Hiroshima Events August 2026: 15+ Festivals, Fireworks & Peace Ceremonies Guide

Hiroshima Event 2026 Published: Apr 3, 2026

Hiroshima, which I consider one of Japan's most historically significant and emotionally profound cities, is a destination I deeply cherish where you can experience both solemn remembrance and vibrant cultural traditions in a uniquely meaningful way.

As someone who values understanding Japan's complex history and rich heritage, I find Hiroshima to be an essential destination that offers both educational depth and spiritual reflection.

However, due to Hiroshima's layered historical significance, cultural sites like Miyajima Island, and the delicate balance between honoring the past and celebrating present-day culture, navigating this city meaningfully can be challenging without proper context.

In fact, a Australian friend of mine visited Hiroshima but later shared, "I felt overwhelmed by the historical weight and didn't know how to properly appreciate both the memorial sites and the cultural attractions. I wished I had better guidance to understand the deeper significance."

That's why I recommend taking a tour where knowledgeable locals who are well-versed in tourist attractions, culture, and historical spots can guide you through Hiroshima. Among these, Magical Trip has been selected for TripAdvisor's Best of the Best for two consecutive years in 2024 and 2025, and their tour quality is top-notch.

If you want to deeply explore Hiroshima's peace sites, join the Hiroshima Peace (Heiwa) Walking Tour at World Heritage Sites, and if you want to enjoy historical spots and amazing food crawling in Miyajima, participate in the Miyajima Half-day Trip Historical Walking Tour.

Also, I recommend the Hiroshima Bar Hopping Food Tour that I participated in, as you can enjoy Hiroshima's local food and excellent sake.

Hiroshima sightseeing becomes two or three times more enjoyable with local guidance. If you want to deeply enjoy Hiroshima, definitely try joining a local tour!

Introduction

Hiroshima is a naturally rich city surrounded by mountains in the north and the sea in the south. The central area is highly developed with commercial facilities lined up throughout. Additionally, many factories are arranged along the coastal areas. Hiroshima is a city with strong aspects in various fields including nature, industry, and commerce.

In summer, Hiroshima hosts various events ranging from those that preserve traditional aspects to local festivals. This time, we will introduce the summer events held in Hiroshima and their highlights for this special Hiroshima Event August 2026 season.

In August 2026, Important Peace-Related Events Take Place in Hiroshima

Hiroshima was devastated by the atomic bombing on August 6, 1945. For this reason, Hiroshima hosts numerous important peace-related events in August to ensure the memory of the bombing never fades and to call for permanent world peace.

These events are part of a broader series of Hiroshima Event August 2026 commemorations that draw visitors from around the world.

On August 6, events continue throughout the entire day, prompting deep reflection on the atomic bombing — from the Peace Memorial Ceremony held at the exact moment the bomb was dropped, to the Peace Message Lantern Floating, where lanterns (traditional Japanese lighting tools) are set adrift on the river in the evening as a prayer for peace.

Peace Memorial Ceremony

Source: Wikipedia

The Peace Memorial Ceremony is a ceremony of peace dedicated to consoling the souls of atomic bomb victims and praying for peace.

A list of the deceased is offered and flowers are laid, and at 8:15 a.m. — the exact moment the bomb was dropped — a moment of silence is observed as a prayer for those who perished.

The ceremony also delivers a powerful message of peace to the world through a Peace Declaration, the Peace Song, and the release of doves, which are considered a symbol of peace.

This event takes place at the Peace Memorial Park, built at the hypocenter of the atomic bomb. It is precisely because of this place, which suffered such tremendous devastation, that such a powerful message is conveyed.

You will feel the strength of the people of Hiroshima, who have faced the deep sorrow of war and continue to live with a profound commitment to peace. I believe that sensing something from the heavy yet powerful atmosphere of this event is the very first step one can take toward peace.

Peace Message Lantern Floating

This is an event held every year on the evening of August 6 — the day the atomic bomb was dropped and the day the Peace Memorial Ceremony takes place. Approximately 10,000 lanterns are set afloat on the river that runs through the city. Lanterns are a traditional Japanese style of lamp with a paper shade.

This event traces its origins to bereaved families who lost loved ones in the atomic bombing and floated handmade lanterns down the river in their memory. In recent years, people from all over the world have come to attend this event, carrying wishes for world peace.

This river is a place where many lives were lost in the aftermath of the atomic bombing, a place where countless bodies once floated. The lanterns illuminate this river with its sorrowful history. As you gaze at their soft, warm, and beautiful light, why not let your thoughts drift toward the hope for peace?

Must-See Fireworks Festivals Held in Hiroshima in August

Onomichi Sumiyoshi Fireworks Festival

Onomichi Sumiyoshi Fireworks Festival
Source: Official website

This fireworks festival has a history of over 250 years, making it a traditional fireworks celebration. The attractive point of this festival is that you can enjoy both traditional ceremonies and fireworks.

First, regarding the traditional ceremony, a boat carrying a deity slowly proceeds across the sea. The boat is warmly illuminated with chochin (Japanese-style lanterns), and the sight of the lights slowly moving and reflecting on the water surface is fantastical.

The fireworks are also very spectacular, with 13,000 fireworks coloring the night sky. Particularly attractive are the underwater fireworks. Since underwater fireworks explode in the water, semicircular fireworks spring up from the water surface like fountains, which is very beautiful.

Both the traditional ceremony and fireworks are solemn and beautiful, while also having exciting and thrilling enjoyment. Please visit once by all means.

The Fukuyama Summer Festival is a summer festival that colors Fukuyama, featuring three consecutive events over three days from August 13th to 15th. This time we'll focus in detail on only the 1st and 3rd day festivals, but on the 2nd day there's a "yukata" event.

This event is the finale of the Fukuyama Summer Festival. It's the largest-scale fireworks festival in western Japan, with approximately 16,000 fireworks coloring Fukuyama's sky.

The concept of this fireworks festival is "Fukuyama citywide fireworks." Since the fireworks are held on the river flowing through the city, you can observe fireworks from a very wide area within the city. The highlight of this fireworks festival is the starmine (continuously launched fireworks) held over a 1.4km launch area.

The spectacular view of fireworks covering the sky as far as the eye can see can only be enjoyed here. Also, in this fireworks festival launched from the water surface right beside us, the fireworks reflecting on the river surface are a very attractive point.

Niagari Dance Festival

Niagari Dance Festival
Source: X

Niagari dance is one of Fukuyama's traditional performing arts. People dance while parading to the music of shamisen (a stringed instrument that is one of the Japanese traditional instruments). Since it has a long history, there are various variations in many aspects such as appearance, tempo, and music. For example, relatively fast-tempo ones are dances from newer eras. It's also interesting to look at the differences while watching various groups' dances.

This event includes time at the end for everyone, including the audience, to dance together. It's a simple repetition of steps: side, front, side, front, front, side, front, so even first-timers and people who aren't good at dancing can quickly enjoy dancing with smiles. Please dance together and not only see but also experience Fukuyama's traditional culture.

Yoshiwa Summer Festival Fireworks Display

The Yoshiwa Summer Festival Fireworks Display is a fireworks show held at Yoshiwa Ground as the main event of the Yoshiwa Summer Festival. Approximately 3,000 fireworks are launched, and both before and after the show, live performances by local artists take place on a special stage, filling the entire venue with excitement.

During the daytime, the festival offers hands-on activities such as sunflower picking in the sunflower field, the sale of mini sunflower pots, and corn picking. The field, with approximately 130,000 sunflowers in full bloom, is a spectacular sight, so be sure to visit before the fireworks display.

Since the daytime and nighttime venues offer entirely different atmospheres and experiences, why not visit from the daytime and enjoy a full day of festivities?

  • Date: August 2026, TBD (held on August 10 in 2025)
  • Address: Around Yoshiwa, Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture
  • Access: Approximately 5 minutes by car from Yoshiwa IC on the Chugoku Expressway

Shobara Summer Festival Fireworks Festival

This festival is a fireworks festival held in a large park called Ueno Park, where 3,000 fireworks are launched from a pond within the park. Various types and colors of fireworks are launched, so you can watch with excitement from beginning to end. What particularly excited me were the fireworks modeled after Niagara Falls. The sight of a waterfall emerging as if water were flowing is very beautiful.

Also, the recommended viewing spot for this fireworks festival is right by the lakeside. The fireworks launching right in front of you are very powerful, and the fireworks reflected on the lake surface are very beautiful. Please enjoy both from close by.

Also, food stalls line up around the pond. Being able to enjoy Japanese festival food and festival mini-games is one of the attractive points of this festival.

Yassa Fireworks Festival

Source: Official website

The Yassa Fireworks Festival is a fireworks display held on the final day of the Mihara Yassa Festival. The fireworks are launched from the sea at the mouth of the Numata River, and a unique highlight of this event is being able to enjoy not only the fireworks lighting up the night sky but also their reflections shimmering on the surface of the water.

The festival features an impressive variety of approximately 5,000 fireworks — from the signature fireworks shaped like octopus, a local specialty of Mihara, to artistic pieces crafted by carefully selected master pyrotechnicians from across Japan, and large-scale shells including shells as big as 10-go.

The show runs for 40 minutes, but the dazzling succession of spectacular fireworks makes the time fly by in an instant.

  • Date: August 2026, TBD (held on August 10, 2025, later rescheduled to December 7)
  • Address: Near Wada-oki, Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture
  • Access: 40 minutes on foot from JR Mihara Station
  • Admission: Free (paid seating available)

Also Enjoy the Mihara Yassa Festival Together!

If you are coming to see the Yassa Fireworks Festival, why not also enjoy the Mihara Yassa Festival while you are there?

The Mihara Yassa Festival is one of the most representative summer festivals in the Chugoku region, attracting approximately 400,000 visitors every year. A highlight of the festival is the Yassa Dance, which traces its origins to celebrations marking the construction of Mihara Castle during the Warring States period.

The Yassa Dance features approximately 80 teams and around 7,000 dancers dancing freely while calling out "Yassa, Yassa" to one another, and visitors can delight in the wonderfully unique and individual styles each dancer brings to the performance. The dance is performed to upbeat music — watching it, I found myself wanting to join in.

The venue also features local food stalls serving Mihara's renowned octopus dishes, so be sure to savor the local cuisine as you take in the lively and energetic dancing!

  • Date: August 2026, TBD (held from August 8–10 in 2025)
  • Address: 1-1 Shiro-machi, Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture
  • Access: A short walk from Mihara Station
  • Admission: Free

Sera Chamber of Commerce Summer Festival Fireworks

The Sera Chamber of Commerce Summer Festival Fireworks is a fireworks festival held annually on August 20 in Sera Town, and is one of the most anticipated Hiroshima Events in August 2026. Approximately 1,000 fireworks, including star mines and rapid-fire launches, are set off to paint the night sky in vivid colors.

At the venue, Enoki Park, food stalls and food trucks will be set up, along with live shows on a special stage to add to the excitement of the fireworks display.

On the same day, the "Kozan Hatsuka Ebisu Festival," a festival with over 300 years of history, will also be held in the area around Imakoyasan Street.

At the festival, you can see the "Danjiri Hanging Dolls," which features children riding on danjiri floats, as well as "Niwaka Kyogen," in which young people perform short comedic plays with social satire from atop the danjiri (decorated floats used in festivals). Be sure to enjoy these alongside the fireworks!

  • Date: August 20, 2026 (Held on August 20, 2025)
  • Address: Higashiuehara, Sera-cho, Sera-gun, Hiroshima Prefecture
  • Access: Approximately 5 minutes from "Sera IC" on the Onomichi-Matsue Expressway

Miyahama Onsen Festival

Source: Official website

The Miyahama Onsen Festival is a comprehensive festival held at the Miyahama Onsen Ground Golf Course, where visitors can enjoy hands-on experiences, food, fireworks, and more. This is one of the unique Hiroshima Events in August 2026 that offers one-of-a-kind activities you simply cannot find anywhere else.

At the venue, you can take part in unique experiences only available here, such as the "World Pillow Fighting Championship," "Miyajima Table Tennis," where participants battle using rice paddles (flat scoops used to mix and serve rice), and the "Drone UFO Catcher."

I personally challenged the "Drone UFO Catcher" and managed to win a prize! The controls are simple, so even first-timers can give it a go without hesitation!

The fireworks that close out the festival use commercially available fireworks, but since they are launched close to the viewing area, you can enjoy the display with an impressive sense of scale.

Kisa Fureai Festival Fireworks

Source: Official website

The Kisa Fureai Festival Fireworks is a fireworks display held as the main event of the "Kisa Community Festival" at Shinsui Park. This is truly one of the most memorable Hiroshima Events in August 2026 for those seeking a blend of tradition and natural beauty.

The highlight is being able to watch approximately 2,500 fireworks alongside handmade lanterns that are set adrift on the Umaarai River.

The mystical scenery of the river blanketed in lanterns of various designs, combined with the star mine-centered fireworks, is truly breathtaking — I was so captivated that I even forgot to chat with my friends.

Beyond the fireworks, why not also enjoy the stage performances, Bon Odori dancing, and food stalls at the festival, and make the most of summer in Kisa?

  • Date: August 15, 2026 (Held on August 15, 2025)
  • Address: 371 Kisa-cho Kisa, Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture
  • Access: 10-minute walk from Kisa Station

The Shakunage Lake Cooling Fireworks Festival is a fireworks event held at Fukutomi Lakeside Village Roadside Station. Not only can you view approximately 2,000 fireworks up close, but you can also see the fireworks reflected on the surface of the lake, making it a popular event praised for letting you enjoy the display twice over.

This is one of the most scenic Hiroshima Events in August 2026.

The well-equipped paid seating options are also well-received, with the "Royal Seats" offering prime viewing spots and the "Gororin Seats" — where you can lie back and relax — being particularly popular.

On the same day, a "Summer Evening Festival" featuring stage events, a traditional fair, and food trucks will also be held. Spend the daytime having fun at the festival, then settle in for an evening of fireworks by the tranquil lakeside and create unforgettable summer memories.

Summer Festival Events in August Hiroshima to Experience Japanese Culture and Summer Traditions

Tamatori Festival

Tamatoru Festival
Source: Dive! Hiroshima

This festival is an event with a long history, having been passed down for 400 years while changing its form over time. Currently, this event takes place on the sea. An 8-meter scaffold is built on the sea, from which a wooden ball is suspended. Young men wearing only loincloths (dressed like sumo wrestlers) strive to grab this ball by forming pyramids and giving each other shoulder rides. Afterward, they carry the ball to the goal point. This ball is said to grant wishes, and happiness is believed to come to those who drop the ball and those who carry it to the goal.

Whether the ball can be grabbed or not, the audience watches excitedly, and the entire venue comes together in support. This festival is a traditional event that has long connected the hearts of local people. How about experiencing the feeling of becoming part of the community while cheering together?

Innoshima Suigun Festival - Sea Festival

Innoshima Suigun Festival Sea Festival
Source: Official website

This is an event derived from Japan's largest pirates, known as the Murakami Suigun (Navy). At this event, races are held over 1km using boats that recreate the small wooden vessels used for communication and reconnaissance by these maritime warriors. The sight of 14 strong rowers moving in perfect synchronization to the rhythm of Japanese drums, creating splashes as they advance, is truly spectacular.

When people think of pirates, many might imagine acts of robbery on the high seas, but the Murakami Suigun protected maritime safety and maintained order in transportation and distribution. The expressions of those striving for safety were probably the same serious gazes you can see at this festival. Please enjoy the powerful spectacle while also reflecting on these former champions of justice.

There's also an experiential corner where you can try rowing these boats yourself, which is highly recommended.

Source: Official website

Actually, the Innoshima Suigun Festival just introduced consists of both the Sea Festival and Island Fire Festival as one combined event. Originally held for 22 consecutive days, the Island Fire Festival's schedule has been moved to September from the perspective of heatstroke prevention.

The Island Fire Festival is an event that recreates the triumphant ceremony after the Murakami Suigun's return. It features formation displays by armored warriors, drum performances, and torch performances. Since this festival maintains traditional aspects, it's recommended for those interested in pirate ceremonies to participate in this event as well.
