At the same time, food tours led by knowledgeable local guides who know Ueno inside and out have been gaining popularity, as they take visitors through Ueno's maze of izakaya establishments.
In fact, Magical Trip's tour, which ranked #1 among all tours on Tripadvisor, has been receiving numerous applications.

If you want to experience truly local-favorite izakayas in Ueno, one of Tokyo's premier drinking districts, join the "All-You-Can-Drink Bar Hopping Tour in Ueno." "Wind Chime Corridor" Filled with Traditional Japanese Wind Chimes

During the festival period, a "Wind Chime Corridor" with 2,000 wind chimes is installed on the Shinobazu Pond lotus viewing deck in Ueno Park. Wind chimes are items familiar as a symbol of Japanese summer. They are hung under eaves to enjoy the sounds created by the wind.
The cool, refreshing sound of wind chimes brings peace to your heart. You can forget the hustle and bustle of the city and spend a tranquil moment here. The wind chimes shimmer in the sunlight during the day and transform into a magical scene when illuminated at night.
This is a photogenic spot, so it's recommended for those who want to take Instagram-worthy pictures.
Traditional Japanese Summer "Ennichi" Festival Enjoyable for Both Children and Adults

One of the main highlights of the Ueno Event August 2026 will be the festival where you can experience traditional Japanese atmosphere. Around Shinobazu Pond, you'll find stalls offering classic Japanese games such as ring toss, goldfish scooping, yo-yo fishing, and shooting galleries. There's also a rich variety of food stalls serving shaved ice, yakisoba, beer, and other festival delicacies.
During the day, you can enjoy the lush green scenery around Shinobazu Pond. At night, paper lanterns and lights create a magical landscape. Walking around in a yukata (summer kimono) will enhance your Japanese festival experience. Both children and adults will find their hearts dancing with joy, creating special summer memories.
"Children's Fireworks Festival" for Family Fun

The grand finale of the Ueno Event August 2026 will be the Children's Fireworks Festival held at Kan'eiji Temple Bentendo. The first 100-150 participants can join for free and enjoy handheld fireworks in a safety-conscious environment. You can also watch elaborate fireworks displays created by professional pyrotechnicians.
This event began from a desire to change the reality that children nowadays have fewer opportunities to casually enjoy fireworks like in the past. On the day of the event, members of the Ueno Fire Department will provide instructions on handling fire safely. Why not experience the delicate and beautiful Japanese fireworks up close?
The Ueno Summer Festival is also held in July. We've compiled events you can enjoy at the end of July here, so feel free to use this as a reference when planning your itinerary.

Special Ueno Events to Enjoy in August 2026
Super Highball Festival

If you're looking to enjoy drinks outdoors in summer, why not head to the "Super Highball Festival"? This is an event where you can taste a variety of spirits — whisky, gin, tequila, rum, vodka, and more — mixed with soda water.
When you purchase your drink, you receive ice and sparkling water, allowing you to mix it to your own preference. Since sparkling water is available for free refills, even those who aren't big drinkers can enjoy their drink at whatever strength they like! Another appealing aspect of this Ueno event August 2026 is the wide lineup of sweet liqueurs, including dessert-inspired and citrus-based varieties.
The venue also offers a great selection of food that pairs perfectly with drinks, including grilled tuna skewers, beef steak, and meat-wrapped rice balls. Between drinks, I personally enjoyed a shaved ice topped with plenty of strawberries.
This event is also recommended for those who want to sample rare Japanese whiskies.
- Dates: Late August 2026
- Venue: Ueno Park
- Access: 2-minute walk from Ueno Station (JR Lines)
- Admission: Paid (please check the official website for details)

Taiwan Faasai

"Taiwan Faasai" is the largest Taiwan festival in Tokyo. This festival, which offers a glimpse into Taiwanese food culture and traditional performing arts, also carries the meaning of praying for people's happiness.
The biggest highlight is, without a doubt, the authentic Taiwanese cuisine. The aroma of spices fills the venue, whetting your appetite.
My personal recommendations are the lu rou fan (braised pork belly served over rice in a sweet and savory sauce) from a renowned restaurant in Yokohama Chinatown, and da ji pai (Taiwanese-style big fried chicken), a staple of authentic night markets. Both pair wonderfully with a cold Taiwanese beer!
On this day, when Ueno Park is transformed into a Taiwanese wonderland, you can enjoy the feeling of traveling through two cities — Japan and Taiwan — at the same time. This is also a must-visit Ueno event August 2026 for anyone who wants to experience authentic Taiwanese food.
- Dates: Late August 2026
- Venue: Ueno Park, Fountain Plaza
- Access: 2-minute walk from Ueno Station (JR Lines)
- Admission: Free

Uenode. Panda Beer Festa

"Uenode. Panda Beer Festa" is an event held in the nature-rich Ueno Park where you can enjoy multinational cuisine and craft beer. Many local shopping street vendors participate, making it a perfect opportunity to fully experience the unique charm of Ueno.
In addition to beer-friendly foods like steak skewers, karaage fried chicken, and takoyaki, you'll also find desserts such as shaved ice and castella cake. With a spacious dining area, this event is also great for those who want to sit back, relax, and take their time savoring their food and drinks.
The stage features live performances by artists and DJs, as well as comedy acts. When I visited at night last year, the fountain plaza was beautifully illuminated, offering a completely different atmosphere from the daytime.
If you love lively and vibrant events, this is definitely one Ueno event August 2026 you won't want to miss!

Many Summer Events Are Also Held in the Ueno Area in August
Hibiya Park Bon Odori Festival

The Hibiya Park Bon Odori Festival is one of Tokyo's largest bon dance events held in late August. About 40,000 people participate each year, forming a circle around the large fountain in Hibiya Park and dancing gracefully to the music. Students, company employees, foreign tourists, and various other people freely join the circle and step to the rhythm of the taiko drums.
Bon dancing is accessible even for first-timers. You can easily get into the rhythm by simply imitating the professional dancers in yukata, slowly moving your hands and feet.
Next to the large fountain is a spacious grassy area. After working up a sweat with bon dancing, you might want to enjoy festival foods like yakisoba and shaved ice while resting on the grass.

Participants wearing colorful Japanese-patterned yukata dance in circles to the rhythm of Bon dance music and taiko drums. The sight of multiple circles of dancers is truly impressive.
The venue features food stalls offering everything from cotton candy, yakisoba, and meat buns to alcoholic beverages like beer and wine—enjoyable for both children and adults. There are also shooting galleries and game corners for children. A spacious stroller parking area is available, making it accessible for families with small children.

When visiting Ueno in August 2026, enjoy bar hopping with locals in the evening breeze

This tour allows you to visit izakayas (Japanese pubs) and ramen shops popular with locals, enjoying drinks while interacting with Japanese people. Visit a total of three establishments and experience Ueno's vibrant food stall scenery and izakaya cuisine.
At the first two establishments, you can experience the "nomihoudai" (all-you-can-drink) system, where you can order as many alcoholic beverages as you like within a time limit. Enjoy conversations while savoring the perfect pairing of drinks and food.
My recommendation is the third establishment. After enjoying the izakayas, you can experience the unique Japanese culture of finishing the night at a ramen shop or a standing bar for a light drink. Reviews include comments like "All three izakayas had different atmospheres and cuisine, and everything was delicious."
<Information>
- Meeting point: In front of the Ueno Object near the Ueno Station Hirokoji Exit
- Tour area: Ueno food stall alleys (2 bars), standing bars or ramen shops
- Start time: 18:00
You might think of Ueno nights as being all about "bar hopping," but the author actually recommends enjoying the night views as well. If you want to experience the city beautifully illuminated at night in Ueno, be sure to check out the following guide!

Special Art Experiences to Enjoy in Ueno, the City of Art, for the Ueno Event August 2026
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum 100th Anniversary Exhibition: "The British Museum's Japanese Art Collection: A Profusion of Blooms — Edo Paintings Across the Sea"

As part of its 100th anniversary celebrations, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum will be hosting a special Ueno Event August 2026 that is truly not to be missed. The exhibition showcases the Japanese art collection held by the British Museum, one of the largest museums in the world.
From a collection of approximately 40,000 works — including woodblock prints by ukiyo-e artists such as Hokusai and Hiroshige, as well as folding screens from the Edo period (1603–1867) — around 200 carefully selected pieces will be on display.
What I find most fascinating is the reunion of three sets of fusuma (sliding door) paintings that transcend time. It has recently come to light that a set of fusuma paintings privately owned in Aomori Prefecture and a set held at the British Museum were originally part of the same continuous work.
Together with another set housed at the Seattle Art Museum in the United States, all three sets will be reunited for the first time in 150 years.
Whether you have a deep interest in Japanese art or simply want to experience the Edo-period paintings that have captivated the world, don't miss this incredible opportunity!
Information:
- Dates: July 25 – October 18, 2026
- Venue: Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (within Ueno Park)
- Access: 7–10 minutes on foot from Ueno Station (multiple lines)
- Admission: TBD (details to be announced)

"Rembrandt the Printmaker: Challenge, Inheritance, and Impact"

The exhibition I'm personally looking forward to most this summer is this special show dedicated to Rembrandt, the defining Dutch printmaker of the 17th century.
Featuring approximately 100 prints drawn from the collections of the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam and the National Museum of Western Art, as well as works owned by private collectors and university libraries, this is a truly remarkable gathering of masterpieces.
One of the great appeals of this exhibition is the chance to immerse yourself in the monochromatic world unique to printmaking. Rembrandt, who developed techniques that make light and shadow appear as though physically cast onto the surface, earned the epithets "Painter of Light" and "Magician of Light and Shadow." Come and savor the works that revolutionized etching techniques and left a profound influence on generations of artists who followed.
This exhibition is recommended for anyone who wants to quietly enjoy art in a calm atmosphere, stepping away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a little while.
Information:
- Dates: July 7 – September 23, 2026
- Venue: National Museum of Western Art (within Ueno Park)
- Access: 2 minutes on foot from Ueno Station (JR lines)
- Admission: TBD (details to be announced)

The Ueno Royal Museum NAYUTA Exhibition

The "NAYUTA Exhibition" is a group show held in the gallery space of The Ueno Royal Museum. Works by instructors and students from the art school located within the museum will be on display, spanning a wide variety of styles and genres.
Because no overarching theme has been set, one of the highlights of this event is the opportunity to enjoy a diverse range of works, each reflecting the individual voice of its creator. Abstract paintings, landscapes, watercolors, and oil paintings all come together in one space, creating an atmosphere rather like an art toy box.
While it may not be a large-scale exhibition, it offers a wonderfully accessible way to engage with art! The show can be explored in a relatively short amount of time, making it a perfect addition to a visit to other events or facilities within Ueno Park. Best of all, admission is free, so feel free to drop by without any hesitation!
Information:
- Dates: August 28 – September 1, 2026
- Venue: The Ueno Royal Museum (within Ueno Park)
- Access: 3 minutes on foot from Ueno Station (JR lines)
- Admission: Free

The launch site and the main venue, Arakawa-Sunamachi Waterfront Park, are only 150m apart. The beautiful array of fireworks filling your entire view will bring you great excitement. My recommendation is to view the fireworks from a yakatabune (houseboat) or cruise. Why not spend a summer night experiencing the downtown atmosphere of Japan?

This fireworks festival has been handled by "Kagiya," a fireworks company with over 360 years of history, since the first event. You will be moved by the craftsmen's high technical skills and the colorful fireworks presentation.
