Experience the Arrival of Summer at the "Fukuyama Tomonoura Bentenjima Fireworks Festival" in Hiroshima in May!
The event I look forward to most among Hiroshima events in May 2026 is the Tomonoura Bentenjima Fireworks Festival. Spectacular fireworks launched from Bentenjima Island offshore light up the harbor in brilliant color. This event has continued since the Edo period (1603–1868), originally held to pray for safety at sea.
My go-to way to enjoy the evening is to buy beer and food from the festival stalls lined up along the harbor and settle in on the breakwater before the fireworks begin.
The festivities open with "Aiya-bushi," a local folk performing art in which local dancers move rhythmically to the sound of the shamisen. The "reflected fireworks" — fireworks that mirror themselves on the surface of the sea — are a beloved seasonal tradition that paints the early summer Seto Inland Sea in dazzling color.

Hiroshima Flower Festival
The Hiroshima Flower Festival is Hiroshima's largest outdoor event. The main highlight, the "Grand Flower Parade," features more than 6,000 participants including dance teams and brass bands marching colorfully along Heiwa Boulevard.
The "Flower Tower," an 8-meter-tall structure installed in Peace Memorial Park and adorned with flowers in every color, is a perfect photo spot. The product fair selling Hiroshima specialties is also highly recommended.
As evening falls, thousands of candles bearing messages of peace are lit up across the venue. In that space where time flows gently, I cannot help but reflect on the wish for peace.

Daishoin Temple Satsuki Festival
The "Satsuki Festival" held at Daishoin Temple, the oldest temple on Miyajima, is an event where visitors can enjoy the vibrant satsuki azaleas and connect with Buddhist culture during the beautiful season of fresh green leaves.
Daishoin Temple has long had close ties with the 14th Dalai Lama, who has devoted himself to activities promoting world peace, and has been deeply involved with Tibetan culture.
At this festival, visitors can see Tibetan Buddhist statues, temple treasures, and sand mandalas — works of art created with colorful sand.
This is a recommended event for those who want to experience the culture unique to a historic temple, or for those who want to feel an exotic, foreign atmosphere while still in Hiroshima.

Fukuyama Rose Festival 2026
If you want to be surrounded by gorgeous roses and indulge in a truly luxurious feeling, why not head to this event? The Fukuyama Rose Festival, where approximately one million roses color the entire city, is one of my personal favorites. It began when local residents, wishing for the reconstruction of their city after the war, planted 1,000 rose bushes.
Roses from all over the world gather at "Bara Park," the main venue. One of the most appealing aspects of this festival is that you can enjoy roses throughout the city — in shopping streets, around the station, and everywhere in between. Rose-inspired foods such as jam and soft-serve ice cream are also popular.
Whether you love roses or simply want to attend a vibrant and glamorous event, this one comes highly recommended!

Tomonoura Sightseeing Tai-ami (Sea Bream Net Fishing)
When I took my foreign friends to this event, they were absolutely delighted — and no wonder. This is an event where visitors can witness up close a traditional form of fishing that has continued since the Edo period.
A large net approximately 1,500 meters long is used to haul in schools of sea bream that gather offshore to spawn, all in one sweeping motion. The sight of fishermen pulling the net with great force as traditional fishing songs and spirited calls echo across the water is truly breathtaking. Be sure to also keep an eye on the colorful bumper-catch flags flying from each boat.
Since visitors watch from aboard a sightseeing boat, you can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Seto Inland Sea while feeling the refreshing early summer breeze — an added charm of this experience. If you are interested in traditional Japanese fishing, do not miss this opportunity!

Mantou Mitama-sai (Festival of Ten Thousand Lanterns)
Held annually in late May at Gokoku Shrine, the "Mantou Mitama-sai" is one of the most enchanting HiroshimaEvent May 2026 experiences you won't want to miss.
During this festival, approximately 2,000 lanterns are lit throughout the shrine grounds to honor the souls of ancestors. The soft, warm glow that envelops the precinct creates a dreamlike atmosphere — the kind that makes you stop and simply stare in quiet wonder.
Traditional performing arts including singing and dance are also performed on stage and are absolutely worth watching. When I visited last year, there was a sumo tournament held by children and a miko (shrine maiden) dance performance. The miko dance, in which around 100 shrine maidens perform in unison, is one of the most iconic highlights of this festival.

Takamatsuzan Daimonji Festival
The "Takamatsuzan Daimonji Festival," with a history spanning approximately 300 years, is another beloved HiroshimaEvent May 2026 that began during the Edo period following a great fire that destroyed part of the town. The festival was founded to pray for protection from fire.
A portion of Mt. Takamatsu is set alight in the shape of the kanji character meaning "big" (大). There are various theories about its significance — one being that "the shape of the character resembles a star and therefore has the power to ward off evil spirits" — though the true origin remains unclear.
Along the riverbank at the foot of the mountain, rows of handmade lanterns crafted by local elementary school children are displayed. What captivates me most is the beautiful contrast between the soft, gentle glow of the lanterns floating in the darkness and the bold, blazing character shining on the mountainside.

The "Miyajima Art Festival MAFIN," held at Daisho-in Temple, is a unique exhibition where history and contemporary art come together. The concept behind the festival is to reflect on the theme of peace through art, set on Miyajima — an island that has long been revered as a "sacred island of the gods."
Many of the works draw inspiration from the natural landscape of Miyajima, making it an experience that engages all five senses while immersing you in nature. As you wander through the temple grounds, you can feel the profound depth of history alongside the art.
In 2025, marking the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing, the festival was held on a particularly grand scale. Details for this year's event have not yet been confirmed, but if you're interested, be sure to keep an eye out for updates.

"Hiroshima Comiket" is one of the largest doujinshi conventions in the Chugoku region. A wide variety of genres are featured here, from fan-made works based on popular manga, games, music, and novels to original creations by independent creators.
In the cosplay zone, attendees dressed as their favorite characters can interact with each other and participate in photo sessions. Not only locals but also many visitors from neighboring prefectures come to enjoy this Hiroshima event in May 2026. A foreign friend of mine was amazed by the high quality of the cosplay on display.

"Hiroshima I Doll," held alongside Hiroshima Comiket, is a marketplace dedicated to dolls, figures, and other handmade works. It serves as a gathering place for doll enthusiasts and has become a popular event among dedicated fans when combined with Comiket.
A wide range of doll clothing, shoes, accessories, and more are available, making it a great spot for anyone looking to create their very own custom doll. When I visited last year, there were even individual parts for sale to build a doll completely from scratch.
There are also photography spaces for dolls and booths featuring figures and model kits, offering many different ways to enjoy the event.

Hiroshima City Forest Park "Mukashi Asobi Hiroba" (Traditional Play Square)
"Mukashi Asobi Hiroba," held at Hiroshima City Forest Park, is an event where visitors can experience nostalgic traditional Japanese games and activities. Veteran volunteer staff members are on hand to provide friendly, step-by-step guidance.
The lush, nature-rich park setting also offers hiking, picnics, and bird-watching, making it a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant fresh greenery of May. Large playground equipment and a monorail are also available for added fun.
Since the walk from the nearest bus stop to the park takes about 50 minutes along a mountain trail, it is recommended to use a rental car or taxi. A one-way taxi fare from Hiroshima Station is approximately 4,000 to 5,000 yen.

Mukaishima Hishio Beach "Sightseeing Clamming"
In Mukaishima, Onomichi City, about an hour and a half from Hiroshima, you can enjoy clamming from mid-March through mid-June. Digging through the sand to find clams feels just like a treasure hunt — it has been one of my favorite activities since childhood and makes for a truly memorable Hiroshima event in May 2026.
The Mukaishima shoreline is gently sloping with calm waves, making it safe and enjoyable for young children and first-timers alike. Being able to take in the beautiful scenery of the Seto Inland Sea right before your eyes is another highlight of the experience.
Please note that there are regulations regarding the size and quantity of clams you are allowed to collect, so be sure to check the details in advance.
After clamming, renting a bicycle to explore the nature-filled island of Mukaishima is also highly recommended!

"Hiroshima Pain Festa," held at Hiroshima Gate Park, is a must-visit event for bread lovers. Centered around the theme of "a happy life with bread close at hand," bakeries of all kinds from across Hiroshima Prefecture gather in one place.
A foreign tourist I guided last year was genuinely impressed by the sheer variety of Japanese breads on offer and the meticulous attention bakers pay to their ingredients and craftsmanship — a true highlight among Hiroshima events in May 2026.
In addition to bread, you can also enjoy handmade sweets from Hiroshima cafes and freshly brewed, exceptional coffee — a delightful bonus for any food lover.
