What is Hakodate?

Hakodate is a port town located at the southern tip of Hokkaido, known as a popular tourist destination famous for its fresh seafood and beautiful night views.

It has a history of being one of the first ports opened for overseas trade in the 19th century. As a result, Western culture flowed in, and Japanese-Western eclectic buildings such as churches and Western-style mansions still remain today.

The night view from Mount Hakodate is particularly renowned as one of Japan's three great night views. The unique topography sandwiched between the sea and the band of light created by the city lights radiates an impressively beautiful glow.

Additionally, the area is popular among travelers who want to enjoy food, with abundant local gourmet options including sushi and ramen made with fresh seafood.

Things to Enjoy in Hakodate

Things to Enjoy in Hakodate

In Hakodate, you can enjoy attractive experiences such as historical walks, night views, and gourmet food in a compact area.

If you love history, it is recommended to walk through the area developed as a star-shaped park and the district dotted with churches and Western-style mansions while reflecting on the atmosphere of the time when Japanese and Western cultures intersected.

At night, you can savor the beautiful scenery that is said to be one of Japan's most representative night views.

In terms of food, you can compare different styles of "port town gourmet" throughout the day, including seafood rice bowls, local ramen, sushi, and local hamburgers.

The ability to pack in such diverse experiences even during a short stay is a major characteristic of Hakodate sightseeing.

The Best Time to Visit Hakodate

The Best Time to Visit Hakodate

The best season for Hakodate sightseeing is from April to October when the climate is mild and walking around the town is easy.

  • In April and May, the cherry blossoms at Goryokaku Park reach their peak, and the star-shaped moat is adorned in soft pink.
  • July and August are cool and comfortable, and it is the season when seafood such as sea urchin and horsehair crab becomes delicious.
  • Furthermore, from September to October, Goryokaku and the mountains are dyed in autumn colors, and you can enjoy a calm autumn atmosphere along with the night views.

On the other hand, winter is somewhat more challenging due to sub-zero average temperatures and snow. However, the night view is even more beautiful in the clear air, and it is a season when hot springs and warm dishes feel exceptional.

Note that if you visit in winter, sufficiently warm clothing is necessary.

  • You can travel at your own pace and stop at other popular spots such as Lake Toya and Onuma Park along the way.

For those who want to enjoy harbor views and the nighttime atmosphere, choosing a hotel in the bay area around Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse or the Motomachi area allows you to enjoy both dining and night views.

A 2-Days Trip Itinerary from Sapporo to Hakodate to Fully Enjoy Hakodate (Day 1)

Here is Day 1 of a specific model itinerary for a 2-days trip itinerary from Sapporo to Hakodate to fully enjoy the city.

12:00PM: Arrive in Hakodate / Enjoy Local Gourmet Food around Hakodate Station

When you arrive at Hakodate Station around noon, start with lunch in the area around the station. Savor Hakodate's fresh seafood and local gourmet specialties.

Within walking distance from the station, you'll find a diverse range of restaurants just a few minutes on foot, including sea urchin specialty shops, popular seafood rice bowl restaurants, local burger shops, and famous shio ramen establishments.

Uni Murakami Hakodate Main Store

Uni Murakami Hakodate Main Store is a popular restaurant committed to serving additive-free fresh sea urchin.

Their sea urchin rice bowl and sea urchin sashimi, made with fresh sea urchin processed in-house, are characterized by a melt-in-your-mouth sweetness and rich umami flavor.

I was moved after just one bite, thinking "So this is what real sea urchin tastes like."

The restaurant is a cozy space with only about 8 tables, and reservations are not accepted, so lines form from morning. However, it's definitely worth the wait.

Visit with plenty of time to spare and take your time savoring the sea urchin that Hakodate is famous for.

Donburi Ya

Donburi Ya
Source:Tabelog

Donburi Ya, just a short walk from Hakodate Station, is a restaurant where you can enjoy a wide variety of seafood rice bowls.

The secret to its popularity lies in the exceptional freshness that only a restaurant run by a wholesaler can offer, combined with relatively reasonable prices.

My personal recommendation is the 4-color rice bowl. You can choose any 4 toppings from 10 options including sea urchin, salmon roe, and tuna. It's perfect for when you're in the mood to try a little bit of everything.

This restaurant is bustling daily with both locals and tourists who come seeking fresh seafood.

Lucky Pierrot Hakodate Ekimae Branch

Lucky Pierrot, which has been crowned Japan's No. 1 local burger, is a local hamburger restaurant that represents Hakodate.

My top recommendation is the Chinese Chicken Burger. It's filled with several pieces of piping hot karaage (Japanese-style fried chicken) coated in a sweet and savory sauce, paired with crisp lettuce and fluffy buns for a hearty, satisfying meal.

The exterior and interior have a lively, playful atmosphere, and each branch has a different interior theme.

Because of this, visiting several branches to enjoy the different atmospheres is also recommended. This is a restaurant where you can fully experience the local charm that has been loved by residents for years.

Shin Hakodate Shio Ramen Ryuho

Shin Hakodate Shio Ramen Ryuho

In Hakodate, often called the birthplace of shio (salt) ramen, Shin Hakodate Shio Ramen Ryuho is a must-visit spot for lunch.

Their specialty is the Golden Shio Ramen, featuring a beautiful golden broth so clear you can see the bottom of the bowl.

It has an exquisite flavor profile where you can taste the rich umami of chicken and pork, yet the aftertaste remains light and refreshing rather than heavy.

The noodles are gently wavy egg noodles with a springy texture that pairs perfectly with the broth.

This is a calm, relaxed restaurant reminiscent of old-fashioned Japanese ramen shops.

1:30PM: Visit Goryokaku, Japan's First Western-Style Fortress

Goryokaku, Japan's First Western-Style Fortress

After lunch, head to the Goryokaku area by streetcar or bus.

Goryokaku was where the Hakodate Magistrate's Office, a Japanese government institution, was located in the 19th century, and it is Japan's first Western-style star-shaped fortress.

It was built for defense against foreign ships and later became the stage for one of the last battles fought by samurai, where the new Meiji government forces clashed with the former Tokugawa shogunate forces.

Today, it is open to the public as a park where visitors can enjoy beautiful scenery that changes with each season.

On this 2-days trip itinerary from Sapporo to Hakodate, Goryokaku is an essential stop that offers both historical significance and natural beauty.

Highlight 1: Hakodate Magistrate's Office

Hakodate Magistrate's Office

The Hakodate Magistrate's Office, reconstructed at the center of the park, is a Japanese-style government building that was originally built as a hub for administrative functions and diplomacy.

Based on design documents and archaeological excavations, it was faithfully reconstructed in 2010.

Inside, exhibits introduce the history of Hakodate during the late Edo period, the work of those who served at the Magistrate's Office, and life in this port town where Japanese and Western cultures intersected.

The beautiful pillars characteristic of traditional Japanese architecture, the shoji (traditional Japanese sliding paper doors), and the soft light filtering through the garden create a picturesque atmosphere no matter where you look.

Highlight 2: The Beautiful Full View of Goryokaku from Goryokaku Tower

The Beautiful Full View of Goryokaku from Goryokaku Tower

To take in the star-shaped form of Goryokaku in its entirety, the approximately 100-meter-tall Goryokaku Tower is a must-visit.

Looking down from the observation floor, you can see the star-shaped fortress surrounded by moats, the cityscape around it, and even Mount Hakodate in the distance. At night, you can enjoy its magical illuminated appearance.

The exhibits inside the tower explain how Goryokaku was built and what role it played as Japan transformed from the samurai era into a modern nation.

It is a spot where you can enjoy both history and spectacular views at the same time.

Highlight 3: Goryokaku's Natural Scenery That Changes with the Seasons

Goryokaku's Natural Scenery That Changes with the Seasons

Goryokaku Park is a beloved relaxation spot that locals enjoy as a walking course.

In spring, it is known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, with approximately 1,600 cherry trees blooming along the moats.

In summer, lush green lawns and trees create pleasant shade, while in autumn, you can enjoy photogenic scenery with autumn foliage reflected in the star-shaped moats.

In winter, the park becomes a quiet, snow-covered landscape, with the contrast of white and gray creating an atmosphere like a scene from a storybook.

Since the atmosphere is completely different depending on the season you visit, be sure to capture the unique scenery of your visit in photographs.

5:00PM: Savor Hakodate's Exquisite Cuisine

After returning to the city center from Goryokaku, treat yourself to a slightly luxurious dinner time as the main event of your trip.

The cuisine is a traditional kaiseki-style course using seafood caught in nearby waters and seasonal vegetables.

From the sashimi to the clear soup and assorted simmered dishes, every plate reflects the craftsmanship and depth of Japanese cuisine that brings out the best in its ingredients.

I was deeply moved by the beautiful presentation and delicate flavors.

This is a recommended restaurant for those who want to thoroughly enjoy cuisine that reflects Hakodate's four seasons in a calm Japanese atmosphere.

Sushidokoro Minami

Sushidokoro Minami is one of Hakodate's most popular sushi restaurants and a highly acclaimed establishment that has been awarded one Michelin star.

The sushi served here is Edo-mae style.

The toppings are not simply sliced and placed on rice; they are prepared with extra care such as marinating, curing with vinegar, or lightly searing before being formed into sushi.

Each piece, whether tuna, white fish, or shellfish, is prepared to bring out its maximum flavor, making it impressive how distinctly different each piece tastes.

This is a recommended restaurant for those who want to thoroughly enjoy sushi that fuses Hokkaido's fresh seafood with Edo-mae techniques.

Tsune Sushi is a locally beloved restaurant that has been popular for many years, where you can enjoy fresh sushi in a homey atmosphere.

It has been selected as a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide Hokkaido edition.

When I visited, I tried the chef's recommended herring sashimi. It was my first time eating herring sashimi, and I was impressed by its rich fat content and strong umami flavor.

The prices are very reasonable considering the quality of the ingredients.

This is a restaurant I would especially recommend to those who want to simply enjoy Hakodate's seafood at a well-established local gem.

Takahashi

Unagi-dokoro Takahashi is a long-established eel specialty restaurant that has been loved by locals for many years. It is a highly acclaimed restaurant that was featured in The 2017 special Hokkaido edition of the Michelin Guide.

The eel I had was thicker than I imagined, incredibly tender when I took a bite, and had a wonderful richness of flavor from the fat.

The special house sauce, which has been replenished for over 40 years, has a perfect balance of sweetness and depth, pairing excellently with the eel.

Takeout is available, but to enjoy the fresh aroma and texture, I recommend savoring it slowly inside the restaurant.

7:00PM: Enjoy the stunning night view from Mt. Hakodate, counted among Japan's three most famous night views

Enjoy the stunning night view from Mt. Hakodate, counted among Japan's three most famous night views

After dinner, head to Mount Hakodate to see the beautiful night view.

Take the streetcar or bus to the ropeway's Sanroku Station, then ride the gondola for about 3 minutes to reach the summit, where a breathtaking panoramic night view awaits you.

The sight of the narrow peninsula stretching into the sea, flanked by water on both sides and glowing like a ribbon of light, is highly praised by night view enthusiasts around the world and is known as a "million-dollar night view."

In winter, the crisp air offers particularly clear views, but the strong winds make it extremely cold, so be sure to dress warmly.

In spring and autumn, if you time your arrival at the summit to coincide with sunset, you can leisurely enjoy the gradual transition from sunset to twilight to the full night view.

The view from the Mt. Hakodate Ropeway is also spectacular!

The view from the Mt. Hakodate Ropeway is also spectacular!

Mt. Hakodate Ropeway is a gondola that takes you from Sanroku Station to the summit in about 3 minutes.

From inside the glass-enclosed cabin, you can watch the harbor town's lights and the sea expand below as you ascend. Around sunset, you can enjoy the beautiful sight of the sky's color gradient blending with the night view.

Round-trip tickets can be purchased at Sanroku Station. During tourist season, the ropeway operates at approximately 15-minute intervals, but it gets crowded just before sunset.

My recommendation is to go up a bit early to avoid the crowds and enjoy the view leisurely at the summit café.

Choosing Restaurant Genova as your dinner spot to slowly enjoy the night view is also recommended

"Restaurant Genova" is a restaurant located inside the observation facility on Mount Hakodate. You can enjoy a spectacular dinner with views unique to this mountaintop location.

Reservations are only available for course meals, so if you want to order à la carte, I recommend going during earlier hours.

I visited around 5:00 PM, well before sunset. After enjoying the daytime scenery, I was able to experience the changing colors of the sky and the city lights coming on all in one visit.

Even on very cold days, the window seats offer views that rival the observation deck. This is the perfect dinner spot for those who want to take their time.

Many shops sell out or close by early afternoon, so visiting around 8:00 AM is best.

This neighborhood was home to many foreign settlements after the port opened, and is lined with churches, government buildings, and Western-style residences influenced by Western culture.

From the top of the slopes, you can enjoy panoramic views of the harbor and cityscape. This is a perfect spot on your 2-days trip itinerary from Sapporo to Hakodate to take a leisurely stroll while soaking in Hakodate's retro and exotic atmosphere.

Hakodatesei John Church

Hakodatesei John Church

Hakodatesei John Church was founded in 1874 as Hokkaido's first Anglican church.

After being rebuilt several times due to major fires, the current building was completed in 1979.

The church features a unique design where the entire roof forms the shape of a cross when viewed from above. The white exterior walls with a large cross painted on them give the building a retro yet somewhat modern atmosphere.

The interior features a dome-shaped space, and the soft light streaming through the cross-shaped stained glass is truly impressive.

Interior tours are available mainly from May to November and require reservations.

The exterior can be viewed freely, so be sure to enjoy the unique silhouette and tranquil atmosphere during your 2-days trip itinerary from Sapporo to Hakodate.

On the day I visited, I enjoyed a lightly seared piece of fatty kinki (broadbanded thornyhead). The balance of gentle sweetness and savory char was remarkable, making it a truly memorable piece of sushi.

This is definitely a restaurant to choose when you want to enjoy high-quality sushi in Hakodate.

Japanese Restaurant "Kumonami" is a Japanese cuisine restaurant located inside "UMI TO AKARI" in Yunokawa Onsen. Their seafood rice bowls topped with fresh sashimi and seafood set meals featuring seasonal fish and shellfish are popular choices.

What I particularly recommend is the seafood rice bowl piled high with 11 types of toppings including tuna, salmon, scallops, and salmon roe, almost overflowing from the bowl.

Each piece of seafood is sliced thick and incredibly satisfying to eat, making me truly feel like I was indulging in Hakodate's bounty from the sea.

They also offer plans that combine day-trip hot spring bathing with meals, perfect for those who want to enjoy both onsen and gourmet food together.

Hakodate Menya Ichimonji Hakodate Honten is a popular ramen shop within walking distance from the Yunokawa Onsen area.

Their signature dish is shio (salt) ramen. The soup is made with whole chicken and kombu (kelp) from Minamikayabe, resulting in a clear, transparent appearance.

One sip reveals the rich depth of chicken layered with the umami of kelp, and the gentle saltiness makes you want to drink every last drop.

In my mind, "when it comes to Hakodate's shio ramen, it's Ichimonji" – that's how much I love this place.
