Kanazawa is the capital city of Ishikawa prefecture. Accessible in 2.5 hours by Shinkansen from Tokyo, it has gained popularity as a tourist destination where visitors can enjoy history and art.
Kanazawa is a city that flourished during the Edo era (1603-1868) and has many historical buildings. There are plenty of spots where you can feel Japanese tradition while walking, including Kanazawa castle.
Additionally, thanks to its coastal geography, the area is blessed with seafood, offering fresh and high-quality seafood. The rich food culture is also one of its attractions, including traditional vegetables called "Kaga-Yasai" that take advantage of Kanazawa's climate.
Such a city full of historical and culinary attractions, Kanazawa is also recommended for family trips with children. This time, we will introduce restaurants that families can enjoy, along with tourist destinations.

Leave the tourist spot guidance to local guides who know Kanazawa inside out!

For those who want to fully enjoy Kanazawa sightseeing, I also recommend participating in tours provided by Magical trip. In the tours, you'll enjoy sightseeing with friendly guides knowledgeable about local history and culture. Since everything is explained in English, you can encounter learning and discoveries that you can't get from independent travel.
The tours visit must-see spots for Kanazawa sightseeing, including Omicho Market, Kenroku-en, and Kanazawa castle, which are also introduced in this article. The content allows you to enjoy the charm of history, culture, and food.
During the tour, lunch featuring local ingredients and matcha tea experiences at a TeaHouse are included, so even children can enjoy sightseeing at a comfortable pace. It's a recommended tour that families can feel safe with.

When visiting Kanazawa with children in 2025, you'll find numerous family-friendly attractions that combine cultural experiences with fun activities. After exploring these wonderful spots, you might want to check out Kanazawa Restaurant with Kids 2025 options to complete your family adventure with delicious local cuisine.
Kenroku-en

"Kenroku-en" is a Japanese garden located in the center of Kanazawa. Known as one of Japan's three most beautiful gardens, you can experience the beauty of Japanese nature while walking through the grounds. The spacious 11.4-hectare area is open and expansive, allowing you to enjoy a refreshing stroll.
It is cherished as a spot where you can enjoy nature throughout the four seasons - cherry blossoms in spring, autumn foliage in fall, and snow in winter - and many tourists visit to enjoy the scenery.
The garden features many waterside areas including streams and ponds, reminding visitors that water's bounty supports Japan's natural beauty. Walking while searching for koi fish, wild birds, and insects will feel like an adventure for children.

Kanazawa Castle

"Kanazawa Castle" is a castle built in 1583. The Edo era warlord "Maeda Toshiie" became the castle lord and developed the town of Kanazawa from this location, transforming it into a major city ranking after Tokyo (Edo), Osaka, and Kyoto.
Although the castle lost its main tower to lightning in 1602, impressive gates and stone walls remain on the grounds, allowing visitors to experience Japanese history up close.
You can actually enter "Gojukken Nagaya," a storehouse that was used to store weapons and daily necessities. The restored wooden pillars and beams showcase the beauty of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
This spot is cherished as a local relaxation area alongside Kenroku-en. Be sure to visit both locations to enjoy Kanazawa's history.

Omicho Market

"Omicho Market" is a vibrant market with 300 years of history. The market displays fresh seafood, fruits, and vegetables, and is a popular spot where you can experience Kanazawa's food culture with all five senses.
Within the market, there are many restaurants serving food made with fresh ingredients, and the aroma of grilled seafood whets the appetite. One of my favorite ways to spend time here is enjoying a food walk while eating food sold at storefront stalls.
The market displays seafood representing Kanazawa, such as crab and shellfish, which can be seen up close, making it a learning experience as well.
If you find ingredients or products that catch your interest, please don't hesitate to speak with the shop owners. Enjoying conversation with store staff while shopping is one of the real pleasures of the market.

21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

"21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa" is a museum that houses and exhibits contemporary art from Japan and abroad.
Many of the permanent exhibition works displayed outside can actually be entered and experienced, making it perfect for families with curious young children.
Among these, the representative work "The Swimming Pool" is the museum's signature piece, where you can enjoy the mysterious sensation of being underwater that can only be experienced here.
Kids' spaces and children's workshops are also implemented, allowing you to not only view the works but also enjoy interaction with local children. This is a recommended spot where families can spend an entire day through art.

Chirihama Beach

"Chirihama Beach" is the only coast in Japan where you can drive your car along the sandy beach at the water's edge. On the beautiful sandy beach that stretches for about 8km, you can experience a moment that feels like being immersed in a movie scene.
The sunset time is especially beautiful, and the glow of the orange sun and sparkling particles of light illuminating the sea will become an unforgettable memory for your family.
The sand grains are fine, so it feels pleasant to walk barefoot along the coast, and searching for seashells at the water's edge is like a treasure hunt that even I get absorbed in like a child. You can also enjoy swimming in the sea from mid-July to mid-August.
※There are days when restrictions are imposed due to weather conditions and driving on the coast is not possible. It's reassuring to check the restriction information in advance before heading there.
