What is Shirakawa-go?

What is Shirakawa-go?

When you think of Japan's original landscape, Shirakawa-go comes to mind. This village is located in the mountainous region of Gifu prefecture and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Currently, about 500 villagers still live there, supporting each other with a spirit called "Yui."

The symbol of Shirakawa-go is the houses called Gassho-zukuri, which have Kayabuki roofs (Thatching Roofs) that look like hands pressed together in prayer. Gassho-zukuri protected houses from snow and supported sericulture, which was the main industry.

Everywhere you look, you'll find emotionally rich everyday scenery - from the fragrance of Irori (hearth) that smokes the Gassho-zukuri houses, to the lights leaking from houses reflected in the snow at night.

Why is the Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go route so popular?

Why is the Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go route so popular?

Although Shirakawa-go is located in the mountains and seems difficult to access from outside, you can reach it in just 90 minutes by shuttle bus from Kanazawa.

Kanazawa has direct Shinkansen and limited express trains operating from Tokyo and Osaka, making access from major cities excellent. It's an indispensable city supporting transportation in the Hokuriku area, serving as a base for tourism in the Hokuriku region and as an intermediate point to the next destination.

Kanazawa itself is packed with attractive tourist spots where you can fully enjoy the food and historical attractions that are essential when visiting Japan. When going to Shirakawa-go, we recommend combining it with Kanazawa sightseeing and organizing a two-day travel plan.

Half a day is sufficient for sightseeing in Shirakawa-go itself

Half a day is sufficient for sightseeing in Shirakawa-go itself

Shirakawa-go is a village that extends about 500 meters from north to south. The main tourist spots representing the village are concentrated in close proximity, so half a day is sufficient to enjoy sightseeing.

This time, to help you enjoy sightseeing at a leisurely pace, we'll introduce a recommended itinerary that includes break times such as lunch time. The plan includes not only the Gassho-zukuri that symbolizes Shirakawa-go, but also food tasting and hot spring tourism, so you can enjoy a fulfilling day.

For those who want to tour efficiently or those who want to spend time enjoying spots of particular interest, please pick out only what interests you and use it for creating your itinerary.

Departing from Kanazawa! One Day Itinerary to Enjoy Shirakawa-go

Now, let's begin the one-day itinerary from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go. We'll introduce the recommended tourist spots in the order you should visit them, so please read along as if you're enjoying the trip together.

9:00AM: Departure from Kanazawa

Direct shuttle buses operate from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go. Multiple bus companies operate buses from Kanazawa station to Shirakawa-go, but most buses require reservations, so please be sure to make reservations in advance.

My recommendation is the Hokutetsu bus departing at 9:10. It arrives in Shirakawa-go at 10:35, so you can do sightseeing according to this itinerary.

Although there are restrooms on the bus, it's reassuring to use the station restrooms before boarding. Also, since the inside of the bus is dry, purchase drinks at the station. We recommend arriving at Kanazawa station about 30 minutes early to secure time for purchasing drinks and using the restroom.

Many shops in Shirakawa-go are individual stores, and many don't support cashless payments, so be sure to bring plenty of cash.

10:30AM: Looking down at the entire Shirakawa-go from the observation deck

10:30AM: Looking down at the entire Shirakawa-go from the observation deck

When you arrive in Shirakawa-go, first go to the observation deck where you can overlook the entire village. By first heading to the observation deck and taking in the full view of Shirakawa-go, you can get a feel for what kind of place this region is and enjoy a more dramatic day.

When looking at Shirakawa-go from the observation deck, you'll notice that all the houses face the same direction. This is wisdom to protect the thatched roofs from the moisture of snow and rain by orienting the roofs east-west to extend the hours of sunlight.

In this observation deck area, there are two observation decks: the Ogimachi Castle Observation Deck where you can experience the atmosphere of village life, and the Shiroyama Tenshukaku Observation Deck where you can overlook the surrounding mountains as well. Be sure to visit both and enjoy the spectacular views of Shirakawa-go surrounded by magnificent nature.

We recommend using the shuttle bus to the observation deck that runs every 20 minutes

We recommend using the shuttle bus that operates at 20-minute intervals to the observation deck. It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the observation deck. Using the shuttle bus saves sightseeing time and helps conserve energy for afternoon sightseeing.

Once you arrive at the observation deck, check the departure time of the return bus and use your time effectively to enjoy the view from the observation deck.

Many people want to visit Shirakawa-go during winter season and enjoy the view from the observation deck, but the shuttle bus may be suspended on days when visibility is poor due to snow accumulation or bad weather.

If you walk to the top, the road is covered with snow and regular sneakers are dangerous, so wearing snow boots is reassuring.

11:30AM: Enjoy Early Lunch to Avoid Crowds

Shirakawa-go has an environment suitable for cultivating soybeans and buckwheat flour, and these foods have been treasured for many years as staples that support the local community. These grains, which can be preserved during the difficult winter months when food is hard to obtain and are highly nutritious, were essential grains that served as substitutes for rice in the lives of Shirakawa-go people.

Therefore, Shirakawa-go still has an abundance of restaurants where you can enjoy unique local dishes using soba and tofu. Please enjoy the combination of fresh local ingredients and traditional flavors.

Restaurants in Shirakawa-go, a popular tourist destination, start getting crowded after 12:00 PM. To avoid crowds and enjoy lunchtime comfortably, we recommend having lunch before 12:00 PM.

*Many shops in Shirakawa-go have irregular holidays, so if you have a specific restaurant in mind, please check their operating days via social media or phone.

Hakusuien

Hakusuieng

"Hakusuien" is a restaurant where you can taste "Hidagyu," a brand beef raised in the nature-rich "Hida region" next to Shirakawa-go. Hidagyu is a representative brand beef of Japan, characterized by its marbled, melt-in-your-mouth juicy flavor.

At Hakusuien, you can enjoy Hidagyu with Hoba miso. Hoba refers to magnolia leaves, on which miso, vegetables, and meat are placed and cooked over fire. The cooking is done on small tabletop burners, so you can enjoy the aroma of the leaves and ingredients being warmed by the flames right in front of you.

The dishes are served as set menus along with small bowls of regional representative dishes such as soba and tofu, in addition to Hidagyu. The colorful small plates make for excellent photos and are very appetizing. This restaurant is also recommended for those who want to enjoy a variety of local dishes from this area.

Shirakawago Restaurant Irori

Shirakawago Restaurant Irori

"Irori" is a restaurant where you can enjoy traditional Shirakawa-go cuisine. Starting with representative local dishes of the area like Hoba miso and Hidagyu, Irori allows you to taste regional home cooking that local people usually enjoy.

Among the menu items, my recommendation is the set menu featuring Shirakawa-go's representative local dishes as main courses. You can choose from 9 varieties including Tororo (a sticky potato dish), Tofu Grilled on an Iron that has been loved in this area for many years, and Keichan (chicken marinated in soy sauce or miso). The set menu also includes fish, mountain vegetables, tofu, and soba, making it attractive for experiencing Shirakawa-go's food culture all at once.

There are also plenty of single-item menus like udon and soba, so it's recommended for those who want to have a light meal.

Nomura

"Nomura" is a restaurant where you can savor soba made from buckwheat flour harvested in Shirakawa-mura. The soba served at Nomura is freshly made soba prepared in the shop every morning.

The charm of freshly made soba lies in its high aroma and smooth texture. With one bite, the aroma of buckwheat flour spreads throughout your mouth. The combination of gentle flavor reminiscent of Shirakawa-go's rustic warmth and the smooth texture that goes down the throat pleasantly is perfect for those who want to enjoy the region's charm through cuisine.

Nomura is also well-known for its quick food service, making it recommended for those who want to enjoy their meal speedily.

12:30PM: Tour Tourist Attractions Where You Can Enjoy Shirakawa-go's Traditions

After enjoying lunch, let's start exploring Shirakawa-go in earnest! Beginning with the Gassho-zukuri that represents the village scenery, Shirakawa-go has abundant spots where you can experience the charm of Japan's original landscape.

From here, I'll introduce 5 essential recommended spots for Shirakawa-go tourism.

National Important Cultural Property Wada House

National Important Cultural Property Wada House
Source:Shirakawa-go Sightseeing Official website

When it comes to representative Gassho-zukuri houses, the Wada House boasts the largest size among Shirakawa-go's houses.

Built in the late Edo era of the 1800s, the Wada House is also registered as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. In mountainous Shirakawa-go, finding land to build houses was difficult, so relatives gathered in large houses, and at peak times, 20 people lived in this house.

While descendants still live in the Wada House today, part of the house is open to the public, allowing visitors to glimpse the lifestyle of that era. Around the traditional Japanese hearth "Irori," kitchen utensils used at that time are displayed, bringing back scenes of the families who once lived there. On the second floor, sericulture was practiced, and you can also observe the underside of the Kayabuki roof.

Bell Tower Gate

Bell Tower Gate

Shirakawa-go's day begins with the sound of bells. These bells are housed in the Bell Tower Gate of Myozenji Temple. It's a building that combines the temple gate and bell tower, making it a very rare structure even throughout Japan.

While temple bell towers are often roofed with tiles, Myozenji Temple's bell tower gate is made with kayabuki. The combination of the beautiful wooden gate with detailed decorations and kayabuki further enhances the beauty of Shirakawa-go's scenery.

Minka-en is a museum that preserves 25 Gassho-zukuri buildings. These buildings were previously located elsewhere but were relocated here to preserve Shirakawa-go's history and are now open as a museum conveying life from that era.

The recreated village grounds have a peaceful atmosphere where you can feel the warmth of people's lives. Walking along the paths with small streams flowing by, the beauty of Japan's original landscape touches our hearts.

Exhibits and photographs about lifestyle and local culture are also displayed, making this an essential spot for learning about Shirakawa-go's history.

Minka-en has an attached restaurant where you can also taste freshly made soba topped with Hidagyu. For those who haven't had lunch yet, having lunch at Minka-en's restaurant is also recommended.

Kanda House

Kanda House

Kanda House is the house of the second son of the previously introduced Wada House and was also built in the late Edo era of the 1800s. Descendants still live there today, smoking the house daily with Irori fire. The fragrant and warm aroma of the flames creates a nostalgic atmosphere.

Kanda House is four stories tall and can be toured up to the top floor. Each floor displays the Irori where families gathered and conversed, tools used for sericulture, and precious items the family used with care.

From the fourth floor, which was once used as a storage room, you can also view the outside scenery. Please enjoy the scenery of Shirakawa-go while immersed in the historic atmosphere.

Hachiman Shrine Shirakawa

Hachiman Shrine Shirakawa

Hachiman Shrine Shirakawa is a shrine surrounded by large cedar trees where peaceful time flows. It's an ancient shrine that has protected this land, with its founding said to date back over 1,300 years to 708-714.

While the shrine grounds are usually quiet, it's also famous for the "Doburoku Festival," when Shirakawa-go becomes most lively during the annual mid-October celebration. This festival prays for abundant harvests and family safety, offering Doburoku to the gods and serving it to worshippers.

"Doburoku" is unfiltered sake made by fermenting grains like rice and millet. It's characterized by its white, cloudy appearance and has been drunk in this region since ancient times. During the festival, you can have unlimited refills of Doburoku for 500 yen. Please experience the charm of this shrine where Shirakawa-go's rich traditions live on.

3:30PM: Satisfy Your Appetite with Local Food Walking Tours

After enjoying your stroll through the traditional facilities, you're probably getting hungry around this time. Shirakawa-go offers an abundance of local foods that you can enjoy one-handed while walking. Please indulge in a gourmet tour while savoring the unique food culture of this region!

Gohei-mochi

Gohei-mochi

Gohei-mochi is a local dish made by coating rice with sweet and savory sauce based on miso or soy sauce and grilling it on skewers. It has been mainly eaten in the mountainous villages of central Japan, such as Gifu prefecture where Shirakawa-go is located, and neighboring Nagano prefecture.

It can be stored at room temperature for several days and can be carried during farm work, so it was highly valued during times when rice was precious.

The sauce varies by region, but in Shirakawa-go, a sauce made by kneading walnuts into miso is mainly used. The chewy texture of the paste-like rice and the flavorful sauce with its lingering fragrance create an excellent combination, making it one of my favorite local dishes.

It's quite filling, so it's a recommended dish for walking tours while satisfying your hunger.

Hida Beef Gourmet

Hida Beef Gourmet

When visiting Shirakawa-go, Hida beef gourmet is an absolute must-try cuisine. The beef raised in the beautiful natural environment has tender meat quality and exceptional umami. While known as an expensive brand beef, you can casually enjoy Hida beef while walking around Shirakawa-go.

First, I recommend the croquettes made with Hida beef mince. The exquisite flavor spreads from the crispy, freshly fried coating and creamy mashed potatoes with the taste of Hida beef.

Kondou Shoten's skewered bite-sized beef is also popular. The Hida beef grilled over charcoal gains enhanced umami through its fragrant aroma, highlighting the charm of Hida beef. Please fully enjoy the juicy umami that Hida beef possesses.

Rich Soft Serve Ice Cream

Rich Soft Serve Ice Cream
Source:Tabelog

I enjoy soft serve ice cream almost every time I visit tourist destinations. Soft serve ice cream is a classic dessert at tourist spots, and one of its charms is being able to taste regional flavors.

In Shirakawa-go, you can enjoy soft serve ice cream made with milk from Hida cattle. Hida beef milk has sweetness and richness, making it ideal for soft serve ice cream.

Particularly, Kinuyukari's soft serve ice cream is well-regarded by tourists as delicious, offering a sweet and rich flavor. Since you can add toppings like nuts or chocolate sauce, customizing it to your preference is also recommended.

5:00PM: Heal the Day's Fatigue at Shirakawa-go no Yu

Shirakawa-go no Yu
Source:Official website

After enjoying Shirakawa-go sightseeing, how about soaking in hot springs to heal the day's fatigue? Shirakawa-go no Yu is the only natural hot spring in Shirakawa-go. The ion-rich spring water warms your body from the core and heals your body tired from walking during sightseeing.

The outdoor bath with views of nature throughout the four seasons is popular, allowing you to enjoy bathing while appreciating the charm of Japan's seasons, such as autumn foliage and winter snow scenes. Winter with falling snow is my favorite season. The contrast between the coldness and warmth, with steam rising from the silver-white world, provides a special experience only available during this time.

Shirakawa-go no Yu also offers accommodation. For those who want to enjoy Shirakawa-go tourism more, staying overnight is recommended.

6:30PM〜7:30PM: Enjoy the Night Scenery of Shirakawa-go Before Departure

6:30PM〜7:30PM: Enjoy the Night Scenery of Shirakawa-go Before Departure

For those with time before their return bus, please enjoy the nighttime scenery of Shirakawa-go. The charm of nighttime Shirakawa-go lies in the starry sky you cannot encounter in cities and the lights emanating from the houses. The warm lights like bonfires bring to mind scenes of large families gathering around the irori (hearth), talking and enjoying meals together.

From January to February on specific days, illumination events are held where the entire village lights up all houses. This season also sees snowfall, and the warm Gassho-zukuri scenery spreading across the silver-white world evokes nostalgic feelings.

Shirakawa-go is also a place where people live. When strolling at night, please enjoy tourism quietly so as not to cause trouble.

If Possible, You Should Enjoy Not Only Walking Through Town but Also the Night View from the Observatory

The view from the observatory offers different charms during day and night.

For those with time and energy, climb to the observatory to see Shirakawa-go's night view.

The night view of Shirakawa-go spreading under the starry sky is fantastical, reminiscent of a fantasy world. The soft orange lights from the houses provide peace to the heart. Please enjoy the unique charm of Shirakawa-go's night view, different from urban night scenes.

Shuttle buses do not operate at night, so access is on foot. The spectacular view after your hard climb will become an unforgettable memory.

Optional Time: Departure to the Next City

Are you satisfied with your Shirakawa-go trip? From Shirakawa-go's bus terminal, you can access Kanazawa as well as various cities in Nagoya (Aichi prefecture) and Gifu prefecture.

Whether you're traveling from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go or continuing to other destinations, plan your departure to the next city according to your tourism itinerary. Since buses require reservations, make sure to purchase your return bus tickets along with your outbound tickets to secure seating.

Most souvenir shops in Shirakawa-go close by 17:00, so if you want to purchase souvenirs, it's recommended to buy them early.

Author's Recommendations! Shirakawa-go Tourist Spots to Incorporate into Your Itinerary According to Your Preferences

Besides the recommended tourist spots introduced earlier, Shirakawa-go is packed with locations where you can experience the charm and history of the village firsthand. Here are three recommended spots you'll want to incorporate into your itinerary if you have time to spare.

Deai Bridge

Deai Bridge

Deai Bridge is a 107-meter-long suspension bridge that spans the Sho River flowing through Shirakawa-go. This suspension bridge, designed to harmonize with the scenery of Shirakawa-go, is beloved as a bridge of encounters that connects the outside world with Shirakawa-go.

From the bridge, you can get a panoramic view of the Sho River and the Shirakawa-go village, giving you the feeling of being a traveler slipping back in time. If you want to experience a dramatic encounter with Shirakawa-go, please try crossing the bridge. The bridge can sway while you're crossing it, so you can also enjoy its thrilling aspect.

In winter, the road surface freezes and becomes slippery, so be careful of falls when crossing the bridge.

Shirakawa-go Tajima House Sericulture Museum

Shirakawa-go Tajima House Sericulture Museum
Source:Shirakawa-go Sightseeing Official website

The Tajima House Sericulture Museum is a museum themed around sericulture, which once supported Shirakawa-go's main industry.

Sericulture supported Shirakawa-go's main industry in the latter half of the 19th century. The well-ventilated attics of Gassho-zukuri houses and the warm smoke from the irori (hearth) on the first floor circulated warm, dry air throughout the house, creating an ideal space for sericulture. Without sericulture, the current landscape of Shirakawa-go might never have come to exist.

Although sericulture is no longer practiced in Shirakawa-go today, Tajima House still offers sericulture exhibitions and experiences. If you're lucky, you can even have an experience touching real silkworm larvae, so if you're interested, please visit.

Old Toyama Family Residence

Old Toyama Family Residence
Source:Wikipedia

The Old Toyama Family Residence is a Gassho-zukuri building constructed around 1827 and designated as a National Important Cultural Property. The Toyama family contributed greatly to the industrial development of Shirakawa-go by handling the sales of sericulture, which was the main industry of Shirakawa-go at the time, and coordinating the production of saltpeter.

The Toyama family was also famous for being a large family, with over 40 clan members living in this house at its peak. They conducted sericulture production on the second through fourth floors of the house, dug holes under the irori to make saltpeter, and the family worked together to nurture the industry.

Currently, tours are held where you can taste meals made from local ingredients while sitting around the irori. This is a precious opportunity to physically experience the dining scenes of people from that era, so if you're interested, please join.
