Notable Art Events in Tokyo for April 2025
In April, when cherry blossoms bloom in Tokyo, many major exhibitions are scheduled at museums. Taito Ward's Ueno area in particular has a concentration of venues hosting Tokyo Art Event 2025 programs, including the National Museum of Western Art, the National Museum, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. If you're visiting Ueno, I recommend checking out multiple events.
Japanese World Expositions 1970-2005
Source:Official website
Japan has hosted five World Expositions starting with the 1970 Osaka Expo. The sixth Osaka Expo will be held in 2025. To mark this momentous year, there will be an exhibition showcasing valuable architectural design materials from past World Expositions.
The highlight of this Tokyo Art Event 2025 is the opportunity to appreciate special architectural designs as art forms that crystallize technology and beauty. The World Expositions held multiple times since the latter half of the 20th century were highly significant events for Japan's economy and society, attracting considerable attention. Particularly noteworthy each time were the modern and distinctive architectural designs of pavilions and entire venues.
This exhibition will display past materials, allowing visitors to view precious architectural drawings and planning documents for various facilities. What impressed me was the intricate beauty of hand-drawn plans from the 1960s and 70s.
If you're interested in Japanese architectural art, I highly recommend visiting the National Archives of Modern Architecture.

Mingei: The Beauty of Randomness - Objects That Moved Naoto Fukasawa
Source:Official website
(※ Held in Chiba this year)
This exhibition introduces traditional folk crafts and their makers from across Japan. Mingei refers to handicrafts and everyday items made by ordinary people rather than professional artists. The venue is located in Chiba city, accessible by train within one hour from Tokyo.
The key aspect of this Tokyo Art Event 2025 is that visitors can experience both the warmth of everyday items and their artistic beauty simultaneously. The exhibition features items like tea bowls, tea utensils, and pre-19th century candlesticks that allow you to feel very close to the presence of people who used these items in their daily lives.
The tea utensils are particularly interesting as they reflect regional characteristics, natural environments, and living conditions of different areas. You'll be surprised to find that while these are everyday items for living, each piece is filled with delicate beauty and feels like a work of art.
Please experience the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship that continues today, which can be considered art, and its profound traditions.

This exhibition showcases 88 Western paintings from the collections of the San Diego Museum of Art in America and the National Museum of Western Art in Japan. For first-time museum visitors and those unfamiliar with art or Western paintings, it introduces ways to appreciate paintings from the perspective of "where to look to enjoy this painting."
The appeal of this exhibition is the opportunity to view famous Western paintings from the Renaissance period to the late 19th century all at once. As part of the Tokyo Art Event 2025 lineup, it chronologically introduces Renaissance portraits, Spanish still lifes, and landscape paintings from various periods, with detailed explanations of how new painting techniques developed from traditional methods in the 19th century.

"Spectrum Spectrum" at Ginza Maison Hermès
Source:GQ JAPAN
"Spectrum Spectrum" is an exhibition held at "Maison Hermès," the building of fashion brand Hermès in Ginza. Seven artists, including two Japanese creators and an artist from Germany, will participate by exhibiting paintings, ceramics, installations, and other art pieces.
"Spectrum Spectrum" is one of the most anticipated displays in the Tokyo Art Event 2025 calendar, offering serene and high-class artistic expressions that align with Hermès' aesthetic. While the seven artists' works are independent of each other, when I visited, I had the impression that the pieces were in dialogue with one another within the same space.
What left the strongest impression on me was the installation by Japanese artist Michiko Tsuda. It was a piece that made me want to reflect on it again after viewing it.
The 8th and 9th floors of the Hermès Ginza store function as an art gallery. The luxurious Maison Hermès building has become a symbolic presence in Ginza. If you visit Ginza, be sure to stop by the art gallery.

The Kaji Collection - The Colorful Jewels, Beauty of Enamel
Source:Official website
The National Museum of Western Art is hosting an exhibition of beautiful "enamel" collections that shine like jewels.
Enamel is a craft where glass-like glazes are applied to metal surfaces. This exhibition showcases 150 pieces from the enamel collection specially donated by Japanese jewelry artist Kaji.
A major highlight of this Tokyo Art Event 2025 is the captivating beauty and brilliance of the enamel colors. The rich hues change depending on how light hits them, sparkling like gemstones. Many pieces in the Kaji Collection were produced in France during the Art Nouveau period, and when I visited, I was mesmerized by the elegance of the colors and patterns.
The Kaji Collection also includes posters by Mucha, who represents the Art Nouveau era. If you'd like to see this elegant and beautiful collection, please visit the National Museum of Western Art.

Notable Art-Related Events in Tokyo in May 2025
In May, Golden Week holidays begin in Japan, and various spots become crowded with people. At the National Museum in Ueno, multiple full-scale exhibitions related to "ukiyo-e," Japan's representative art form, will be held.
Ukiyo-e In Play
Source:l-tike
This is an exhibition themed on "ukiyo-e" held at the Tokyo National Museum. "Ukiyo-e" is a Japanese cultural art form that flourished from the 17th to 19th centuries using woodblock printing. At this Tokyo Art Event 2025, works by 85 contemporary artists from Japan and abroad who have created "contemporary ukiyo-e" will be displayed.
The appeal of this event is enjoying new ukiyo-e depicted with contemporary sensibilities. Participants include not only painters but also manga artists, architects, designers, and artists active in various genres. These artists collaborate with printmaking institutes that inherit the elaborate techniques used to create ukiyo-e woodblocks to produce contemporary ukiyo-e.
For example, illustrations by Anno Moyoko, a popular female manga artist in Japan, will also be displayed as ukiyo-e.
Additionally, this is a simultaneous event with the Immersive Theater New Japonism exhibition and Tsutaya Juzaburo exhibition introduced in this article. If you have a viewing ticket for either one, you can also view Ukiyo-e In Play at the same time. If you like ukiyo-e, please check them out together.

Source:Pia
Tsutaya Juzaburo was a publisher in the late 18th century who published famous ukiyo-e prints by artists like Utamaro and Sharaku. He is also known for building an enormous business through publishing. This Tokyo Art Event 2025 features exhibitions themed around Juzaburo's diverse activities, the ukiyo-e prints he was involved with, and the culture of the Edo period in which he lived.
The highlight of this event is that it's an exhibition covering 18th century Japanese culture and the activities of Juzaburo, who was considered a media mogul of his time. Juzaburo is a figure attracting so much attention in Japan that a drama based on his life is being broadcast extensively in 2025.
By viewing this exhibition, you should be able to appreciate his business acumen in building a massive content business using various Edo cultural elements, including ukiyo-e prints, popular songs, and theater of the time.

Edo-Tokyo Museum Collection - Life and Food in Edo-Tokyo
Source:Official website
The Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum is holding a special exhibition themed around the history of life and food in Tokyo. From the 17th century to the mid-19th century, Tokyo was called Edo. This exhibition showcases how meals and food in Tokyo have changed from the Edo period through the 20th and 21st centuries.
The most interesting point is understanding how popular Japanese dishes like modern ramen and katsu were created. After the 19th century, traditional Japanese cuisine was uniquely fused with cuisine introduced from foreign countries. Visitors to this Tokyo Art Event 2025 can explore these culinary transformations chronologically.
For example, meat dishes became popular in the 19th century due to Western culinary influences. Also, Western desserts such as ice cream gradually appeared and were adapted to suit Japanese culture. This exhibition allows you to learn about these developments in an entertaining way through a chronological presentation.
Another fascinating element I found was the valuable materials such as rankings of popular restaurants from before the 18th century. If you're interested in Tokyo's food culture and cuisine during your trip to Japan, I definitely recommend visiting the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

There will also be an exhibition featuring female artists who continue Japanese traditional crafts and techniques. Let's enjoy art that uses delicate and magnificent traditional techniques by female artisans who have received little attention in Japan until now.

Van Gogh Exhibition: The Painter's Dream Connected by Family
Source:Official website
A special exhibition of Vincent van Gogh will be held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum from September to December. Art treasured by Van Gogh's family is scheduled to be displayed. Thirty pieces of Van Gogh's works from his early to late periods, as well as collections reportedly gathered by Van Gogh and four handwritten letters, will be exhibited.
This exhibition also focuses on Van Gogh's family, who made great efforts until Van Gogh's paintings were recognized. It introduces the achievements and relationships with Van Gogh of his supporting brother, his brother's wife, and nephew.
Through family connections, this special exhibition provides insight into Van Gogh as a person. The self-portrait reportedly painted by Van Gogh in his later years that will be displayed this time seems to deeply convey Van Gogh's pure character along with his beautiful and unique brushwork.
If you're interested in Van Gogh or planning to visit Tokyo between September and December, why not visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum as part of your Tokyo Art Event 2025 itinerary?
