2025 Cherry Blossom Forecast: Blooming Period and Peak Viewing Times

City Bloom (forecast) Full bloom (forecast)
Sapporo Late April (Around 23) Late April (Around 27)

Here we would like to forecast the beginning of cherry blossom coloring and peak viewing times for 2026's sakura season.

Since Sapporo is located in the northern part of Japan, the beginning of cherry blossom coloring arrives the latest in the country. In 2025, the coloring began on April 23rd, which was 8 days earlier than average and 5 days later than the previous year. The peak viewing period was April 27th, which was 9 days earlier than average and 3 days later than the previous year. 2025 had higher temperatures than average from March to April, resulting in earlier coloring.

Due to the influence of recent global warming, 2026 is also likely to have a mild winter, so we predict that the Sapporo Cherry Blossom 2025 season's sakura will begin coloring around April 23rd and reach peak viewing around April 27th.

Sapporo's Classic Cherry Blossom Spots! 10 Must-Visit Sakura Destinations

Here we will introduce 10 classic cherry blossom spots in Sapporo that you absolutely must visit. The collaboration between the attractions' highlights and the sakura is truly spectacular and a must-see!

Maruyama Park

Maruyama Park is a park adjacent to various tourist spots including Hokkaido Jingu, Maruyama Zoo, and the Maruyama primeval forest, which is designated as a natural monument. The nature-rich park is home to many animals and plants, and while strolling, you'll likely encounter adorable squirrels and wild birds.

The park has approximately 160 cherry trees planted, including Ezo-yama-zakura and Someiyoshino varieties. BBQ grill rentals begin with the cherry blossom blooming, and the attractive point is that you can enjoy hanami while having a BBQ. I also rented a BBQ grill and enjoyed an elegant barbecue with friends while gazing at the full-bloom sakura. Since it gets crowded with many people on weekends, I recommend weekdays for those who want to enjoy hanami leisurely.

Cherry blossom coloring begins in late April, with peak viewing in early May.

Moerenuma Park

Moerenuma Park was designed by world-famous sculptor Isamu Noguchi on the site of a former waste treatment facility, with the theme of "making the entire area one sculptural work."

My recommended sakura spot is the "Cherry Blossom Forest." The "Cherry Blossom Forest" has approximately 1,600 cherry trees and 126 playground equipment pieces designed by Isamu Noguchi, making it popular for allowing children to play while adults enjoy hanami. The colorful and original playground equipment looks like art pieces displayed in a museum, and I was able to experience the fusion of nature and art while viewing the sakura through the equipment.

Since picturesque scenery spreads from every angle, try capturing photos that you'll want to show off to friends and family.

Cherry blossom coloring begins in late April, with peak viewing from early to mid-May.

Hokkaido Jingu

Hokkaido Jingu is the chief Shinto shrine of Hokkaido (a shrine that protects the entire land), founded in 1869, and is famous for attracting worshippers from all over the country. The vast grounds are rich in nature and home to many wild birds, making it also known as a birdwatching destination.

The grounds have approximately 1,000 cherry trees planted, including Ezo-yama-zakura, Someiyoshino, and Yae-zakura varieties, and it has been popular as a hanami spot since the Meiji era. It's also a nationally rare spot where you can see cherry blossoms and plum blossoms blooming simultaneously, attracting many tourists who come to see this collaboration of sakura and plum. Food stalls also open during the cherry blossom season, so why not enjoy hanami while eating your way around?

Cherry blossom coloring begins in late April, with peak viewing in early May.

Nakajima Park

Nakajima Park is certified as one of Japan's "100 Best Urban Parks" and is Sapporo's largest park within the city. Despite being located in central Sapporo, a major city, you can feel close to nature, making it beloved as a place of relaxation for locals. Highlights include the "Iris Pond," which is said to be the origin of Nakajima Park, and the nationally important cultural properties "Hoheikan" and "Hassoan," making it popular with tourists as well.

The park has approximately 400 various cherry trees planted, including Ezo-yama-zakura, Someiyoshino, and Shidare-zakura varieties, allowing you to enjoy hanami for an extended period. My recommended sakura spot is the Someiyoshino around "Hoheikan." The pink of the sakura overlaying the beautiful white and light blue contrasting building creates breathtaking scenery.

Cherry blossom coloring begins from late April to early May, with peak viewing from early to late May.

Odori Park

Odori Park is an urban park located in the heart of Sapporo, stretching approximately 1.5km from east to west from Odori Nishi 1-chome to 12-chome. The park features flower beds that bloom with seasonal flowers throughout the four seasons and sculptural artworks, and hosts numerous events that enliven the city, making it always bustling with people.

What you should definitely see in the park are the lilacs that have been beloved by locals for a long time. Lilacs are famous as Sapporo's official tree, and when the season arrives to feel early summer, approximately 400 lilac trees bloom magnificently in Odori Park. Around the time lilacs begin to bloom, the Lilac Festival is also held, and the entire city becomes colored in lilac.

The festival features various events such as concerts, stamp rallies, and food corners, so you can enjoy a full day of entertainment.

The lilacs begin to show color in early May, with the best viewing period in mid-May.

We also recommend visiting the Hokkaido Prefectural Government Red Brick Building (former main building)

If you're visiting Odori Park, we also recommend visiting the Hokkaido Prefectural Government Red Brick Building (former main building) as well.

The Hokkaido Prefectural Government Red Brick Building, built in 1888, features American-style Neo-Baroque architecture and led Hokkaido's government for about 80 years. The retro atmosphere, red brick, and beautiful gardens are renowned for being photogenic, making it a popular photo spot in Sapporo.

On the grounds, approximately 40 trees of early-blooming Kasumi cherry and late-blooming Yaezakura are planted, allowing you to enjoy cherry blossom viewing throughout May. I visited when the late-blooming Yaezakura were in full bloom. The collaboration between the cherry blossoms, with their deep pink presence, and the building was picture-perfect beautiful, making me stop and gaze in admiration.

This is recommended for those who want to enjoy the scenery of historic buildings and cherry blossoms.

The cherry blossoms begin to show color from early to mid-May, with the best viewing period from mid to late May.

Makomanai Park

Makomanai Park served as the main venue for the Sapporo Olympics and boasts rich nature with over 50,000 natural trees and 13,200 planted trees, including ancient trees over 135 years old.

The park has approximately 1,000 Ezoyamazakura and Yaezakura trees with different blooming periods planted throughout, allowing you to enjoy cherry blossoms for about a month. The recommended cherry blossom spot is the cherry tree-lined avenue along Memorial Tree Street. The contrast between the deep pink Yaezakura planted along the street and the fresh green foliage is magnificent, and I was captivated by the scenery that makes you feel the arrival of spring.

There are about six cherry blossom spots, so why not enjoy cherry blossom viewing while leisurely strolling through the park?

The cherry blossoms begin to show color in early May, with the best viewing period in mid-May.

Asahiyama Memorial Park

Asahiyama Memorial Park opened in 1970 to commemorate Sapporo's 100th anniversary. From the observation deck, you can see a grand panorama not only of Sapporo city but also the Ishikari Plain and the Sea of Japan.

The park has approximately 3,500 cherry trees planted, including Ezoyamazakura and Yaezakura, allowing you to enjoy cherry blossom viewing with Sapporo's cityscape as a backdrop. The facilities are also well-equipped with playground equipment areas, children's plazas, and a rest house, making it popular for families to fully enjoy the cherry blossoms. The rest house offers light meals such as fried chicken, potatoes, donuts, and soft serve ice cream, so it's also recommended to stroll while eating.

The cherry blossoms begin to show color in late April, with the best viewing period from early to mid-May.

Kanchi Doboku Research Institute

The Kanchi Doboku Research Institute conducts surveys, tests, and research related to Hokkaido's development, supporting life in Hokkaido. The research institute became a cherry blossom viewing spot in 1984 when employees wished to "plant plants that everyone can enjoy for a long time to beautify the grounds." The Chidori cherry trees planted along the Seishin River now number about 170 and are open to the public only during cherry blossom season.

Chishima cherry blossoms are characterized by changing color from pink when they begin blooming to white when in full bloom. I visited just before full bloom and enjoyed the elegant scenery created by the cherry blossoms with their wonderful pink and white gradation and the river. Since this is a hidden cherry blossom viewing spot, it's recommended for those who want to view cherry blossoms at a spot known only to those in the know.

The cherry blossoms begin to show color in mid-April, with the best viewing period in late April.

Hiraoka Tree Art Center

Hiraoka Tree Art Center opened in 1984 as a specimen garden for garden trees suitable for northern regions. The highlights include well-maintained Japanese and Western gardens, and it's renowned for allowing visitors to enjoy seasonal flowers and trees throughout the four seasons.

Seven varieties of cherry trees are planted in the park, including Ezoyamazakura and Yaezakura, offering different ways to enjoy them according to their respective blooming periods. My recommendation is the "Yaezakura Tunnel" where Yaezakura are arranged on both sides of the path. I visited when the blossoms had just begun to fall after full bloom. The cherry blossom petals scattered under the tunnel looked like a pink carpet, and while walking through the tunnel, I could experience the sensation of wandering into another dimension. The cherry blossoms in full bloom are wonderful, but the beginning of the falling petals also has charm and is recommended.

The cherry blossoms begin to show color from mid to late April, with the best viewing period from early to late May.

Two Spots Away from Central Sapporo Where You Can Leisurely Enjoy Cherry Blossoms

Here we introduce two spots away from Sapporo's central area where you can leisurely enjoy cherry blossoms. Both locations are rich in nature where you can fully appreciate "Ezo Yamazakura" (Yezo Mountain Cherry), which represents Hokkaido's signature sakura species.

Senkoen Garden

Senkoen is a park built on the former estate site of Sekiya Magozaemon, who contributed to the development of Ebetsu City, and is designated as a municipal cultural property. This historic park opened in 1981 and has long been beloved as a place of relaxation for local residents.

Among the cherry trees in the garden, the most popular is the Ezo Yamazakura near the entrance. This cherry tree is tall and blooms with flowers covering its entire branches, and I was overwhelmed by its commanding presence.

Besides Ezo Yamazakura, you can also see impressive trees and flowers such as Kita Kobushi (designated as Ebetsu City's preserved forest and famous as the city's oldest and largest tree), Mizubashō (skunk cabbage), and Ezo Engosaku. Please take a stroll through the beautifully maintained garden while flower viewing.

Cherry blossoms begin to show color in late April, with peak viewing from early to mid-May.

Meisui Community Park

Source:Google Maps

Meisui Community Park was created in 1989 to commemorate the selection of Naibetsu River spring water as one of Japan's "100 Famous Waters." The highlights include spots where you can feel close to the Naibetsu River, such as a recreation of the Naibetsu River spring water outlet, wall fountains where water cascades down, and well-maintained paths for strolling along the Naibetsu River.

About 20 Ezo Yamazakura trees are planted throughout the park. Although the number of cherry trees isn't large, I was able to enjoy refreshing cherry blossom viewing alongside the murmuring water and crystal-clear streams. You can savor the cherry blossoms in a calm atmosphere that you can't experience at other parks.

Cherry blossoms begin to show color in late April, with peak viewing from early to mid-May.

When Visiting Sapporo in Spring, Enjoy Exquisite Food with Local Guidance

When visiting Sapporo in spring for Sapporo Cherry Blossom 2025, why not also enjoy exquisite food with local guidance? The Sapporo Bar Hopping Food Tour takes you to three izakayas and bars recommended by knowledgeable guides, centered around Susukino Station, known for its entertainment district.

At each establishment, you can fully enjoy dishes made with fresh local ingredients and local sake. Seafood is especially a Hokkaido specialty, so be sure to indulge in exceptional seafood cuisine! The tour concludes with a visit to either a ramen shop or parfait shop. While ramen shops are the standard way to end a night of drinking in Japan, Hokkaido has established a "closing parfait" culture, so please try challenging yourself with a parfait too. You're guaranteed to smile at the sweet treat after drinking!

Beyond Sapporo, Hokkaido Has Many Beautiful Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots!

Beyond Sapporo, Hokkaido has numerous spots where you can enjoy beautiful cherry blossoms. Cherry blossoms viewed from observation decks or alongside historical buildings have a special charm, and tourist numbers increase even more during cherry blossom season.

From here, we'll introduce carefully selected locations that are easily accessible from Sapporo by train or car.

Hakodate Area

Hakodate is located in southwestern Hokkaido and is famous for the Hokkaido Shinkansen line, ferry terminals, and cruise ship ports, currently known as Hokkaido's southern gateway. The night view from Mount Hakodate is recognized as one of the world's three major night views, and the seafood gourmet at Hakodate Morning Market is also popular, making it full of attractions.

From Sapporo to Hakodate, you can take JR's "Limited Express Hokuto" for about 3 hours and 50 minutes, highway bus for about 5 hours, or airplane for about 40 minutes.

Goryokaku Park

Goryokaku Park is a park containing Goryokaku, Japan's first Western-style fortress built during the Edo period for defending Ezo-chi (old name for Hokkaido). The star-shaped Goryokaku has historical value and is designated as a national special historic site.

The park has about 1,500 cherry trees planted, mainly Someiyoshino, and attracts many tourists every year when the cherry blossoms bloom. While strolling through the park and viewing the cherry blossoms up close is wonderful, I recommend viewing from the observation deck of Goryokaku Tower. The cherry blossoms coloring in a star shape along the fortress walls create a spectacular view that can only be seen here, and I was left speechless, gazing in wonder. This is recommended for those who want an impactful cherry blossom viewing experience.

Cherry blossoms begin to show color in late April, with peak viewing in early May.

Hakodate Park

Hakodate Park opened in 1879 and is a park extremely popular with families, featuring a mini amusement park, animal facilities, and a fountain plaza where you can play during summer. As one of the earliest urban parks created in Japan, it has been selected for "Japan's 100 Historical Parks" and "Northern Landscape Heritage" due to its preserved original appearance from that era.

The park is home to approximately 400 cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino varieties, and offers nighttime illumination during the blooming season. Food stalls selling gourmet treats and festival stalls with goldfish scooping and yo-yo fishing line up, creating an even more bustling atmosphere than usual. I enjoyed strolling around eating yakisoba and takoyaki while savoring the magical night cherry blossoms. With various recreational spots scattered throughout, this is highly recommended for families with children.

The cherry blossoms begin to show color in mid-April, with the best viewing period from late April to early May. For those planning their Sapporo Cherry Blossom 2025 trip, this makes an excellent addition to your Hokkaido itinerary.

Matsumae Park

Matsumae Park is known as the premier cherry blossom destination in southern Hokkaido and has been selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, boasting approximately 250 varieties and 10,000 cherry trees. The park also preserves historical sites including Matsumae Castle, temple district (an area where many temples were concentrated), and Matsumae Domain (the group that once governed Matsumae) residences, allowing visitors to enjoy a collaboration of cherry blossoms and history.

My recommended spot is the scenery of Matsumae Castle with the cherry blossoms. The pink cherry blossoms color the surroundings of the usually austere castle, creating a magnificent castle view unique to this season.

With such a rich variety of cherry blossom types, you can enjoy hanami for about a month from early-blooming to late-blooming varieties. There are also rare cherry blossom varieties, so please look for them while strolling! This destination perfectly complements any Sapporo Cherry Blossom 2025 adventure.

The cherry blossoms begin to show color from mid-April to mid-May, with the best viewing period from late April to late May.

Otaru Area

Otaru is a city in western Hokkaido where buildings from the Meiji and Taisho periods still exist, making it popular for its streetscape that evokes a sense of history. The city is surrounded by sea on one side and mountains on three sides, boasting naturally rich terrain. Along the Otaru Canal, retro stone warehouses line up, and scenic walks and canal cruises are popular with tourists.

From Sapporo to Otaru, it takes about 33-50 minutes by rapid airport train, 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes by express bus, and about 30 minutes to 1 hour by car.

Temiya Park

Temiya Park is located on a hill in the northern part of Otaru City. In spring, cherry blossoms and azaleas bloom in abundance, while autumn offers autumn leaves and chestnut picking. It is the fourth oldest among the urban parks remaining in Hokkaido and has been certified as "Northern Landscape Heritage."

The park is home to approximately 700 cherry trees of various types including Ezo Yama Sakura, Somei Yoshino, and Yae Zakura. From the hill, you can enjoy hanami while taking in views of Otaru Port and the Otaru cityscape. Faced with the spectacular view where cherry blossom pink reflects against the blue of the sea, I was instantly captivated. This is recommended for those who want to enjoy cherry blossoms alongside magnificent nature. When planning your Sapporo Cherry Blossom 2025 journey, consider extending your trip to include this breathtaking location.

The cherry blossoms begin to show color in late April, with the best viewing period from early to mid-May.

Otaru Park

Otaru Park is the most historic park in Otaru, having opened in 1893. Along with public facilities used by locals, it features tourist attractions scattered throughout, including a Japanese garden and a stone monument dedicated to the famous poet Ishikawa Takuboku. The park is also renowned for its rich natural environment, boasting not only cherry blossoms but also azaleas, wisteria, chestnuts, oaks, and white birch trees.

Approximately 650 cherry blossom trees are planted throughout the park, including Ezo mountain cherry, Someiyoshino, and double-flowered cherry varieties. The park is divided into six major sections, and the official website features a guide map indicating the rare cherry blossom varieties planted in each area. Be sure to use this guide map to enjoy exploring the differences between various cherry blossom types!

Tenguzakura Observatory

Tenguzakura Observatory is one of five observation decks located at the Tenguyama Ropeway summit station, offering magnificent views of Otaru city and the Sea of Japan. Since opening in 2015, it has attracted many visitors seeking spectacular scenery.

The highlight here is the single cherry tree called "Tengu Sakura," which is over 100 years old. "Tengu Sakura" is said to bloom latest in Otaru, and when in full bloom, it appears heart-shaped. We recommend photographing this heart-shaped cherry blossom alongside the night view, which is one of Hokkaido's three major night views, to capture a romantic shot.

The observatory features tables and chairs, so why not relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery at your leisure?

The cherry blossoms begin to show color in late April, with the best viewing period in early May.

Asahikawa Area

Asahikawa is a city located almost in the center of Hokkaido, featuring scattered tourist attractions including Asahiyama Zoo (which houses polar bears and penguins), Japan's largest national park "Daisetsuzan National Park," and the scenic Ueno Farm garden.

The city is also famous for its rich-flavored Asahikawa ramen. Asahikawa is one of the popular tourist destinations as it offers a well-balanced mix of food, culture, and nature attractions.

From Sapporo to Asahikawa, it takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes by JR "Limited Express Kamui" or "Limited Express Lilac," about 2 to 2.5 hours by highway bus, or around 1.5 hours by car.

Asahiyama Park

Asahiyama Park opened as an urban park in 1963 (Showa 38) and spreads across the foothills of Mount Asahi at an elevation of 295 meters.

The park features approximately 3,500 Ezo mountain cherry trees, and when in full bloom, the entire area is painted pink. Coinciding with the cherry blossom season, the "Asahiyama Night Cherry Blossom Festival" is held, where illuminated cherry blossoms can be enjoyed from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. I have participated in this festival myself and enjoyed the night cherry blossoms while watching stage events and dining from food trucks. The freshly made sausages, which are popular every year, had a juicy flavor and were delicious, so I highly recommend them.

Since it's adjacent to the popular tourist destination Asahiyama Zoo, why not visit both attractions together?

The cherry blossoms begin to show color in mid-April, with the best viewing period from late April to early May.

Kaguraoka Park is a comprehensive park where you can enjoy various activities throughout the seasons - cherry blossom viewing in spring, camping and BBQ in summer, autumn foliage in fall, and cross-country skiing in winter. Since opening in 1914 (Taisho 3), it has been beloved by locals as a place where you can experience nature up close.

About 500 Ezo mountain cherry trees are planted throughout the park, beautifully decorating the park with color. Since it's a nature-rich park, while enjoying cherry blossom viewing and listening to bird songs, you might encounter squirrels, foxes, and other wildlife! During the cherry blossom season, fire usage is specially permitted in the park, making it an attractive feature that you can enjoy BBQ and grilled meat with friends and family while admiring the cherry blossoms.
