Ultimate Guide to Hiroshima Autumn Leaves 2025: 13 Best Spots for Stunning Fall Foliage and Amazing Foods
Hiroshima Prefecture is a city located in western Japan. It features many world-famous tourist destinations, including peace-related attractions such as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, and places where you can experience a long history like Itsukushima Shrine, attracting many tourists from both domestic and international locations.
As the harsh summer heat subsides, autumn is the perfect season for sightseeing in Hiroshima Prefecture. Once November arrives, you can enjoy tourism while gazing at beautiful autumn foliage scenery.
This time, we will introduce recommended tourist spots where you can observe the beautiful autumn foliage of Hiroshima Prefecture. In addition to tourist information, we will also introduce recommended autumn clothing, gourmet food, and events that are held, so by reading this article, you can complete all the information necessary for Hiroshima autumn tourism.

Hiroshima Autumn Climate and Recommended Clothing
Hiroshima gradually becomes more comfortable as temperatures drop from September to November. While September still has many days exceeding 30°C (86°F), October becomes the most comfortable month of the year with an average temperature of 21°C (70°F). Since the climate and recommended clothing change significantly during the three autumn months, please refer to this article and enjoy sightseeing in the best outfit.
September:
Climate characteristics → September is still a season where you can feel the summer heat. The average maximum daytime temperature is 33°C (91°F), which is not much different from summer. Nights remain hot and humid, but by late September, you can finally begin to feel the cool autumn air. September has many typhoons and is a season prone to rain, so folding umbrellas are very useful.
Recommended clothing → T-shirts, tank tops, camisoles, shorts, skirts + lightweight jackets, sunglasses, parasol/umbrella or folding umbrella (lightweight ones are available at low prices in Japan, so buying them in Japan is also recommended)
October:
Climate characteristics → October has comfortable days with an average daytime temperature of 21.3°C (70.34°F). Humidity also decreases, and you won't feel the muggy heat of summer. The average minimum temperature is also a cool and pleasant 17.8°C (64°F). It's no exaggeration to say this is the most comfortable month of the year, but it's recommended to carry a long-sleeved jacket to be able to respond to any climate conditions.
Recommended clothing → T-shirts, polo shirts, shorts, skirts, lightweight long pants + jacket (waterproof ones with hoods are convenient as they can handle sudden rain), and having a folding umbrella will allow you to sightsee with even more peace of mind.
November:
Climate characteristics → November is the best season to enjoy autumn foliage. The average temperature throughout the day is 14.8°C (59°F), which is a bit chilly, but you can spend time comfortably by devising your clothing. At night, temperatures drop below 10°C (50°F) and you'll feel cold, so be sure to carry an outer garment. While this is a season with little rain, last year there was a day that recorded 223mm of precipitation, so keeping a folding umbrella is also recommended.
Recommended clothing → Lightweight knitwear, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, jeans, long-length bottoms + jacket, folding umbrella
Hiroshima Autumn Highlights
When it comes to Japan's autumn traditions, it's the "autumn foliage (Koyo)" where green leaves turn red and yellow. Hiroshima Prefecture has many famous autumn foliage spots where you can enjoy beautiful autumn scenery that harmonizes with the city and nature.
Author's Selection! Must-Visit Autumn Foliage Spots in Hiroshima Autumn by Area
In Hiroshima Prefecture, the beginning of color change and peak periods vary slightly by area, but from early to mid-November, you can appreciate beautiful autumn foliage in any area. For those planning to visit Hiroshima for autumn foliage, we recommend aiming for mid-November.
From here, I will introduce carefully selected autumn foliage spots that I wholeheartedly recommend, organized by area. I will also introduce the timing of color change beginnings and peak periods, so please make use of this information for your travel planning.
Miyajima
Miyajima (Itsukushima) has long been known as "the island where gods dwell" and has been considered a sacred area. This Miyajima has pristine nature and many old shrines and temples. It's an area where you can enjoy the collaboration of historical landscapes and autumn foliage, making it one of the most spectacular destinations for experiencing Hiroshima autumn.
Daisho-in
"Daisho-in" is the oldest temple in Miyajima, founded in 806. It's a nature-rich temple located at the foot of "Mount Misen," the highest mountain in Miyajima, where you can enjoy temple exploration while appreciating the seasonal beauty that defines Hiroshima autumn.
There are many highlights such as mandalas created by Tibetan monks and the gorgeous atmosphere of "Henjokutsu" where 88 Buddhist statues are enshrined in the underground of the pagoda. This is one of my favorite temples where you can experience an exotic worldview far from everyday life.
At Daisho-in, during the autumn foliage season, illuminations and sea of clouds performances created with artificial mist are held. The sea of clouds is a unique sight at Daisho-in that takes advantage of the mountain's elevation differences, and the fantastical beauty of the sea of clouds flowing through the beautiful mountains colored with Hiroshima autumn foliage and the majestic pagoda is a must-see.

Momijidani Park
"Momiji" is a plant that symbolizes Japan's autumn foliage. The beautiful leaves that turn red during the autumn foliage season have long been loved as a symbol that beautifully colors Japan's autumn, particularly the magnificent Hiroshima autumn.
Miyajima's "Momijidani Park" is a park with 700 momiji trees planted as its name suggests, and it's Miyajima's representative autumn foliage spot. Around the vermillion-colored "Momijidani Bridge" over the river, you can see the collaboration of the bridge and autumn foliage at this best spot, where you can encounter beautiful scenery that captures the essence of Hiroshima autumn atmosphere.
From Momijidani Park, hiking courses continue to Mt. Misen. The trail is a way to enjoy autumn foliage that I also recommend. From the summit of Mt. Misen, you can overlook the spectacular view of the Seto Inland Sea. If you want to enjoy the charm of autumn foliage and Mt. Misen, please try the trail too. (It takes about 2 hours to reach the summit)

Shinomiya Shrine
"Shinomiya Shrine" is a shrine located within Momijidani Park. It's a shrine belonging to "Itsukushima Shrine," which is Miyajima's symbol, and currently enshrines the god who governs fire.
The founding period is unknown, and you can feel the romance that has continued from ancient times from the old shrine and torii gate. The beautiful autumn foliage scenery woven by the mysterious shrine and the nature of Momijidani Park will allow you to experience Japan's original landscape enhanced by the vibrant colors of Hiroshima autumn.
Usually the shrine is enveloped in silence, but every year on the night of the 1st day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, a festival called "Tanomosan" celebrating a good harvest is held and shows liveliness. The sight of boats floating on the Seto Inland Sea during the Shinto ritual is very fantastical, so if you visit Miyajima during this time, please try to participate.

Omoto Park
Source:Google Maps
"Omoto Park" is a nature-rich park with primeval forests growing at the foot of Mt. Misen. During the autumn foliage season, the forest begins to turn red and yellow, spreading a colorful and beautiful contrasting landscape that perfectly showcases the natural beauty of Hiroshima autumn. It's also famous as a cherry blossom spot in spring and is selected as one of the "Eight Views of Itsukushima," which represents Miyajima's beautiful scenery.
"Omoto Shrine" in Omoto Park is an older shrine than Itsukushima Shrine, which was founded in 593, and is said to be the root of Itsukushima Shrine. The main hall rebuilt in 1523 is also designated as an important cultural property.
Deer, said to be messengers of the gods, live in the park, and you can take photos of the deer. The combination of deer and autumn foliage has long been familiar as a seasonal tradition of Japanese autumn, especially during the peak of Hiroshima autumn. Please enjoy Japan's autumn while strolling through the nature-rich park.

Senjokaku (Hokoku Shrine)
"Senjokaku" is the largest wooden building in Miyajima. The name derives from being wide enough to fit 1000 tatami mats (Senjo). It actually has a width that can fit 857 tatami mats and gives you a sense of the charm of open wooden architecture.
Senjokaku was built in 1587 by order of the Sengoku-era Shogun "Toyotomi Hideyoshi," but because Hideyoshi died during construction, the work was interrupted midway. Originally it was planned to be used as a temple, but now it's a shrine where Toyotomi Hideyoshi is enshrined, and it's beloved as a shrine with benefits for advancement and good relationships.
The highlight of autumn foliage is the large ginkgo biloba visible from inside the building. The golden ginkgo biloba reflected on Senjokaku's floor provides a photogenic worldview like a water mirror, creating one of the most Instagram-worthy spots to capture Hiroshima autumn.

Hiroshima City
In Hiroshima city, you can enjoy beautiful autumn foliage at Shukkei-en, which is beloved as a place of relaxation for citizens, as well as at shrines and temples in the suburbs. Here we introduce three recommended spots where you can enjoy autumn colors together with historic buildings and nature during your Hiroshima autumn experience.
Shukkei-en Garden
"Shukkei-en Garden" is a nature-rich garden located in the center of Hiroshima city. This Japanese garden was created in 1602 and has over 400 years of history, where you can experience Japanese atmosphere reminiscent of Kyoto.
With valleys and mountains expressed through trees and rocks centered around a pond, you can experience the beauty of Japanese nature, which is also part of Shukkei-en's charm. Moreover, Shukkei-en is a popular autumn foliage spot in Hiroshima city, and during the peak autumn season in late November, annual illuminations are held.
The autumn leaves illuminated by lights reflecting on the pond create a fantastic scene, allowing you to enjoy a mystical world that feels like a different realm has opened up. The scenery of autumn foliage reflected on the water surface is one of my favorite Japanese sights, so if you visit Hiroshima city during the season, please definitely visit Shukkei-en for an unforgettable Hiroshima autumn experience.

Mitaki-dera Temple
"Mitaki-dera Temple" is a temple founded in 809. While few old buildings remain in Hiroshima city, which was struck by the atomic bomb in 1945, Mitaki-dera Temple, located on a mountain slope away from the city center, did not suffer major damage.
Located at the foot of the mountain, Mitaki-dera Temple is rich in nature, with three waterfalls that give "Mitaki" its name, allowing you to enjoy strolling while listening to the beautiful sound of flowing water. Mitaki-dera Temple is also famous as a renowned autumn foliage spot, and in November, the momiji (maple trees) turn red, presenting vivid scenery perfect for your Hiroshima autumn journey.
The autumn foliage around the Important Cultural Property Pagoda and the moss-covered garden is rich in atmosphere, allowing you to fully enjoy Japanese elegance.

"Fudo-in Temple" is a temple that escaped atomic bomb damage despite being only about 4km from the center of Hiroshima city. The "Kondo" built in 1540 is the only National Treasure in Hiroshima city, showcasing traditional architectural styles introduced from China.
Fudo-in Temple has ancient history, said to have existed at this location during the Heian era of the 700s. Many of the pagodas and Buddhist statues in the temple grounds were created over 500 years ago, allowing you to feel the romance of ancient times.
In November, the momiji planted in the temple grounds turn red, and the solemn atmosphere of the temple is dyed in vivid red colors of the momiji. This is one of the few spots in Hiroshima city where you can enjoy the collaboration of historic buildings and autumn foliage during your Hiroshima autumn exploration. If you're interested in Japanese history, please definitely visit.

Other Areas
Seventy percent of Hiroshima prefecture's area consists of mountains. In mountainous areas, you can see dynamic autumn foliage that cannot be experienced in urban areas. Even though they are far from the city center, there are many famous spots worth taking the time to visit, and in autumn, many tourists from within and outside the prefecture visit seeking autumn foliage. Here we introduce five autumn foliage spots in Hiroshima prefecture that I also recommend for an exceptional Hiroshima autumn experience.
Buttsu-ji Temple
Buttsu-ji Temple is a temple founded in 1397 with over 600 years of history. Usually a quiet temple in the deep mountains, it's also famous as one of western Japan's most beautiful autumn foliage spots, attracting many tourists from outside the prefecture seeking spectacular views.
I'm also someone who loves the scenery at Buttsu-ji, and I'm captivated every time by the colorful sights woven by the momiji and maple trees spreading throughout the temple grounds. The carpet-like scenery created by fallen leaves on the ground is also beautiful, and the panorama of autumn foliage spreading across your entire field of vision is a charm that can only be enjoyed at Buttsu-ji nestled in the mountains, making it a highlight of any Hiroshima autumn adventure.
During autumn foliage season, special viewings are held annually, allowing you to tour the interior of the main hall, which is usually not accessible to the public. Please enjoy the charm of Buttsu-ji's 600-year history along with the autumn foliage.

The primeval forest of broad-leaved trees, including maple and momiji, turns red and yellow in November, allowing you to enjoy dynamic autumn foliage scenery perfect for your Hiroshima autumn journey.
Taishakukyo can be divided into two main areas. The first is the "Shinryu-ko" area with an artificial lake created as a dam. At Shinryu-ko, sightseeing boats operate, allowing you to overlook the grand panorama of autumn foliage spreading around the lake.
The second is the "Kamitaisyaku" area, which extends into the remote interior. This area features limestone caves and waterfalls created by nature and is also a recommended spot for trekking aimed at viewing autumn foliage.

Ozeki-yama Park
Ozeki-yama Park is located in Miyoshi City in the northern part of Hiroshima Prefecture. This park sits on a 202-meter-high mountain along the river and is beloved as a local recreation spot for Miyoshi City residents.
The park is home to 800 maple trees (Momiji), which turn a beautiful red color in late October, creating a spectacular sight throughout the park. During the autumn foliage season, illumination events are also held. The park features well-maintained walking trails where you can enjoy a stroll to the summit while taking in the fantastic autumn scenery. From the observation deck at the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Miyoshi City's night scenery.
Since this park hasn't been heavily commercialized as a tourist destination, you can truly feel the daily life of local residents. It's also close to the previously mentioned Taishakukyo, so if you want to enjoy the charm of Hiroshima Prefecture's mountainous cities, we recommend visiting both locations together during your Hiroshima autumn experience.

Sandankyo Gorge
Sandankyo Gorge is a magnificent 16-kilometer-long gorge located in the northwestern part of Hiroshima Prefecture. It's designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty in Japan, where you can enjoy breathtaking views unique to gorges, including naturally formed rock faces and waterfalls.
It's also highly popular as an autumn foliage spot, and the entire 16-kilometer section is filled with natural landscapes where you can enjoy the collaboration between autumn colors and the gorge. Among these, the 130-meter-long Sandan Falls is a maple viewing spot I particularly recommend, where you can admire the spectacular collaboration of the powerful waterfall and autumn foliage that defines the beauty of Hiroshima autumn.
Additionally, ferry boats operate on some sections of Sandankyo. The cruise experience, where you can enjoy beautiful cliffs and emerald green waters, will surely become an unforgettable and moving experience during your Hiroshima autumn journey.

Saburo-no-taki
Source:FUN! FAN! FUCHU!!
Saburo-no-taki is a gentle waterfall approximately 30 meters long. In summer, it's popular with children as a natural water slide where they can enjoy waterfall sliding. Around the waterfall, there are fishing ponds and barbecue areas, making it a spot where you can enjoy natural recreation even outside the waterfall sliding season.
You might find it hard to believe, but Saburo-no-taki has been maintained by a single married couple for over 40 years. This couple also planted the 800 maple trees around the waterfall, and Saburo-no-taki has now developed into one of Hiroshima Prefecture's leading autumn foliage destinations. The collaboration between the waterfall and autumn colors is breathtakingly beautiful, and the maple leaves flowing into the waterfall basin are equally charming. Every year in mid-November, an autumn festival is held, creating a lively atmosphere that celebrates the peak of Hiroshima autumn.

Hiroshima's Exquisite Foods to Enjoy During "Autumn Appetite Season" - Recommended Restaurants
Oysters
The Seto Inland Sea, located in southern Hiroshima Prefecture, has calm waves, making it an excellent spot for oyster cultivation. Therefore, Hiroshima Prefecture boasts the largest oyster catch in Japan and is famous as a place where you can eat fresh and delicious oysters.
Hiroshima oysters are characteristically large and offer a creamy, rich flavor that perfectly complements the Hiroshima autumn season.
Yakigaki No Hayashi
Source:Official website
Founded in 1948, "Yakigaki No Hayashi" is the birthplace of grilled oysters, the first restaurant in Japan to serve grilled oysters to customers.
While oysters can be enjoyed in various dishes such as hot pot and fried preparations, grilled oysters are the best way to enjoy the pure taste of the oysters themselves. Hayashi is particular about their grilling techniques, cooking oysters with the same excellent techniques that have remained unchanged since the restaurant's founding. Since they grill oysters after receiving your order, you can enjoy the fresh-grilled taste. The large, fresh, and flavorful oysters are so delicious that I found myself completely captivated by them - a perfect taste of Hiroshima autumn.
At Hayashi, you can also enjoy raw oysters. Being able to eat raw oysters year-round is a unique charm of being in the production area. Please enjoy the fresh oysters that only the production area can offer!

Setouchi Lemon
The area around the Seto Inland Sea, blessed with a warm and mild climate, perfectly matches the conditions for growing lemons. About half of the lemons harvested in Japan are produced in Hiroshima, and they are also beloved under the name "Setouchi lemon."
The characteristics of Setouchi lemon are their thin skin and densely packed flesh. Their refreshing, subtle acidity can be enjoyed in various dishes beyond just sweets.
Chidori
Source:Yahoo! Travel
"Chidori" is a restaurant located along the Shimanami Kaido, the road that continues from Hiroshima Prefecture to Shikoku. Since its establishment in 1965, it has continued to serve Hiroshima's local cuisine, centered around the famous Setouchi octopus.
At Chidori, you can enjoy a hot pot that luxuriously uses sliced Setouchi lemon. Even as a Japanese person, I was initially surprised by "lemon in hot pot!?" but the refreshing acidity of the Setouchi lemon further enhances the deliciousness of the soup, and I became completely absorbed by the umami of the acidic broth.
The lemon hot pot contains oysters, octopus, sea bream, and other ingredients, allowing you to fully taste Hiroshima's flavors. Only three servings are prepared per day, so those interested should definitely make a reservation before visiting.

RIVA
Source:diamond dining
"RIVA" is a restaurant in central Hiroshima City where you can taste Hiroshima's local cuisine. It's a place where you can enjoy courses of local dishes using seasonal ingredients, and each carefully plated dish looks like a work of art.
Setouchi lemon is used even in the details, such as in "Lemon kosho," a uniquely Japanese seasoning made by mixing lemon with chili peppers, and you can feel the elaborate attention to detail in each dish.
At RIVA, you can also enjoy hot pot dishes using lemon. It's a dish called Shabu-shabu, where you dip sliced pork into broth, and the refreshing lemon flavor combined with the juicy meat's umami creates an outstanding combination.
The restaurant has a calm atmosphere where you can enjoy photogenic dishes, making it recommended for dates as well.

Momiji Manju
"Momiji manju" is a Japanese confection originating from Miyajima, shaped like momiji (maple leaves). It's a confection inspired by the momiji in Momijidani Park, with the original flavor being anko (sweet red bean paste) inside castella sponge cake.
Currently, various shops sell momiji manju, and there are said to be over 100 varieties including those with chocolate and cream fillings. Seasonal momiji manju are also sold, and during Hiroshima autumn, you can enjoy momiji manju with fresh-tasting anko made from freshly harvested red beans.
Nishikido
Source:Official website
"Nishikido" is the most famous momiji manju shop in Hiroshima. It's a long-established store with over 70 years of history, founded in 1951, and you can purchase Nishikido's momiji manju at various spots including stations and airports.
They offer many variations, from the classic koshian (smooth anko paste) to modern flavors with chocolate and fruit fillings. During Hiroshima autumn, seasonal limited flavors with candied pumpkin are sold, allowing you to enjoy autumn-flavored momiji manju that can only be tasted during this season.
Among their wide variety of products, my recommendation is "Nama Momiji." The combination of the chewy texture from glutinous rice and the refreshing anko with yuzu citrus creates a supreme flavor.

Monthly Introduction to Autumn Events You Can Enjoy in Hiroshima
Autumn, with its pleasant climate, is the perfect season to enjoy sightseeing. Hiroshima prefecture also hosts various events in different locations. Here, we'll introduce recommended events where you can feel the essence of autumn, picked by month.
Must-See Events in Hiroshima for September
Source:Daishoin
In September, daytime temperatures often exceed 30℃ (86℉), so many events are held from evening onwards. In recent years, with temperatures reaching nearly 35℃ (95℉) even at night in July and August, fireworks festivals - traditionally summer evening attractions - are increasingly being held in autumn. In Hiroshima prefecture as well, fireworks festivals are held in various locations where you can enjoy emotionally rich nighttime seasonal attractions.
Additionally, many events connected to Shinto rituals like "Tanomosan" are held at shrines and temples. September is the harvest season for crops and is also called "the autumn of abundance." Events praying to the gods for good harvests are held throughout the region, where you can experience vibrant festivals and feel the energy that local people possess.
How about participating in events on September evenings when you begin to feel the coolness and enjoying Japanese traditions?

Must-See Events in Hiroshima for October
In Japan, there's an expression "aki no yonaga" (long autumn nights). This is because in October, compared to summer, the sun sets earlier and the nights become longer. This phrase also evokes the unique charm of autumn nights, such as starry skies viewed on cool nights and the sounds of insects.
Such October nights feature events you can enjoy at night held in various locations, including the Onomichi Aki Matsuri where lights illuminate 30,000 "Bonbori" (paper lanterns), as well as fireworks festivals.
Furthermore, Saijo in Hiroshima is famous as one of Japan's three major sake-producing regions alongside Fushimi in Kyoto and Nada in Hyogo, and every year a Sake Festival is held where you can enjoy local sake and Japanese sake gathered from across the country. The event features sake tastings and brewery tours, and as someone who loves Japanese sake, it's an event I really look forward to. It's one of the nationally significant sake festivals, so if you enjoy alcohol, please definitely participate.

Must-See Events in Hiroshima for November
November is the peak of autumn foliage in Hiroshima. Events related to autumn leaves are held in various locations. The most popular autumn foliage event is the illumination. The red and yellow world brightly lit in the darkness is fantastical, and it's a seasonal autumn attraction I look forward to every year.
Local autumn foliage festivals often feature not only illuminations but also markets where local restaurants and farmers set up stalls, allowing you to enjoy local gourmet food and produce alongside the autumn foliage, so you can savor local autumn cuisine as well.
During autumn foliage festivals held at shrines and temples, many places simultaneously offer special viewings where you can tour the inside of pagodas that are normally not accessible to the public. The vivid scenery of autumn leaves pairs perfectly with shrines and temples, so please enjoy the beautiful scenery you can only encounter during this season.
