Among the Hiroshima events in June 2026, the Toukasan Yukata Festival stands out as one of the largest in scale. It is a beloved event among locals that signals the arrival of summer in Hiroshima.

The Toukasan Yukata Festival is counted among Hiroshima's three great festivals, alongside the Ebisu Kou and the Sumiyoshi Shrine Festival. As one of the most iconic summer festivals in Hiroshima, it draws a crowd of over 450,000 people every year.

While large numbers of people attend, the festival area is so expansive that even I — someone accustomed to the crowds of Tokyo — can enjoy it at a relaxed pace without being jostled. It's one of my favorite festivals for that reason.

When it comes to Japanese summer festivals, Yukata (traditional Japanese summer clothing) is a must. The Toukasan Yukata Festival is the earliest festival in Hiroshima where you can enjoy wearing Yukata. (Based on the author's research.)

As the Toukasan Yukata Festival approaches, the people of Hiroshima pull their Yukata out from the back of their closets and get ready for the summer festival season.

History of the Toukasan Grand Festival

The Toukasan Yukata Festival has a history of over 400 years and is held at Enryu-ji Temple and its surrounding area.

Near Enryu-ji Temple stands Hiroshima Castle. "Toka-Daimyojin," the leader of the deities enshrined at Enryu-ji Temple, is said to be responsible for the peace and prosperity of Hiroshima Castle and the townspeople living in its shadow.

The Toukasan Yukata Festival is held on a day considered special for receiving the divine power of Toka-Daimyojin. It is said to have been first celebrated in 1620.

The Toukasan Yukata Festival is a cherished event that has been passed down for over 400 years, dating back to the era when castles played a central role in Japanese life.

How to Enjoy the Toukasan Grand Festival — Tips from a Local!

Wear a Yukata and Enjoy the Quintessentially Japanese Festival Atmosphere on the Temple Grounds

One of the most appealing aspects of the Toukasan Yukata Festival is the chance to enjoy the kind of Japanese festival atmosphere you'd see in anime or manga. Many visitors dress in Yukata, enjoy mini-games and festival food at the stalls, and pay their respects at Enryu-ji Temple, which sits at the heart of the festival area.

Nearby shops offer Yukata rental and dressing assistance. I had my Yukata put on for me, and it was done in less than 20 minutes. Please feel free to give Yukata a try without any hesitation!

Various traditional rituals take place during the Toukasan Yukata Festival. For example, at the start of the festival, the doors to the place where Toka-Daimyojin is enshrined are opened, and they are closed again at the end of the festival.

This is not a simple opening and closing of doors — it is a traditional religious ceremony performed to receive the divine power of Toka-Daimyojin.

There is also the ritual burning of ofuda (talismans) and omamori (amulets). This is a ceremony in which people return their ofuda and omamori to the deity with gratitude, honoring the protection these items have provided.

The Toukasan Yukata Festival is also a wonderful place to connect with Japanese faith and spirituality. Amid the lively voices filling the festival grounds, the area where the sacred rituals take place carries a solemn and holy atmosphere. Please take the opportunity to experience the spiritual ambiance of Japanese belief firsthand.

Be Overwhelmed by the Powerful Performance Events

While you're at the Toukasan Yukata Festival, make sure to experience the traditional performances as well.

At Enryu-ji Temple, Wadaiko (Japanese taiko drumming) performances are held in honor of Toka-Daimyojin.

When you stand close to a Wadaiko performance, you can feel the vibrations resonating throughout your entire body. Beyond the sound itself, the dynamic and powerful way the performers swing their drumsticks is equally captivating.

The sheer power of Wadaiko engages all three senses — sight, sound, and touch — which is truly one of its greatest qualities.

I hadn't originally planned to go watch the Wadaiko performance, but when the sound reached me from a distance, I found myself naturally drawn toward it.

The sound of Wadaiko is captivating even from far away — so you can only imagine how moving it is to hear it up close.

Miyoshi Cormorant Fishing

In Miyoshi City, you can witness a traditional fishing method known as Cormorant Fishing. The technique involves tethered cormorants diving into the water to catch fish and bring them back. This method is even described in Japan's oldest history book, compiled in 712 AD.

In Miyoshi City, the cormorants and the boat carrying the cormorant handlers travel alongside a sightseeing boat as the fishing takes place. This setup allows visitors to clearly see the expressions on the cormorants' faces and the skilled handiwork of the handlers — which is one of the most captivating aspects of the experience.

For me personally, being able to witness a traditional fishing method I had only ever seen in history textbooks was a truly memorable and joyful experience.

Mibu no Hana Taue

Mibu no Hana Taue (ritual of transplanting rice in Mibu) is an event held to pray for a peaceful and bountiful rice harvest, and to bring joy to the work of rice planting.

The centerpiece of Mibu no Hana Taue is the rice transplanting itself. A performance group plays percussion instruments and sings songs to liven up the planting, while a group of people transplants the rice in steady rhythm.

Watching people perform agricultural work by hand in traditional clothing to the sound of traditional music gives you the feeling of stepping back in time.

I once helped with rice planting at my grandparents' home. I still remember how exhausting it was — a repetitive task that required staying hunched over for long stretches of time.

Watching Mibu no Hana Taue, I was filled with deep gratitude, reflecting on how Japan's rice culture has been preserved thanks to generations of people who encouraged and supported one another through this demanding labor.

Schedule: First Sunday of June every year
Access: Free shuttle bus available from Kitahiroshima Town Hall and Michi no Eki Mairoado (parking area)

Natsukoshi Matsuri – The Great Purification of Minazuki

Natsukoshi Matsuri – The Great Purification of Minazuki
Source:Official website

In Japan, it is believed that people accumulate many sins and bad energies simply through the course of living. Natsukoshi Matsuri is an event held at the start of the second half of the year to cleanse the body of the sins and bad energies that have built up over the first half.

A large cauldron is set up within the shrine grounds, water is boiled in it, and a purification ritual is performed in which visitors' bodies are cleansed with the purified hot water. At the end of the festival, participants are also able to drink the purified water.

I visited Natsukoshi Matsuri last year myself. When my body was being cleansed with the hot water, I suddenly remembered a goal I had set on January 1st — to run every day — which I had given up on after about a month. That same evening, I restarted my running routine.

Natsukoshi Matsuri is a wonderful celebration where you feel as though the gods are giving you a chance to start fresh with a renewed spirit. We hope you'll use it as an opportunity to recharge and gear up for the second half of the year.

Beautiful Nature Events to Enjoy in Hiroshima in June 2026

Sankei-en Garden: Best Season for Hydrangeas & Irises

Sankei-en Garden: Best Season for Hydrangeas & Irises

Hiroshima is a place blessed with breathtaking scenery represented by forests, satoyama (rural landscapes), and the sea. Sankei-en is a Japanese garden designed with these three themes as its motif, and its charm lies in the way it captures the essence of Hiroshima's natural beauty in a compact, enjoyable space.

At Sankei-en, you can enjoy flowers that change with the four seasons throughout the year. The flowers that reach their peak in June are hydrangeas and irises. Against the lush green leaves thickening in anticipation of summer, the blue and purple blooms stand out beautifully as vivid accents.

June in Japan is a rainy season, but Sankei-en pairs wonderfully with the rain, so there is nothing to worry about. The day I visited, it was raining.

The ripples the rain made on the garden pond, combined with the surrounding Japanese atmosphere, created a poetic beauty that made me feel as though I could gaze at it forever. And above all, the moment when the rain cleared and the blue and purple flowers, wet with rain, glistened as they reflected the sunlight — that is a sight I will never forget.

Schedule: Hydrangeas: early June to mid-July / Irises: early June to late June
Access: Approximately 5 minutes from Hiroshima Airport Terminal Building
Admission: Adults ¥350 / Elementary and middle school students ¥180

Mt. Gokurakuji Photo Contest

At Mt. Gokurakuji, water lilies bloom in full glory across the pond every year. The leaves covering more than half the surface of the pond, with pink flowers blooming here and there, create an utterly fantastical scene. No matter how many times I visit, it feels so dreamlike that I wonder if I am in a dream — it is the same landscape as the picture books I loved so dearly as a child.

Mt. Gokurakuji is especially popular among photographers. If you want to capture stunning photos that can only be taken at a travel destination, this is a must-visit spot.

Additionally, a photo contest themed around the water lilies of Mt. Gokurakuji is also held, so please take some wonderful photos and enter your submission. I plan to make my third attempt this year — this time, I am aiming for a prize!

Access: Approximately 30 minutes by car from JR Sanyo Main Line "Hatsukaichi Station"

Jinguji Temple: Hydrangea Festival

Jinguji Temple: Hydrangea Festival
Source:FUN!FAN!FUCHU!

Jinguji is a temple known as a celebrated spot for hydrangeas. Throughout the grounds, 300 plants of 80 different varieties of hydrangeas bloom in full splendor.

It feels almost impossible to walk through without hydrangeas filling your line of sight — no matter where you look, beautiful hydrangea blooms are on display. Furthermore, the characteristics of hydrangeas vary greatly by variety, from color and petal shape to the density of the blooms.

I personally had a wonderful time strolling through the grounds in search of my personal favorite.

At Jinguji, a Hydrangea Festival is also held each year to coincide with the peak blooming season. With food trucks and bazaars, there is no shortage of fun activities to enjoy. Set against the fresh air and beautiful scenery of this nature-rich location, the lively festival atmosphere makes for a truly memorable experience.

<Information>
Schedule: Typically early to late June (in 2025: June 8 to June 30)
Access: Approximately 6 minutes on foot from in front of Kurio Agricultural Cooperative

Joge Ayame Festival

Joge Ayame Festival
Source:FUN!FAN!FUCHU!

At Yano Onsen Park Shiki no Sato, the JOGE AYAME FESTIVAL is held every June. Approximately 70,000 irises and sweet flags of around 200 varieties bloom in full magnificence.

The iris flower blooms at the very top of its straight, upward-reaching stem. There is a coolness and stylishness within its delicateness — it is my absolute favorite flower. I truly hope that everyone will be moved by the sight of irises blooming as far as the eye can see.

During the festival period, there are plenty of events to enjoy, including Japanese taiko drum performances, local vegetable stalls, and festival food vendors.

The fact that local children give musical performances and display posters they have drawn themselves makes this a deeply community-rooted event, which is one of the reasons I highly recommend it. Please take the opportunity to experience the sense of connection within a Japanese local community.

Schedule: Typically early to mid-June
Access: 10 minutes by taxi from JR Joge Station
Admission: Adults ¥400 / Children ¥200 (2025)

Yuki Onsen Firefly Festival

The Yuki Onsen Firefly Festival is a celebration where events are held at various locations throughout Yuki Town to coincide with firefly season, turning the entire town into a festive atmosphere. For example, there is a pizza garden and screenings of firefly movies, among other activities.

However, the greatest highlight is undoubtedly the fireflies dancing above the crystal-clear river. In recent years, the number of places around the world where fireflies can be seen has been declining, but in Yuki Town, fireflies still light up the dark night sky in brilliant fashion.

As someone who usually lives in the city, I found the scenery that can only be seen in a nature-rich place deeply calming. For those who lead busy lives, I wholeheartedly recommend taking a moment to gaze at the fireflies and let your mind find peace.

Schedule: 2026 dates to be determined (typically late June to early July)
Access: Directly in front of Yuki Lodge (to Yuki Koryu Taiken Center)
Admission: Varies by event venue — please check the official website for details
