Ueno September 2026: Gei-sai Art Festival, Museum Exhibitions & Cultural Events Guide
Tokyo, which I consider one of the world's most dynamic and captivating megacities, is my absolute favorite destination where you can experience an incredible fusion of ultra-modern innovation and deeply rooted traditions all within a single urban landscape. As someone who has explored countless cities around the globe, I find myself constantly amazed by Tokyo's endless layers of culture, cuisine, and experiences.
However, due to Tokyo's enormous scale and incredibly diverse neighborhoods, each with their own unique character and attractions, planning an effective itinerary can be genuinely overwhelming for visitors. In fact, a Canadian friend of mine visited Tokyo but later expressed frustration, saying, "I spent most of my time just figuring out transportation and barely scratched the surface. I felt like I missed the real Tokyo experience because I didn't know where locals actually go."
This shows that Tokyo can be an intimidating destination for foreign visitors to fully explore without proper local insights.
This is why I, as a resident in Tokyo, would like to recommend tours where you can have the city guided by local guides like myself who know Tokyo inside and out. Magical Trip offers numerous local tours that guide you through the city efficiently and allow you to enjoy it deeply.
Due to their high quality, they were selected for TripAdvisor's Best of the Best for two consecutive years, 2024 and 2025.

They offer a wide variety of tours, including the award-winning Tokyo Bar Hopping Night Tour in Shinjuku, A bar hopping tour that takes you to truly beloved local gems known only to residents - the "All-You-Can-Drink Bar Hopping Tour in Ueno", and the Shibuya Bar Hopping Night Tour in Tokyo in vibrant Shibuya, the heart of youth culture.
Just having commentary doubles or even triples Tokyo's enjoyment. When you come to Tokyo, don't just enjoy events, but please deeply enjoy each neighborhood with the guidance of local guides.
Introduction
September in Tokyo offers ideal weather for tourism, as the lingering summer heat begins to subside and the climate becomes more comfortable.
Ueno, in particular, is known as Tokyo's cultural district, where art museums, museums, and zoos are concentrated. Visiting Ueno during this time when autumn begins to make its presence felt allows you to thoroughly appreciate Japanese art in a calm and peaceful atmosphere.
This time, I'll share carefully selected special events related to art and culture that you can enjoy during this September 2026 Ueno Event season. I'll also introduce tips for fully enjoying Ueno, so please use this as a reference.
September's Annual "Gei-sai" Takes Place in Ueno
Among the events held in Ueno during September, the event I most highly recommend to foreign tourists is Gei-sai.Gei-sai is the school festival organized by Tokyo University of the Arts, Japan's premier art university.
Incidentally, Tokyo University of the Arts is known as Japan's only national comprehensive arts university, having produced numerous renowned artists including painters, musicians, and architects.
At Gei-sai, students attending Tokyo University of the Arts captivate visitors with expressions using both traditional arts and cutting-edge technology.
For foreign tourists, Gei-sai serves as a place to experience Japanese culture firsthand and is guaranteed to create unforgettable memories.

- Dates: TBA (September 5 - 7, 2025)
- Venue: Tokyo University of the Arts Ueno Campus, Ueno Park
- Access: About 10 minutes walk from JR "Ueno" Station Park Exit

Highlights of September's Featured Event "Gei-sai"
The Main Attraction: "Mikoshi" That Seems Ready to Come to Life

The symbol of Gei-sai is the Mikoshi (portable shrines) that students create with their hearts and souls. The Mikoshi created by Tokyo University of the Arts students, who fuse traditional techniques with innovative ideas, are all unique and possess a lifelike intensity as if they might start moving at any moment.
Mikoshi are created with different themes each year. Depending on the year, various motifs such as animals or fictional characters appear, so I'm already looking forward to seeing what kind of works will appear this year.
The decorations on the Mikoshi and Happi (festival coats) contain the students' attention to detail, so please be sure to observe these artistic works at the venue.
Spectacular Live Performance Carrying the Mikoshi

One of Gei-sai's highlights is the parade where students carry the Mikoshi they created themselves through the streets of Ueno. This parade is not merely a procession, but also a live performance featuring the students' passionate singing, musical performances, and dancing.
The sight of vigorous Mikoshi movements accompanied by students' enthusiastic chants echoing throughout is truly the essence of energetic Japanese festival scenes. This will appear fresh and exciting to foreign tourists experiencing it for the first time.
Students work diligently to prepare their Mikoshi and performances for this day. Please witness firsthand the spectacular performance by carefully selected artists gathered from all over Japan.
"Artwork Exhibitions" Created by Japan's Highest-Level Students

When visiting Gei-sai, please also pay attention to the works by students displayed within the Tokyo University of the Arts campus.
The numerous works that students dedicate themselves to creating daily - including paintings, sculptures, design, crafts, architecture, and music - provide great inspiration to viewers. I can't hide my amazement every year at their professional-level quality.
The students' free thinking and solid technical skills can be called world-class Japanese art. Their creativity-filled works, which will lead the future art world, allow you to feel the "present" of Japanese contemporary art firsthand.
Please take this opportunity to fully enjoy these masterpieces filled with the passionate dedication of Japanese students.
Also Enjoy the Art Event "KOMOGOMO Exhibition" Organized by Tokyo University of the Arts!

During the period when Gei-sai is held from September 5-7, be sure to stop by the "KOMOGOMO EXPO" taking place at the fountain plaza in Ueno Park.
KOMOGOMO EXPO is an art event hosted by artists who graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, functioning as a platform for young artists to present their works.
I believe the greatest highlight of KOMOGOMO EXPO is the direct interaction between artists and visitors. Having the opportunity to hear directly from Japanese artists about the thoughts and background behind their creations will be a valuable experience for foreign tourists.
Furthermore, at the venue, it's possible to purchase one-of-a-kind artworks, so I recommend taking home pieces by young Japanese artists as memorable souvenirs from your trip.

For Enjoying Tokyo University of the Arts Events, I Recommend Visiting Ueno's Famous Restaurants for Lunch

After visiting Ueno and having my senses stimulated by art events, I also look forward to enjoying gourmet food in the streets of Ueno.
Ueno brings together trending restaurants across a wide range of genres, from long-established traditional restaurants to casual dining establishments. Particularly for lunch, why not visit the famous restaurant "Ponta," which is located close to Tokyo University of the Arts?
At Ponta, "tonkatsu" featuring the rich umami and tender texture of pork is the specialty, but the Japanese cuisine utilizing fresh seafood and seasonal ingredients is also exquisite. You can fully savor traditional Japanese flavors.
Moreover, the reason I recommend Ponta to foreign tourists is also for the Japanese aesthetic ambiance you can feel inside the restaurant. Please thoroughly enjoy Japanese cuisine while basking in the lingering atmosphere of the events.

After Enjoying the Events, Enjoy Bar Hopping in Ueno at Night!

In complete contrast to the daytime art event atmosphere, the nighttime streets of Ueno are illuminated with lanterns and neon lights, creating a nostalgic mood.
To avoid getting confused about "which bar to enter" or "what and how to order" among the many small bars lined up in Ueno, I recommend foreign tourists use the "All-You-Can-Drink Bar Hopping Tour in Ueno."
This tour features local guides who will take you to carefully selected bars. Additionally, since all-you-can-drink is included at each establishment, you can enjoy various types of alcoholic beverages.
Take this opportunity to experience firsthand the Ueno nightlife that Japanese people usually enjoy.

3 Must-See Autumn Events to Enjoy in Ueno in September 2026
There are plenty more events taking place in Ueno this autumn.
Here is a carefully selected list of regular autumn events you can enjoy in Ueno in September 2026.
Uenode Panda Chushu-setsu (Mid-Autumn Festival)

"Chushu-setsu" is a traditional Asian celebration held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, during which people gaze at the full moon and give thanks for the autumn harvest.
"Uenode Panda Chushu-setsu" is an event held annually at the fountain plaza in Ueno Park, themed around this traditional autumn celebration.
Ueno Zoo, located within Ueno Park, is known as the place where giant pandas first arrived in Japan, making pandas a beloved symbol of the Ueno neighborhood.
At this event, visitors can enjoy not only Chinese cuisine from the homeland of pandas, but also Japanese food. With stage performances and more, it's a great place to relax and savor the food at your own pace.
One thing particularly worth recommending is "Geppei," a round baked pastry traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. It comes in a variety of flavors, so trying different ones side by side is a treat in itself.
- Date: TBD
- Access: 2-minute walk from "Ueno" Station via JR Yamanote Line, JR Keihin-Tohoku Line, JR Takasaki Line, or JR Utsunomiya Line
- Admission: Free

Ueno no Yama Cultural Zone Festival

In and around Ueno Park, world-class cultural institutions — including the Tokyo National Museum, The National Museum of Western Art, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, and the National Museum of Nature and Science — are all clustered within approximately a 500-meter radius.
It is rare even on a global scale to find so many first-rate museums within walking distance of one another, and the ability to visit multiple art museums and science museums in a single day is one of the unique attractions of Ueno.
The "Ueno no Yama Cultural Zone Festival" is a special event held every autumn through collaboration among these institutions.
During the festival period, each facility hosts exclusive programs available only during this time. Concerts and other performances are also held, so be sure to check out any programs that catch your interest.
- Date: TBD
- Access: Museums, art galleries, zoo, and concert halls in and around Ueno Park
- Admission: Some programs require paid admission

Youth Festival: Shitamachi-kko Matsuri

"Shitamachi" refers to the warm and approachable neighborhoods spread across the eastern side of Tokyo.
Unlike the high-rise districts of central Tokyo, this area is lined with long-established shops and residences, and retains a traditional way of life where neighbors still look out for one another.
This event is an autumn festival where local children who grew up in Shitamachi take center stage. Powerful taiko drumming and brass band performances by middle school students are featured on stage, and classic Japanese festival food stalls are set up throughout the venue.
There are also booths run by local middle schools, each offering simple games and activities for visitors to enjoy.
Unlike large-scale events, the charm of this festival lies in its simple and warm atmosphere — one that feels like a natural extension of everyday life for the local community.
- Date: TBD
- Access: 2-minute walk from "Ueno Station" via JR Line, Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, or Hibiya Line
- Admission: Free

Art-Related Events Author's Focusing on That Can Be Enjoyed in Ueno in September
I am paying attention to several art events scheduled to be held in Ueno in September 2025. Exhibitions where you can feel Japanese tradition and galleries where you can discover new aspects of famous artists are must-sees.
Under the comfortable autumn climate, please thoroughly enjoy Japanese art.
The British Museum Collection of Japanese Art: Flowers in Full Bloom – Edo Paintings That Crossed the Sea

This is a large-scale special exhibition held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026.
The British Museum in London, UK houses a Japanese art collection of approximately 40,000 works, recognized as one of the most comprehensive collections of Japanese art outside of Japan.
This exhibition introduces carefully selected masterpieces from that collection. Visitors can enjoy paintings such as folding screens, hanging scrolls, and picture scrolls created between the 1600s and 1800s, as well as Ukiyo-e — Japan's distinctive woodblock prints depicting landscapes, beautiful women, and kabuki actors in vivid color.
The highlight of the Ueno event September 2026 is the long-awaited reunion of a series of sliding door paintings (fusuma-e) that were separated approximately 150 years ago among three countries: Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States — and are now brought together again in this very exhibition.
It is a rare and precious opportunity to appreciate masterpieces of Japanese art that have been carefully preserved across the sea.

- Dates: July 25 – October 18, 2026
- Access: 7-minute walk from JR Ueno Station
- Admission: To be announced

Rembrandt the Printmaker: Challenge, Legacy, and Impact

This is an exhibition focused on the printmaking works of the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn.
Known as the "Magician of Light and Shadow," Rembrandt is world-renowned for his oil paintings, but he also produced groundbreaking expressions through a printmaking technique called etching.
Etching is a technique in which a copper plate is corroded with acid to carve delicate lines, which are then printed onto paper. The way deep darkness and the glow of a single candle emerge from nothing but overlapping fine lines is breathtaking when seen up close.
This exhibition brings together works and books gathered from the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam and collections from around the world.
Additionally, the building of the National Museum of Western Art was designed by the renowned architect Le Corbusier and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a place well worth visiting for the architecture alone.
Information:
- Dates: July 7 – September 23, 2026
- Access: 1-minute walk from JR Ueno Station
- Admission: To be announced

For a Deeper Tokyo Experience, Tours Guided by Locals are Recommended

In addition to experiencing Ueno events September 2026, for foreign tourists who want to enjoy Tokyo nights even more deeply, I recommend using private tours guided by local guides.
Among these, I'm particularly focusing on bar hopping tours held throughout Tokyo. In bar hopping tours, you can visit attractive bars and izakaya that only locals know about—places not found in guidebooks—and enjoy them comfortably.
While local establishments may be appealing, they can sometimes be difficult for foreign tourists to enter. However, when entering such establishments with a local guide, you don't need to worry about language or shop etiquette, allowing you to fully enjoy Japanese nightlife without reservation.
- Meeting point: In front of the black pillar (next to Uniqlo Shinjuku West Exit store)
- Tour area: Around Shinjuku
- Start times: 17:00, 18:00, 18:30, 19:00
