These places are especially wonderful to visit during New Year celebrations. Since May 2026 is coming soon, I want to share my favorite spots in Shibuya that are perfect to visit in May. I'll also include the newest information for 2026.

I also want to tell you about some great Tokyo tours by Magical Trip. If you're interested in visiting Shibuya, you should try their "Shibuya Bar Hopping Night Tour in Tokyo." Special Experiences Exclusive to Shibuya in May

Grand Spring Festival at Meiji Shrine

The Grand Spring Festival at Meiji Shrine is a festival where various Japanese traditional performing arts called "Noh" and "Kyogen" are showcased. Special stages are set up around the shrine buildings, and anyone can enjoy the performances for free.

My recommendation is the Kagura (songs and dances dedicated to the gods) called "Urayasu no Mai." This dance is performed to pray for world peace, and you can experience a sacred atmosphere. There are also folk performances and archery competitions, making it full of highlights.

During the Grand Spring Festival, the flowers in Meiji Shrine bloom brilliantly, creating a vibrant atmosphere, so please enjoy observing the flowers as well. It's recommended for those who want to enjoy various traditional performing arts and nature. Just like the upcoming Shibuya Event May 2026, this festival promises to be a cultural highlight of Tokyo's spring season.

The event also sells popcorn and drinks to enhance your experience. It's perfect for those who want to spend a relaxing evening in Shibuya.

Throughout the grounds, food stalls and a handmade marché featuring works by independent artisans are set up, offering food and miscellaneous goods themed around goldfish. At the event, you can view script displays and production setting materials that can only be seen here, along with the sale of original merchandise — content that fans will absolutely love. Photo sessions are also popular with children, making it a wonderful opportunity to interact with the heroes themselves.

Shibuya Event May 2026 - Culinary Events

Thai Festival

Source: FASHION PRESS

Thai Festival Tokyo is a spring staple event that has been held since 2000. The event features nearly 100 booths where you can enjoy Thai food and shopping for miscellaneous goods. The fruit corner is especially popular, offering mango and mangosteen — rare finds even in Japan.

At the food corner, iconic Thai dishes such as Pad Thai and Tom Yum Kung are lined up, filling the air with the exotic aroma of spices.

On stage, concerts by Thai artists and Muay Thai demonstrations are performed, and the venue is filled with excitement and cheers in front of the thrilling performances.

The venue is also conveniently located close to Harajuku Station, and since the event runs into the evening, it's a great opportunity to enjoy the Thai atmosphere over a drink at night. It is an event where you can fully immerse yourself in Thai culture and cuisine without leaving Japan.

If you are planning your Shibuya Event May 2026 experience, this is one not to miss.

OKINAWA FES Milafete

Okinawa Fes Milafete is one of Tokyo's largest Okinawa events, held under the concept of "Two days where Yoyogi Park becomes entirely Okinawa."

The charm of the event lies in being able to stroll through the booths, enjoy food and drink, and shop for goods — all while being enveloped in music, just like a music festival. Around 40 artists participate, ranging from traditional music to DJ stages. Concerts are held on four separate stages, so you can freely wander between whichever stage you prefer.

A personal recommendation is the performance on the "Sanshin," a traditional stringed instrument similar to the Shamisen. Simply listening to the music is enough to feel a tropical island breeze.

When it comes to food, you can savor the unique culinary culture of Japan's southernmost region, with dishes such as Taco Rice and Soki Soba (Okinawa soba with pork). This is the perfect event for anyone who wants to get hyped up with music while soaking in a tropical mood.

The Cambodia Festival, which started in 2015, is Japan's largest event celebrating Cambodian culture.

The Cambodia Festival features approximately 70 vendors selling food, beer, and crafts. You can enjoy authentic Cambodian dishes like "Amok" and grilled beef skewers amid the lush nature of Yoyogi Park. When I visited, each booth had its own unique taste and flavor profile for the same dishes, so comparing different versions could be enjoyable.

The Cambodia Festival also includes stage programs featuring traditional Cambodian dance. It's a rare opportunity to experience Cambodian culture while in Japan, so those interested in Cambodian culture should definitely participate.

Tokyo's Most Exciting Festivals Occur in May!

In May, Tokyo hosts some of its largest annual cultural celebrations, including the Kanda Matsuri and Sanja Matsuri, which are among the city's most significant traditional events. Speaking of exciting events, visitors should note that Shibuya will also be hosting a special cultural showcase in May 2026, adding to the month's festivities.

The Kanda Matsuri, one of Japan's three major festivals, is famous for its magnificent portable shrines (mikoshi - platforms carried by many people to transport deities). The Sanja Matsuri is also a large-scale festival featuring approximately 100 mikoshi parading through the town.

If you're planning to visit Tokyo in May, we recommend staying in Shinjuku as your base to experience these vibrant festivals.

The experience feels like stepping back in time. The highlight occurs at Nihonbashi, where the mikoshi procession merges with the Tsukematsuri (auxiliary festival) parade featuring participants in special costumes.
