If You Want to Enjoy Shopping in Hiroshima, Start with Hiroshima Hondori Shopping Street

If you want to enjoy shopping in Hiroshima, start by visiting Hiroshima Hondori Shopping Street.
Hiroshima Hondori Shopping Street is a historic street dating back to the Edo period and is one of the largest arcade shopping streets in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions. Since it's an arcade, you can shop regardless of the weather, and it's always bustling with customers.
You can reach it in about 10 minutes from Hiroshima Station by streetcar, and it's also accessible by multiple forms of public transportation including buses and the Astram Line (Hiroshima's unique rapid transit system), making it an attractive spot to casually visit between sightseeing activities.
What is Hiroshima Hondori Shopping Street?

Hiroshima Hondori Shopping Street stretches approximately 577 meters from Hiroshima PARCO to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, with about 200 shops lining the street, including restaurants, food stores, general goods shops, and specialty stores.
The shops range from establishments with over 100 years of history to the latest trendy stores, offering a wide lineup that's popular with people of all ages and genders.
Numerous events are held throughout the seasons, and by participating in these events, you can enjoy not only shopping but also interactions with local residents.

Highlights of Hiroshima Hondori Shopping Street
Among the many shops gathered at Hiroshima Hondori Shopping Street, there are four shops that deserve special attention:
- Andersen
- Watabe Tōen at Hondōri Hills
- Hiroshima Yume Plaza
- Onigiri Nitaya Hondori-ten
For dining, my recommendations are the bakery "Andersen" and the onigiri specialty shop "Onigiri Nitaya Hondori-ten."
At "Andersen," which has an attached café, you can relax and enjoy meals in a stylish interior, while at "Onigiri Nitaya Hondori-ten," you can choose your favorite onigiri from a menu of over 30 varieties.
For souvenirs, visit "Watabe Tōen at Hondōri Hills," which offers various tableware, or "Hiroshima Yume Plaza," which carries Hiroshima's local specialty products. You're sure to find something uniquely Hiroshima.
The shopping street is filled with attractive shops, so if you allow extra time for sightseeing, you can thoroughly enjoy your shopping experience.
If You Want to Shop at Places Loved by Locals, Ask the Locals Directly

When traveling in large tour groups or on individual trips, you often only get to visit major shopping spots. If you want to shop at places loved by locals, I recommend asking local residents directly.
The Hiroshima Peace (Heiwa) Walking Tour at World Heritage Sites allows you to tour Hiroshima City, while the Miyajima Half-day Trip Historical Walking Tour lets you explore Miyajima—both with knowledgeable local guides for about half a day, so you can be shown shops popular with locals.
If you tell your guide in advance about your preferences or those of your friends, you're sure to find the ideal souvenirs.
