Sapporo is Known as One of Japan's Top Culinary Treasures

Sapporo is known as a city particularly abundant in "food" even within Japan.

Fresh ingredients gathered from all across Hokkaido are plentifully available, and the city is lined with establishments offering diverse cuisines.

Surrounded by the sea and dotted with mountains and ranches, Hokkaido is a region blessed with nature's bounty including seafood, meat, dairy products, and vegetables.

In Sapporo, the central city of this region, you can enjoy dishes that make use of these ingredients, earning high praise not only from locals but also from tourists.

Throughout the city, you'll find a wide range of dining establishments, from traditional eateries and markets to Michelin-starred restaurants.

Even compared to cities throughout Japan, Sapporo stands out for its culinary diversity and quality, attracting attention from both domestic and international visitors as a "culinary treasure."

5 Local Street Foods to Enjoy in Sapporo

In Sapporo, casually enjoyed local street food is one of the pleasures of travel.

At markets and food stalls, you'll find a diverse range of flavors, from dishes using fresh seafood to local fried foods, noodle dishes, and sweets.

From here, we'll introduce five popular street foods in Sapporo.

Seafood

As a local street food you can casually enjoy in Sapporo, seafood is absolutely essential.

Hokkaido is surrounded by the sea on three sides, and seafood raised in the cold climate has firm flesh with concentrated umami flavor.

Particularly popular is "Kaisen-don." This is a dish where fresh seafood landed that day, such as salmon, salmon roe, and scallops, are colorfully arranged on top of rice, and can be easily enjoyed at markets and food courts.

Sushi and sashimi are also popular, allowing you to savor simple flavors where the freshness of the ingredients stands out.

As a city abundant in seafood, one of Sapporo's attractions is that you can taste high-quality seafood not only at upscale establishments but also at casual shops frequented by locals.

Hokkaido Crab

Hokkaido Crab

Among the local street foods you can enjoy in Sapporo, Hokkaido crab is known as something particularly special.

Hokkaido is surrounded by cold seas, and crabs raised in rich plankton and clear seawater are characterized by tightly packed flesh with rich sweetness and umami.

Representative varieties include King crab, Snow crab, and Hair crab, each with different flavors and textures.

In Sapporo, you can casually taste these crabs at local izakayas and markets, and styles where you eat boiled flesh straight or enjoy grilling crab legs over charcoal are also popular.

Being able to enjoy crab casually, not just at luxurious restaurants, is one of Sapporo's attractive points.

Hokkaido Ramen

Hokkaido Ramen

One local street food you can't miss in Sapporo is Hokkaido Ramen.

Ramen is a noodle dish representing Japan, where wheat noodles are placed in hot soup and served with toppings.

Characteristics differ by region, and among them, Sapporo is known as the birthplace of "Miso Ramen."

Miso is a uniquely Japanese seasoning made by fermenting soybeans, characterized by a rich and flavorful taste.

In Hokkaido's cold climate, rich soups that warm the body are preferred, and hearty bowls topped with stir-fried vegetables, butter, corn, and other ingredients are popular.

There are many specialty shops throughout Sapporo, and there are also areas fun for eating around, such as "Ramen Yokocho," an alley lined with small ramen shops.

Hokkaido Ramen is a taste symbolizing Sapporo, loved by both tourists and locals.

Zangi

Zangi

If you want to experience Sapporo's local food culture, "Zangi," Hokkaido-style "Karaage (means 'Fried Chicken')," is worth noting.

Karaage is a widely popular fried chicken dish throughout Japan, and Zangi is characterized by thoroughly seasoning the meat before frying, resulting in a crispy exterior and juicy interior.

While seafood and ramen tend to be the stars among tourists, Zangi is an everyday presence for local people.

Rather than being a tourist specialty, it's a local food rooted in the daily life of locals, making it a dish where you can feel Sapporo's charm more deeply.

In Hokkaido, where it originated, there are also variations using not just chicken but also seafood like octopus and squid, as well as lamb.

It pairs well with alcohol, so it's also popular as an izakaya menu item.

Melon

Melon

Hokkaido-produced Melon is also one of the gourmet foods you should eat in Sapporo.

Hokkaido has large temperature differences between day and night, creating an environment where fruits with high sugar content and rich aroma grow easily.

Melon is particularly popular, and during the peak season from summer to early autumn, you'll see them frequently at markets and tourist spots.

At markets, they are sometimes sold pre-cut. While it's difficult to eat a whole fruit during travel, being able to taste it on the spot is delightful.

The juicy and rich sweetness of melon is perfect even after enjoying hearty flavors like seafood and ramen, and can be casually enjoyed as a dessert.

By the way, my favorite is a dessert with soft serve ice cream topped on fresh melon. It has visual impact and is photogenic too.

Sapporo Bar Hopping Food Tour

If you want to deeply experience the charm of Sapporo, it's recommended to visit not only famous restaurants for tourists but also dining establishments cherished by local people.

At these establishments, you can not only enjoy local gourmet cuisine made with fresh local ingredients, but also interact with local people.

However, since there are numerous dining establishments in Sapporo, if you're visiting for the first time, you may be confused about where to go.

With a bar hopping food tour guided by a local guide who speaks English, you can visit popular establishments among locals, such as izakayas where you can enjoy Hokkaido seafood.

Since you can decide what you want to eat and which shops you want to visit while consulting with the guide, you can fully enjoy the five types of gourmet food introduced this time.

Some dining establishments may not have English menus, but if you participate in the tour, you can enjoy with peace of mind with the guide's support. The attractive point is that you can experience the "real taste of Sapporo" that you can't encounter through sightseeing alone.

Three Areas to Enjoy Local Street Food in Sapporo

Since there are many dining establishments in Sapporo, you may be confused about where to go.

So from here, I'll introduce three areas where you can enjoy Local Street Food. Within each area, there are many spots where you can enjoy representative Sapporo gourmet cuisine, so you can experience various foods at once. Whether you're exploring Sapporo Street Food 2025 offerings or seeking traditional favorites, these areas will satisfy your culinary curiosity.

Nijo Market

Nijo Market

"Nijo Market," located in central Sapporo, is a perfect spot to enjoy local street food.

This market, which has a history of over 100 years, is cherished by both local people and tourists, and is full of vitality from the morning.

Along the street, shops handling seafood are lined up, and you can easily enjoy dishes using Hokkaido's seafood such as salmon, salmon roe, scallops, and crab.

Particularly popular is "Kaisen-don" (seafood rice bowl). I have visited there before, and since they top the rice with fresh seafood purchased that morning, I could savor the deliciousness unique to Hokkaido that can only be enjoyed here.

Since it's open from early morning, it's also recommended to enjoy it as breakfast.

Also, the menu items where they grill fish right in front of you after ordering are exquisite. Watching the craftsman grill with professional skills is also an enjoyable time.

If you want to taste seafood rice bowls at Nijo Market, "Nijo Market Sapporo Seafood Donbe," which is popular with both locals and tourists, is recommended.

This shop, located in a corner of the market, is known for its rice bowls that generously use fresh seafood purchased every morning.

It has a reputation for the freshness of ingredients and the beauty of presentation, and the rice bowls lined with colorful seafood are gorgeous to look at, making you want to take photos.

I particularly like the "Tokusen Sapporo Asaichidon," which has fresh seafood such as salmon, tuna, salmon roe, sea urchin, crab, and scallops piled up so much that it overflows from the bowl. Since you can enjoy various types of seafood at once, you can be very satisfied.

Tanuki Koji Street

Tanuki Koji Street

Tanuki Koji Street is a shopping district with a total length of about 1 km, with about 200 shops, and is known as a historic area that was established in the 1800s.

Along the covered street, old-fashioned diners, stall-style shops, izakayas, ramen specialty shops, sweets shops, and more are lined up, and the attractive point is that you can eat and walk around without worrying about the weather.

During the day, it's crowded with tourists and local shoppers, and when night falls, izakayas and bars become lively, and the atmosphere changes completely.

From seafood and ramen to zangi and sweet sweets, there's a wide variety, and you can enjoy Sapporo's food culture in one place. This is truly one of the must-visit destinations for experiencing Sapporo Street Food 2025.

It has good access and is an area that's easy for travelers visiting Sapporo for the first time to walk around, so it's a perfect place to casually taste local food while stopping by between sightseeing.

Author's Recommended Shop: SOUP CURRY GARAKU

SOUP CURRY GARAKU
Source:Tabelog

If you want to enjoy Sapporo-like cuisine at Tanuki Koji Street, "SOUP CURRY GARAKU" is a shop I definitely want you to stop by.

Soup curry is a local gourmet dish born in Sapporo, with large-cut vegetables and meat in curry-flavored soup, eaten together with rice.

By the way, while general Japanese curry rice is a style where thick roux is poured over rice, soup curry is something where you enjoy the spice-scented soup and the taste of the ingredients themselves.

General Japanese curry rice is basically a style where you eat thick curry sauce poured over rice. It's also a staple dish as home cooking.

On the other hand, soup curry is a dish with plenty of large-cut vegetables and meat in spicy soup with a smooth texture.

It's often served separately from rice, and the common style is to gradually dip rice into the soup to eat.

In other words, curry rice is a dish where you enjoy the deliciousness of the sauce and rice as one, while soup curry is an ingredient-centered dish where you savor the taste of spices and ingredients.

Each has completely different charms, so if you compare them, you can realize the depth of Japan's curry culture.

Sapporo has many soup curry specialty shops, but GARAKU is highly popular among locals and always has a line.

GARAKU's soup curry is characterized by using Japanese-style broth made with bonito flakes and kelp.

There are various menus, but I recommend the one with a large chicken leg and various vegetables. You can also order the spice level and amount of rice according to your preference.

Sapporo Ramen Yokocho

Sapporo Ramen Yokocho

Located in the heart of Sapporo, in the Susukino area, "Sapporo Ramen Yokocho" is a must-visit destination for ramen lovers and an essential part of any Sapporo Street Food 2025 experience.

This area, with over ten ramen specialty shops lined up in a narrow alley, started as a street stall area in the 1950s and has now become one of Sapporo's representative gourmet spots.

In Yokocho, there's a wide range of styles from long-established shops that preserve traditional flavors to shops with modern arrangements, and you can enjoy comparing different tastes.

Many shops are open until late at night, so it's recommended to stop by after drinking.

I was captivated by the deliciousness of Sapporo's ramen and visited for lunch and dinner to compare several shops.

Author's recommended shop: Sapporo Ramen Haruka

Author's recommended shop: Sapporo Ramen Haruka

Among the various shops in Sapporo Ramen Yokocho, "Sapporo Ramen Haruka" stands out with its unique character.

The owner has a background of accumulating culinary experience in Japanese, Western, and Chinese cuisine at hotels and restaurants, and fuses that diverse knowledge and skills into Sapporo Ramen, providing a bowl that adds a new approach to traditional flavors.

While there are many long-established shops that preserve tradition, Haruka represents a new era of Sapporo Ramen.

The signature menu item, Kara Miso Ramen, is characterized by its deep flavor that layers spices and umami on a rich soup, and has a spicy taste.

You can choose the level of spiciness, and since I like spicy food, I chose "Strong." Although you can definitely feel the spiciness of the chili pepper, it has a deep flavor, and I really appreciated the deliciousness of the soup.

After bar hopping in Susukino, Sapporo Ramen Yokocho is recommended

After enjoying bar hopping in Susukino, how about enjoying ramen as a finishing meal? In Japan, there is a culture of eating ramen as the final meal after drinking alcohol.

If you want to savor finishing ramen, "Sapporo Ramen Yokocho" located in the center of the nightlife spot is recommended and should be on every visitor's Sapporo Street Food 2025 itinerary.

In a narrow alley in a corner of the Susukino area, more than 10 ramen specialty shops line up, wrapped in a unique atmosphere of liveliness.

Starting as a street stall area in the 1950s, it is now known as one of Sapporo's representative gourmet areas.

Ramen has various types of soup, but when it comes to Sapporo specialties, it's Miso Ramen, and a bowl topped with stir-fried vegetables, butter, and corn in a rich miso soup is perfect for Sapporo's cold nights.

Each shop has its own personality in soup, noodles, and toppings, and the ability to enjoy comparing different tastes is an attractive point.

The atmosphere is welcoming to tourists, and since it's open until late at night, you can easily stop by during sightseeing or walking around the city.

To fully enjoy Japan, it's best to be guided by local guides who know the area well!

To fully enjoy Japan, it's best to be guided by local guides who know the area well!

If you want to deeply enjoy Japanese food culture, it's recommended to participate in tours led by local guides.

For example, in Tokyo's Shinjuku, night tours are held where you visit popular local shops while walking through "Omoide Yokocho," where small restaurants gather in narrow alleys continuing from the postwar period, and the lively entertainment district "Kabukicho."

Since English-speaking guides provide guidance, even first-time travelers can participate with peace of mind.

The attractive point of the tour is that while tasting Japanese sake, local cuisine, and street food little by little, you can hear detailed explanations about the background of food and culture.

You can also visit small famous shops not listed in guidebooks and back-alley shops where local regular customers gather, places that are difficult to find on your own.
