Osaka Jo Castle: A Symbolic Structure Built About 400 Years Ago

Amidst the modern buildings of Osaka, the dynamic and splendid main tower (Tenshukaku) of Osaka Jo Castle stands out. It is one of the architectural symbols of Osaka and has been designated by the nation as a particularly important structure for preserving culture.

Japanese castles were built for military purposes to prevent enemy intrusion. Therefore, Osaka Jo Castle had multiple traps set up before reaching the main tower, including heavy gates to prevent easy enemy entry and turrets (Yagura) to attack enemies entering through the gates.

The current main tower functions as a museum where you can learn about such valuable structures and the history of Osaka Jo Castle, which became the base for the unification of Japan (Tenka toitsu). The interior of the main tower has been modernly rebuilt for convenience, with elevators installed.

Brief History of Osaka Jo Castle

About 400 years ago, during the warring states period (Sengoku jidai) in Japan, the famous warlord "Toyotomi Hideyoshi," who left his name in Japanese history, built the castle. After the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the castle lord, Osaka Jo Castle was conquered and all its structures were once buried.

Later, it was rebuilt by the leader of the time, and it is said that the foundation of the current main tower (Tenshu dai) and the moat (Ohori) were created. Furthermore, the main tower was burned down by lightning just ten years after its reconstruction. As buildings were made of wood at the time, the burning of main towers due to fire was common throughout Japan.

The current main tower is the third generation, rebuilt in 1931 with reinforced concrete using citizen donations. It now serves as a museum exhibiting historical materials related to Osaka Jo Castle, including armor (Bugu) and weapons (Buki) used at the time.

Who was "Toyotomi Hideyoshi," the builder of Osaka Jo Castle?

Toyotomi Hideyoshi was the only warlord (Busyo) who achieved the unification of Japan (Tenka toitsu). He greatly influenced the development of Japanese systems and commerce by converting the taxation system of the time to a rational management method and promoting trade with Europe and Southeast Asia.

The authority of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who unified Japan, is reflected in the splendid main tower of Osaka Jo Castle.

Three Must-See Attractions When Visiting Osaka Jo Castle

The Magnificent "Main Tower" That Evokes Past Glory

Main Tower

The main tower of Osaka Jo Castle is covered with black, gold, and emerald green decorations on a base of pure white castle walls. Not only is its dynamic appearance immediately visible upon exiting the nearest station, but you'll also be overwhelmed by the dazzling design, including the golden shachihoko (mythical fish-like roof ornament).

The night view of Osaka Jo Castle, when it's illuminated, is also a must-see. The castle gradually lit up after sunset to create a romantic and spectacular view. You can enjoy a different, solemn yet fantastic Osaka Jo Castle at night.

When I first visited Osaka Jo Castle in spring, it was during an event period when the cherry blossoms (Sakura) blooming in the park were also illuminated. I remember being moved by the collaboration of beautifully lit traditional Japanese architecture and cherry blossoms. If you're going to enjoy Osaka Jo Castle, I recommend visiting during an event.

The 8th-floor observatory offers a panoramic view of Osaka's cityscape

On the 8th floor, the top floor of Osaka Jo Castle's main tower, there's an observatory with a panoramic view of Osaka Castle Park (Osakajo Koen) and the city of Osaka. The park's natural scenery changes with the seasons, attracting more tourists than usual, especially in spring when cherry blossoms are in full bloom and in autumn when it's colored with vibrant autumn leaves (Koyo).

Experience the fusion of modern skyscrapers and the historic Osaka Jo Castle.

The Majestic Main Gate "Sakuramon"

Sakuramon

"Sakuramon" (Cherry Blossom Gate) is the front entrance to the main bailey (Honmaru: the core area of the castle) of Osaka Jo Castle. In the world of warfare, "Sakuramon" played a role in preventing enemies from entering the castle. Traces of this can still be seen today, including the smaller, highly defensive roof and the sturdy iron-made doors.

The huge stones supporting both sides of the gate are also a must-see. When I first visited "Sakuramon," I remember being amazed at how they managed to transport these stones by manpower in an era without modern machinery. It's a spot where you can feel the wisdom and passion of the people of that time.

"Sakuramon" is also popular as a photogenic spot where you can capture Osaka Jo Castle through the gate. Since modern buildings don't appear in the frame, you can take a photo that feels like you've time-slipped. If you want to take a quintessentially Japanese photo, check this spot out.

"Sengan Yagura," the Oldest Existing Building in the Castle Grounds

Sengan Yagura

"Sengan Yagura" is known as the oldest building within Osaka Jo Castle. It was a building used to attack enemies entering through the castle gates with arrows (Ya) and guns (Teppo) from a distance away from the gate.

You can see various ingenious features from the warring era, such as lattice windows (Koshi mado) used to check if enemies were at the "Ote Guchi" (one of the entrances to the main tower), and small holes called gun slits (Teppo Hazama) used to pass weapons through to attack enemies.

Since the interior of "Sengan Yagura" is not accessible except during special opening periods, check the official website in advance if you want to visit. It's a rare opportunity to see the interior that even Japanese people don't usually get to see, making it an unforgettable Japanese cultural experience.

Don't Miss Osaka Castle Park, an Urban Oasis Where You Can Enjoy Nature Through the Seasons!

If you're visiting Osaka Jo Castle, it would be a shame not to enjoy the seasonal natural scenery in Osaka Castle Park!

Being able to feel nature that changes with Japan's four seasons while in a modern city with skyscrapers is another attractive point of Osaka Castle Park.

"Spring in Osaka Castle Park" with Breathtakingly Beautiful Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom

Spring in Osaka Castle Park

From late March to early April, cherry blossoms, a symbol of Japanese spring, reach their peak bloom. During this period, Osaka Castle Park is decorated with about 3,000 cherry blossom trees, attracting more tourists than usual.

The emerald green of the main tower and the pale pink of the cherry blossoms enhance each other's vibrancy, creating the best scenery.

As a photography enthusiast, this cherry blossom season at Osaka Jo Castle is particularly my favorite. Every spring, my routine is to walk around the park looking for spots where I can take beautiful photos of the cherry blossoms and Osaka Jo Castle. When you get tired of walking, I recommend taking a break at a cafe in the park, enjoying the view while sipping coffee.

"Autumn in Osaka Castle Park" Colored with Vibrant Autumn Leaves

Autumn in Osaka Castle Park

Osaka Castle Park is also very popular for its autumn scenery, enveloped in vibrant autumn leaves (Koyo). The autumn leaves in Osaka Castle Park typically reach their peak from mid-November to early December.

The trees dyed in red, yellow, and orange colors complement well with the white-based main tower of Osaka Jo Castle. Osaka Jo Castle, seen through the bright red autumn leaves, seems somewhat passionate. The red of the autumn leaves perfectly matches the splendid Osaka Jo Castle.

Furthermore, around mid-November, the fragrant osmanthus, known for its aromatic scent heralding the arrival of autumn, blooms. Being able to feel the seasons with all your senses - the visually colorful scenery, the scent, and the temperature of the wind - is another attractive point of Osaka Castle Park.

4 Recommended Restaurants Where You Can Enjoy Delicious Food While Viewing Osaka Jo Castle

Jojoen Yugentei Hotel New Otani Osaka

At "Jojoen Yugentei Hotel New Otani Osaka," you can enjoy high-class yakiniku while closely viewing the main tower of Osaka Jo Castle and the nature in the park.

"Jojoen" is a popular high-end yakiniku chain restaurant in Japan. It's recommended when you want to eat high-quality meat, such as the Jo Negi Tan Shio Yaki (top-grade salted beef tongue with plenty of green onions) with its good texture, or the Karubi (short ribs) with a perfect balance of lean and fatty meat.

Surprisingly, the most popular menu item at "Jojoen" is actually the salad. Although simple, consisting of only lettuce (Saradana) and cucumber (Kyuri) with dressing, its freshness and the sesame-flavored dressing calculated down to the water content of the vegetables are the secrets to its popularity. You can feel the meticulous attention to detail of a high-end restaurant in the way they serve cucumbers peeled, which are generally eaten with the skin on.

Please enjoy Japan's delicious yakiniku (and salad) while being watched over by Osaka Jo Castle.
