Kyoto Events September 2026: 15+ Festivals, Moon Viewing & Last-Chance Outdoor Dining
Kyoto, which I consider Japan's most enchanting cultural treasure and spiritual heart, is one of my most beloved destinations where you can experience the essence of traditional Japanese culture through ancient temples, serene gardens, and timeless traditions. As someone deeply fascinated by Japanese history and aesthetics, I find myself returning to Kyoto repeatedly to discover new layers of its profound cultural heritage.
However, due to Kyoto's overwhelming abundance of temples, shrines, traditional districts, and cultural practices, each with centuries of history and significance, creating a meaningful itinerary can be genuinely daunting for visitors. In fact, a French friend of mine visited Kyoto but later expressed disappointment, saying, "I visited many beautiful temples but felt like I was just taking photos without understanding their significance. I couldn't distinguish between what was truly important and what was just tourist-oriented."
This shows that Kyoto can be a challenging destination for foreign visitors to truly appreciate without deep cultural understanding.
If you want to experience Kyoto's ancient culture and spiritual essence authentically and meaningfully, I highly recommend having a knowledgeable local guide provide proper context and craft a thoughtful itinerary.
For high-quality tours with local guides, I definitely recommend Magical Trip. In fact, we've been selected for TripAdvisor's Best of the Best for two consecutive years in 2024 and 2025, which speaks volumes about their exceptional customer satisfaction.

In Kyoto, we offer a wide variety of tours catering to foreign tourists with different needs. Below, I'll introduce some of my favorite tours organized by category, so be sure to check out the details of any tours that catch your interest!

Seimei Festival

Seimei-sai is a festival held at Seimei Shrine, where Abe no Seimei, who possessed the ability to prevent disasters through astronomy and divination, is enshrined.
The main highlight is the Shinkōsai on the 22nd. Led by a youth drum and fife corps, a procession of about 500 people parades through the town, including decorated long spears called "Hoko," young women in white robes called "Yaotome" who dedicate dances, and Mikoshi (Portable Shrines).
The sight of traditional Japanese music echoing throughout and people dressed in traditional costumes continuing in procession is like a historical scroll painting. When I actually witnessed it, my heart trembled with its beauty and power, and I found myself completely absorbed in watching.
This festival, where the entire community comes together in excitement, will surely provide a dynamic cultural experience unique to Kyoto.

Early Autumn Melody: Hagi Festival

Hagi Festival is an event held annually in September at Nashinoki Shrine to celebrate the beginning of autumn. Hagi (bush clover) is a flower that represents autumn in Japan, and Nashinoki Shrine is also a famous spot for hagi in Kyoto.
During the period, dedications of dance and music by people wearing traditional Japanese costumes, demonstrations of Kyūdō and Iaido, and Tea ceremonies are performed.
I participated in a Tea ceremony at this festival. The time spent having tea in a quiet space was more calming than I expected and made me feel peaceful. Even beginners can experience it with confidence as they provide careful guidance to make it easily accessible.

Yoshitsune Festival
The Yoshitsune Festival is a festival commemorating Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Minamoto no Yoshitsune was a legendary Japanese warrior who excelled with his military talents in the 12th century, and it is said that he trained at Mount Kurama in Kyoto during his childhood.
On the festival day, a memorial service is held, followed by dance and martial arts dedications performed in front of the main hall. What was particularly impressive was the Aikido demonstration performed by children. Witnessing their performance, I felt the beauty and courtesy of martial arts, and was reminded that Japan's spirit and values continue to be passed down today.

Imperial Festival: Iwashimizu Festival
The Iwashimizu Festival, held at Iwashimizu Hachiman-gū Shrine in Yawata City, is one of Japan's rare "Chokusai" festivals. "Chokusai" refers to sacred ceremonies conducted with the official dispatch of the Emperor's messenger, prestigious events that pray for national peace and abundant harvests.
This festival begins around 2 AM before dawn. First, sacred rituals are performed at the main hall on the mountain, then priests carrying torches descend the mountain.
At sunrise, the Emperor's messenger offers tributes to the gods, and fish and birds are released into the river to pray for the peace of life. Throughout the day, various traditional ceremonies continue solemnly.

Kushi Festival

In Japan, it has long been believed that a soul dwells even in the everyday tools we use. The Kushi Festival is a uniquely Kyoto event in September 2026 that offers gratitude to the kushi — the comb used to groom and dress hair.
The venue is Yasui Konpira-gu Shrine, located in the Gion area. The shrine is well known for its power to sever bad relationships and foster good ones, and the "Power Stone Monument for breaking off bad and initiating good relationships" within the grounds is a popular spot visited by many worshippers.
During the festival, a Shinto ritual is first held to respectfully lay worn-out combs to rest in a ceremonial mound. This is followed by a highlight of the event — a procession in which women dressed in costumes from different historical eras parade through the streets.
From the Kofun period through to the modern-day maiko, women dressed in period-accurate attire walk through the streets of Gion. What makes this procession especially remarkable is that the traditional hairstyles of each era are styled using the participants' own natural hair rather than wigs.
It is a truly Kyoto scene that will have you reaching for your camera again and again.
- Date: September 28, 2026
- Access: Take the Keihan Main Line to "Gion-Shijo" Station and walk approximately 10 minutes

Exhibitions to Experience Japanese Culture at Kyoto Event September 2026
In September in Kyoto, beyond the traditional events held at shrines, there are many exhibitions where you can enjoy Japanese culture.
Here we have carefully selected some recommended exhibitions to introduce.
Gokonomiya Shrine Noh Performance

"Noh" is a form of Japanese theater with over 600 years of history, in which masked performers enact stories accompanied by song and musical instruments.
Registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, it can be considered the very origin of Japanese performing arts.
At Gokonomiya Shrine in Fushimi, Kyoto, Noh is performed every autumn. Its most distinctive feature is that no electric lighting is used — only the flame of candles illuminates the stage.
You can experience Noh exactly as people once watched it in an era before electric lights. The expression of the mask, lit by flickering flames, appears to shift through different emotions depending on the angle, leaving you with a strangely mysterious feeling.
Even if you don't understand Japanese, the beauty of the movements and the power of the music are more than enough to enjoy the performance — so do make sure to visit.

Otakaritsuri Festival & Kami-zumo

"Sumo" is known as Japan's national sport, but it originally began as a sacred ritual offered to the gods.
At this festival, you can witness "Kami-zumo," the very origin of that ritual. It has continued without interruption since 1717 — over 300 years — and is registered as a Kyoto City Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
Wrestlers chosen from the east and west from the "Ujiko," the people who protect the local shrine, hold a piece of white paper containing purifying salt in their mouths as they step into the ring, and compete in two bouts.
The matches always end in a draw of one win each, a rule that represents a pledge to the gods to "live without conflict, helping one another."
Watching the bouts in a quiet and solemn atmosphere is a valuable experience that reveals the true origins of sumo.
Following the Kami-zumo, there is also a dedicated sumo tournament for local children, as well as "Akachan no Dohyo-iri," in which a sumo wrestler holds a baby and steps up onto the ring.

Choyo Shinji & Karasu-zumo

This is a sacred ritual with over a thousand years of history, held every year on September 9th at Kamigamo Shrine, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. September 9th is a traditional milestone in Japan known as "Choyo no Sekku."
On this day, drinking sake with chrysanthemum flowers floating in it is said to bring longevity and ward off misfortune, and after the ritual, this sake is offered free of charge to visitors as well.
I have tried it myself, and it filled me with a solemn sense of occasion, as though something good were about to happen.
A particular highlight of this Kyoto event in September 2026 is "Karasu-zumo." A humorous spectacle unfolds as people dressed in white robes imitate the calls of crows and perform bird-like movements in front of the ring.
After that, local children enthusiastically compete in a sumo event, which is a truly heartwarming sight.

If You Visit Kyoto in September, It's Also Recommended to Stay Until October to Enjoy "Moon Viewing"

If you're visiting Kyoto in autumn anyway, I recommend setting your stay period until early October. Early October is the time of "Chushu no Meigetsu" (Mid-Autumn Moon), and traditional Japanese events called "Moon Viewing" are held at various locations in Kyoto.
"Chushu no Meigetsu" is a traditional Japanese custom of appreciating the most beautiful full moon seen in autumn, which falls on October 6, 2026. This day is considered a special night spent gazing at the moon while giving thanks for autumn's harvest.
"Moon Viewing" events that celebrate this tradition are held at temples, shrines, and gardens throughout Kyoto, where you can enjoy traditional Japanese music, dance, and fantastic illuminations. This extends the Kyoto Event September 2026 season into October.
The experience of quietly savoring the beauty of the moon in harmony with nature should be a precious opportunity to physically feel Japanese views of nature and spiritual culture.

In September Kyoto, We Also Recommend Enjoying the Traditional "Noryo-yuka" Along the Kamo River
Noryo-yuka, known as a summer tradition of Kyoto, refers to seating areas set up along the Kamo River. This is a traditional style where you can dine while feeling the river's murmur and cool breeze, with many establishments setting them up from May to the end of September.
September is an excellent timing when you can still feel the remaining heat while also sensing the signs of autumn. During twilight hours, the lights reflected on the river surface and the atmospheric townscape are beautiful, allowing you to spend quiet and luxurious time that's quintessentially Kyoto.
If you visit Kyoto in September, please experience dining in this special space. Note that Noryo-yuka is popular, so we recommend making reservations in advance.

Kyo-French Pontocho Kishimoto

"Kyo-French Pontocho Kishimoto" is a restaurant where you can enjoy Kyoto-style French cuisine on Noryo-yuka. Using abundant summer Kyoto ingredients like pike conger eel and Kamo eggplant, they create an exquisite fusion of French techniques and Kyoto's seasoning culture, such as steak with wasabi, duck with black shichimi spice, and sauces with soy sauce as a hidden flavor.
When I ate at this restaurant, I truly experienced a uniquely Japanese French cuisine that can only be obtained here.
You can dine at comfortable table seating while enjoying the beautiful view of Kamo River's cool breeze. This is the perfect restaurant for food connoisseurs who want to taste distinctly Kyoto-style French cuisine.

Cuisine Ryokan Tsuruse

"Tsuruse" is a long-established cuisine ryokan with over 100 years of history, where you can enjoy meals on spacious Noryo-yuka set up along the Kamo River.
What's served are traditional Japanese courses that make use of seasonal ingredients. When I visited, the sun was just beginning to set, the wind was very pleasant, and I experienced a sensation where not just the taste of the food but all five senses were healed.
While the building has character, each dish enjoyed in the open air atmosphere reflects the heart of Japanese hospitality.
This is recommended for those who want to enjoy delicate Japanese cuisine while fully experiencing the charm of Noryo-yuka where you can become one with nature.

Pontocho Takara

"Pontocho Takara" is a restaurant where you can enjoy Japanese courses using premium ingredients like wagyu beef, duck, pike conger eel, fugu, and soft-shell turtle, along with seasonal Kyoto vegetables.
The recommendation for this season is the pike conger eel course. Pike conger eel is a representative ingredient of summer Kyoto. You can enjoy dishes full of seasonal character, such as Hamo shabu-shabu (pike conger eel hot pot) and Yubiki-style hamo sashimi (chilled parboiled sea eel with plum sauce).
On the day I had the pike conger eel course, the evening breeze was pleasant, and I savored the elegant taste of pike conger eel along with the cool breeze on Noryo-yuka.
This is truly a luxurious time unique to Kyoto where the quiet river flow intersects with seasonal flavors. This is the perfect establishment for those who want to enjoy tradition and seasonal deliciousness at once.

TOWERLAND - ROOFTOP BAR & BBQ

TOWERLAND is a rooftop BBQ & bar that can be enjoyed on top of Kyoto Tower, the symbol of Kyoto. From 45 meters above ground, you can enjoy premium meat and seafood grills, as well as à la carte food while overlooking the cityscape of Kyoto.
My recommendation is the variety of craft cocktails that let you feel the essence of Kyoto. They offer unique Japanese tastes that can only be experienced here, such as gin and tonic using Sansho (Japanese pepper) spice, rum and coke with Kyobancha (roasted Kyoto-style green tea), and soda using Tamanohikari sake.

At "Nature Beer Terrace 2026," you can enjoy vegetable-centered cuisine using Kyo-vegetables on open-air terrace seats with high ceilings or in a green-filled interior surrounded by plants. Kyo-vegetables are seasonal vegetables grown using traditional Kyoto cultivation methods, characterized by their deep, rich flavors.
The "Hyssop's Choice Set Meal" I had during lunchtime beautifully arranges small dishes using Kyo-vegetables on a plate. Based on Japanese flavors, Asian and Western elements are well-balanced, and I was surprised with each bite. It was a highly satisfying dish that offers both visual splendor and gentle, body-friendly flavors.
