Best Months to Visit for Anime Fans

The best months for anime fans to visit Tokyo are the following three:

1. March

2. August

3. December

Why We Recommend March

In March, Anime Japan, one of the largest Tokyo anime manga events, is held at Tokyo Big Sight. It is a comprehensive event that can be enjoyed by a wide range of attendees, from hardcore anime fans to casual fans who simply want to enjoy anime.

Why We Recommend December

In December, Comiket, Japan's largest Doujinshi festival, is held. Self-published books featuring fan art — Doujinshi — are sold, and hundreds of thousands of people gather for the occasion.

It is an event where people who love anime and manga culture come together and celebrate like a festival, and in recent years, many people from outside Japan have also been joining in.

Furthermore, in December, "Jump Festa," an event dedicated to hugely popular shonen manga and anime such as Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Demon Slayer, is also held.

Why We Recommend August

Comiket is also held in August, where you can enjoy its passionate festival atmosphere. August also features a summer festival at Kanda Myojin Shrine, located near Akihabara, making it a month where you can also experience traditional Japanese culture.

How to Get Tickets for Anime Events in Japan

At Tokyo anime manga events, many different types of tickets are sold within a single event.

The most common system is one where the time slot for entry differs depending on the ticket. For example, at Comiket, there are morning admission tickets and afternoon admission tickets. In addition, there are early admission tickets that allow entry even before the standard morning admission.

As with this early admission ticket, many events offer fast-track tickets that allow holders to enter ahead of all other attendees.

At events where cosplay is permitted, tickets that include admission plus the right to use changing rooms are also sold. At Comiket, priority changing room admission tickets are available.

Furthermore, at events featuring stage performances or merchandise sales, tickets may be sold that include admission plus special benefits for attending the stage show or purchasing merchandise.

For example, at Anime Japan 2026 — a comprehensive Tokyo anime manga event — in addition to the general admission ticket, tickets with stage lottery entry rights and tickets with merchandise and stage lottery entry rights are also available.

Online Ticket Platforms

The most common method at anime manga events is to access a ticket sales site through the official website and purchase tickets online.

For example, at Anime Japan 2026, the ticket page on the official website includes descriptions of each ticket type along with links to the sales site.

Source: Anime Japan

From there, you will be redirected to an external ticketing site where you can follow the instructions to complete your purchase.

Source: Anime Japan

For large-scale Tokyo Anime Manga Events such as AnimeJapan, Comiket, and Tokyo Game Show, tickets can almost always be purchased smoothly from outside Japan as well.

Since anime events offer many types of tickets with varying content, always make sure to carefully read the descriptions of each ticket type and any included benefits before purchasing.

Tips for International Visitors

  • At major Tokyo Anime Manga Events, tickets can sell out at an early stage. If you are interested, decide on your schedule early and purchase as soon as possible. For example, the Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay event held in late October sometimes sees cosplay participation tickets sell out by late September.

Tokyo Game Show also tends to have its Saturday and Sunday general public day tickets sell out very quickly after online pre-sales begin.

  • When attending Tokyo Anime Manga Events, you must always plan ahead for both heat and cold. Many events are held at venues such as Makuhari Messe and Tokyo Big Sight, which are located near the waterfront with nothing around to block the wind or sunlight. Summers can be brutally hot and winters bitterly cold.

On top of that, many events involve waiting and queuing outdoors. Since many attendees end up feeling unwell, make sure to prepare thoroughly in advance so you can enjoy the event to the fullest.

  • Large-scale Tokyo Anime Manga Events get far more crowded than you might expect — the sheer volume of visitors is in a different league from what most people consider "crowded." At shopping-focused events, even if you arrive on time, there may be very little left to buy. Keep this in mind when planning your entry time.
  • At all venues, following the instructions of staff managing and directing queues is a universal rule at Tokyo Anime Manga Events in Japan.

Notable Anime/Manga Events in Tokyo for January 2026

TOKYO FES Jan.

TOKYO FES is a comprehensive Doujinshi event held regularly at Tokyo Big Sight in Odaiba. Doujinshi refers to books created by fans of specific commercial anime or manga titles, containing fan art, manga, and fan fiction stories.

At TOKYO FES, Doujinshi sales events for a wide variety of commercial works are held on-site at the venue on the day of the event.

As you walk through the halls of Tokyo Big Sight, you can not only enjoy Doujinshi from your favorite anime and manga series, but also stop by Doujinshi events for works you may not have encountered before.

TOKYO FES is a mid-sized Doujinshi sales event with approximately 6,000 Doujinshi-selling circles participating and around 30,000 to 50,000 visitors in attendance. Compared to Comiket, which features around 25,000 circles and draws over 200,000 visitors, it is considerably smaller in scale and carries a more relaxed atmosphere.

It is a recommended event for those who want to experience a Japanese Doujinshi event at their own pace — whether to browse the scene or pick up some books.

<Information>

  • Date: January 25, 2026 (2027 dates TBD)
  • Access: Approximately 7-minute walk from Kokusai-Tenjijo Station on the Rinkai Line
  • Admission: 1,200 yen
  • Website: https://www.akaboo.jp/index.html

Tips for Shopping in TOKYO FES Jan.

  • At TOKYO FES, numerous "only events" — doujinshi sales dedicated to a single specific work — are held simultaneously within the same venue.
  • At these only events, fans who truly love that particular work gather together, presenting their creations to an audience of like-minded enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy Doujinshi filled with passionate and uniquely original fan art that can only be found at Tokyo Anime Manga Events like these.
  • Some doujinshi artists participate exclusively in only events and nowhere else, so if you pick up a book and feel even a slight connection to the artist's work, it is highly recommended that you go ahead and buy it.

Notable Anime/Manga Events in Tokyo for February 2026

Wonder Festival Winter

Wonder Festival Winter is an event where handmade figures and garage kits are exhibited and sold. It is a popular event held regularly at Makuhari Messe, an event venue in Chiba Prefecture just next to Tokyo, and in 2026 it will also take place in summer in addition to winter.

On display and for sale are a wide range of sculpted works, including plastic model kits, figure garage kits, plush toys, and costumes. Many of the pieces are of an exceptionally high level and quality, making the event well worth seeing.

When I visited last year, there were countless anime character figures lined up, along with elaborately crafted models of robots, model guns, and even Godzilla.

The highlight of this event is the large number of garage kits available for purchase — assembly-style model kits that let you enjoy the building process yourself.

Items sold as garage kits are not finished products; they may be pre-assembled but unpainted, designed so that you can enjoy completing the final touches yourself.

It is an event that can be enjoyed not only by anime figure enthusiasts, but also by anyone with a love of sculptural art. If you want to build a figure of your favorite anime character yourself, or if you are looking for anime items to add to your home collection, this is definitely an event worth attending.

<Information>

  • Date: February 8, 2026, 10:00–17:00
  • Access: Approximately 5-minute walk from Kaihin-Makuhari Station on the JR Keiyo Line
  • Admission: Advance ticket: 3,500 yen / Door ticket: 4,000 yen / Priority admission ticket: 7,500 yen, and more
  • Website: https://wonfes.jp/specialsite/

Tips for Shopping in Wonder Festival Winter

At Wonder Festival, a large number of assembly-style model kits known as garage kits, as well as finished figures, are displayed and sold. General individuals, manufacturers, and companies all set up booths at this popular Tokyo Anime Manga Event.

  • At Wonder Festival, the items on sale are fundamentally handmade by the exhibitors themselves, which means the number of units available for sale is inherently limited.
  • At both general and manufacturer booths, popular items tend to sell out by early afternoon.
  • For those who want to purchase popular items or enjoy the event before things sell out, it is recommended to buy a one-day admission ticket and enter in the morning.
  • Those with a bigger budget should also check out priority admission tickets, which allow early entry even ahead of the standard morning opening.
  • Items outside the most sought-after popular products tend to remain available into the afternoon, leaving plenty of room for a satisfying shopping experience. Take your time browsing for hidden gems, and do not miss the chance to enjoy the high-level figure displays on show throughout this Tokyo Anime Manga Event.

Tips for Shopping at Anime Japan 2026

At Anime Japan, the main attractions are exhibition and sales booths run by anime production companies, manufacturers, and other businesses. Anime fans can purchase a large selection of official merchandise from their favorite works.

  • Anime Japan is a massive Tokyo anime manga event with a large number of exhibitor booths and an expansive venue. It is nearly impossible to visit every exhibition booth, stage event, and merchandise sales booth.
  • Before attending, narrow down your goals to a few priorities.
  • If buying merchandise from your favorite series is your top priority, head straight to the merchandise area as soon as you enter to avoid missing out. If you have multiple target series, decide on your order of priority in advance.
  • Merchandise for popular titles such as FGO, Blue Archive, and Jujutsu Kaisen, as well as limited-quantity items, sell out extremely quickly. Aim to make your purchases right when the doors open, or at the latest by mid-morning.
  • After finishing your shopping, take your time enjoying the exhibition booths and events at a relaxed pace.

Tips for International Visitors to Anime Japan 2026

  • Anime Japan is a massive event that draws enormous crowds. Come prepared for heavy congestion. You may need to queue for anywhere from several minutes to a few hours just to get in. Since you may end up waiting outdoors even in the rain, always bring rain gear.
  • Basic packing list: drinks, smartphone, folding chair, cash, portable battery pack, light snacks, a clear folder (for collecting handouts), an umbrella suitable for both rain and sun, and a transit IC card loaded with your return fare.
  • Anime Japan offers admission tickets with special benefits. Currently, tickets that allow priority viewing of stage events are available for purchase from outside Japan. If there is a stage event you absolutely want to see, or if you want to watch from near the front, this option is worth considering.
  • There is a food court area where you can enjoy special menus including dishes that appear in anime series. However, it tends to get extremely crowded and may not always be accessible, so bringing your own drinks and light snacks is strongly recommended.

Cosplay Participation Guide for Visitors

To cosplay at Anime Japan, "cosplay registration" is required. You will need to purchase a changing room pass (sold separately from the admission ticket) either in advance or at the door, then register at the venue reception on the day of the event. Please note that if you purchase the pass at the venue on the day, only cash payment is accepted.

The number of cosplayers tends to be smaller than at Comiket, and the atmosphere is more relaxed, which means you can take photos at a more leisurely pace. When photographing cosplayers and especially before posting images on social media, always obtain permission from the individual first.

This is an absolute rule that applies to all cosplay events throughout Japan and must always be observed.

On the day of the event, mini events such as photo events and dance events for cosplayers will be held. Join in actively and make the most of the experience.

Notable Anime/Manga Events in Tokyo for April 2026

At Niconico Chokaigi, you can find official Niconico Douga merchandise, limited-edition items created in collaboration with popular anime, and self-produced CDs and illustrations sold by video creators.

  • A wide range of Hatsune Miku merchandise is available — merchandise whose popularity exploded thanks to Niconico Douga. Unlike mass-produced Miku goods sold by large companies and manufacturers, the highlight here is being able to buy creative project goods made freely by Miku-loving creators themselves.
  • The author's personal recommendation is the illustration collection sold every year, known as "Cho Eshi Ten: IF no Gakkyoku Sekai Ten." It features illustrations by over 100 internet illustrators, each reimagining the iconic PV artwork from famous Hatsune Miku songs in their own unique art style.
  • Featured works include PV illustrations from beloved songs such as "World is Mine," "Melt," and "Hatsune Miku no Shoushitsu."
  • You can enjoy dozens of variations of beautiful and cute Miku illustrations, each rendered in a distinct illustrator's style. Priced at around 4,000 yen, it is a high-satisfaction item that no dedicated fan should miss.
  • Merchandise such as posters, T-shirts, and keychains featuring these Hatsune Miku illustrations are also highly recommended.

Tokyo's Anime and Manga scene influences many of these independent creators. When music lovers from across borders interact, cultural fusion might give birth to new works. The event attracts not only professional music producers but also many people who enjoy "expressing themselves through sound" as a hobby, so feel free to participate!

The event hall at the Tokyo Ryutsu Center has good access from Haneda Airport, making it convenient for international Otaku visitors to stop by.

  • Popular booths featuring well-known Vtubers and online singers can get extremely crowded, which can make it difficult to listen before buying.
  • If you want to shop efficiently, do your listening in advance online. Around two weeks before the event, audio samples from all participating circles become available to stream together on the official website.
  • The official website also lets you check the full list of participating circles along with their social media links.
  • Some circles sell not only CDs but also DL cards with a QR code for downloading the audio. Note that the track listings for the CD and the DL card may differ slightly, so be sure to check the details before purchasing.

At Akihabara Cho Dojin Festival Plus, Doujinshi related primarily to anime girls are sold. As it is not a large-scale Tokyo Anime Manga Event, it does not get particularly crowded, allowing visitors to shop at a relaxed pace.

On the same day and during the same hours as the event, online mail-order sales are also available, where Doujinshi can be purchased as well.

The items sold here tend to be quite niche even by Doujinshi event standards, making this Tokyo Anime Manga Event best suited for those already familiar with Akihabara culture.

At Hakurei Shrine Grand Festival, a wide variety of Touhou Project doujinshi and merchandise are available for purchase.

  • Visitor numbers have been on an upward trend year after year, and the venue tends to get crowded.
  • Be sure to check out the extensive selection of Touhou-specific doujinshi CDs. Booths from well-known circles such as Team Shanghai Alice and Yuuhei Satellite are consistently popular. Limited-edition bags and folders are sometimes distributed to CD buyers, so keep an eye out for those.
  • Event-exclusive plushies of the hugely popular Touhou character plush figures (Fumo) are sold at the event. As these are nearly impossible to buy without a reservation, check the information from the manufacturer, Gift, about one to two months in advance.
  • Acrylic stands, keychains, calendars, and more are also available in large numbers. The author's personal recommendation is everyday-use items such as drink bottles that let you feel a little closer to Touhou in your daily life.

Tips for Shopping in Sunshine Creation 2026 Summer

Sunshine Creation brings together approximately 900 doujinshi circles, with Doujinshi from a wide variety of works available for sale at this Tokyo Anime Manga Event.

  • The majority of visitors tend to be male, and the Doujinshi on sale largely reflect this, with most titles based on anime works popular among male fans. Doujinshi centered on themes such as railways and military are also well represented.
  • Fate/Grand Order is particularly popular here, with a large number of high-quality Doujinshi available for purchase.
  • The overall atmosphere of this Tokyo Anime Manga Event is relatively calm and relaxed, making it easy to strike up a casual conversation with the artists exhibiting their work at their booths. Sharing even a few words about what drew you to their art is something artists genuinely appreciate and can make for a memorable experience. Simple English tends to get through just fine, so do not hesitate to say something.
  • Connecting with fellow fans who share a love for the same works is one of the great pleasures of doujinshi events, so if you have the chance, try reaching out and engaging with the people around you at the venue.

Tips for Shopping in Comiket (Summer Comi)

At Comiket, Japan's largest Doujinshi event and one of the most iconic Tokyo Anime Manga Events, a vast selection of Doujinshi, Comiket collaboration merchandise tied to popular anime and games, food, and apparel are all available for sale.

  • Popular circles' Doujinshi are fiercely contested. Anime fans from across Japan flock to the event, so if there is something you want, preparation and planning are essential.
  • Once you decide to attend, start by checking the Comiket Web Catalog, which is typically released in early June. Use it to confirm the booth locations of the genres, circles, and artists you want to visit within the venue.
  • Booths belonging to well-known doujinshi circles are placed along the walls of the venue or near the shutter entrances.
  • Those hoping to get their hands on popular Doujinshi from well-known circles should check the catalog carefully, decide on booth priorities, and map out the route from the entrance as well as the most efficient path if visiting multiple booths. This preparation step is critically important. Early entry or morning entry is essentially a must.
  • Even with afternoon entry, Doujinshi from non-wall circles remain plentiful. Taking your time to browse at a leisurely pace is an enjoyable experience in itself.
  • While cashless payment is rapidly spreading, many circles still do not accept it, so bring plenty of Japanese yen in small denominations — large bills are considered bad manners and are best avoided.

Tips for International Visitors Visiting Comiket (Summer Comi)

Summer Comiket, held in the height of summer, is widely regarded as the most physically demanding of all Tokyo Anime Manga Events. Heatstroke cases occur every year, so precautions are absolutely necessary.

Unless you have specific items you absolutely must get or feel strongly about arriving in the morning, those who simply want to soak in the atmosphere are advised to opt for afternoon entry, which requires no queuing under the blazing sun.

  • Basic packing list: smartphone, folding chair, cash, portable battery charger, light snacks, clear file folder (for holding any distributed materials), sun-and-rain umbrella, IC transit card loaded with fare for the return trip
  • Heat protection: chilled drinks (at least one liter), sunscreen, a large hat that covers down to the neck, cooling sheets, sweat-wiping sheets, a towel, a parasol with high heat-blocking properties, salt-replenishing candy or drinks

Convenience stores near the nearest station to the venue get extremely crowded. Make sure to purchase everything you need — heat protection supplies, snacks, and so on — before you reach the station.

Cosplay Participation Guide for Visitors

At Comiket, anyone wishing to cosplay must use the designated changing rooms. Access to the changing rooms is granted either by purchasing a changing room priority entry ticket in advance, or by buying a "Cosplay Registration Pass" at the venue on the day.

As this is a major Tokyo Anime Manga Event, there are many detailed rules in place to prevent confusion. Be sure to check the cosplay support page on the official website before attending.

For example, at Comiket, cosplay is only permitted in designated areas. Make sure to remain within those specified areas at all times.

Whether you are taking photos or being photographed, permission is required in both cases. Additionally, as the changing rooms are used by a large number of people, please be considerate of those around you and observe proper etiquette when using the facilities.

Kanda Myojin Summer Cooling Festival

Source: Official website

In August, a traditional summer cooling festival is also held at Kanda Myojin Shrine, located in the Akihabara area.

Kanda Myojin is a shrine with a long history, and is also beloved as the guardian shrine of Akihabara, the sacred ground of pop culture.

The summer cooling festival held every August at this storied shrine is an event where visitors can experience a classic Japanese summer festival. In the evenings, traditional summer dancing — Bon Odori — takes place, and many food stalls are set up throughout the grounds.

The festival also collaborates with Akihabara's Electric Town, home to countless anime shops, and every year features Bon Odori danced to anime songs, along with various anime-related events.

Bon Odori features simple choreography and is a dance anyone can join in on. Feel free to take part and enjoy this traditional event with a distinctly Akihabara flair.

Tips for Shopping at Tokyo Game Show

Tokyo Game Show features a large number of merchandise booths run by gaming companies, as well as sales of official TGS event merchandise.

  • To avoid missing out on sold-out items, it is generally recommended to visit the merchandise booths immediately after entering.
  • Collaboration merchandise between individual game companies and TGS, as well as event-exclusive items, tend to sell out especially fast. If you are after limited-edition goods from a popular game title, aim to purchase them before noon.
  • Merchandise booths are located away from the exhibition booth area, such as in separate buildings within Makuhari Messe. Moving between buildings in a crowded venue can take tens of minutes, so plan your time with plenty of margin.

Tips for International Visitors to Tokyo Game Show

  • In addition to the merchandise booths, a good strategy for enjoying the event is to visit popular exhibition booths early when crowds are smaller, then take your time browsing the various other exhibition booths afterward.
  • Basic packing list: smartphone, folding chair, cash, portable battery pack, drinks, light snacks, a clear folder (for collecting handouts), an umbrella suitable for both rain and sun, and a transit IC card loaded with your return fare.
  • Heat protection essentials: chilled drinks (at least one liter), sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat that covers the back of the neck, cooling sheets, sweat-wiping sheets, a towel, a high heat-blocking parasol, and salt-replenishing candy or drinks.
  • The late summer heat in September at Makuhari Messe can be extremely intense. There will be occasions when you need to wait outdoors both at entry and potentially during the event, so heat protection measures are essential. At Makuhari Messe, situated along the coast, be especially mindful of strong direct sunlight.

MEGAHOBBY EXPO

For fans of Japanese Anime and Manga characters, I recommend attending the MEGAHOBBY EXPO, a character figure exhibition event in Tokyo. You might encounter captivating figures of your favorite characters or discover new ones to admire.

My suggested way to enjoy this event is to compare figures from different eras while reflecting on the history of pop culture. This allows you to deeply understand the position of Anime and Manga in Japanese culture and observe how people's preferences have evolved over time – a true delight for any Otaku visiting Japan.

In addition to figure displays, the venue also features performances by voice actors and Anime production staff. If you're interested, be sure to visit the event corner.

Tips for Shopping in Sunshine Creation 2026 [Autumn]

The items available for sale at Sunshine Creation Autumn are essentially the same as those at the summer edition of this Tokyo Anime Manga Event.

  • Doujinshi based on anime and games popular among male fans make up a large portion of what is on offer. Doujinshi themed around military and railways are also worth keeping an eye out for.
  • Alongside the perennially popular Fate series, Doujinshi based on Blue Archive have been increasingly prominent in recent years. Fans of either series will definitely want to check what is available.
  • Unusually for a doujinshi sales event, shopping in cosplay is permitted here. This adds to the excitement of the experience and makes for a memorable visit, while also serving as a natural icebreaker for connecting with other attendees at the venue.

The merchandise available at Hakurei Shrine Autumn Festival is essentially the same as in spring.

  • Popular circles are often placed along the walls of the venue. If you are looking for CDs or other items from popular circles, make that your first stop after entering.
  • The booth of Gift, the manufacturer behind the hugely popular plush figure (Fumo) series, is located in the corporate booth area. A small number of event-exclusive plushies are sold on-site, but purchasing one is difficult. Advance reservation is strongly recommended.

Tips for Shopping in Interesting Doujinshi Bazaar

At Interesting Doujinshi Bazaar, the Doujinshi on sale are not based on anime or manga. Instead, this Tokyo Anime Manga Event focuses on Doujinshi covering a wide range of cultural themes such as food, travel, architecture, railways, and lifestyle.

  • The majority of Doujinshi are written in Japanese, though many are also illustration or photo-heavy, making them accessible regardless of language ability.
  • Most books come with a sample that allows you to preview the contents before purchasing.
  • The selection features many niche and one-of-a-kind titles, such as a book entirely dedicated to fountain pens under 5,000 yen, or a personal log of someone eating their way through every mapo tofu dish they could find.
  • Among the most interesting and useful finds personally encountered was a Doujinshi in which the author actually ate every single breakfast option available at Haneda Airport and reviewed them all.
  • Unlike commercially published books, self-published Doujinshi can often only be purchased on the spot at events like this. If something catches your eye, it is well worth going ahead and buying it.

Notable Anime/Manga Events in Tokyo in December 2026

December is filled with many events such as Christmas and New Year's celebrations, but Tokyo also hosts various Anime/Manga Events during this time. In late December, Jump Festa, which I particularly recommend, may be held, so be sure to check for the latest information.

Jump Festa

Jump Festa

Every year around December, Jump Festa is held in Tokyo. This event features content that will fully satisfy Shonen Jump fans, making it worth planning your trip to Japan around these dates. Shonen Jump is a weekly magazine that has produced many hit series such as "ONE PIECE" and "Dragon Ball."

At Jump Festa, you can enjoy original Manga artwork exhibitions, stage shows, and purchase limited-edition merchandise. What I'm particularly excited about at this Tokyo Anime event are the stage performances by Anime voice actors and theater performers. It's guaranteed to be an amazing experience with fans gathering from around the world.

Since the location and time of stages differ for each series, please check the show schedule for your favorite works. This is a must-visit event for any Otaku visiting Japan in 2026!

Tips for Shopping at Jump Festa

At Jump Festa, merchandise from popular manga and anime series featured in Jump is available, along with event-exclusive items and event-early-release items.

  • Event-exclusive merchandise sells out as a matter of course. If you want something specific, arrive early and head straight to the "JF Official Shop."
  • Last year's JF-exclusive items included a ONE PIECE towel, a SAKAMOTO DAYS T-shirt, a Gintama keychain, and more.
  • ONE PIECE is consistently one of the most fiercely contested series every year. Stock levels vary annually, but when the author visited the shop around noon on a previous occasion, no exclusive items remained at all.
  • Exclusive and early-release items can also be purchased through the publisher's official website and merchandise maker EC sites. If an item sells out on-site, the author recommends checking those websites on the spot and purchasing immediately.
  • For shopping beyond the exclusive items, the afternoon still offers plenty to enjoy.

Comiket (Winter Comiket)

The highly popular Manga event Comic Market is also held in winter. "Fuyu Comi" is planned every December, so keep checking for information about the 107th event.

Comic Market, a representative event of Japanese pop culture, attracts many participants from both Japan and overseas. The masterpieces displayed by creators are mostly special works that can only be seen in Japan. You can also purchase works you like on the spot.

Also, pay attention to the meticulously crafted costumes of cosplayers specifically prepared for this event. Since Tokyo's summer can be extremely hot with temperatures exceeding 30°C, it might be wise to target this winter event for your trip to Japan.

Tips for Shopping in Comiket (Winter Comiket)

The items available for sale at Winter Comiket are essentially the same as those at Summer Comiket.

  • Early entry or morning entry is essential for anyone hoping to get Doujinshi from well-known circles. Queues of two hours or more are entirely normal at popular Wall Circles located along the perimeter of the venue.
  • If you want to avoid long lines and sold-out items, thorough advance planning is critically important — check the catalog beforehand and confirm booth locations and routes.
  • Following doujinshi circle accounts on X (formerly Twitter) allows you to get real-time updates on queue lengths and sold-out status during the event.
  • Even with afternoon entry, there are still plenty of high-quality Doujinshi to be found. Browse through sample books and hunt for hidden gems at your own pace.
  • Doujinshi booths tend to pack up earlier than other areas (around 3:00 PM), so it is recommended to visit doujinshi booths first, then move on to corporate booth merchandise (excluding event-limited items).
  • Many circles still do not accept cashless payment, so from both a practical and etiquette standpoint, bring plenty of cash in small coins or 1,000-yen notes.

Tips for International Visitors Visiting Comiket (Winter Comiket)

  • The basics are largely the same as summer. While not as grueling as the summer heat, Tokyo Big Sight sits by the waterfront and is exposed to cold sea winds, making the chill quite intense. In personal experience, the cold works its way up from the ground as well. Come fully prepared for the cold.
  • Basic packing list: drinks, smartphone, folding chair, cash, portable battery charger, light snacks, clear file folder (for holding any distributed materials), sun-and-rain umbrella, IC transit card loaded with fare for the return trip
  • Cold weather and health protection: thick winter clothing, layered outfits that are easy to put on and take off (for fine-tuning body temperature), scarf and gloves, heat packs, thick socks and other items to keep your feet warm, throat lozenges, face mask
  • December is flu and cold season in Japan, and the crowded nature of this Tokyo Anime Manga Event makes health precautions essential. It is recommended to bring a face mask, alcohol spray, and fever-reducing medication in case of emergency.

Cosplay Participation Guide for Visitors

The basics, including how to use the changing rooms, are the same as summer. Be sure to thoroughly check the official website for all rules and etiquette guidelines.

One important note specific to winter: if you plan to wear a revealing cosplay costume, thick and easy-to-remove outerwear is an absolute must. The average temperature in Odaiba in winter ranges from around 6°C to 10°C.

Outdoors it can be bitterly cold, while indoors the combination of heating and body heat from the crowd can make things surprisingly warm. Be prepared to handle these significant temperature swings throughout the day.

Frequently Asked Questions About Anime Manga Events in Japan

What is the biggest anime event in Japan?

AnimeJapan is the largest anime event in Japan. Held annually in late March at Tokyo Big Sight, it attracts over 100,000 visitors each year and features booths from major studios, exclusive merchandise, stage events, and world premieres.

For doujinshi (self-published) culture, Comiket (Comic Market) rivals it in scale, drawing up to 200,000+ attendees across three days each summer and winter.

What anime conventions are in Japan in 2026?

The major anime and manga events in Japan in 2026 include:

  • AnimeJapan 2026 – Late March, Tokyo Big Sight
  • Summer Comiket – Mid-August, Tokyo Big Sight
  • Winter Comiket – Late December, Tokyo Big Sight
  • Tokyo Game Show 2026 – September, Makuhari Messe (includes major anime tie-ins)
  • Jump Festa 2027 – December 2026, Makuhari Messe

Dates can shift slightly year to year, so always verify the official websites closer to your travel dates.

How to get tickets for AnimeJapan 2026?

Tickets for AnimeJapan 2026 are sold online through official ticketing platforms such as e+ and Lawson Ticket. General admission tickets typically go on sale several weeks before the event. Here's what foreign visitors should know:

  • A Japanese phone number or address is not always required, but some platforms may need a Japanese account — using a proxy ticket service or asking a local contact can help if you run into issues.
  • e-tickets (QR code) are standard and can be used directly from your smartphone.
  • Some popular stage events and premium programs require separate balloting (lottery) in addition to the general admission ticket, so check the official AnimeJapan website early.

Buying in advance is strongly recommended, as tickets often sell out or become limited at the door.

Is AnimeJapan free?

No, AnimeJapan is not free. A general admission ticket is required for entry. Prices typically fall around ¥2,000–¥2,500 per day. However, children under a certain age (usually elementary school age and below) may enter free when accompanied by a paying adult — check the official site for the exact policy for 2026.

Note that while entry to the main exhibition floor requires a ticket, some related outdoor or public-facing events held around the venue may be free to view.

What is Comiket and when is it held?

Comiket (Comic Market) is the world's largest self-publishing (doujinshi) fair, held twice a year at Tokyo Big Sight in Odaiba:

  • Summer Comiket – typically mid-August (3 days)
  • Winter Comiket – typically late December (3 days)

Unlike AnimeJapan, Comiket is not an industry expo — it's a creator-driven marketplace where thousands of independent artists and circles sell original comics, fan art, novels, music, and goods. It's a deeply grassroots, community-oriented event and a unique window into Japanese fan culture.

Entry requires a Comiket catalog (sold on-site or in advance at convenience stores) or a day ticket. Be prepared for very large crowds, long queues, summer heat or winter cold, and a cash-only environment at most booths.

Can foreigners attend anime events in Japan?

Yes, absolutely. All major anime events in Japan — including AnimeJapan, Comiket, Jump Festa, and Tokyo Game Show — are open to international visitors. No special registration or proof of residency is required beyond a valid ticket.

A few practical tips for foreign attendees:

  • Signage and programs are primarily in Japanese, though AnimeJapan has been expanding English support in recent years.
  • Cash is essential at events like Comiket, where most independent sellers do not accept cards.
  • Bring an IC transit card (Suica/Pasmo) for easy access via train to venues like Tokyo Big Sight (Yurikamome Line or Rinkai Line).
  • Arriving early is strongly advised — queues for popular booths and stage events can begin hours before opening.

Where can I see anime cosplay in Tokyo?

The best places to see anime cosplay in Tokyo are Tokyo Big Sight during Comiket, AnimeJapan, Akihabara, and Ikebukuro. Here's what each offers:

  • Tokyo Big Sight (Comiket) – The largest cosplay gathering in Japan, with thousands of cosplayers on the outdoor plaza on designated cosplay days.
  • AnimeJapan – Cosplay is welcome and encouraged throughout the event.
  • Akihabara – The heart of anime and manga culture in Tokyo, with themed cafes, events, and cosplay-friendly shops throughout the district.
  • Ikebukuro (Sunshine City area) – Frequently hosts cosplay events, especially popular among fans of otome games and BL culture.
  • Harajuku (Takeshita Street) – Historically a street fashion and cosplay hub, though the cosplay crowd has largely shifted toward event venues in recent years.

If cosplay is your main goal, timing your visit to coincide with Comiket or AnimeJapan will give you the most concentrated and vibrant experience.

What is the best month to visit Tokyo for anime fans?

March and August are the best months to visit Tokyo for anime fans. March hosts AnimeJapan, the premier industry anime event of the year, and coincides with cherry blossom season — making it an ideal all-around trip. August hosts Summer Comiket, though the heat and humidity in Tokyo can be intense, so prepare accordingly.

Other worthwhile times include December for Winter Comiket and Jump Festa, and September for Tokyo Game Show. If you prefer a more relaxed visit to anime landmarks — Akihabara, the Ghibli Museum, or anime-themed cafes — Tokyo is enjoyable for anime fans year-round.
