How to Get to Mt. Hiei from Kyoto?

Mt. Hiei is a mountain that spans across Kyoto Prefecture and neighboring Shiga Prefecture. To reach Mt. Hiei, which stands 848 meters above sea level, you'll travel from Kyoto Station using a combination of buses, trains, cable cars, and ropeways.

From JR Kyoto Station to Cable Yase Station (the cable car station leading to Mt. Hiei), the distance is approximately 10 kilometers.

Kyoto has excellent transportation convenience, and you can access Cable Yase Station via various means including subway and buses. However, we recommend taking bus "No. 206" departing from Kyoto Station to "Mototanaka Station," then transferring to Eizan Railway to reach Cable Yase Station, as this route involves less walking from bus stops and fewer transfers.

Please note that Eizan Railway also operates trains bound for "Kifune and Kurama," so be careful not to board the wrong train.

Route 1:
"JR Kyoto Station" → "Kyoto City Bus No. 206" → Get off at "Eiden Mototanaka" → From Eiden "Mototanaka Station," board "Eizan Railway to Yase-Hieizan Guchi" → Get off at "Yase-Hieizan Guchi" → 5-minute walk to "Cable Yase Station"

Route 2:
"JR Kyoto Station" → Board Kyoto Subway Line → Get off at "Imadegawa" → From Karasuma Imadegawa, board "Kyoto City Bus No. 203" → Get off at "Demachiyanagi Ekimae" → From Eiden "Demachiyanagi Station," board "Eizan Railway to Yase-Hieizan Guchi" → Get off at "Yase-Hieizan Guchi" → 5-minute walk to "Cable Yase Station"

The Charm of Mt. Hiei

Mt. Hiei is an 848-meter mountain spanning across Kyoto Prefecture and Shiga Prefecture. The entire mountain serves as the grounds of Enryaku-ji Temple, where you can feel a spiritual atmosphere.

Enryaku-ji was founded in 806 by a monk called "Saicho." Since then, famous monks in Japanese history such as "Nichiren" and "Shinran" trained at Enryaku-ji and spread various Buddhist sects. Mt. Hiei has played an important role in the development of Japanese Buddhism.

From the summit, you can enjoy beautiful views of Lake Biwa and the spectacular scenery of Kyoto, experiencing dynamic nature at its finest. In recent years, facilities for tourism enjoyment, such as flower gardens and cafés, have also become well-established.

Please enjoy Mt. Hiei, where you can experience traditional heritage, beautiful nature, and delicious local flavors.

One-Day Itinerary to Enjoy Mt. Hiei's Historical Tourist Sites and Traditions

8:00 AM: Departure from Kyoto

Now begins your journey to Mt. Hiei! It takes nearly an hour from Kyoto Station to the cable car boarding station. There are no toilets on the buses or trains, so we recommend stopping at restrooms and vending machines you encounter during transfers to prepare accordingly.

Additionally, buses heading to Eizan Railway's "Mototanaka Station" or "Demachiyanagi Station" run frequently, so don't worry if you miss your planned bus. Many buses depart from JR Kyoto Station, so check the bus destination carefully and calmly start your journey without boarding the wrong bus.

9:15 AM: Arrival at Yase-Hieizan Guchi Station / Taking the Ropeway and Cable Car to Mt. Hiei Summit

Upon arriving at "Yase-Hieizan Guchi Station," walk about 5 minutes to reach the cable car station, "Yase Station."

Once you arrive at Yase Station, transfer between the cable car and ropeway to head to the Mt. Hiei summit. The panoramic view of Kyoto City spreading dynamically below from the ropeway ascending to Mt. Hiei's 848-meter summit is a must-see.

Before heading to Mt. Hiei, we recommend purchasing the "Hieizan Free Pass," which allows unlimited rides on all transportation including cable cars, ropeways, and buses used during your trip. You can purchase this pass at "Demachiyanagi Station," convenience stores like "Seven Eleven," or online in advance.

9:40AM: Leisurely Enjoy Garden Museum Hiei

Source:Tripadvisor

When you get off the ropeway, beautiful flowers will welcome you. "Garden Museum Hiei" is a flower garden where over 1,500 varieties of flowers and herbs including roses and nemophila bloom magnificently.

The garden is designed with motifs from paintings created by artists like Monet and Renoir. Each area has its own concept, such as the rose garden and plane tree square, creating an artistic garden landscape.

My personal favorite spot is the "Water Lily Garden" inspired by Monet's "Water Lilies." The pond with beautiful red and white water lilies blooming is magnificently recreated down to the bridge, displaying beauty like a real painting. Water lilies can be enjoyed for a relatively long period from late May to early September, so please be sure to visit.

East Pagoda, Enryaku-ji Temple

While Enryaku-ji is divided into three areas, the East Pagoda Area is the birthplace of Enryaku-ji, created in 788 by "Saicho," the founder of Enryaku-ji.

This area has the most pagodas among the three areas, including the main pagoda Konpon Chudo, Daiko-do where lectures are held, "Daikoku-do" where "Daikoku-ten," the guardian deity of abundant harvests, is enshrined, and "Amida-do" where Amida Nyorai is enshrined.

Enryaku-ji Konpon Chudo

While Enryaku-ji has central pagodas called "Chudo" in each of the three areas, "Konpon Chudo" is the largest and most central pagoda of Enryaku-ji.

The principal image enshrines "Yakushi Nyorai," a Buddha who governs medicine and health. In front of Yakushi Nyorai burns the light of "Eternal Flames," which have continued burning for 1,200 years without extinguishing. This is a spot where you can feel a very exotic and mystical atmosphere.

Currently, Konpon Chudo is undergoing major renovation from 2016 to 2026. While you can enter the interior, the exterior is under construction with roof replacement and painting work being carried out. The current Konpon Chudo was built in 1642, and this is important work to preserve its unchanged appearance for future generations. A viewing platform has been set up where you can observe the construction work, so please take this opportunity to check it out.

Enryaku-ji Daikodo

Source:Google Maps

"Daikodo" is a training place where Enryaku-ji monks study lectures on Buddhist teachings. Lectures on the "Hoke Sutra," which are teachings from Buddha transmitted from India, are mainly conducted here.

Additionally, this is an important place where "Hokke Daie," the final examination to become a monk of the "Tendai Sect," is held once every four years.

The current Daikodo is a building that was relocated in 1964 from a structure that had been used as a storage facility at the foot of Mt. Hiei. Built in 1634, it is now designated as an Important Cultural Property. In front of Daikodo stands a bell that is said to bring peace and good fortune, beloved by tourists. You can ring it for 50 yen once, so please ring it and pray for peace and good fortune.

Amidado・Hoke Soji-in East Pagoda

Source:Google Maps

As you proceed deeper into the East Pagoda Area, you'll see the beautiful vermillion-painted Hoke Soji-in East Pagoda and Amidado.

Hokke Soji-in East Pagoda is one of six towers built by Saicho, who founded Enryaku-ji, to protect Japan. The original structure was lost, but it was newly rebuilt in 1980.

The adjacent Amidado enshrines "Amida Nyorai," who saves all people and guides them to the Pure Land paradise.

Both are new buildings constructed within the last 100 years, but this area allows you to experience the beauty of modern Buddhist architecture.

12:00 PM: Lunch around Enryaku-ji Temple

The area around the East Pagoda, which is the main area of Enryaku-ji Temple, is well-equipped with restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy meals as part of your one-day trip itinerary from Kyoto to Mt. Hiei. We will introduce 4 recommended shops where you can taste Buddhist-related sweets that can only be eaten here, as well as local cuisine from around Enryaku-ji Temple.

Enryakuji-kaikan Restaurant Bouko

Source:Official website

At "Enryakuji Kaikan," you can enjoy noodle dishes like udon and soba that can be eaten quickly, as well as authentic "Shojin ryori" (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine) that doesn't use any animal meat.

Since it's located within the temple, no meat is served, and all dishes are made from plant-based ingredients such as vegetables, grains, and seaweed. Although no animal meat is used, tofu and seasonal ingredients are used as protein sources, allowing you to enjoy a satisfying meal.

In particular, the "Hiei Kabayaki-jyu," made with burdock root and tofu that are ground and fried, is only served on weekends and offers a voluminous and unique flavor. Please enjoy the charm of Shojin ryori that is unique to temples.

Reiho

Reiho is a cafe where you can enjoy matcha and sweets. From the windows, you can view the dynamic Lake Biwa and enjoy meals while taking in the spectacular scenery.

Reiho's specialty is lattes and tiramisu featuring "Bonji" characters. Bonji are Buddhist characters created in India, where each character is given meaning like Chinese characters. At Reiho, you can choose your favorite Bonji from a list and they will create original lattes and tiramisu for you.

If you want to enjoy light meals and sweets, why not take a break at Reiho and try these sweets that let you feel Buddhism during your Mt. Hiei day trip from Kyoto?

Tsuruki-soba

Source:Official website

In the 1700s during the Edo era, a person called "Tsuruya Kihachi" opened a soba shop in this area for visitors to Enryaku-ji and Hiyoshi Shrine. Named "Tsuruki-soba" after the founder Tsuruya Kihachi, it is still beloved as a local cuisine of this area today.

You can taste Tsuruki-soba at two locations in the East Pagoda area. My recommendation is the Tempura Soba that comes as a set with tempura. The crispy tempura and gentle-flavored soba are an excellent combination.

In hot summer, the cold soba with its refreshing taste is also recommended.

Hiei Saryo

Source:Tabelog

"Hiei Saryo" is a shop where you can enjoy various types of Japanese sweets, including "Mitarashi-dango" with sweet soy sauce-based sauce, "Zenzai" (sweet red bean soup with mochi), and drinks and soft-serve ice cream using matcha.

Among the abundant sweets, my recommendation is the Mitarashi-dango. The sweet-salty flavor and chewy texture create an addictive deliciousness. The pairing with the tea served alongside is also excellent.

Since you can quickly enjoy treats at the rest area outside the shop, it's also recommended to stop by for a break when tired or for dessert after lunch during your Kyoto to Mt. Hiei day trip.

For those who enjoyed walking and sightseeing around Enryaku-ji on Mt. Hiei, we also recommend visiting "Fushimi Inari Shrine."

Fushimi Inari, with its impressive beautiful vermillion torii gates, became famous on social media and attracts many tourists from both domestic and international destinations daily.

The "Fushimi Inari Hidden Hiking Tour" provided by Magical Trip explores not only the well-known Fushimi Inari, but also areas with a more spiritual atmosphere that tourists rarely visit, such as natural bamboo forests and shrines deep in the mountains.

The approximately 3-hour trail will be a special experience that can only be enjoyed with a local guide who knows the area well.

1:15PM: Move to West Pagoda Area and enjoy the main structures of Enryaku-ji

After enjoying lunch, head to the West Pagoda Area. It takes about 10 minutes by bus or about 30 minutes on foot to access from the East Pagoda Area. Since this route gets crowded on weekends and holidays, consider the bus congestion and departure times to choose the most convenient transportation method.

Shaka-do

"Shaka-do" is the pagoda that plays a central role in the West Pagoda Area. The principal image enshrines "Shaka Nyorai," also known as Buddha, who founded Buddhism.

Since Enryaku-ji temple was burned down in 1571 by the Sengoku era general "Oda Nobunaga," there are no structures from before that time. The current Shaka-do was relocated in 1595 by "Toyotomi Hideyoshi," a general who was active in Osaka during the Sengoku era, from a temple at the foot of the mountain. Shaka-do is the oldest structure in Enryaku-ji and is registered as an Important Cultural Property. This majestic pagoda with its dignified presence allows you to feel the atmosphere of the Kamakura era.

Enryaku-ji Ninaido

The two pagodas connected by a beautiful symmetrical corridor are called "Ninai-do." In the left "Jogyo-do," the "Amida sutra" is recited to guide people to the Pure Land after death, while in the right "Hoke-do," the "Hoke sutra" is recited to guide all people to the Pure Land.

These two sutras differ in how they guide people to the Pure Land, but at Enryaku-ji, it is taught that these two different sutras lead to one path. The corridor connecting these two pagodas can be said to be a symbol representing this teaching.

Jodo-in

Jodo-in is located on the path from the East Pagoda Area to the West Pagoda Area. This pagoda, wrapped in silence, is also the mausoleum of "Saicho," the founder of Enryaku-ji.

While all of Mt. Hiei is traditionally considered sacred ground, Jodo-in is the most sacred place within it. The monks training at Jodo-in are said to train with the resolve not to leave the mountain for 12 years, and thorough cleaning is performed daily to the extent that not even a single fallen leaf can be found. Although the visit only involves viewing the building from outside, when you come to Enryaku-ji, be sure to visit and experience the sacred and solemn atmosphere.

After enjoying the West Area, having lunch at "Hieizan Minemichi Restaurant" is also recommended

Source:Tabelog

The West Area is close to the East Area, so you can tour them in your preferred order. When using a restaurant in the West Area, "Hieizan Minemichi Restaurant" is recommended. You can enjoy lunch time while overlooking Lake Biwa through the open, glass-walled windows.

You can taste various menu items including temple-style "Shojin ryori" that uses no meat or fish, quick ramen, hearty hamburgers, and traditional Japanese sweets.

My recommendation is the traditional Japanese sweet called "Goma-tofu zenzai," a Mt. Hiei specialty that uses sesame instead of soybeans. The sweet red bean paste and goma-tofu pair well together, and the refreshing, gentle flavor will soothe your body tired from walking.

2:30PM: Enjoy "Yokawa Area," the last must-see tourist destination of Enryaku-ji

Finally, head to "Yokawa," the third area of Enryaku-ji. Although it's about 4km away from the West Pagoda Area, this is an area where you can feel the mystical atmosphere surrounded by nature, so it's definitely an area you'll want to visit.

Since it takes more than an hour on foot, be sure to check the bus departure times from the West Pagoda Area and the return bus schedule to Cable Enryaku-ji Station in advance to avoid missing them.

Yokawa Main Hall

"Yokawa Area" was founded in 848 by "Ennin," a monk who was active during the Heian era. It's away from the East Pagoda and West Pagoda areas and is wrapped in a quiet atmosphere surrounded by nature.

Yokawa Main Hall features a wooden stage built on stilts, similar to Kyoto's Kiyomizu Temple. The current Main Hall is a new building constructed in 1971, but the contrast between the surrounding nature and the beautiful vermillion-painted Main Hall is a must-see.

Shikikodo

"Shikikodo" is a temple named after "Shiki," which means the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter in Japanese. It originates from the fact that Ganzan Taishi, who resided there, held lectures on the Hoke Sutra for each season.

Ganzan Taishi is also famous as the inventor of omikuji (fortune-telling paper slips), and Shikikodo, where Ganzan Taishi is enshrined, is beloved as the birthplace of omikuji.

Shikikodo is also said to bring benefits for warding off evil spirits, removing bad luck, and academic achievement. When you come to Yokawa, be sure to visit for worship.

Eshindo

"Eshindo" is a temple built in 978 by "Fujiwara Kaneie," a nobleman who was active in Kyoto during the Heian era, together with "Ganzan Taishi." This is where "Eshin Sozu," the founder of the "Jodo-shu sect," which teaches that one can achieve rebirth in the Pure Land by chanting the nembutsu, practiced. He also greatly influenced "Shinran," who later became the founder of the "Jodo Shinshu sect." For this reason, "Eshindo" is also beloved as the birthplace of the Jodo Shinshu sect.

Like the Jodo Shinshu sect, founders of various Buddhist sects trained at Enryaku-ji and spread their faith throughout Japan. Mt. Hiei is the mother mountain of Japanese Buddhism.

3:30PM: Moving from Yokawa Area to Cable Enryakuji Station

After enjoying the Yokawa area, return to the East Pagoda area where Cable Enryakuji Station is located. As mentioned earlier, it takes over an hour on foot, so make sure to wait at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the scheduled bus arrival time. Also, the last bus departing from Yokkawa is at 4:30 PM, so be sure to make it on time.

4:00PM: Take Japan's Longest Cable Car to Sakamoto-hieizanguchi Station

Source:Wikipedia

For the return journey, descend the mountain using the "Sakamoto Cable car" on the opposite side from the Kyoto direction that you used on the way up.

The Sakamoto cable car is Japan's longest cable car with a running distance of 2,025 meters from the summit to ground level, completed in 11 minutes. This cable car was built in 1927 and has nearly 100 years of history. The views of Shiga Prefecture and Japan's largest lake "Lake Biwa" from near the summit are must-sees.

The cable car runs along the naturally rich mountain slope. Along the way, there are plenty of highlights including tunnels with a retro atmosphere and 7 bridges, offering different attractions from the Kyoto-bound cable car.

〈Basic Information〉

Optional Time: Departure for Kyoto

Once you arrive at the final station, Cable Sakamoto station, head toward Kyoto. If you arrive earlier than scheduled, it's also recommended to visit the "Hiyoshi Taisha shrine" at the foot of the mountain or the beautiful Japanese garden "Kyu Chikurin-in garden."

For the return trip, if you want to go to "Kawaramachi" or "Gion" areas, you can get off at "Yamashina" along the way and transfer to the subway for smooth access to the Kawaramachi area.

To go to Kyoto Station:

15-minute walk from Cable Sakamoto station to "Hieizan Sakamoto station" → Take "Kosei line" → Get off at "Kyoto station"

To go to Kawaramachi:
