spots, from bustling entertainment districts like Shibuya and Harajuku, to neighborhoods that come alive at night like Shinjuku and Roppongi, to areas that preserve traditional old-town charm like Asakusa and Kanda.
While Tokyo is a city packed with appeal, it's also true that increasing tourism development has made it harder for visitors to experience the "real Tokyo." In other words, instead of enjoying Tokyo like a local, tourists are often limited to experiencing only the touristy side of the city.
That's exactly why I want you to explore the city with locals who know the real Tokyo. With tours from Magical Trip—winner of Tripadvisor's The Best of The Best in both 2024 and 2025—you can make that happen.

The Tokyo Bar Hopping Night Tour in Shinjuku, a back-to-back winner of The Best of The Best for two consecutive years, lets you safely enjoy spots beloved by locals in famous Shinjuku areas like Kabukicho and Omoide Yokocho.
If you're interested in Japanese culture, I recommend the Tokyo Sumo Morning Practice Tour in Ryogoku, where you can visit a sumo stable—something even most Japanese people have never experienced—or the Asakusa Cultural Walk & Matcha Making Tour, where you can stroll through Asakusa while learning about Japanese culture from your guide.
If you want to create your own itinerary and explore Tokyo deeply and efficiently, choose Customized Private Tours of Japan with MagicalTrip's Top Guides, where you can craft a special itinerary tailored just for you with a local guide.

Tokyo Fireworks Festival Events in October 2026
Tamagawa Fireworks Festival

The Tamagawa River Fireworks Festival is a theatrical fireworks event composed around a new theme each year. Approximately 6,000 fireworks are launched into the night sky one after another.
The 2025 theme was "Aya~The colorful fireworks shining on the Tama River~." True to its name, the overlapping layers of light that seemed to color not just the night sky but even the surface of the river were truly breathtaking.
What I cannot forget is the moment the finale starmine rose into the sky and cheers and applause erupted from the crowd around me. As the fireworks burst open all at once in time with the music, filling my entire field of vision with dazzling light, I found myself holding my breath at the sheer beauty of it all.
If you are a Tokyo event tourist in October 2026 looking to savor Japanese fireworks culture in the clear autumn air, this is a night you absolutely must experience.

This event, which promotes the attractions of Shinagawa, features participation from about 50 local shopping district stores and companies. There are plenty of activities to enjoy from daytime, including music live performances on stage and food booths.
The fireworks display starting at 7 PM will color the autumn night sky with approximately 8,000 fireworks. The "Kawasaki Shisei Kinen Tamagawa Fireworks Festival (Kawasaki City Founding Anniversary Tamagawa Fireworks Festival)," which has continued since 1929, is a traditional fireworks festival where the fusion of fireworks and music is the highlight - an unmissable Tokyo event October 2026.
This river spanning two prefectures, Tokyo and Kanagawa, hosts a joint fireworks festival with the "Tamagawa Fireworks Festival" on the opposite bank. You can enjoy two fireworks displays alternately launched from both banks, giving you great value for your experience.
The wide variety of food stalls lined up in a row is also one of my favorite points. Please enjoy the dynamic fireworks in the autumn night sky!

Tokyo Yosakoi

When it comes to the dance festival that energizes Tokyo in October, it's "Tokyo Yosakoi." This event is held as the finale that concludes Ikebukuro's big autumn event, "Fukuro Matsuri."
"Tokyo Yosakoi" is based on the traditional dance event "Yosakoi Matsuri" that originated in Kochi Prefecture, with Tokyo's unique arrangements added to it. It's held in a contest format where teams participate, competing by showcasing their individual characteristics in costumes, music, and choreography.
I absolutely love the atmosphere of "Tokyo Yosakoi" where the entire venue comes together in excitement. Please experience the passionate atmosphere of the venue!

Kiku Kuyo-e (Chrysanthemum Memorial Service) & Kinryu-no-Mai (Golden Dragon Dance)

The "Kiku Kuyo-e" held at Sensoji Temple on October 18th is a traditional ceremony for praying to ward off disasters and for longevity. Visitors bring chrysanthemum flowers to offer at the main hall and exchange them for flowers already offered there to take home. It's said that if you put the chrysanthemums you take home inside your pillow, they become a protective charm against disasters.
During Kiku Kuyo-e, the "Kinryu-no-Mai" is dedicated, featuring a golden dragon weighing 88kg and measuring 18m in length. Eight people manipulate the dragon, parading from Sensoji Temple's grounds through Nakamise Shopping Street. The dynamic movement of this gorgeous dragon is absolutely spectacular!

Shinjuku Gyoen Mori no Takiginoh (Shinjuku Gyoen Firelight Noh Performance)

The Shinjuku Gyoen Takiginoh (Firelight Noh Performance) is a special evening of traditional performing arts held in a garden spreading through the heart of the city, where Noh and Kyogen are performed by the light of torches.
Noh is a classical form of Japanese performing art dating back to the 14th century, in which stories are expressed through song and dance. Kyogen, on the other hand, is a more approachable form of performance characterized by comical gestures and movements.
Noh and Kyogen each have their own distinct appeal, but it is the Noh stage that draws me in. The actors wear Noh masks and their expressions remain fixed, yet when watched in the flickering light of the torches, feelings of joy and sorrow seem to mysteriously rise to the surface.
Why not treat yourself to this luxurious experience that can only be fully appreciated during this season, when the day fades, the heat eases, and the night breeze becomes pleasantly cool?

Must-See Market Events to Shop for Authentic Japanese Souvenirs
Bettara Ichi (Bettara Market)

"Bettara Ichi" is a festival held in conjunction with the annual festival of Takarada Ebisu Shrine. Long ago, when food was sold during the eve festival, "Bettara-zuke (radish pickled with sugar and rice koji)" sold very well, which is how the festival got its name.
On the day of the event, about 20 Bettara-zuke shops set up stalls, along with approximately 500 street vendors selling items like shichimi togarashi (seven-spice chili pepper) and candy crafts.
My favorite feature is the approximately 1,500 lanterns that illuminate the festival. The softly glowing lanterns create a wonderful mood.
Please visit this popular festival that represents autumn in Nihonbashi!
Information:
- Date: Early October 2026 (October 19-20, 2025)
- Access: Get off at Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line "Kodemmacho Station (Exit 3)" (about 1-minute walk)

Kappabashi Dougu Matsuri (Kappabashi Tool Festival)

Kappabashi is a shopping street located between Asakusa and Ueno. This street, lined with over 170 shops, features specialized stores related to cooking, including tableware, cooking utensils, and food samples. While it's a wholesale district for professionals working in restaurants, it has recently become popular as a tourist destination.
Once a year, each store holds the "Dougu Matsuri" with special sales. Japanese-style tableware is especially recommended for foreign visitors.
I often go there to buy seasonal paper napkins and paper plates for Halloween, New Year's, and other occasions. They're lightweight and don't take up much space, making them perfect souvenirs!
Just browsing around Kappabashi is enjoyable, so please visit!
Information:
- Date: October 7-13, 2026

Kanda Furuhon Matsuri (Kanda Second Hand Books Fair)

Kanda・Jimbocho is home to what's said to be the world's largest used bookstore district. The "Kanda Furuhon Matsuri (Kanda Second Hand Books Fair)" held in this used bookstore district has become an autumn tradition of Jimbocho.
As a book lover, I look forward to this event every year, where you can unexpectedly encounter nostalgic books or unfamiliar foreign books. Foreign visitors can definitely enjoy finding old books from their own countries.
Jimbocho is also known as a fierce battleground for curry and ramen. Please enjoy Jimbocho gourmet food along with the books!
Information:

October Events Featuring Thrilling Parades and Mikoshi Processions
Nihonbashi Kyobashi Matsuri

The "Nihonbashi Kyobashi Matsuri" is a Tokyo event where approximately 2,000 people parade along Nihonbashi's main street. This event, which began in 1972 to commemorate the completion of a national highway, opens with a spectacular opening ceremony featuring ribbon-cutting by ward mayors, neighborhood association leaders, and government office representatives.
In addition to parades by local participants including police officers, firefighters, and middle school brass bands from around Nihonbashi, the attractive highlight is the gathering of traditional festivals and dances from all across Japan.
Please enjoy this vibrant festival where you can truly feel the essence of Tokyo!

Oedo Mikoshi Matsuri

As a festival enthusiast, my recommended autumn Tokyo event for October 2026 is the "Oedo Mikoshi Matsuri."
"Mikoshi" are portable shrines that carry deities and are carried energetically through the streets, sometimes referred to as "Portable Shrines" in English. Most cities and neighborhood associations across Japan have their own mikoshi, making them indispensable elements of Japanese festivals.
This event, hosted by the Japan Mikoshi Association, brings together mikoshi from around Tokyo. The highlights include contests showcasing different mikoshi decorations and the carrying techniques of the bearers.
Experience the powerful movements of the mikoshi and their dynamic chants up close!

AUTUMN GINZA

AUTUMN GINZA is an autumn tradition where visitors can enjoy a stroll through the streets while experiencing Ginza's culture and heritage.
Highlights include the "Ginchakai," a tea ceremony experience held on Ginza Street, and the Golden Parade for Traffic Safety, an event with nearly 60 years of history that adds a vibrant flair to the neighborhood.
Among all the events, the one I particularly recommend is the "Ginza Hacho Jinja Shrine Pilgrimage."
This pilgrimage takes you to 13 small shrines scattered throughout Ginza's modern cityscape. As you make your way from shrine to shrine, you become aware of these quietly sacred spaces — places that have long received the prayers of people — still carefully preserved to this day.
Visiting all the shrines during AUTUMN GINZA also comes with a fun bonus: a commemorative gift awaits you at each one.
It is the perfect experience for anyone who wants to discover an unexpected side of Ginza while walking through its streets.
- Date: Mid-October 2026 (exact date TBD)
- Venue: Ginza area
- Access: Directly accessible from Ginza Station, Ginza-itchome Station, and Higashi-Ginza Station (Tokyo Metro) / Directly accessible from Yurakucho Station (JR)

Local Tokyo Festivals in October Where You Can Savor Japanese Festival Culture
Meguro Citizens Festival

The "Meguro Citizens Festival" is a beloved local autumn festival and a wonderful Tokyo event for October 2026.
The festival consists of four main areas:
- Festival Square
- Children's Square
- Local Products Exhibition
- Saury Festival
In the "Festival Square," you can enjoy stage events featuring traditional Japanese performing arts and dance, as well as food stalls. My personal favorite is the "Local Products Exhibition," where you can find local specialties and delicious items from all over Japan. For children, I recommend the giant cardboard maze in the "Children's Square."
At the "Saury Festival," only Meguro residents who won in advance can taste the fish, but please enjoy the autumn atmosphere through the aromatic fragrance!
This is a recommended event for those who want to experience a local atmosphere.
Information:
- Date: Mid-October 2026 (October 12, 2025)
- Access: JR Yamanote Line, Tokyu Meguro Line, Toei Mita Line "Meguro Station" (approximately 10 minutes on foot)

Sumida Matsuri

"Sumida Matsuri" is an event aimed at regional promotion. With the friendly vibes characteristic of downtown areas, tourists can comfortably enjoy this Tokyo event in October 2026.
I especially recommend this event for families with children. At the "Children's Festival" booth, you can experience various activities such as playing with traditional Japanese toys and making handmade toys. On the lawn area, you can also enjoy futsal and target games. There are also exhibition booths featuring fire trucks and police motorcycles, which are very popular with vehicle-loving children.
Please enjoy a wonderful time with your whole family while eating yakitori and shaved ice.
Information:
- Date: Early October 2026
- Access: Walking distance from Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line "Kinshicho Station"

Yanaka Matsuri

Yanaka Matsuri is a festival created by and for the people who live in Yanaka. Unlike events designed with tourism in mind, the real stars of this festival are the children who have grown up in this neighborhood.
At the venue, Hatsune no Mori, local elementary and junior high school students perform brass band music, Japanese taiko drumming, and kids' dance routines, while the audience cheers them on with enthusiastic shouts of encouragement.
The food stalls are also run by local residents, and you can see familiar faces exchanging warm smiles and conversation throughout the grounds.
One of the defining charms of this festival is the rare opportunity to feel, up close, the tight-knit bonds that exist within the local community — something that is difficult to access as a passing tourist.
It is a recommended event for anyone who wants to experience the everyday life of a neighborhood and feel the warmth of the connections between its people.
- Date: Mid-October 2026 (exact date TBD)
- Venue: Disaster Prevention Plaza "Hatsune no Mori"
- Address: 5-4-21 Yanaka, Taito-ku, Tokyo

Don't Miss the Yanaka Kiku Matsuri Festival Held Alongside It!

Around the venue of Yanaka Matsuri, the Yanaka Kiku Matsuri Festival is also held, where an array of meticulously cultivated chrysanthemum varieties are put on display.
The highlight is the exhibition of Kiku Ningyo (chrysanthemum dolls) — figures depicting historical personalities whose costumes are entirely adorned with different varieties of chrysanthemums. I found myself stopping in my tracks, completely captivated by the sight.
And if you visit this festival, there is one thing you absolutely must try: Kikuzake. During this season, it is an old custom to drink sake with chrysanthemum petals floating in the cup and pray for good health and freedom from illness.
At the Yanaka Kiku Matsuri Festival, you can do more than simply admire flowers — you can actually experience Japan's seasonal customs and traditions of prayer.
Please take this opportunity to wrap yourself in the fragrance of chrysanthemums and spend a moment connecting with Japan's autumn culture.
- Date: Mid-October 2026 (exact date TBD)
- Venue: Daienji Temple
- Address: 3-1-2 Yanaka, Taito-ku, Tokyo

Recommended Events Where Japanese Culture and Halloween Come Together
Harajuku Omotesando Hello Halloween Parade

Harajuku in October is enveloped in a Halloween mood, making it a perfect Tokyo event for October 2026. Born as Japan's first Halloween parade, the "Harajuku Omotesando Hello Halloween Parade" is a costume parade that walks approximately 1km through the streets of Harajuku and Omotesando.
Watching children who have registered in advance walk in their creative costumes is sure to bring smiles to your face.
During this period, Halloween-themed events are held throughout the city. My way of enjoying this season is to tour cafes and restaurants and taste Halloween-limited menus. Please be sure to check them out!

Annual October Gourmet Events Representing "Shokuyoku no Aki" — The Season When Food Tastes Best
Japan has a phrase called Shokuyoku no Aki (the season when food tastes the best). As the summer heat fades and seasonal ingredients come into abundance, this is a time of year when the joy of eating naturally grows.
The streets fill with new rice, mushrooms, fresh fish, and freshly harvested vegetables and fruits — the generous bounty of nature.
Alongside this, every October, gourmet events where you can fully enjoy the flavors of autumn are held all across Japan.
Food savored in the comfortable outdoor air is something special, adding vivid color to the memories of your trip.
If you're planning a Tokyo event in October 2026, here are some unmissable highlights.
Shimokitazawa Curry Festival

The Shimokitazawa Curry Festival is a signature event in Shimokitazawa, where the entire neighborhood transforms into a curry theme park.
During the festival, not only dedicated curry restaurants, but also cafes, izakayas, bars, ramen shops, and bakeries take part, each offering a uniquely crafted dish. From classic European-style curry and soup curry to curry bread and inventive creative curries, you'll be spoiled for choice on what to try first.
One thing I personally look forward to every year is the stamp rally. You collect stamps by eating curry or completing missions, and the number of stamps you gather earns you prizes.
As a curry lover myself, my annual goal is to collect 20 stamps and get my hands on the limited-edition original T-shirt. The joy of achieving that goal is part of what makes it an unforgettable memory.
Be sure to take on the challenge like a game while enjoying food strolling and exploring the neighborhood.
- Dates: Early to late October 2026 (exact dates TBD)
- Venue: Around Shimokitazawa Station
- Access: Direct from Odakyu Line / Keio Inokashira Line "Shimokitazawa" Station
- Admission: Free

Tokyo Night Market

Tokyo Night Market is a night festival where you can enjoy the atmosphere of an Asian night market right in the heart of the city.
The venue lines up food trucks reminiscent of Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam, letting you stroll and snack surrounded by the aroma of spices and herbs.
On the stage at the back, live performances take place, and rhythms pour out from the DJ booth, filling the entire venue with the natural energy of one big party. On the day I visited, the place was buzzing with people swaying to the music, drinks in hand, enjoying street food.
The open, friendly atmosphere means it's perfectly natural to clink glasses with someone at the next table or strike up a conversation sparked by the music.
You might even make new friends to share a Tokyo night with.
- Dates: October 21 – October 25, 2026

Hokkaido Fair in Yoyogi

The Hokkaido Fair in Yoyogi is a popular event where you can fully enjoy the flavors of Japan's northern land without ever leaving Tokyo.
Hokkaido, renowned for its seafood, dairy products, and sweets, is a truly special culinary treasure for Japanese people, and every year many eagerly await this fair.
The venue is packed with Instagram-worthy dishes — generously topped seafood rice bowls loaded with salmon roe and scallops, and desserts featuring sweet melon crowned with rich soft-serve ice cream.
Of everything on offer, my top recommendation is Zuwai Kōra-mori (snow crab meat and crab miso served in the shell). The shredded crab meat filling the shell is beautifully sweet, and the richness of the crab miso adds depth, so that every bite delivers layer upon layer of umami. It was simply outstanding.
It's the kind of event that will leave you genuinely wanting to visit Hokkaido for real.
- Dates: Early October 2026 (exact dates TBD)
- Venue: Yoyogi Park
- Address: 2-chome Jinnan, Shibuya, Tokyo

Kyushu Tourism & Local Products Fair in Yoyogi

The Kyushu Tourism & Local Products Fair in Yoyogi is a gourmet event where you can explore the different regions of Kyushu through food, all without leaving Tokyo. Kyushu's food culture varies greatly from area to area, and even within the same region, each locality has a distinctly individual character.
The venue lines up beloved local specialties that draw long queues even back in Kyushu itself — Hakata ramen, Miyazaki chicken, Kumamoto horse sashimi, and much more.
I enjoyed making my way through the flavors of each region with a glass of shochu in hand. Shochu is a distilled spirit synonymous with Kyushu, and its aroma and taste vary widely depending on the base ingredient — sweet potato, barley, and others.
Paired with savory grilled meats and bold seasonings, it's a perfect match, and I was reminded just how inseparable shochu is from Kyushu's food culture.
For food enthusiasts who want to conquer all of Kyushu's famous dishes in a single day without leaving Tokyo, this festival is an absolute must.
- Dates: Early October 2026 (exact dates TBD)
- Venue: Yoyogi Park Event Plaza, Zone B
- Address: 2-3 Jinnan, Shibuya, Tokyo

Earth Garden

Earth Garden is a community festival where you can experience a lifestyle in harmony with nature and get a real feel for sustainable values.
The venue brings together not only dishes made with organic ingredients and natural drinks, but also eco-friendly goods, fair-trade products, and clothing and accessories made from natural materials — stalls where you can sense the story behind each maker.
Rather than simply "buying," you can directly ask the people behind the products who they are and what inspired their work, and before you know it, conversations begin and the distance between people closes considerably.
It's a perfect event for anyone who wants to search for a one-of-a-kind find, is interested in sustainable living, or simply wants to feel the warmth of a local community.
Do drop by on a whim and discover your own unexpected encounter.
