In my opinion, simply seeing Mount Fuji and heading back would be a missed opportunity. The surrounding area is filled with stunning nature, historic shrines and temples, and countless spots where you can enjoy exceptional food and sake.

That said, Mount Fuji is enormous, and the number and scale of nearby attractions are vast.

That’s why I recommend exploring the area with locals who truly know the real Mount Fuji region. With tours from Magical Trip—winner of Tripadvisor’s Best of the Best in both 2024 and 2025—you can leave the Mount Fuji area with unforgettable memories.

The “Mt. Fuji Full-day Day Trip Tour from Tokyo with a Private Car & Guide” is a private hire tour that lets you fully enjoy the beautiful scenery around Mount Fuji, the perfect harmony between nature and the mountain itself, and a variety of dishes that showcase the area’s rich food culture.

Fuji no Yama Tea Offering Ceremony

The Fuji no Yama Tea Offering Ceremony is a tea offering ceremony of Oubakukoufuryu (one of the schools of sencha tea ceremony) held at Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine.

In the Tea Offering Ceremony, tea jars containing the first tea of the year (tea made from the first new buds picked that year) that was offered to Mount Fuji Summit Okumiya Shrine are presented before the gods with gratitude to the deities and individuals. The ceremony is conducted in a solemn atmosphere where you can feel the weight of tradition.

When the ceremony concludes, sencha tea and bite-sized Japanese sweets are served to participants in the shrine grounds. I have sat in the prepared seats and drank sencha tea before. The sencha had a moderate sweetness and a refreshing aftertaste, and I felt it was easy to drink even for someone trying sencha for the first time.

The served sencha is available in limited quantities, so please visit early.

The Closing Ceremony of Mount Fuji at Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine is an event held the day after Mt. Fuji's summer season ends.

The ceremony is held at Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine, which enshrines Mt. Fuji as a sacred body (an object where gods dwell), with about 60 related people gathering. Shinto priests (people who perform shrine duties) conduct rituals praying for the safety of worshippers (people who revere specific shrines) and mountain pilgrims (those who climb mountains that are objects of faith), concluding Mt. Fuji's climbing season.

If you have challenged climbing Mt. Fuji, why not participate in the ceremony with gratitude?

Autumn Grand Festival of Fuji Omuro Sengen Shrine

The Autumn Grand Festival of Fuji Omuro Sengen Shrine is a festival that began as a celebration of a battle victory by the Heian period military commander Shinra Saburou Yoshimitsu, and is now held to pray for regional prosperity.

It is held at Fuji Omuro Sengen Shrine, famous as Mt. Fuji's oldest shrine, where you can see the historic "Dance of Urayasu" and portable shrines (vehicles for gods carried during festivals) parading through the area. The portable shrines carried by many local people are powerful, and just watching them will surely lift your spirits!

This festival is positioned as the most important among the annual events held by Fuji Omuro Sengen Shrine, making it a notable event. Food stalls also line the shrine grounds, so please enjoy traditional Japanese festivals while eating your way through the area.

Annual Yabusame Festival

The Annual Yabusame Festival is an event that has been held at Komuro Sengen Shrine without fail for over 800 years. This historic tradition is designated as an intangible folk cultural property of Yamanashi Prefecture.

While Yabusame generally involves shooting arrows at targets from galloping horseback, Komuro Sengen Shrine features a distinctive style where no arrows are shot; instead, they divine good or bad fortune from the hoofprints of the running horses and pray that no disasters or conflicts will occur in the region. Even without shooting arrows, the horses running powerfully before your eyes are impressive, and I found myself captivated by their dignified appearance.

On the previous day, September 18th, horse parades and portable shrines are displayed, and food stalls selling fried chicken, potatoes, yakisoba, and other items add to the excitement. The content is enjoyable for children too, so participation with families is recommended.

Yamanaka Myojin Anzan Festival

The Yamanaka Myojin Anzan Festival is a festival held at Yamanaka Myojin shrine, which enshrines the deity of safe childbirth, where people pray for conception and safe delivery. There is a legend that women who carry the portable shrine (mikoshi) during the night festival are promised safe childbirth, and every year women from across the nation who wish for safe delivery gather here.

The highlight is the climax when the portable shrine, which departs from the shrine on the 4th and is carried to the Mitamaya (ancestral worship facility), parades through the streets on the 5th during the main festival before returning to the shrine. When the portable shrine returns to the shrine, the sight of mothers carrying children on their backs and pregnant women following behind the shrine, circling around the sacred tree (goshinboku - trees considered sacred at shrines and temples) three times is truly spectacular! I was so overwhelmed by the energy-filled climax that I found myself watching in silent awe.

This is one of the few festivals where you can truly feel the power of women. Women who wish for conception or safe childbirth should definitely visit.

Oshino Suwa Shrine Autumn Festival

Source: Oshino Village(

https://www.vill.oshino.lg.jp/site/kanko/1597.html)

The Oshino Suwa Shrine Autumn Festival is one of the Mt. Fuji events in September 2026. At Oshino Suwa Shrine, an autumn festival is held every year starting on September 19. This festival is held to give thanks to the deity for a bountiful harvest, and during the event, a portable shrine is carried through the streets to convey to the deity that the harvest was plentiful.

The portable shrine departs from the shrine in the evening and is characteristically carried while being vigorously shaken up and down in a wild manner. In front of the portable shrine, a lion dance — known as one of Japan's traditional performing arts — is performed, displaying graceful movements in time with the sound of a flute.

I also attended this festival and found myself completely swept up in the excitement of the portable shrine's intense movements and the spirited calls of the carriers. If you want to experience a traditional Japanese autumn festival, this is definitely a must-visit event.

Oshino Hakkai: Suwa's Wild Portable Shrine

The Oshino Hakkai Suwa's Wild Portable Shrine event is one of the Mt. Fuji events in September 2026. At the autumn festival held in September at Oshino Suwa Shrine, a portable shrine is carried to give thanks to the deity for a bountiful harvest. The portable shrine is carried mainly by men who are 42 years old — the age considered a critical year.

A critical year refers to an unlucky age in the Japanese tradition of yakudoshi, a year believed to be prone to misfortune and physical ailments. The autumn festival also serves the purpose of warding off misfortune for those reaching this critical age.

The powerful movements of the portable shrine and the vigorous calls of those carrying it are truly breathtaking, and you are sure to be swept up in tremendous excitement by their energy and intensity. Suwa Shrine is located near Oshino Hakkai, a well-known tourist destination, so if you are visiting the Oshino Hakkai area in September, be sure to stop by.

The Fujinomiya Miyamachi Festival is one of the Mt. Fuji events in September 2026. The Miyamachi Matsuri is a festival held every September at Miyamachi Shopping Street in Fujinomiya, with approximately 50 vendors expected to set up stalls on the day, including food and beverage shops where visitors can enjoy a wide variety of food.

A stamp rally is held at the venue, where you receive a stamp for every purchase of 400 yen or more at a participating store. Once you collect four stamps, you can enter a lottery for a chance to win prizes.

In addition, there are stage performances and a slide for children to enjoy, making it a recommended event for families with kids. Fujinomiya is located close to Mt. Fuji, so on a clear day, you can enjoy meals and activities while taking in the magnificent view of Mt. Fuji. I visit this festival every year myself and always enjoy the lively atmosphere.
