The charm of Sapporo lies in its fusion of urban life and nature. While you'll find modern buildings and stylish restaurants, you can also experience the city's history and the beauty of each season throughout various locations.

In addition to fresh seafood, Sapporo features many local specialties and regional dishes that are unique to the area.

There are numerous specialty restaurants serving miso ramen, Genghis Khan (grilled mutton), Ishikari hot pot, and soup curry.

Hokkaido doesn't have a rainy season, and even in summer, the refreshing climate is another attractive feature. You can also enjoy winter sports and river activities.

Sapporo One-day Itinerary to Fully Enjoy Tourist Attractions and Cuisine

Now let's depart on our Sapporo One-day Tour to fully experience the city's charm. Since we'll be visiting many tourist attractions, please wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Make sure to eat a proper breakfast before departure!

9:00AM: Sightseeing Around Sapporo's Symbol "Sapporo Clock Tower"

020620251603_image7.jpg

First, we'll start at the "Sapporo Clock Tower," which can be considered Sapporo's symbol. Located a 10-minute walk from Sapporo Station, the clock tower features a retro appearance with white walls and a red roof. Its modest appearance, quietly standing surrounded by modern urban buildings, is also part of its charm.

The clock chimes every hour on the dot. I recommend arriving about 10 minutes early so you don't miss hearing the bell sound.

The gift shop sells original Clock Tower merchandise. Since the day has just begun, I recommend lightweight items like mini can badges that won't add bulk to your luggage.

Nearby Tourist Spot 1: Odori Park

020620251603_image14.jpg

About a 4-minute walk from the Clock Tower is "Odori Park." Located in central Sapporo, this park stretches approximately 1.5km long, and walking from end to end takes about 30 minutes. With vibrant green lawns, flower beds, sculptures, and fountains, it serves as a relaxing space for citizens.

Throughout the year, many enjoyable events are held, including the winter Snow Festival, the Lilac Festival in May, the YOSAKOI Soran Festival in June, and summer festivals in July and August.

Since it's a popular spot, I recommend taking a leisurely stroll during the less crowded morning hours.

Nearby Tourist Spot 2: Hokkaido Prefectural Government Red Brick Building

020620251603_image24.jpg

The "Hokkaido Prefectural Government," located a 5-minute walk from Sapporo Station, is a historic building designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Citizens affectionately call it the "Red Brick Building."

You can enjoy its beautiful, painting-like exterior that changes with each season, making it a spot worth visiting even just for photography.

Renovation work was conducted in 2025, and it will reopen on July 25th.

10:30AM: Enjoying Sapporo's Cityscape from Sapporo TV Tower

020620251603_image31.jpg

After enjoying the area around the Clock Tower, let's move to Sapporo's landmark tower, "Sapporo TV Tower."

The highlight is undoubtedly the spectacular view from the observation deck 90 meters above ground. Looking down at Odori Park from above, you can enjoy a complete view of the park with its seasonal colors. The area with floor-to-ceiling glass windows provides a thrilling experience.

My recommendation is the shrine dedicated to the original character "TV-tosan" (TV Dad). If you draw an omikuji (fortune slip) and get "kyō" (the worst fortune), you'll receive a lucky charm badge at the gift shop.

Taking photos from directly below the TV Tower creates impressive shots, so please try photographing from this angle!

11:30 PM: Enjoy Sightseeing and Gourmet Food at "Sapporo Nijo Market," Sapporo's Food Center

020620251603_image10.jpg

As you continue your sightseeing, you'll gradually work up an appetite. Let's head to "Sapporo Nijo Market," a must-visit spot for any Sapporo One-day Itinerary. This market has been supporting the citizens' food culture since the late 1860s, beginning when fishermen sold their daily catch here.

Nijo Market brings together Sapporo's food culture, offering not only fresh seafood but also fruits, famous confections, and various other food products. The market's lively atmosphere, filled with energetic voices, is part of the experience's charm. Its convenient location near the city center makes it easy to drop by during your sightseeing adventures.

Here are three carefully selected restaurants I recommend for lunch during your Sapporo One-day Itinerary.

Nijo Market Sapporo Seafood Donbe

020620251603_image8.png
Source:Tabelog

"Donbe" is a popular seafood bowl specialty restaurant that frequently appears in media. Seafood bowls (kaisen-don) are Japanese dishes consisting of sashimi served over rice in a bowl. At this restaurant, you can even bring ingredients purchased from the market to have them prepared for you.

Their business ends for the day once their specially prepared vinegared rice, balanced for aroma and sweetness, runs out. Their homemade soy sauce with a rich, dashi-flavored consistency enhances the deliciousness of the fresh seafood.

The "Kaisen Bara Chirashi," featuring finely cut varieties of sashimi arranged over rice, costs an amazing 500 yen. My recommendation is the "Yosakoi iDon (¥2,980)," where you can savor Hokkaido specialties including salmon, salmon roe, crab, and sea urchin.

Enjoy seasonal seafood in this restaurant that retains its traditional charm!

OHISO

Source:Official website

"OHISO" is a popular restaurant with three locations within Nijo Market. With approximately 30 varieties of seafood bowls available, you'll have trouble deciding which one to try.

My recommendation is their signature "OHISO Don." The luxurious array of seafood overflowing from the bowl is visually stunning and appealing. You can add your favorite toppings, allowing you to create your own original seafood bowl.

The restaurant's specialty, Ezo-bafun sea urchin, is an exquisite taste you must try. The concentrated, rich umami flavor comes from carefully removing excess water overnight.

Don't miss trying their individual dishes, including homemade crab gratin prepared by a chef with a Western cuisine background.

Address: Minami 3-jo Higashi 2-chome, Chuo-ku, Sapporo
Business Hours: Mon-Sat 7:30~15:30 (L.O. 15:00) & 17:00~21:00 (L.O. 20:30) / Sun & Holidays 7:30~16:00 (L.O. 15:30)

Kondo Noboru Shoten

020620251603_image5.jpg
Source:Tabelog

Located at the easternmost end of Nijo Market, "Kondo Noboru Shoten" is a long-established fish shop founded in 1922. They offer not only seasonal seafood but also an abundance of processed marine products like dried fish and seaweed tsukudani, making them beloved by locals. Their homemade salmon roe marinated in soy sauce is exceptional. Many of their processed products have long shelf lives, making them perfect souvenirs for your Sapporo One-day Itinerary.

At "Sushii dokoro Keiran," operated on the same premises, you can enjoy Hokkaido's marine delicacies in various styles, including sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled fish set meals. My favorites include Hokkaido's tender and fluffy shishamo (smelt) and teriyaki-grilled salmon collar.

I also recommend enjoying daytime drinking with beer or sake while snacking on sashimi. This is a recommended establishment where you can enjoy both shopping and dining.

1:00 PM: Visit "Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Deck" - Famous for the Clark Statue and Rich Nature

020620251603_image2.png
Source:Official website

After enjoying lunch at the market, head to the "Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Deck" where you can enjoy magnificent natural scenery. This location offers perfect photo opportunities and shops ideal for souvenir shopping.

There are two ways to get from Sapporo Station to the observation deck: using subway and bus, or taking a taxi. Since bus frequency is limited, be sure to check the schedule in advance.

Subway + Bus: Travel time approximately 30-40 minutes (including transfers) / Fare 490 yen (one way)
Taxi: Travel time approximately 30 minutes / Fare approximately 3,500-4,000 yen (one way)

The Symbol of Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Deck: "Dr. Clark Statue & Dr. Clark Memorial Hall"

020620251603_image19.png
Source:Official website

The statue of Dr. Clark can be said to be the symbol of Hitsujigaoka Observation Deck.

American William Smith Clark came to Japan in 1876 as the first vice-principal of what is now Hokkaido University, to train leaders for Hokkaido's development. Dr. Clark, who spread the frontier spirit to Japan and had a tremendous impact on Hokkaido residents, is also called the "Father of Hokkaido Development." The famous words he left to his students when departing Japan were "Boys, be ambitious."

The memorial hall displays panels where you can learn about the doctor's episodes and achievements, so please visit this as well.

Seasonal Landscapes and Views from the Observation Deck

020620251603_image26.png
Source:Official website

The charm of Hitsujigaoka Observation Deck lies in the scenery that shows different appearances each season.

From spring to early summer, you'll see vivid fresh green grass, and in summer, lavender fields spread across the area. The combination with Hokkaido's refreshing blue sky is beautiful - it's my favorite season. From early summer to autumn on clear weather days, you can also enjoy watching the grazing sheep.

In winter, the magnificent Ishikari Plain is covered in snow, creating a landscape that is truly "the essence of Hokkaido."

I recommend sitting on the benches around the Clark statue and leisurely enjoying an afternoon break. Please fully enjoy the dynamic scenery where you can thoroughly feel Hokkaido's great nature!

"Austria Hall" - Perfect for Souvenir Shopping and Enjoying Desserts

020620251603_image3.png
Source:Official website

After fully enjoying the scenery, why not take a break at "Austria Hall," which has a souvenir shop and rest area?

The specialty soft-serve ice cream comes in Hokkaido-style flavors including vanilla, melon, and lavender. My recommendation is the "Shiroi Koibito" (White Lovers) flavor, a famous Hokkaido confection. You can taste the rich chocolate and milk richness. Please enjoy it with freshly brewed coffee made with special beans.

There are also Hokkaido-specific light meals such as Chinese-style steamed buns filled with venison or lamb meat wrapped in fluffy dough, and Genghis Khan lunch boxes.

At the souvenir shop, try selecting souvenirs you can only buy here, such as original Dr. Clark goods.

3:00 PM: Enjoy Hiking at Mt. Moiwa/Mt. Maruyama

020620251603_image16.png
Source:Mt.Moiwa Ropeway

After being healed by the magnificent scenery, it's time to try some physical activity. Sapporo has several hiking courses called "nature trails" that are well-maintained for easy exploration.

What I recommend is the "Maruyama Route" that climbs Maruyama Mountain, which stands 225m tall. Head for the summit from the trailhead located about 10 minutes by bus from Maruyama-koen subway station. It's a course beloved by citizens as it can be easily climbed in about 1 hour round trip.

Along the way, you'll encounter scenes where you can feel the greatness of nature, including trees over 100 years old. When I visited, I encountered squirrels running across the trees.

Since Maruyama Primeval Forest is designated as a natural monument, please be careful not to collect stones, flowers, or other items.

5:00 PM: Enjoy Shopping and Dinner at Tanuki-Koji Street

020620251603_image27.jpg

After enjoying hiking, take the subway from Maruyama-koen Station and head to Tanuki-Koji Street, a 6-minute walk from Odori Station. This oldest shopping street in Hokkaido has about 200 shops lined up, offering everything from food, miscellaneous goods, to clothing. It retains the atmosphere of old times and is a shopping street beloved by locals.

"Tanukiya" is one of the largest souvenir shops in Sapporo city. The large tanuki (raccoon dog) monument in front of the store has become a symbol of the shopping street.

At my recommended cafe "RIQ," you can taste cheese tea and matcha sweets made with Hokkaido dairy products. It's also recommended to rest your body tired from hiking.

6:00 PM: Enjoy Nightlife in Susukino

020620251603_image23.jpg

If you want to enjoy nighttime Sapporo, Susukino is indispensable as part of your Sapporo One-day Itinerary. Susukino, one of Japan's premier entertainment districts, offers not only Hokkaido gourmet cuisine but also a variety of restaurants and eateries.

There are many bars and izakaya where you can enjoy alcohol, giving Susukino the image of being "the nighttime district." Susukino itself has become a tourist attraction, and experiencing the glittering neon lights and vibrant atmosphere of the city is one way to enjoy it.

Here, I'll introduce carefully selected restaurants I recommend for dinner in Susukino as the perfect conclusion to your Sapporo One-day Itinerary.

Oga (Ishikari Nabe)

020620251603_image13.png
Source:Official website

"Oga" is a Japanese restaurant where you can taste Hokkaido specialties. All seats are completely private rooms, allowing you to relax and enjoy your meal.

My recommendation is the "Ishikari Nabe," salmon and vegetables simmered in a miso-based soup. The broth made with original blended miso brings out the umami of Hokkaido-produced salmon.

In the Ishikari Nabe course, you can also enjoy dishes that make you feel Hokkaido, such as Ezo deer fillet steak, crab gratin, and fresh sashimi.

This is a renowned Japanese restaurant I recommend for those who want to taste various types of Hokkaido gourmet cuisine thoroughly.

Sumiyaki Jingisukan Ishida

020620251603_image6.png
Source:Tabelog

"Sumiyaki Jingisukan Ishida" is a specialty restaurant for "Jingisukan," Hokkaido's local cuisine. The juicy Jingisukan made from the highest quality brand lamb grilled over charcoal is an exquisite taste you can only experience here. Since they carefully hand-cut the meat after receiving orders, you can taste the umami of fresh lamb.

While Jingisukan goes well with any alcohol, my favorite is pairing it with fresh lemon sour made with plenty of squeezed domestic lemons. The refreshing taste pairs excellently with the meat.

They also have many Hokkaido-produced natural wines, so please be sure to visit!

Izakaya Kusachi (Susukino)

020620251603_image30.jpg
Source:Tabelog

"Kusachi" is a long-established izakaya that has been operating in Susukino for over 20 years. You can enjoy single dishes made abundantly with Hokkaido ingredients such as crab, botan shrimp, scallops, asparagus, and potatoes, along with alcohol.

My recommendation is "Kani Daruma," flaked crab meat stuffed into the shell. Since you can taste red snow crab procured from Otaru at a reasonable price, it has become the restaurant's signature menu item. It's also nice that you don't have the trouble of shelling the crab.

The attractive point is also the lineup of precious sake from all over Japan. Please leisurely enjoy Hokkaido specialties and sake in the relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant!

The Nikka Bar (Susukino)

If you want to savor "Nikka Whisky," Japan's representative whisky, how about this bar? At "The Nikka Bar," where you can enjoy alcohol in a relaxed mood, you can compare and taste various types of Nikka whisky. They're particular about ice to taste whisky in the best condition.

For first-time visitors, I recommend the tasting set with easy-to-understand pricing. Please try comparing various tastes, including rare whiskies.

The restaurant's original nama chocolate that goes well with whisky is also exquisite. Please savor the world-renowned Nikka whisky while viewing Sapporo's night view.

If you're confused about choosing restaurants in Susukino, which has many dining establishments, participating in a guided tour is also recommended. This tour takes you to three carefully selected izakaya guided by a local guide familiar with Susukino.

The charm of this tour, which visits izakaya bustling with locals, is that you can experience the local atmosphere above all. At izakaya with abundant reasonable menus, you can easily enjoy various types of sake and Hokkaido gourmet cuisine, which is also an attractive point.

From the second restaurant, the local guide will choose the perfect restaurant according to your preferences.

Sapporo Beer Garden is a classic beer hall that retains the atmosphere of the pioneering era. The brick building, designated as a Hokkaido Heritage site, is popular for its dignified retro charm.

The interior where you can enjoy Sapporo draft beer and Genghis Khan (grilled mutton) features a soaring ceiling space with an excellent sense of openness. At the bar counter, you can taste fresh draft beer shipped directly from the brewery, made with carefully selected Hokkaido water.

The museum, where you can learn about Sapporo Beer's history, also offers premium tours with dedicated guides and tastings where you can sample beer from the company's founding days. If you're a fan of Japanese beer, definitely give it a try!

Moerenuma Park

020620251603_image22.jpg

"Moerenuma Park," which opened in 2005, is a new type of park where nature and art are fused together. It was designed with the concept of "making the entire area one sculptural work."

On the spacious grounds, which were transformed from what was originally a waste disposal site, you can enjoy the various beauties of the four seasons throughout the year.

My recommended highlight is the "Glass Pyramid." Affectionately known as "HIDAMARI," it has become the symbol of the park. Because it's entirely made of glass, the colors of the changing outdoor scenery are reflected in the building according to each season, making it appear as if it's integrated with the park itself.

Please enjoy the art that stands amidst Hokkaido's natural beauty.

Hokkaido Jingu

020620251603_image4.png

Adjacent to Maruyama Park, Hokkaido Jingu enshrines deities that protect and bring prosperity to the land, and has a history that traces back to the pioneering era. It's also said to be a place where the energy of the surrounding mountains converges, making it popular as a power spot. It's believed to bring benefits such as family safety and success in love.

Another attractive feature is that you can enjoy rich nature on the vast grounds of 180,000 square meters. Various wild birds inhabit the area, and many people visit to enjoy birdwatching. The spring season is also recommended, when cherry blossoms and plum blossoms reach their peak almost simultaneously.

If you want to visit a prestigious Sapporo landmark with historical significance, definitely go check it out.

AOAO SAPPORO

020620251603_image21.png
Source:Official website

"AOAO SAPPORO," which opened in 2023, is an urban aquarium located in a complex building on Tanuki-koji Street. Its concept is "Wonder of Life - Making the Invisible Visible."

What makes this aquarium unique is that each floor has its own theme, creating different worlds.

4F "CONNECT": Exhibitions related to the care and research of aquarium creatures - the behind-the-scenes world of the aquarium
5F "SCOPE": A fantastical world that utilizes the characteristics of living creatures
6F "COMMONS": A world where the aquarium's popular contents are gathered

On the 6F floor, there are areas where you can see jellyfish swimming gracefully in tanks and penguins actively moving up close. There's also a recommended new-sensation area using digital art that makes it appear as if fish approach where people walk.

JR Tower Observatory T38

020620251603_image28.jpg

"JR Tower Observatory T38" is a complex tower directly connected to Sapporo Station. On the top 38th floor, there's an observation deck at 160 meters above ground, boasting the highest elevation in Hokkaido. The attractive feature is that you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Sapporo city and various scenic views depending on the time of day and season.

At the cafe on the observation floor, you can taste drinks made with Hokkaido specialties such as Yubari melon and haskap berries. My recommendation is the evening hours when you can enjoy craft beer and wine. In addition to Hokkaido cheese platters and smoked salmon, you can also have full meals such as scallop and snow crab doria.

This is a recommended spot for those who want to elegantly enjoy Sapporo's scenery.
