Best Breakfast in Osaka 2026: Top Spots, Cafes & Morning Itineraries
I visited Osaka four times in 2024 for tourism research. The main reason for significantly updating this article is to introduce early morning spots I discovered during those visits.
This update incorporates the latest information and upgrades the article to the 2026 version.
Another reason is the growing popularity of tours showcasing Osaka's traditions and food culture among tourists. Magical Trip's tours, where local guides show visitors beloved local spots, have become particularly popular.
Due to this popularity, their tour was selected as "Best of the Best" (No. 1 tour designation) among all Tripadvisor tours in 2024.

You'll regret leaving Osaka without fully experiencing its signature local cuisine. The Osaka Local Foodie Tour in Dotonbori and Shinsekai lets you explore authentic Osaka dining spots with a local guide.
Additionally, Osaka is surrounded by top sake-producing regions like Nada and Fushimi, considered among Japan's top three. To fully experience Osaka, enjoy some sake on the Osaka Bar Hopping Night Tour in Namba.
After planning your morning to evening itinerary from the article, make sure to join a Magical Trip tour at night.

Osaka, the central city second only to Tokyo, is a major tourist destination representing western Japan. It is said that about 7% of Japan's population and about 10% of foreigners living in Japan are concentrated in Osaka. There are also many spots with nature in the city. In the less crowded morning hours, you can feel the crisp and refreshing air even in the middle of the city.

Why is morning sightseeing in Osaka recommended?
Osaka, being the center of economy and culture, attracts many visitors every year. In addition to domestic and international tourists, there are many students on school trips, and recently, all tourist spots are crowded with people.
That's why we recommend sightseeing in Osaka during the morning hours. Compared to daytime, there are fewer people, so you can enjoy sightseeing and photography at a relaxed pace. Especially for popular standard tourist spots, it's recommended to visit as early in the morning as possible to avoid crowds.

5 Best Breakfast Places (Local's Choice)

If you're looking for things to do in Osaka in the morning, starting your day with a great breakfast is the perfect plan. Here are five spots loved by locals.
Kuromon Market
A historic market affectionately known as "Osaka's Kitchen," where cafes and restaurants serving breakfast are gathered. You can grab light bites like seafood and sandwiches from the lively food stalls, or enjoy a breakfast menu at a retro-style cafe.
Osaka Kizu Wholesale Market
A lively market located near Daikokucho Station on the Midosuji Line. Many of the eateries open as early as 5:00 AM, making it a great place to enjoy market-fresh breakfast dishes like seafood rice bowls.
Onigiri Gorichan
Onigiri Gorichan is a specialty onigiri restaurant with multiple locations in the bustling Namba and Umeda areas. It's the perfect spot for anyone who wants to enjoy exceptional onigiri as their morning meal.
Onigiri Rice Balls at Musubiya
An onigiri shop located near Osaka Castle Park, one of Osaka's most iconic historic landmarks. It opens at 10:00 AM, so you can stop by before exploring the castle and enjoy your onigiri as a morning snack in the park.
Danshaku
A traditional kissaten (coffee shop) beloved by locals, offering affordable breakfast sets as part of their morning menu. Conveniently located just steps from JR Shin-Osaka Station, it's easy to access.
3 Best Morning Spots Beloved by Locals

Looking for more things to do in Osaka in the morning beyond eating? These three spots are favorites among locals for a peaceful early start to the day.
Osaka Castle Park
Osaka Castle Park is a vast park home to Osaka Castle, built in the 16th century, surrounded by lush nature. While the park is always bustling with locals and tourists, mornings are quieter, giving you the chance to stroll leisurely through the grounds or visit the castle tower at your own pace.
Osaka Tenmangu Shrine
Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is a revered shrine dedicated to the deity of learning and academics. While the area is normally busy with locals and students throughout the day, visiting in the morning allows you to experience the serene and sacred atmosphere in peace.
Nakanoshima Park
Nakanoshima Park is a beautiful park situated on a sandbar nestled between two rivers. It's a wonderful spot for a morning walk while taking in the riverside scenery of Osaka, a city often called the "City of Water." There are also plenty of cafes nearby where you can grab breakfast afterward.
Recommended Breakfast Spots in Osaka (Organized by Area)
For those looking for things to do in Osaka in the morning, starting the day with a great breakfast is one of the best ways to experience the city. Here are some top spots to enjoy a morning meal in Osaka.
Around Namba
Kuromon Market (9:30 AM - 6:00 PM)

The "Kuromon Market (Kuromon-ichiba)" in the center of Osaka City is a shopping street with about 150 shops. It offers a wide variety of food items including fish, meat, vegetables, fruits, Japanese sweets, Western confectioneries, and pickles, along with many restaurants. True to Osaka's nickname as the "city of kuidaore" (eat until you drop), you can thoroughly enjoy food hopping here.
My favorite is having breakfast at the fish shop "Fukahiro," which offers fresh seafood. There are seats at the back of the store where you can immediately eat the fish displayed at the storefront. You can even create your own rice bowl topped with fresh fish to your liking.
If you want to taste Western-style food, I recommend the egg sandwich at "Ibuki Coffee," a long-established cafe that has been in business for 76 years. It opens at 7 AM on weekdays and 6 AM on Sundays, so please drop by before your sightseeing!

Osaka Kizu Wholesale Market (From 5:00 AM)

If you're an early riser, the "Osaka Kizu Wholesale Market (Osaka-Kizu-oroshiuriichiba)" with about 300 years of history is also recommended. It's a popular tourist spot that combines a market, large supermarket, restaurant street, and bathing facilities. The market has about 130 shops, including 20 restaurants, where you can enjoy various genres of food such as takoyaki, sushi, and eel.
As someone who likes to indulge in local specialties while traveling, I chose "Mitsuwa Shokudo," where you can eat the Osaka specialty "nikumaki" (meat roll). The nikumaki, which wraps sweet and savory beef in a fluffy dashi-maki egg, is so delicious that you won't be able to stop eating white rice with it.
There are chairs and tables in the market, so it's also fun to buy a little from various shops and eat as you go!

maZe horie

For those who want to enjoy breakfast at a café around Namba, maZe horie is highly recommended. This wildly popular café features a stylish interior with a gray-toned color scheme, where you can savor high-quality breakfast dishes and beautifully crafted latte art.
The breakfast menu offers plate sets with salad, including toast, eggs benedict, and croissant sandwiches.
I ordered the "maZe Brunch Plate," a toast plate topped with a large egg. It came with a generous portion of salad that left me completely full — the sweet and tangy dressing on the salad in particular was absolutely outstanding.
maZe is also well known for its stunning, high-quality latte art featuring designs such as Pegasus and swans. You can make requests casually and easily. The café is extremely popular among international travelers, and the staff can communicate in English.
They will also kindly and warmly walk you through the wide variety of coffee options available, delivering a thoroughly satisfying experience. If you want to enjoy breakfast or brunch at a wonderful café in Osaka, maZe horie should be your first consideration.

West Wood Bakers

WEST WOOD BAKERS is a bakery café where you can enjoy delicious bread for breakfast. You can choose from a wide variety of simple, healthy breads made with natural yeast that bring out the natural flavor of the ingredients.
The breakfast menu includes several types of toast, pancakes, sandwich plate sets, and fruit granola, among others.
I ordered the "Bacon Egg Pancake." The pancake plate topped with two large slices of bacon had a perfect balance of sweetness and saltiness, and was incredibly filling.
The café has a limited number of eat-in seats to begin with, and it is very popular, so you may end up waiting about 30 minutes even in the morning. Going early — such as right when it opens at 9:00 AM — often means you can get in without waiting.

M&H COFFEE is a stylish café located in Shinsaibashi. With walls in black and gray tones and an American vintage-style interior that incorporates brick detailing, this charming spot serves breakfast starting from 8:30 in the morning.
At M&H COFFEE, you can enjoy a wide variety of bagel sandwiches, including avocado & salmon and bacon egg options. Their freshly baked bagels are highly acclaimed, and the vegetables and eggs packed inside are wonderfully hearty.
You can spend a relaxing morning here while enjoying the chic interior details — from the red chair at the entrance to the records hung on the ceiling inside the café.
The shop also sells cute accessories and miscellaneous goods. It is frequented by international visitors, and the staff can communicate in English.

bills Osaka

"bills Osaka," directly connected to Osaka Station, is a Sydney-originated restaurant famous for being the "king of breakfast." The Osaka branch uses Japanese ingredients like tofu and tuna, allowing you to enjoy a uniquely Japanese "bills" experience.
The signature morning menu item is the Full Aussie Breakfast. It's perfect in both nutrition and volume, with scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, roasted tomatoes, garlic mushrooms, and toast. The course that adds ricotta pancakes and homemade granola is recommended for sharing with everyone.
As someone who enjoys pairing alcohol with breakfast as a travel pleasure, I chose bills' special spicy Bloody Mary as an aperitif. With the acidity of tomatoes and the aroma of spices, it has a refreshing taste perfect for the morning. Please give it a try!

Onigiri Gorichan

For those who want to enjoy onigiri (rice balls) — a beloved traditional Japanese food — for breakfast, Onigiri Gorichan is the perfect spot.
This popular onigiri specialty shop in Osaka offers high-quality onigiri at reasonable prices.
In the Umeda area, there is a location near Nakazaki subway station, as well as stores near Shinsaibashi Station and Nankai Namba Station. Both eat-in and takeout options are available starting from 7:00 AM.
Fillings range from plum and seafood options such as salmon and cod roe, to kimchi and cheese, among others. You can choose a base filling and then add your own extra toppings. The onigiri are on the larger side, with a beautifully soft rice texture and a well-balanced ratio of filling to rice.
My personal recommendation is the most popular combination of salmon roe and salmon. There are so many combinations to try, so enjoy experimenting until you find your favorite.

Onigiri Rice Balls at Musubiya

For those who want to enjoy breakfast near Osaka Castle, Onigiri Rice Balls at Musubiya is a wonderful choice. This onigiri specialty shop, popular among both locals and tourists, is located a 15-minute walk from Osaka Castle Park.
In addition to classic onigiri favorites like the most popular salmon, as well as bonito flakes, plum, and tuna, they also offer daily changing flavors. The onigiri are generously sized — two or three pieces make a fully satisfying breakfast.
There is no eat-in option; takeout only is available. The recommended way to enjoy your meal is to pick up onigiri from Musubiya and head over to nearby Osaka Castle Park to have breakfast while taking in the castle and natural surroundings.
The interior features a clean and stylish design centered on natural wood, and you can also find specialty products from Okayama Prefecture, located to the west of Osaka. Be sure to check out the fruits and desserts for which Okayama is famously known.

Brooklyn Roasting Company Kitahama

"Brooklyn Roasting Company Kitahama" is a New York-born cafe located a 3-minute walk from Kitahama subway station. You can choose from two types of beans that change daily, focusing on the origin and farm. You can enjoy them as drip coffee or espresso, but the recommended way is simple black drip coffee. The mild yet aromatic coffee is perfect for breakfast.
Next to the cash register, there's a lineup of baked goods like scones, donuts, and cakes. Meal-type foods like salmon and cream cheese bagels are also popular.
On this day, I chose the seasonal pineapple cake. It goes without saying that the combination of the refreshing flavor of pineapple-rich cake and the mellow drip coffee is excellent.
Why not start your best day in the open atmosphere of the shop?

R Baker

"R Baker" is a bakery cafe in Osaka Castle Park where you can eat bread made with domestic rice flour. The rice flour bread, which has a higher water content than bread made only with wheat flour, is characterized by its chewy texture.
I visited right after opening at 7:00 AM. When I entered the shop, lured by the aroma of bread, I was excited by the colorful freshly baked bread of various types. My target was the "Stretchy Croissant" that's popular on social media. As the name suggests, this croissant that stretches like mochi is crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, with a unique texture that can only be tasted because of the rice flour.
Sets where you can add salad and soup to your bread are perfect for breakfast. Stop by before sightseeing at Osaka Castle!

Danshaku

Danshaku is a kissaten (traditional Japanese coffee shop) located just a 5-minute walk from JR Shin-Osaka Station. With its retro atmosphere and long-standing history, this beloved café has been a favorite among Osaka locals for many years.
Danshaku offers a "Morning Set," a system unique to Japanese coffee shops where you can enjoy a light breakfast such as toast paired with a drink at an affordable price. Starting from 8:00 AM, guests can enjoy a delicious breakfast alongside coffee without breaking the bank.
The morning menu at Danshaku includes options like the "Toast Set" and the "Egg Sandwich Set." I ordered the "Toast Set," and the thick-cut toast had a wonderfully chewy texture that I really enjoyed. With coffee and a salad included, the whole meal came to just 700 yen — an incredibly reasonable price for a satisfying breakfast.
One thing to note is that smoking is permitted throughout the entire seating area, so those sensitive to cigarette smoke should be aware before visiting. Payment is also accepted in cash only, so be sure to come prepared.

Coffee House Sancho

Coffee House Sancho is a traditional coffee shop with a classic atmosphere, located on the 1st floor of the Shin-Osaka Station building. Like Danshaku, this café also offers a "Morning" system, where you can enjoy a breakfast and coffee set at a reasonable price.
The morning menu is available from around 7:00 AM until 11:30 AM, making it a great option whether you're looking for an early breakfast or a leisurely brunch.
The sandwich set I ordered came with a tuna and cucumber sandwich, a fruit plate of orange and banana, a boiled egg, and coffee — all for 950 yen. I spent a thoroughly satisfying morning enjoying a hearty breakfast in the quiet, classic atmosphere of the café.
However, Sancho is also a café that allows indoor smoking. When I visited, there were quite a few people smoking inside, so those who are sensitive to cigarette smoke or its smell should take note before visiting.

5 Tourist Spots You Want to Visit Before the Crowds!
Osaka Castle Park (Open 24 hours)

Osaka Castle, a popular tourist spot, is recommended to visit early in the morning to avoid crowds. Osaka Castle Park, rich in nature, is perfect for morning walks.
Osaka Castle, built by the warring states period warrior Toyotomi Hideyoshi who was active about 400 years ago, was completed in 1597. The walls, gates, stone walls, and turrets (yagura) in the park are designated as important cultural properties of the country.
A yagura is a high platform for keeping watch on the surroundings. The oldest existing building in Osaka Castle is the "Sengan Yagura."
The "Sakura Gate," the southern gate leading to Osaka Castle Keep, offers a perfect photo opportunity with the castle keep visible through the gate. It's popular with tourists during the day and gets crowded, so it's recommended to take photos in the less crowded morning.
There are 300 cherry trees planted in the park, and when I visited in spring, the fully bloomed cherry blossoms were beautifully decorating the park.

Some floors prohibit photography, so check before taking pictures.
It's recommended to visit right after opening at 9 AM. You can see everything in about 40 minutes to an hour. If you want to carefully watch videos and read explanations, it's good to allow about 30 minutes extra.

Osaka Tenmangu Shrine (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM)

Osaka Tenmangu, popular with foreigners, enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning. It's a famous shrine where many people come to pray for success in exams during the exam season.
It's recommended to visit early when the air is fresh right after the gates open. You can pray in a refreshing mood.
Before praying, purify your hands and heart at the temizuya (hand-washing fountain) where water imbued with the god's power is enshrined. Tenmangu has a beautiful emerald green temizuya that's also popular as a photogenic spot.
The wide variety of amulets are perfect for souvenirs. For myself, I chose a cute bell amulet called "Sachisuzu" with a beautiful sound.
It's also recommended to visit during seasonal festivals such as the plum festival in February and the Tenjin Festival in summer!

Nakanoshima Park (Open 24 hours)

Nakanoshima Park, just from Kitahama Station, is ideal for morning walks. It's open 24 hours, so it's also recommended to stop by before going to other tourist spots.
Staying at a hotel near the park, I enjoyed jogging early in the morning. You can start your day refreshingly while feeling the morning air in the nature-rich park.
There's a rose garden in the park where about 310 varieties of roses are grown. The best time to see roses is May and October, but you can enjoy seasonal flowers at other times too.
Around the park, there are retro and tasteful buildings like the Nakanoshima Library and Osaka City Central Public Hall, which make great backdrops for photos.
There are many cafes nearby, so it's a good idea to take out coffee and bring it with you!

Umeda Sky Building Floating Garden Observatory (9:30 AM - 10:00 PM)

The Umeda Sky Building is a landmark in Umeda, selected as one of the "World's Top 20 Buildings" by a British newspaper. You can view the city of Osaka from the observatory 173m above ground.
The 360-degree panoramic view is as beautiful as a painting. It gets quite crowded during the day, so it's recommended to go as early as possible.
The see-through escalator from the 39th to the 40th floor gives you a sensation of moving through the air.
The cafe, which opens at 10:00 AM, also has a rich menu of light meals like takoyaki. The "Color Pop Soda Float," a colorful soda topped with soft-serve ice cream, is popular for its stylish appearance. My four friends and I each ordered different flavors and enjoyed the photogenic aspect. Please try it!

Purchasing tickets online in advance allows for smooth entry. Using the "Express Pass" (paid) which allows priority entry to eligible attractions can help you enjoy the whole day even more stress-free.
My recommendation is to get souvenirs first after entering. The souvenir shops right after opening are relatively empty, so you can enjoy shopping at a leisurely pace.

3 Model Courses to Fully Enjoy Osaka Mornings
Dotonbori Model Course: Kuromon Market ~ Namba Grand Kagetsu ~ Dotonbori

How about a course like this to fully enjoy the "Osaka-ness"?
8:30-9:30 Breakfast at Kuromon Market
10:00-12:30 Experience the "comedy culture" at Namba Grand Kagetsu
13:00 Enjoy crab lunch at Dotonbori
First, enjoy breakfast at the lively morning Kuromon Market. Fresh seafood bowls and sushi are recommended in the morning when fresh ingredients are available.
Once you've filled your stomach, let's go experience Osaka's unique "comedy culture." In Osaka, where commerce has been thriving for about 400 years, it was common to advance negotiations by making the other party laugh, and from there, "laughter" seems to have taken root as a culture.
At "Namba Grand Kagetsu," you can enjoy various comedy shows like rakugo, manzai, and skits. Among them, "Yoshimoto Shinkigeki," which unfolds like a play, is popular with foreigners as it can be enjoyed even without understanding Japanese, with its movements, rhythm of words, and stage sets.
When you get hungry after laughing a lot, get "Takosen" at "Wanaka" right next to Namba Grand Kagetsu. Takosen is a standard Osaka snack where takoyaki is sandwiched between shrimp crackers. After eating Takosen while moving to Dotonbori, enjoy lunch at "Kani Doraku" marked by the big crab sign!

Frequently Asked Questions About Osaka Breakfast & Morning Spots
What is a typical breakfast in Osaka?
A typical breakfast in Osaka includes miso soup with rice, hot udon noodles, or a kissaten (traditional coffee shop) morning set — usually toast, a soft-boiled egg, and a salad served alongside coffee for little to no extra charge.
Osaka is known for its kuidaore culture (eating until you drop), and that spirit extends to the morning. Street food staples like takoyaki and okonomiyaki are also available from early-opening stalls, making Osaka's breakfast scene far more diverse and satisfying than in many other Japanese cities.
The kissaten morning set in particular is a beloved local ritual and a great way to experience everyday Osaka life.
What time do breakfast places open in Osaka?
Most breakfast spots in Osaka open between 7:00 and 9:00 AM. Kissaten and café-style morning sets are usually available until around 11:00 AM, after which many transition to a lunch menu.
If you're an early riser, markets like Kuromon Ichiba begin to come alive from around 9:00 AM, while some street food vendors near busy commuter areas open as early as 6:30 AM.
Convenience stores (konbini) such as 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and Lawson are open 24/7 and are a surprisingly solid option for a quick, affordable breakfast — onigiri, sandwiches, and hot drinks are all readily available.
What is the best area for breakfast in Osaka?
For the most variety and atmosphere, Shinsaibashi and Namba are hard to beat — you'll find everything from traditional kissaten to modern brunch cafés all within walking distance.
Tenjinbashisuji, one of Japan's longest shopping streets, is another excellent choice for a more local feel, lined with old-school coffee shops and small eateries popular with neighborhood regulars.
If you're staying near Umeda (Osaka Station), the area offers a wide range of options too, including basement-level food halls (depachika) in department stores that open early with fresh pastries and bento.
For a more scenic start to the day, heading toward Nakanoshima along the river provides a quieter, café-lined morning walk.
Is Kuromon Market good for breakfast?
Yes — Kuromon Ichiba Market is a great spot for a market-style breakfast, with vendors selling fresh seafood, grilled skewers, tamagoyaki (rolled egg omelette), and local produce that you can graze through at your own pace.
That said, most stalls don't open until around 9:00 AM, and the market gets noticeably crowded by mid-morning, especially on weekends. Arriving right when it opens is the best way to enjoy it without the crowds.
Also note that Kuromon is more of a snack-and-graze experience than a sit-down breakfast — if you prefer a proper table and a full meal, consider combining it with a visit to a nearby café.
What are fun things to do in Osaka early in the morning?
Some of the best early morning activities in Osaka include exploring Dotonbori before the crowds arrive, visiting Kuromon Market when it opens, and taking a peaceful walk along the Okawa River near Nakanoshima.
For a cultural experience, Osaka Tenmangu Shrine offers a meditative atmosphere in the early hours before tour groups arrive. If you're interested in food culture, joining an early morning food tour is a great way to discover neighborhood kissaten and local market life with a guide.
Spring visitors shouldn't miss a morning stroll under the cherry blossoms along the Okawa River, a beloved ritual among locals. And for a fascinating glimpse into everyday Japanese life, watching Osaka's commuter rush from a café window is an experience unlike anything else.
