Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido and has flourished as the center of Hokkaido's economy and culture.
Around Sapporo Station, modern commercial facilities line the streets, and the city is home to historic buildings, expansive parks, and numerous restaurants serving local ingredients, making it one of Japan's most popular tourist destinations.
Sapporo is known as a city where urban and natural elements harmonize—you can experience the metropolitan atmosphere in the city center, while lush nature awaits just a short distance away.
In this article, we will introduce the appeal of Mt. Okura Observation Deck, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Sapporo, a city where urban life and nature coexist.

Sapporo's Beauty Has Led to Numerous Observation Decks Throughout the City
Sapporo boasts beautiful cityscapes with uniformly planned roads laid out in a grid pattern and nature that transforms with each season.
To enjoy these cityscapes, Sapporo has numerous observation decks, including Mt. Okura Observation Deck where you can overlook the city from a ski jump platform, JR Tower Observatory T38 directly connected to Sapporo Station, and Mt. Moiwa Observation Deck known for its beautiful night views.
Mt. Okura Observation Deck is Recommended for Those Who Want to Enjoy Sapporo's Cityscape

Mt. Okura Observation Deck is located at the top of Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium, which served as the ski jumping venue for the Sapporo Olympics. From this observation deck at an elevation of 307 meters, you can see not only Sapporo's cityscape but also a panoramic view extending to the Ishikari Plain.
The observation deck is situated at the starting point of the ski jump, making it a unique facility in the world where you can enjoy the scenery with the ski jump slope in view. 5 Reasons Why the Author Recommends Mt. Okura Observation Deck
You Can See Breathtaking Views Overlooking Many Landmarks Scattered Throughout the City

The view overlooking Sapporo's representative landmarks, including the high-rise buildings around Sapporo Station, Daiwa House Premist Dome, and Hokkaido University, is a must-see!
The unique scenery created by the vast nature and modern Sapporo cityscape is wonderful. When I first visited the observation deck, I lost track of time and was completely absorbed in taking photos.
The scenery changes depending on where you stand, so try enjoying the cityscape from various angles.
You Can Enjoy Not Only Sapporo's Beautiful Cityscape but Also the Collaboration with Nature Through All Four Seasons
Source:Google Maps
Another attractive point is that from the observation deck, you can enjoy not only Sapporo's beautiful cityscape but also the collaboration with nature through all four seasons.
In spring, you can see the interplay of fresh greenery and melting snow; in summer, the lush green extending to the Ishikari Plain and the Sea of Japan; in autumn, the gradient of autumn leaves; and in winter, a silver world covered in snow—allowing you to savor scenery unique to each season.
My recommendation is autumn, when the leaves turn yellow and red. I was captivated by the gorgeous scenery of autumn leaves colorfully adorning Sapporo's cityscape and found myself gazing at it, forgetting the passage of time.
The Atmosphere is Completely Different Between Day and Night

From the observation deck, you can enjoy a grand panorama overlooking Sapporo to the Ishikari Plain during the day, and at night, a romantic view where the city lights sparkle like jewels in the darkness.
If you're unsure when to visit the observation deck, I recommend twilight. By visiting at dusk, you can enjoy both the daytime and after-sunset hours together, allowing you to fully appreciate the completely different atmospheres of day and night in one visit!
Both have their own charm, so it's also fun to take photos during the day and night and compare them.
There is an Observation Lounge Where You Can Leisurely Overlook the Cityscape from Indoors

At the observation lounge Cafe Celeste, you can enjoy sweets and drinks while overlooking Sapporo from an elevation of 307 meters.
My top recommendation is the Okoppe Town Soft Serve. This soft-serve ice cream made with milk from North Plain Farm, a famous farm in Okoppe Town, offers a smooth texture and the gentle sweetness of milk!
Why not spend a relaxing time in this lounge—whose name means "celestial" in French—while feeling close to the clear sky?

By taxi, you can arrive in about 6 minutes from Sapporo Station, which is convenient if you're unsure about transferring between trains and buses.

The Sapporo Olympic Museum is one of only three Olympic Museums in Japan, making it an invaluable facility that you simply must visit!
Inside, you'll find numerous exhibits including materials from the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics, as well as medals and equipment from past Winter Olympic Games, where you can learn about the history of the Olympics and Paralympics.
