Introduction
Around Mt.Fuji in August, you'll experience pleasantly cool mornings and evenings with comfortable daytime temperatures that aren't too hot. The surrounding area comes alive with a festive atmosphere as daily festivals and fireworks displays are held from August 1st onward.
Mt.Fuji, Japan's tallest mountain, is beloved by many as a symbol of Japan. From July when the climbing season opens, many hikers visit to enjoy the beautiful scenery and magnificent nature.
In August 2026, Mt.Fuji and the surrounding area will host various fireworks festivals at the Fuji Five Lakes and local community festivals. This guide introduces the highlights of these festivals, along with basic event information, dates, and access methods.
2026 Year-round Event Schedule in Mt.Fuji↓

The Biggest Mt.Fuji Event August 2026: Daily Fireworks Festivals at the Fuji Five Lakes
At the Fuji Five Lakes surrounding Mt.Fuji, spectacular fireworks festivals are held throughout August. Between August 1st-5th, each lake hosts its own fireworks display on consecutive days, filling the night sky with beautiful colors.
If you're planning to visit the Mt.Fuji area in August 2026, consider adding these events to your itinerary.
Lake Yamanaka Fireworks Festival

Leading off the summer fireworks events near Lake Kawaguchi is the "Lake Yamanaka Fireworks Festival." This historic festival has continued for over 100 years since the Taisho era. Approximately 10,000 fireworks are launched to commemorate the deceased and express gratitude for the lake's blessings.
Fireworks launched from the lakeshore illuminate the night sky with Mt.Fuji in the background, creating a magical scene. The highlights of the Lake Yamanaka fireworks include colorful variations and diverse displays. Visitors can enjoy continuous fireworks forming large circles and water fireworks rising in semicircles from the lake surface.
Food stalls are open during the day. This is an event where you can fully experience a Japanese summer festival all day long.

Lake Sai Dragon Palace Festival

The Lake Sai Dragon Palace Festival is a traditional celebration held at "Lake Sai," located west of Lake Kawaguchi. It is held annually on August 2nd to express gratitude and respect to the water deity "Toyotamahimenomikoto" who is enshrined at the Ryugu Shrine near Lake Sai.
Fireworks are launched for about 20 minutes starting around 7:30 PM, beautifully illuminating the night sky. The bright lights of the fireworks reflect on Lake Sai's surface, creating a stunning landscape. On the day of the festival, food stalls offering grilled Lake Sai Himemasu (a local fish) and shaved ice are set up at the Amusement Village Plaza.
Himemasu is a rare fish that can only be found in select lakes. As it's not commonly available in regular markets, we recommend trying the salt-grilled version.

Lake Motosu Sacred Lake Festival

The Lake Motosu Sacred Lake Festival is held on the shores of Lake Motosu every year on August 3rd. Lake Motosu is situated in a location surrounded by mountains on three sides. This creates a strong echo when the fireworks are launched, allowing visitors to experience the fireworks more intensely.
The event includes various activities for children, such as handheld fireworks giveaways for children staying at the Lake Motosu Campground, children's portable shrine carrying, and food stall events. With plenty of activities for everyone from children to adults, this is a great event for family trips. If you enjoy camping, you might consider watching the fireworks while cooling off at the Lake Motosu Campground, located at an elevation of 900 meters.
The highly transparent waters of Lake Motosu beautifully reflect the fireworks. Enjoying the fireworks mirrored on the lake surface is another way to appreciate this Mt.Fuji Event August 2026.

Lake Shoji Cool Lake Festival

The Lake Shoji Cool Lake Festival is held annually on August 4th along the shores of Lake Shoji. At the outdoor stage set up at the venue, local bands and jazz musicians perform, exciting the audience. At night, approximately 500 fireworks are launched behind the performance stage.
The fireworks shining in the vast night sky and reflecting on Lake Shoji's surface create a fantastical atmosphere synchronized with the music. One of the attractive points is that the fireworks are launched close to the audience seating, allowing you to enjoy an immersive fireworks experience.
This festival is a wonderful Mt. Fuji event where the lakeside nature, music, and enthusiastic people come together as one. People who love festivals and those who love music can both enjoy its rich content. If you want to experience a unique fireworks display during your August 2026 visit, please make sure to attend.

Kawaguchiko Lake Festival

Lake Kawaguchi, the second largest of the Fuji Five Lakes, hosts the Lake Kawaguchi Lake Festival annually on August 5th. This festival is a historic fireworks display that started in 1917 and marks its 108th anniversary this year. Approximately 10,000 fireworks are launched with Mt. Fuji in the background, beautifully coloring the summer night.
You can enjoy various fireworks such as "Musical Fireworks" that launch in time with music, "Niagara Fireworks" that fall like a waterfall, and large starmines that spread across your entire field of vision.
My recommendation is to view the fireworks from a hotel along Lake Kawaguchi. If you want to enjoy the show without worrying about crowds, it's a good idea to stay near Lake Kawaguchi during this time. Since accommodations fill up quickly on the day of the fireworks display, it's recommended to check availability early.

Oku-Kawaguchiko Hometown Festival

The Oku-Kawaguchiko Hometown Festival is a local festival held annually on August 15th in the Nagahama area on the western shore of Lake Kawaguchi. In the evening, about 100 paper lanterns are displayed, creating a gentle light show. Other attractions include powerful Japanese taiko drum performances, about 500 fireworks, and participatory Bon dance. This festival is popular not only with locals but also with tourists.
My recommendation is the Soryu Taiko drum performance amid the lantern lights. The powerful performance of the low-toned Japanese drums beautifully marks the finale of the Fuji Five Lakes summer festivals.
This festival is a heartwarming event where local history and natural charm blend together. If you want to spend a magical moment at the end of summer during your August 2026 Mt. Fuji visit, please consider attending.

Food stalls and a special stage appear throughout the mall, wrapping the entire shopping complex in a festive mood. When I visited, a local craft beer event was being held, bringing together breweries from across Shizuoka Prefecture for a fun tasting experience with a wide variety of beers.
After a full day of shopping, guests can look up at the night sky as around 400 fireworks are launched to the sound of summer music — a spectacular finale to round off the day.
This event is perfect for those who want to enjoy both shopping and entertainment to the fullest.

Must-See Events for Those Visiting the Mt. Fuji Area in August
In the Mt. Fuji area, besides the Fuji Five Lakes Festival, there are events held in various locations where you can enjoy summer to the fullest. Here, we introduce three recommended events taking place around Mt. Fuji in August 2026. Let's make your trip memorable by thoroughly enjoying the summer.
Yoshida Fire Festival & Susuki Festival

The "Yoshida Fire Festival" and "Susuki Festival" are held annually on August 26th and 27th. These festivals take place at Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine and Suwa Shrine near Fujisan Station. With over 450 years of history, they have been selected as one of Japan's Three Greatest Strange Festivals.
During the day, portable shrines (mikoshi) depart from Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine and Suwa Shrine and parade through town. At night, more than 100 torches about 3 meters tall are set up throughout town and lit. You will feel the festival's voltage increase along with the powerful flames of the torches.
On the following day, at the "Susuki Festival," the portable shrines return to the shrine. Why not experience the traditional festival atmosphere as part of your Mt. Fuji Event August 2026 itinerary?

Mt. Fuji Gojinka (Sacred Fire) Festival

The Mt. Fuji Gojinka (Sacred Fire) Festival is one of the most memorable Mt. Fuji Events in August 2026. Sacred fire collected from Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Okumiya Shrine at the summit of Mt. Fuji is carried by eight mikoshi (portable shrines), which parade through the city streets with prayers for world peace.
The undisputed highlight is the "Kandagawa-nobori," in which the mikoshi enter the Kanda River and push upstream against the current. The sight of the procession surging forward amid sprays of water and spirited calls is truly breathtaking.
My personal recommendation is the reserved viewing seats set up along the riverbank. You'll get soaked by the splashing water, but the close proximity to the mikoshi creates an incredible sense of unity — as if you've become part of the festival itself.
This is a must for travelers seeking an unforgettable, one-of-a-kind experience on their trip.
- Date: August 1, 2026 (scheduled)
- Venue: Sengen Taisha (Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha)
- Address: 1-1 Miyacho, Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture
- Access: 30-minute taxi ride from Shinkansen "Shin-Fuji" Station / 10-minute walk from Minobu Line "Fujinomiya" Station

Miya Odori

Miya Odori is a large community parade in which around 2,000 participants dance through the heart of Fujinomiya City.
Established in 1992 to commemorate the city's 50th anniversary, this relatively new tradition has since grown into a beloved summer staple that defines the season in the city.
More than 60 groups take part, and the variety of costumes — yukata (summer cotton kimono), festival happi coats, and original T-shirts unique to each team — adds another layer of enjoyment. Once the music begins, the entire street transforms into one grand stage.
I started out watching from the sidelines, but was invited by a walk-in participation group and before I knew it, I had joined the circle and was dancing along.
The choreography is not difficult at all — simply following the movements of those around you is more than enough to enjoy it. Smiles spread naturally, and it becomes a moment where you truly feel at one with the whole street.
Don't hesitate to join in — it's a wonderful way to create a joyful travel memory that will stay with you.
- Date: August 2, 2026 (scheduled)
- Venue: Main street in the city center
- Address: Miyacho, Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture
- Access: 10-minute walk from JR Minobu Line "Fujinomiya" Station
- Admission: Free

Oshino Hakkai Festival

The Oshino Hakkai Festival is a celebration that worships "The Eight Great Dragon Kings," the water deities, to pray for the village's peace. It is held annually on August 8th in Oshino Village and is bustling with locals and tourists. During the day, there are food stalls, stage events, and Bon dances, and at night, 5,888 fireworks are launched, inspired by the deity's sacred number 8.
The highlight of the festival is the "Hachi-monji Yaki" (figure-eight burning) that is lit during the festival's climax. The large Chinese character "八" (eight) appearing on the slope of Mt. Koza, along with fireworks launched in sync with music, creates a fantastical atmosphere.
Oshino Village is also famous as a fishing spot. My recommendation is to enjoy fishing during the day and participate in the festival at night as part of your Mt. Fuji Event August 2026 experience.

Date: Annually held on August 8th
Access: Get off at "Fujisan Station" on the Fujikyu Line, transfer to Fujikyu Bus Doshi Line and get off at "Yakuba-mae" (about 10 minutes on foot)
