Shibuya Event 2026 Published: Jul 28, 2024
Updated: Mar 21, 2026

Having been born and raised in Shibuya, I've watched Tokyo's evolution and enduring charm, as well as its streetscapes, for many years. While the city's landscape and atmosphere continue to change with the times, Tokyo has consistently maintained its unique and irreplaceable appeal throughout every era.

However, it's also true that many spots continue to develop in increasingly complex ways year after year, making it a city that's becoming difficult for first-time foreign visitors to fully enjoy. In fact, when my friend from Australia visited last time, he said, "There are too many spots to see, and I don't know how to tour the city to enjoy it deeply."

This is why I, having been born and raised in Tokyo, would like to recommend tours where you can have the city guided by local guides like myself who know Tokyo inside and out. Magical Trip offers numerous local tours that guide you through the city efficiently and allow you to enjoy it deeply.

Due to their high quality, they were selected for TripAdvisor's Best of the Best for two consecutive years, 2024 and 2025.

They offer a wide variety of tours, including the award-winning Tokyo Bar Hopping Night Tour in Shinjuku, the Finest Quality Sushi & Tempura Dining Experience in Ginza where you can enjoy Japan's finest sushi, and the Shibuya Bar Hopping Night Tour in Tokyo in vibrant Shibuya, the heart of youth culture.

Just having commentary doubles or even triples Tokyo's enjoyment. When you come to Tokyo, don't just enjoy events, but please deeply enjoy each neighborhood with the guidance of local guides.

The Powerful "Mikoshi" Procession Through Central Shibuya

One of the highlights of Reitaisai is the "Mikoshi" procession where large groups of people parade through Shibuya's streets. Watching carriers in traditional festival attire called "Happi" powerfully march through the urban landscape typically filled with trendy shops and cafés creates an otherworldly impact.

The dynamic swaying of the Mikoshi to spirited chants is absolutely spectacular and provides tourists with a photogenic and memorable experience. This is an excellent opportunity to feel the energy of Japanese festivals firsthand, so be sure to witness it up close.

The Spectacular Gathering of 14 Mikoshi in Front of SHIBUYA109!

The climactic highlight of Reitaisai is when 14 Mikoshi gather in front of SHIBUYA109. The sight of regional Mikoshi arriving one after another in front of Tokyo's iconic landmark SHIBUYA109, enveloped in heat and cheers, is truly magnificent.

This scene perfectly symbolizes "the fusion of tradition and cutting-edge culture," allowing tourists to feel a sense of unity as if participating in the festival while taking photos and cheering along with the carriers' chants.

Experience Japan's Unique "Ennichi" Culture at the Shrine

During Reitaisai, the grounds of Konno Hachimangu Shrine feature "Ennichi" (festival stall areas) where visitors can experience traditional Japanese festival culture. Ennichi features rows of small stalls and tents offering local foods like Yakisoba and Takoyaki.

The attraction also includes traditional games like "goldfish scooping" and "Yoyo Tsuri (water balloon fishing game)" that you can try. Enjoying Ennichi together with local people provides a deeper understanding of Japanese everyday culture.

Traditional Performances at the Kaguraden

During Reitaisai, traditional Japanese performing arts are showcased at the Kaguraden within Konno Hachimangu Shrine's grounds. Kaguraden is a stage-like building within the shrine premises where dance performances, Japanese drums, and folk songs are performed.

These performances are special offerings of gratitude and prayer to the gods, allowing visitors to experience Japanese traditional culture in a solemn atmosphere. Tourists can freely observe and feel the performers' intensity up close. This is also an opportunity to authentically experience Japanese music and dance, so be sure to stop by.

Don't Miss the Events Where You Can Enjoy Bon Odori, a Quintessential Part of Japanese Summer!

Bon Odori is a traditional dance performed during Obon, a Japanese ancestral memorial event where the spirits of ancestors are welcomed back. Dancers form a circle around a wooden tower called a Yagura, and because the choreography is simple, anyone can join in right away.

Events where you can enjoy this Bon Odori are held right here in Shibuya as well.

MIYASHITA PARK BON DANCE

Source: PR TIMES

This is an annual Bon Odori event held at the rooftop lawn plaza on the 4th floor of MIYASHITA PARK, approximately a 3-minute walk from Shibuya Station.

What makes this event so unique is the fusion of traditional Bon Odori with DJ dance music. Having attended myself, I can say the sense of unity — dancing freely around the Yagura and letting the music move you — felt just like being at a music festival.

Even if you don't know the dance moves, you can simply watch the people around you and follow along, so first-timers should absolutely dive right in without hesitation.

At the venue, you can enjoy festival street food such as yakisoba and tacos, as well as booths offering sake and wine from all over Japan. You can also experience classic Japanese festival games like Shateki, where you use a cork gun to aim for prizes, and ring toss.

  • Date: TBA (September 27 and September 28, 2025)
  • Access: 3-minute walk from Shibuya Station (JR Yamanote Line, Saikyo Line, Shonan-Shinjuku Line / Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line, Ginza Line, Fukutoshin Line / Tokyu Toyoko Line, Den-en-toshi Line / Keio Inokashira Line)

Tenku Yume Matsuri

Source: FASHION PRESS

This is a festival held on the rooftop of SHIBUYA SKY, an observation facility directly connected to Shibuya Station, approximately 230 meters above ground.

There are two highlights to look forward to. The first is Bon Odori performed on a stage at the rooftop. Dancing to original music while overlooking the night view of Tokyo is a breathtaking experience.

The sound of live taiko drumming and the calls of Chindonya — traditional Japanese performers who play instruments as they parade through the streets — fill the air, and I was genuinely moved by the energy when I visited.

The second highlight is an area called "Tenku no Yume Kairo" on the 46th floor's SKY GALLERY. Here, you can write your dreams on Tanzaku, small strips of paper traditionally used for wishes, and display them alongside Chochin, traditional Japanese lanterns. The atmosphere is truly magical and dreamlike.

  • Date: TBD
  • Access: 1-minute walk from Shibuya Station (Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line)
  • Admission:
  • - Entry before 15:00: Adults (12 and over) ¥2,700 / Children (ages 6–11) ¥1,200

To enjoy the festivals held in Shibuya more deeply, why not participate in a tour where you can learn about Japanese culture and traditions while walking through the city with a local guide?

The Asakusa Cultural Walk & Matcha Making Tour provides careful explanations of knowledge that even Japanese people might not know, such as Shinto concepts, the meaning of Mikoshi (portable shrines), and the origins of Ennichi (temple festivals). The attractive point is that you can experience real Japanese culture that isn't covered in tourist guidebooks.

If you ask knowledgeable guides about tips for enjoying festivals more, recommended street food, and hidden gem spots, your trip will become even more fulfilling.

Recommended Food Events to Enjoy in Yoyogi Park in September 2026

Yoyogi Park, just one train stop from Shibuya Station and about a 3-minute walk from Harajuku Station, is one of Tokyo's largest and most iconic urban parks. At the park's Event Plaza, international festivals featuring food and culture from around the world are held nearly every weekend.

All events are free to enter, so feel free to stop by as part of your Shibuya sightseeing. These outdoor gatherings are a fantastic Shibuya event September 2026 extension that lets you explore global cultures just minutes from the city center.

Namaste India

Source: Official website

This is one of Japan's largest Indian festivals, which launched in 1993. With approximately 200,000 visitors over just two days, the event is immensely popular. The moment you step into the Yoyogi Park Event Plaza, you're enveloped in the aroma of spices, and the atmosphere buzzes with an energy that makes you feel as though you've been transported to India itself.

The biggest draw is undoubtedly the food. Dozens of food stalls line the venue offering authentic curry, biryani, chai, and much more. I personally found myself wandering from stall to stall without stopping — each one uses spices differently, so you never get tired of it.

On stage, classical Indian dance performances are showcased, letting you immerse yourself in Indian culture through your eyes and ears as well as your palate. There's also a corner where you can dress in a sari, India's traditional garment, and take commemorative photos — perfect for those who love to capture every moment.

  • Date: September 26–27, 2026
  • Access: 3-minute walk from Harajuku Station (JR) / 3-minute walk from Yoyogi-koen Station (Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line)
  • Admission: Free

China Festival

Source: Official website

Launched in 2017, this is one of Japan's largest Chinese culture festivals. Approximately 150 food and merchandise booths fill the Yoyogi Park Event Plaza, making it a luxurious event where you can sample the "Four Great Cuisines of China" — Beijing, Sichuan, Shanghai, and Fujian — all in one place.

A personal recommendation is the numbing, spicy flavors of Sichuan cuisine. Malatang — a dish where you choose various ingredients and simmer them in a spicy broth — had long lines of eager visitors waiting to try it.

There's also a tasting corner for baijiu, China's national spirit, where you can sample brands rarely found in Japan, making it a paradise for those who love a good drink.

The stage comes alive with live performances by artists of Chinese origin and traditional performing arts, while booths representing various Chinese cities offer insights into regional tourism and local specialty products.

  • Date: TBD
  • Access: 3-minute walk from Harajuku Station (JR) / 3-minute walk from Yoyogi-koen Station (Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line)
  • Admission: Free
