Hiroshima

Mid-October to early November

Early November to late November

Here, we will predict the start time and peak viewing period for Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025.

Hiroshima is characterized by significant temperature differences between regions, allowing visitors to enjoy autumn foliage for an extended period from the northern to southern parts of the prefecture. In Hiroshima, autumn foliage can typically be enjoyed from mid-October to early November in colder areas such as the northern part of the prefecture and mountainous regions, and from early to late November in warmer areas centered around the southern part of the prefecture.

Since the pace of autumn foliage has not been disrupted in recent years, for Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025, the color change is expected to begin in mid-October in colder areas and early November in warmer areas, with peak viewing predicted for early November in colder areas and late November in warmer areas.

What Autumn Foliage Spots Should You Enjoy When Coming to Hiroshima?

What autumn foliage spots should you enjoy when visiting Hiroshima?

Hiroshima offers not only famous tourist attractions but also abundant green nature and historic shrines with many highlights, where you can enjoy autumn foliage together in the surrounding areas during fall.

If you have time, we recommend visiting autumn foliage spots away from urban areas, but if time is limited, we suggest touring only the autumn foliage spots that can be enjoyed together with World Heritage sites like Miyajima and the Atomic Bomb Dome.

The collaboration between leaves that turn various colors including red, yellow, and orange with famous sites is spectacular and captivating to viewers.

Author's Selection! Autumn Foliage You Can Enjoy at Hiroshima's Famous Tourist Destinations

From here, we will introduce the author's carefully selected autumn foliage that can be enjoyed at Hiroshima's famous tourist destinations.

Famous tourist spots are magnificently adorned with autumn foliage, creating scenery that can only be seen during this season. Since you can see diverse autumn foliage including maple, ginkgo, and Japanese maple in various situations, we also recommend finding spots that suit your preferences.

Miyajima Area

First, let's introduce the Miyajima area.

Miyajima is a small island floating in Hiroshima Bay, accessible by ferry from the mainland. It's always bustling with people regardless of weekdays or holidays, packed with attractions including the World Heritage Itsukushima Shrine, the nature-rich Misen, and wild deer.

Daisho-in

Source:Google Maps

Daisho-in is a place associated with Kobo Daishi (the founder of Shingon Buddhism) and is Miyajima's oldest temple. It's highly effective for warding off evil and bringing good fortune, and is known as one of "Japan's Three Great Temples for Averting Calamities and Bringing Good Fortune."

The temple grounds are planted with maple and Japanese maple trees, and during the peak autumn foliage season, "Red Maple Illumination" is held. The fantastic scenery of colored autumn foliage emerging against the darkness, nestling close to the prestigious temple, creates a different atmosphere from daytime and has earned an excellent reputation.

Why not experience the history of Miyajima firsthand while enjoying the illuminated autumn foliage?

The autumn foliage begins to change color in early November, with peak viewing from mid to late November.

Momijidani

Momijidani is a natural park at the foot of Misen Primeval Forest and is one of the most popular autumn foliage spots on Miyajima. Hiroshima Prefecture's famous confection "Momiji manju" is said to have been created in the Meiji period using Momijidani as a model.

The highlight of the autumn foliage is the "Momiji Bridge" at the park entrance. The competition between the vermillion-painted bridge and the bright red autumn foliage is spectacular - when I first saw it, I was so captivated that I forgot to take photos.

Within the park, you can see various types of autumn foliage including Iroha maple, large maple, and striped maple, making it an attractive point that allows for long-term autumn foliage viewing.

Shinomiya Shrine

Shinomiya Shrine is located near the entrance of Momijidani and is a shrine related to Itsukushima Shrine. The shrine sits atop stone steps surrounded by trees, and during autumn foliage season, you can see a lively scene where red, yellow, and green colors intermingle.

My recommended composition is an angle that centers on the long stone steps leading from the plaza below the shrine to Shinomiya Shrine, decorated with autumn foliage on both sides. This well-balanced composition allows even amateurs to capture shots they'll want to show off to friends.

Although you must climb the long stone steps to reach the shrine, enjoying the beautiful autumn foliage makes your steps feel lighter, allowing you to climb without feeling the strain.

Omoto Park

Source:Google Maps

Omoto Park is a park located along the Omoto River, featuring a primeval fir forest with trees several hundred years old along the coastline, creating a unique spot where the scents of tide and trees blend together. The park offers spectacular views of cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage in fall, earning it recognition as one of the "Eight Views of Itsukushima."

The park is located slightly away from the main street, with fewer crowds, allowing visitors to leisurely enjoy the autumn foliage viewing - making it one of my favorite foliage spots for Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025. Miyajima's famous deer also roam throughout the park, and I was lucky enough to capture a perfect shot of deer with the autumn colors!

The autumn colors begin to change in early November, with peak viewing from mid to late November.

Senjokaku

Senjokaku is a shrine whose construction was ordered by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587, but remains unfinished to this day due to Toyotomi Hideyoshi's death. It is the largest wooden structure on Miyajima, with such vast grounds equivalent to 857 tatami mats that it was named Senjokaku (Thousand Tatami).

The highlight of the autumn foliage here is the large ginkgo tree that turns golden yellow. Viewing the ginkgo from inside the building, which has no lighting and remains dim even during daytime, makes the yellow autumn colors appear more emphasized and brilliantly radiant. Beyond the ginkgo, you can also view Miyajima's townscape, enjoying a spectacular view unique to this location.

The autumn colors begin to change in late November, with peak viewing in early December.

Gokurakuji

Source:WEATHER NEWS

Gokurakuji is a historic temple established in 731, located near the summit of Mount Gokurakuji.

Since Gokurakuji sits at an elevation of 693 meters, you can view the autumn foliage of about 30 Japanese maples and red oaks earlier than other locations. Particularly impressive is the prefecture's largest red oak tree, over 300 years old and 20 meters tall - its autumn transformation is truly magnificent, and I was completely overwhelmed by its presence.

The temple grounds include an observation deck where you can enjoy both the autumn foliage and views of Miyajima's townscape and the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. Why not try mountain climbing while appreciating the red and yellow autumn colors, savoring nature's changing beauty for your Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025 experience?

Hiroshima City

Next, about Hiroshima City.

Hiroshima City is the prefectural capital of Hiroshima Prefecture and is also known as a peace city due to its experience of atomic bombing. Therefore, the World Heritage Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Memorial Park attract many tourists from both domestic and international locations.

It has the largest population in the Chugoku region, including Hiroshima Prefecture, and serves as the political, economic, and cultural center.

Shukkei-en Garden

Shukkei-en Garden is a garden created in 1620 by Asano Nagaakira, the first leader of the Hiroshima Asano clan (a group that once governed the Hiroshima area). The garden is renowned for offering seasonal landscapes throughout the year - cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn foliage in fall, and plum blossoms in winter.

In autumn, you can observe various trees like maples, wax trees, and zelkovas changing into different colors. The highlight is the autumn foliage reflected on the water surface of the pond - I became so absorbed in this elegant scenery that I couldn't stop taking photos. During the autumn foliage season, the "Momiji Festival" is held, featuring popular illuminations from evening hours.

The autumn colors begin to change in early November, with peak viewing from mid-November to early December.

Momiji Valley at Hiroshima Prefecture Greening Center

Source:Google Maps

Momiji Valley at the Hiroshima Prefecture Greening Center is a lush green park located about 60 minutes by car from central Hiroshima City.

The highlight is the park's symbol tree - a large Japanese maple that boasts the largest size in the prefecture. The sight of this overwhelmingly impressive large maple changing colors is truly powerful! You can also enjoy the tunnel of Japanese maples and the autumn foliage of the rare Japanese birch trees, which are uncommon in the prefecture.

During the autumn foliage season, the "Momiji Festival" is held with exciting events including stamp rallies, quiz rallies, and craft activities. Since the content allows small children to participate, this is a recommended autumn foliage spot for families visiting during Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025.

The autumn colors begin to change in mid-October, with peak viewing from late October to early November.

Mitaki-dera Temple

Mitaki-dera Temple is a temple founded by Kobo Daishi in 809, where the lined Buddhist statues and architectural structures have a long history, with multiple buildings designated as important cultural properties of the prefecture.

The lush temple grounds are planted with maple trees throughout, where you can relax and enjoy the autumn foliage while listening to the sound of leaves swaying in the wind, bird songs, and the murmuring of the waterfall that gave the temple its name.

Located a little away from the city center with fewer tourists, this is also an attractive point. If time permits, why not extend your journey a little and leisurely enjoy the autumn foliage to the fullest? The autumn leaves begin to change color in mid-October, with the best viewing period from late October to early November - making it a perfect spot for your Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025 experience.

Fudo-in Temple

Fudo-in Temple is a temple founded by Ashikaga Takauji during the Northern and Southern Courts period to enshrine war casualties, and is a precious building that miraculously escaped damage from the atomic bomb.

My favorite autumn foliage spot is the scenery of the bell tower (building where bells are rung), which is designated as a national important cultural property, together with the autumn leaves. Maple trees are planted surrounding the bell tower, allowing you to capture energetic photos of the bright red bell tower and the red maples together.

Since autumn foliage can be seen throughout the temple grounds, please enjoy the autumn leaves along with the historically valuable buildings. This location offers exceptional opportunities for Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025 photography.

The autumn leaves begin to change color in late October, with the best viewing period from early November to mid-November.

Author's Carefully Selected Scenic Spots! Autumn Foliage Worth Taking Time to See

From here, I will introduce scenic spots carefully selected by the author. All locations feature beautiful autumn foliage worth taking time to see. Why not take many photos that convey the Japanese spirit and introduce them to friends and family as part of your Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025 journey?

Shobara Area

The first is Shobara City.

Shobara City is located in the northeastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, where urban areas and nature coexist in good balance. Besides experiencing rich nature including peaks of about 1,200 meters, lush forests, and clear streams, it is an area blessed with food ingredients from rice cultivation, livestock farming, and agricultural products utilizing its vast land.

Taishakukyo

Taishakukyo is famous for its limestone gorge stretching about 18km in total length and is recognized as one of Japan's 100 scenic views. Within the grounds are the natural national monument "Onbashi," Japan's largest natural bridge, Dangyo Valley (a place where fish cannot swim upstream) formed about 300 million years ago, and "The Hakuun caves," a limestone cave with a depth of 200 meters, among other scattered attractions.

Taishakukyo is planted with maples and Japanese maples, with the autumn foliage viewed while crossing "Onbashi" being particularly recommended. While listening to the murmuring of the river and viewing the autumn foliage reflected on the lake surface, visitors report being released from daily hustle and bustle to taste the extraordinary - a highlight of any Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025 adventure.

This is recommended for people who want to enjoy autumn foliage while feeling the great outdoors.

The autumn leaves begin to change color in late October, with the best viewing period from early November to mid-November.

Ozeki-yama Park

Ozeki-yama Park is known as a famous spot for cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage in fall, with an observation deck in the park offering panoramic views of Miyoshi City's townscape and the Gono River.

The park is planted with Japanese maples and maples, and the walking paths in the park transform into tunnels of red and orange autumn foliage during peak season. When I visited during the beginning of leaf fall, fallen autumn leaves were spread like a carpet on the ground, creating a fantastical autumn foliage viewing experience. The scenery of the entire mountain dyed bright red during this time only is breathtakingly beautiful - a must-see for your Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025 experience.

The autumn leaves begin to change color in late October, with the best viewing period from early November to mid-November.

Sanburo-no-taki

Source:FUN! FAN! FUCHU!!

Sanburo-no-taki is characterized by water flowing down gentle rock surfaces about 30 meters long and is famous for enjoying a natural water slide. In summer, it bustles with families with children seeking coolness, and in autumn, tourists visit to see about 800 maple trees planted in the surrounding area change color.

The highlight is where autumn leaves that have fallen into the waterfall basin (where waterfall water falls) sway gracefully with the water flow. When I first saw fallen leaves flowing in the water, I was captivated by the elegant scenery.

The "Saburo no Taki Autumn Leaves Festival" is held in conjunction with the autumn foliage, featuring freshly pounded rice cakes, zenzai (sweet red bean soup), and sales of fresh local vegetables, so please participate when you go to see the autumn foliage during your Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025 visit.

The autumn leaves begin to change color in early November, with the best viewing period from mid-November to late November.

Mihara Area

The second area is Mihara City. Mihara City is located in the central-eastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture and was formed in 2005 through the merger of four cities. It is known as a transportation hub with easy access to Tokyo and Osaka, utilizing the Sanyo Shinkansen, Sanyo Expressway, and Hiroshima Airport. It is also characterized by its pleasant climate, facing the Seto Inland Sea with mild temperatures.

Buttsu-ji Temple

Buttsu-ji Temple is a temple founded in 1397, known as one of Japan's premier Zen meditation halls (Zen training centers). Also called "Autumn Foliage and Fresh Green Buttsu-ji Temple," visitors can enjoy the captivating autumn colors of maple and Japanese maple trees.

The autumn foliage spot that left the strongest impression on me was where the autumn colors were added to the scenery of the temple, river, and Kyomou Bridge. A picture-perfect landscape spread before my eyes, and I immediately shared the photos I had just taken with friends on social media. By positioning the bridge on the left and the shrine on the right in your composition, even amateurs can create a well-balanced shot.

The autumn leaves begin to change color in late October, with the best viewing period from early to mid-November.

It's renowned for allowing visitors to fully enjoy Hiroshima's natural beauty and experience the changing expressions of the four seasons across its vast grounds.

The garden features Enkianthus perulatus, dogwood, maple, and other trees, offering various types of autumn foliage. The "Sankei-en Maple Festival" is held during the autumn season, featuring food stalls by famous restaurants, taiko drum performances, and nighttime illuminations. Why not enjoy delicious cuisine while appreciating the autumn colors?

Senkoji Temple Mountain Ropeway

Senkoji Temple Mountain Ropeway is a rare ropeway in Japan that passes over shrines and temples, offering panoramic views of Onomichi Channel and the islands of the Seto Inland Sea.

I once rode this ropeway to reach Senkoji Park. The autumn foliage scenery viewed from the air at an unusual angle was more spectacular than I expected, so impressive that I rode it again. Please enjoy three minutes of autumn foliage viewing from a different perspective.

The autumn leaves begin to change color in early November, with the best viewing period from mid to late November.

Mitsuki Hachiman-gu Shrine

Mitsuki Hachiman-gu Shrine is located within "Yawata River Natural Park" and features historically valuable buildings including Important Cultural Properties.

Maple, Enkianthus perulatus, ginkgo, and other trees are planted throughout the shrine grounds and along the Yawata River, offering various expressions of autumn foliage. I visited during the early color-changing period and was able to enjoy the beautiful gradation scenery as leaves transformed from green to red and yellow.

This notable spot offers collaborations between the shrine, stone lanterns, river, and autumn foliage, allowing visitors to enjoy different atmospheres of autumn colors within the same grounds.

The autumn leaves begin to change color in early November, with the best viewing period from mid to late November.

Aki Ota Area

The third area is the Aki Ota Area. Akiota City is a town located in the northwestern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, established in 2004 through the merger of three areas. It offers easy access to Hiroshima City, the prefectural capital, and is also known as a bedroom community. Since you can experience nature up close, you can enjoy outdoor activities such as mountain climbing and canoeing.

Sandankyo Gorge

Sandankyo Gorge is a magnificent canyon stretching approximately 16km and is designated as a National Special Scenic Beauty for its spectacular landscape. Within the gorge, you can enjoy autumn foliage of maple, oak, and zelkova trees, adding splendor to the five highlights: "Kurobuchi," "Sarutobi," "Nidandaki Falls," "Sandandaki Falls," and "Mitsu Falls." The contrast between the colorful autumn leaves against the rugged rock faces and the crystal-clear water surface below is mystical, making me want to gaze at it forever.

While the autumn foliage viewed up close from the walking paths is magnificent, I also recommend taking one of the two ferry boats to leisurely enjoy the foliage while experiencing the great outdoors. This destination is a must-see for Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025 enthusiasts.

The autumn colors begin to appear in mid-October, with peak viewing from late October to mid-November.

Tsutsuga Giant Ginkgo

The Tsutsuga Giant Ginkgo is a massive ginkgo tree located within the grounds of Otoshi Shrine, standing 48m tall with a circumference of 8.2m. The ginkgo tree is estimated to be over 1,100 years old and is designated as a prefectural natural monument.

I once visited after the ginkgo's peak foliage season when the leaves had fallen. The yellow leaves dropped from the giant ginkgo spread across the ground, creating a golden landscape that made me feel like I had wandered into another dimension. There were children having fun scooping up the fallen leaves that covered the ground so thickly. This spectacular sight makes it a premier destination for Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025.

At night, the tree is illuminated, and the sight of the giant ginkgo emerging from the darkness is absolutely powerful!

The autumn colors begin to appear in mid-October, with peak viewing from late October to mid-November.

Yoshimizuen Garden

Source:Google Maps

Yoshimizuen Garden is a Japanese garden featuring a stroll-style garden (a Japanese garden designed to be appreciated while walking through it) that utilizes terrain created during the Edo period. While normally closed to the public, it opens only twice a year in June and November, where visitors can see the prefectural natural monument "Forest Green Tree Frogs" in June and "Edo Maple" in November.

The unmissable spot for autumn foliage is the "Edo Maple." These maples, which turn a blazing red, have existed since the Edo period and convey the weight of history. The scenery of the autumn maple leaves blending with the traditional Japanese architecture and pond is praised for its quintessentially Japanese character. This exclusive experience makes it a highlight of Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025.

Since this is a precious opportunity that occurs only twice a year, please be sure to visit.

The autumn colors begin to appear in early November, with peak viewing from mid to late November.

The Author's Favorite Restaurants to Enjoy Hiroshima's Exquisite Food While Viewing Autumn Foliage

Here, I'll introduce my favorite restaurants where you can enjoy Hiroshima's exquisite food while viewing autumn foliage. Dining while watching the leaves transform into various colors is a luxurious experience that will undoubtedly create unforgettable moments during your Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025 journey.

Sensuitei

Source:Official website

Sensuitei is a restaurant located within Shukkeien Garden, which has been selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Historical Gardens. Located right after entering the park's entrance gate, you can dine while appreciating the autumn foliage.

I used it during a break and ordered the matcha set, which includes matcha and Japanese sweets. While gazing at the well-maintained park's autumn foliage and enjoying the slightly bitter matcha with Japanese sweets, I was able to escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse myself in a relaxed mood.

Not only sweets but also light meals such as udon and rice balls are sold, making it recommended for light lunch use during your Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025 exploration.

Hanbee

Source:Official website

Hanbee is a Japanese restaurant where you can dine while overlooking a beautiful 1,000-tsubo Japanese garden designed by landscape architect Shigemori Mirei. The cuisine prepared by a chef who was selected as a "Contemporary Master Craftsman" in 2024 using local seasonal ingredients is exquisite, and you can spend blissful time viewing the garden colored by autumn foliage during your Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025 visit.

The most popular lunch item I ordered, the "Nagomi" set meal (served with all dishes on a tray), includes beef steak, sashimi, tempura, and small side dishes. Since you can eat various types of Japanese food little by little, you can finish it without getting bored until the end.

Not only set meals but also more casual set meals, courses, and even children's menus are available, so it can be used in various situations throughout the Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025 season.

FukuChiIn Cafe

Source:Instagram

FukuChiIn Cafe is an atmospheric cafe that recreates a 170-year-old former shukubo (accommodation facility at temples or shrines) located on the approach to Ima Koyasan, which is said to have been opened by Kobo Daishi. You can view autumn foliage beyond the fusuma (sliding doors that partition Japanese rooms).

Inside the store, they serve sweets and shojin ryori (cuisine made from plant-based ingredients) using local ingredients, including Hiroshima's native tea (tea made from tea trees grown from seeds).

The "Tea Parfait" I ordered is a parfait packed with local ingredients, including original gelato made from sencha and hojicha, sweet red bean paste, shiratama dumplings with tofu, and brown rice puffs. The slightly bitter sencha gelato and sweet red bean paste have excellent compatibility, and I finished it in no time.

The interior, which evokes the good old Japan, is perfect for savoring Japanese flavors during your Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025 experience!

Experience Exquisite Food at Local Favorite Spots with a Local Guide!

If you visit Hiroshima, where delicious food abounds during Hiroshima Autumn Foliage 2025, why not savor exquisite food at shops loved by locals together with a local guide? The Hiroshima Bar Hopping Food Tour is a tour where you can enjoy bar hopping in Hiroshima's entertainment district, the Nagarekawa area.

The first stop features Hiroshima's soul food, "okonomiyaki" (a teppan dish made by mixing flour and water batter with cabbage, meat, seafood, and other preferred ingredients, then grilling). The chef will cook the okonomiyaki right in front of you, so you can eat it fresh and hot!

At the second and third stops, you'll visit bars where you can enjoy local sake. Hiroshima is also famous for its sake breweries, with various types available from sweet to dry, light to rich flavors, so please try to find the perfect sake for you! How about grilled oysters, yakitori, or fried fish as snacks? They have excellent compatibility with alcohol and will definitely make your drink go down smoothly!
