Sapporo Events 2026: Your Ultimate Guide to Festivals, Culture & Illumination Highlights

Event2025 Published: Dec 24, 2025

Sapporo is one of my favorite cities, and whenever I want to experience snow activities, bar hopping, hiking, or various other adventures, Sapporo always comes to mind as a top destination.

However, as I've always struggled with myself, there are so many tourist attractions around Sapporo that no amount of time would be enough to enjoy them all. For those who want to explore Sapporo tourism efficiently and deeply, I recommend tours guided by locals.

In fact, after participating in Magical Trip's Sapporo Bar Hopping Food Tour, I was able to discover the true charm of Sapporo, a city I had visited many times before. I was so impressed by the high quality that I regretted not participating sooner.

While all of Magical Trip's tours in other locations are attractive and allow you to enjoy tourist destinations as if you were a local, I especially recommend the Tokyo Bar Hopping Night Tour in Shinjuku.

The quality is so high that it has won TripAdvisor's Best of the Best award for two consecutive years, 2024 and 2025.

If you want to fully enjoy the tourist-filled streets of Sapporo or the bustling district of Shinjuku, known as the largest entertainment district in the East, I highly encourage you to try a Magical Trip tour at least once.

Introduction

Sapporo is the largest city in Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost region. With approximately 2 million residents, it boasts the fourth-largest population in Japan.

Sapporo city's streetscape features many historic buildings that preserve its rich history, creating beautiful urban scenery. The suburban areas are surrounded by vast natural landscapes, making it a city where urban life and nature harmoniously coexist.

Since Sapporo is located in northern Japan, temperatures are lower compared to Honshu regions like Tokyo, allowing visitors to experience Hokkaido's unique seasonal characteristics. Throughout the year, various events are held in Sapporo to match each season.

This article introduces the notable Sapporo Event 2026 attractions, highlights, basic information, event schedules, and access information to venues.

Sapporo Event 2026: New Year and Winter Events

Sapporo's winter brings harsh cold and snowy landscapes, but the crisp air and sparkling snow create a magical atmosphere. At night, enchanting illumination events transform the city, making it the perfect place to welcome the new year in a special way.

Below, we introduce notable events by month. Please check each monthly event article for details such as access information.

Notable Sapporo Event 2026 in January

January marks the beginning of the year and features many festive events celebrating the new year. If you're spending the New Year holidays in Sapporo, a visit to a historic shrine for hatsumode is a must.

Beyond hatsumode, you can also enjoy winter-exclusive illuminations, so be sure to check out the events below.

Hatsumode

Hatsumode

Hatsumode (the first shrine visit of the New Year) is an important Japanese annual tradition where people visit shrines and temples to pray for happiness and good health in the coming year.

This custom of welcoming the gods has been passed down through generations, with families and friends visiting together to refresh their spirits and start the new year with a renewed sense of purpose.

When it comes to hatsumode in Sapporo, Hokkaido Jingu Shrine is an essential destination.

After walking through the snowy paths of Maruyama Park and passing under the torii gate, you offer your New Year wishes at the main hall with the ritual of "two bows, two claps, one bow."

When I visited, clapping my hands in the cold air, the sound echoed through the quiet forest and gave me a feeling of renewed focus.

Warming up with amazake (sweet fermented rice drink) from the food stalls after the visit has become my personal hatsumode tradition at Hokkaido Jingu Shrine.

Each venue features illumination objects with different concepts, and the contrast between snow and light creates what feels like a winter art gallery.

I tried snow tubing myself. It was a little scary at first, but once I started sliding, the wind and scenery felt incredibly refreshing.

When I visited, I was so captivated by the sight of flames and illuminated animals floating in the quiet valley that I was left speechless.

This is a rare event where you can experience the warmth of candles and fantastical illuminations all at once.

At night, colorful lighting transforms the ice walls and caves into a fantastical space.

The candle-lit floating balls on the canal were so beautiful that I couldn't help but press the shutter countless times.

Shiroi Koibito Park Sweet Illumination 2025 "Blooming Snow Fantasy" is a winter event where the entire sweets-themed park is adorned with lights and sounds.

Under the theme of "Flowers of Light Blooming in the Snow," the night garden is wrapped in colorful lights.

There are also lighting shows where colors change to music, making it enjoyable just walking around taking photos.

During this period, I ate the limited-edition sweet "Shiroi Koibito Nama Chocolate Sand."

The combination of buttery, crisp langue de chat cookies and smooth, rich raw chocolate was exquisite.

Notable Sapporo Events in April 2026

In April, cherry blossoms reach full bloom at many spots in Sapporo, making it a season where you can fully feel the arrival of spring. You can leisurely stroll while enjoying cherry blossom viewing, participate in seasonal food stalls and events, and enjoy moments unique to spring.

Additionally, you can enjoy Golden Week (April 29 - May 5 in 2026), so please check below.

Cherry Blossom Viewing

Cherry Blossom Viewing

For Hokkaido's cherry blossoms in 2026, if following the typical pattern, the viewing period is estimated to be late April to early May for southern and central Hokkaido, and early to mid-May for northern and eastern Hokkaido.

Cherry blossom viewing in Sapporo is a special experience where you can feel spring arriving all at once after enduring the long winter.

The sight of soft pink cherry blossoms spreading across the city in the clear air after the snow melts has a "northern spring" atmosphere that's slightly different from mainland Japan.

One representative spot is Maruyama Park.

Adjacent to Hokkaido Jingu Shrine, you can often see locals enjoying picnics under the cherry tree-lined paths along with their shrine visits.

If you visit Sapporo during the viewing season, I recommend preparing a bento lunch and enjoying cherry blossom viewing unique to the northern region.

Main Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots:
Maruyama Park

Address: 3 Miyagaoka, Chuo-ku, Sapporo
Access: 5-minute walk from Exit 3 of Maruyama Koen Station on the Tozai Subway Line
Website: https://maruyamapark.jp/

Moerenuma Park
Address: 1-1 Moerenuma Park, Higashi-ku, Sapporo
Access: Get off at Kanjo-dori Higashi Station on the subway, take Chuo Bus Higashi 69/79, and walk 10 minutes from "Moere Park East Entrance"
Website: https://moerenumapark.jp/

Nakajima Park
Address: 1 Nakajima Park, Chuo-ku, Sapporo
Access: Right outside Exit 1 or 3 of Nakajima Koen Station on the Namboku Subway Line / Right outside Exit 1 or 2 of Horohirabashi Station on the Namboku Subway Line

Hiraoka Plum Blossom Festival

Hiraoka Plum Blossom Festival
Source:Google Maps

The Hiraoka Plum Blossom Festival is a spring tradition Sapporo event 2026 visitors can enjoy, held at Hiraoka Park, known as a famous plum blossom spot, timed to coincide with the plum blossom season.

The plum grove with over 1,200 plum trees bursts into bloom all at once with white and pink flowers, enveloping visitors in a subtle fragrance.

From the small hill within the park, you can get a panoramic view of the entire plum grove, making it an excellent photo spot.

Special shops selling plum-themed products also appear within the park.

My recommendation is the "plum soft-serve ice cream," which is so popular that lines form every year.

The moment it touches your tongue, the plum fragrance gently spreads, allowing you to feel the arrival of spring through taste as well.

This event is recommended for those who want to feel "the arrival of spring" a bit earlier than cherry blossoms.

<Information>
Date: Late April - Early May 2026
Access: Take bus No. 111 from Shin-Sapporo Station Bus Terminal on the Tozai Subway Line, get off at "Hiraoka 6-jo 4-chome," and walk 5 minutes

Hokkaido Jingisukan Festival 2026

Hokkaido Jingisukan Festival 2026 is a must-visit gourmet event for meat lovers, where you can sample and compare over 50 varieties of jingisukan (grilled lamb barbecue) from across Hokkaido.

Visitors purchase their preferred jingisukan with tickets and enjoy grilling the meat at their own tables around a hot pot.

I also attended this event and enjoyed comparing different jingisukan dishes with friends.

Since the seasonings and meat quality differ by region, the tasting experience was lively with comments like "I love the sauce from this town" or "This restaurant's lamb is the most tender!"

The venue also has beer and drink booths, making it a uniquely Sapporo gourmet festival where you can fully enjoy local food in an open-air outdoor space.

While Honshu's summer is characterized by high humidity and many extremely hot days exceeding 30°C (86°F), Sapporo's summer maintains comfortable temperatures between 20°C-25°C (68°F-77°F) with pleasant weather. The low humidity creates a dry climate, attracting many tourists from across Japan seeking relief from the heat.

During the summer season when many tourists visit, numerous large-scale events are held for both locals and visitors to enjoy. Here we introduce the Sapporo Event 2026 summer festivals. Please check individual event articles for specific dates and access information.

Around the main venue, sales of "Doujinshi" (derivative work manga by fans) and exhibitions of creations such as cosplay and models are held. On stage, performances by cosplayers are held, and the venue is bustling with anime characters. The exhibition of "Itasha" (cars with anime characters printed on them) is content that even I, a car enthusiast, look forward to, and you can enjoy Japanese Otaku culture to the fullest.

Takino Fireworks

Speaking of Japan's summer traditions, it's fireworks. In Japan, when summer arrives, fireworks festivals are held nationwide. "Takino fireworks festival" is the earliest summer fireworks held in Sapporo city, with 3,000 fireworks coloring the night sky.

In the park surrounded by magnificent nature, you can enjoy fireworks in an open environment that you can't experience in the city. I especially recommend the camp site seats. After enjoying the fireworks, you can stay overnight, so you can spend a dream-like time enjoying both camping and fireworks simultaneously. They also rent out tents and other equipment necessary for camping, so you can enjoy it without worrying about luggage even while traveling.

During the day, a meat festival is also held where you can enjoy exquisite local meat dishes, so please enjoy it together!

Hokkai Soran Festival

Hokkai Soran Festival

The unique word "Soran" is a chant used during herring net fishing. When going out to fish, they would pull up the nets powerfully with the spirit of "Soran! Soran!" This type of herring net fishing has been practiced since around 1706.

In 1935, a song was created based on the Soran chant, and it is still loved today as "Soranbushi," a folk song representing Hokkaido. It is sung together with dance choreography resembling net fishing, with impressive dynamic movements that convey strength.

The port town of Yoichi, where the "Hokkai Soran festival" is held, is also known as the birthplace of Soranbushi. The Soran dance performed in this authentic location is full of power. This is a must-see Sapporo Event 2026 for those who want to see traditional cool Japanese dance.

Notable Events in Sapporo for August 2026

August is the hottest season in Japan. While Tokyo experiences scorching days of 35℃ (95℉), Sapporo maintains a comfortable average temperature of 24℃ (75℉).

August is the season when fireworks events are held most frequently throughout the year. It's also characterized by many events where you can enjoy the atmosphere of traditional Japanese Summer festivals, including "Ennichi" with food stalls lined up and "Bon Dance."

Susukino Festival

"Susukino" is Sapporo city's pleasure quarter. It's one of Japan's largest pleasure quarters, comparable to Tokyo's Kabukicho, where you can enjoy deep nightlife.

Susukino holds the Susukino festival every August. This is a traditional festival representing Sapporo that has continued since 1965. More than 100 food stalls line the streets, and citizens perform Japanese taiko drums and dance performances.

The festival's main highlight is the parade of "Oiran," prostitutes who were active during the Edo era. Even as a Japanese person, I rarely get to see Oiran dressed in gorgeous traditional costumes. The distinctive graceful gestures and walking style unique to Oiran are also must-sees.

Nakajima Park is a park with rich natural scenery despite being located in central Sapporo. The park's nature and the surrounding urban buildings create an interesting contrasting landscape, and it's also famous for its vivid autumn foliage.

When the illuminations light up, the ginkgo tree-lined path at the park entrance shines brightly in welcome. At Shobu Pond within the park, you can enjoy strolling while viewing the water surface reflecting both the illumination lights and the red and yellow autumn leaves.

Going further, you'll see the Japanese garden. Here, new light and sound presentations are scheduled to begin this year. The collaboration between traditional Japanese aesthetics and illuminations seems to be attracting attention.

Additionally, at Hoheikan, a Western-style building constructed by the government as a hotel during the Meiji era, a "Geigi Café" will open. Real geiko will serve as staff and perform Japanese dance. Food trucks and oshiruko (sweet red bean soup) corners will also be available, so please enjoy autumn flavors along with the illuminations.

In Japan, it's said that "autumn nights are long" (aki no yonaga), and the pleasant autumn nights that arrive after summer's heat are considered wonderful. Let's slowly stroll through the illuminated Nakajima Park and enjoy these "long nights."

Sapporo Factory is a shopping mall with vast grounds. Built on the site of a former Sapporo Beer factory, it's recommended not only for shopping and dining but also for exploring the building's interior, including the Atrium and brick-built Beer Brewery.

Shiroi Koibito Park is a complex facility attached to the factory that produces "Shiroi Koibito," Hokkaido's representative souvenir.

At the facility, you can enjoy a full day with factory tours, confectionery-making workshops, and museum visits. Illuminations are held every year from mid-November. There are plenty of highlights, including large bell monuments and Christmas trees. Foods using chocolate that can only be enjoyed during the illumination season are also must-sees.

Shiroi Koibito is a cookie similar to langue de chat, and it's one of my favorite sweets. Collaborative sweets like parfaits using Shiroi Koibito can only be eaten here, so sweets lovers should definitely visit this unique Sapporo Event 2026 experience.

When December arrives, Sapporo city is enveloped in a Christmas mood, creating romantic cityscapes. From late November, Sapporo city is also decorated with beautiful illuminations, and when night falls, gorgeous lights enliven the city.

In Sapporo city, you can enjoy illuminations at various spots, centered around the area from the station to Odori. Among them, the "Snow Fantasia" installed at Odori, which evokes the image of a snow tunnel, and the "Winter Blossoms" created to represent Hokkaido's symbols - lily of the valley and rugosa rose - are my favorite spots that offer a dreamlike world experience. There are so many other highlights that I cannot write them all, so please walk through the city and enjoy nighttime strolling!

Hokkaido Jingu is a shrine established in 1869 with over 150 years of history, and it is the largest shrine in Sapporo city. The magnificent shrine building is impressive and popular as a spot where you can feel the authentic Japanese atmosphere.

During the New Year period, many worshippers visit and create a lively atmosphere. While shrines are usually very quiet at night, the late night hours from December 31st to January 1st see the most visitors coming to pray. Worshippers are served "Omiki," sacred sake offered to the gods, allowing you to feel the festive New Year atmosphere.

New Year worship can involve waiting in line for over 2 hours, so we recommend planning your schedule with plenty of time. Please visit for New Year prayers and welcome a great start to the year.
