Kanazawa is a transportation hub, and there are many cases where you can only sightsee for half a day
Kanazawa, where land and water routes have been developed since ancient times, is also known as a key transportation city due to its good access to various places. As the Hokuriku Shinkansen has gradually extended its routes, access to the Kansai region became even more convenient in 2024.
Therefore, it is characterized by many people stopping by as a transit point on their journey. Many travelers cannot secure much sightseeing time in Kanazawa, and depending on the itinerary, there are cases where you can only stay for about half a day.
If you can't even stay one night in Kanazawa, let's efficiently tour the must-see tourist spots picked by locals!

When you can't secure a long stay, you want to make the most of your limited time and enjoy sightseeing, right?
Plan your itinerary thoroughly in advance and tour the city of Kanazawa efficiently.
When I plan a short itinerary, I think about the plans before and after based on tourist spots that I "absolutely want to visit!" Shops popular with locals are recommended as they rarely disappoint.
In the next topic, I will propose an itinerary that allows you to move efficiently according to your arrival time. Please use it as a reference.
Half day Itinerary: For those arriving in Kanazawa in the early afternoon
First, I will introduce a recommended plan for "people arriving in Kanazawa in the early afternoon." If you have to leave Kanazawa the next morning and can only sightsee in the afternoon to evening, please check this out.
12:30PM: Fill your stomach with Kanazawa's exquisite food recommended by locals

First, let's enjoy local exquisite food for lunch.
Kanazawa has many local dishes that take advantage of the climate, such as abundant seafood and vegetables blessed by nature. There are also many miso and soy sauce breweries, and the use of traditional seasonings is part of the food culture unique to this region.
Here, I will introduce the following three local dishes:
-Seafood & Sushi
-Jibu-ni
-Kaga Ryori
Seafood & Sushi (Omicho Market)

When it comes to Kanazawa gourmet food, the first thing that comes to my mind is fresh seafood and sushi. At markets near fishing ports, all kinds of seafood are available throughout the year. Since fresh products are available no matter what time you visit, it is part of Kanazawa's unique food culture that it is eaten daily in ordinary households.
Omicho Market, called "the kitchen of Kanazawa citizens," is a spot I always stop by. You can enjoy nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) and snow crab, which are known as high-class fish, as well as sweet shrimp with rich sweetness. Side dishes that can be eaten immediately, such as fried oysters and tempura, are also popular.
There are more than 40 restaurants including sushi restaurants, so why not visit during lunch time?

Jibu-ni (Kagaya Kanazawa)
Source:Official website
"Jibu-ni" is also essential when it comes to Ishikawa Prefecture's local cuisine. It is a traditional dish made by simmering duck meat, taro, spinach, shiitake mushrooms, etc., and is also familiar as a home-cooked dish. It is coated with wheat flour to preserve the umami of the meat, and the broth is characteristically thick.
At the long-established restaurant "Kagaya," where you can enjoy traditional Japanese food, you can savor Jibu-ni with an elegant taste. Since it is directly connected to the station, I sometimes visit it first when I arrive in Kanazawa.
In addition to Jibu-ni, I also recommend seafood from the Sea of Japan, tempura, and Noto beef steak. The colorful dishes served in traditional vessels are also visually enjoyable.
Please enjoy Jibu-ni, which warms you from the inside.

Kaga Ryori (Tsubajin)
Source:Official website
Local cuisine passed down in Kanazawa is called "Kaga Ryori." It is characterized by using plenty of local ingredients and luxuriously arranging them in traditional craft vessels. "Jibu-ni" introduced above is also one of the Kaga Ryori dishes.
Another attractive point is that you can enjoy a good balance of seasonal seafood, meat, vegetables, wild vegetables, etc. They are cooked to bring out the natural deliciousness of the ingredients.
What I recommend is "Tsubajin," the oldest restaurant in Kanazawa. It is also known as a shop associated with the warlord Toshiie Maeda, who laid the foundation for the Kaga region, and you can enjoy meals in a traditional style served one dish at a time.
Please enjoy the taste of this long-established restaurant that has been loved locally for many years!

1:30PM-6:00PM: Tour the three spots that almost everyone who comes to Kanazawa visits
After enjoying a Kanazawa gourmet lunch, let's head to popular tourist attractions that many travelers visit. These are iconic places that represent "This is Kanazawa!", so make sure to take plenty of photos!
Kenroku-en

Located in the center of Kanazawa, Kenroku-en is a strolling-style garden that is one of Japan's three most famous gardens. Cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage beautifully decorate the garden, allowing visitors to experience the beautiful changing of Japan's seasons.
When I visited in early summer, the vibrant purple irises were in full bloom, and I was able to enjoy their collaboration with the lively green plants and trees. As you stroll leisurely through the garden and listen carefully, you can sometimes hear various wild birds singing.
Inside the garden, there are tea houses where you can enjoy matcha and seasonal Japanese sweets, and I recommend spending a relaxing afternoon while viewing the garden.

Kanazawa Castle

When it comes to popular tourist spots in Kanazawa, you can't forget Kanazawa Castle. Although it was destroyed many times by disasters, it was restored in 2001 based on old documents, resulting in its current appearance featuring characteristic white roofs and exterior walls.
My recommended highlight is the stone walls around and inside the castle grounds. There are various colors, shapes, and assembly methods with different techniques applied depending on the era, allowing you to feel the depth of history. It's even called the "Museum of Stone Walls."
An attractive point is that it's adjacent to Kenroku-en, making it easy to tour both in a short time during your half day exploration.

Higashi Chaya District

My favorite spot in Kanazawa is the Higashi Chaya District. In this tea house district created in the late Edo period (1820), many traditional buildings called Machi-ya, which integrate shops and residences, remain. Walking along the beautiful cobblestone streets, you can experience the sensation of being transported back to the Edo period.
Please spend your time as you wish, whether enjoying shopping at general stores or taking a break at Machi-ya-style cafes. I recommend the traditional craft Kaga Yuzen dyeing experience.
Please enjoy the unique gorgeous atmosphere of this area!

6:00PM: Enjoy exquisite food and drinks in Kanazawa's downtown area
Katamachi

Katamachi is the largest downtown area in the Hokuriku region. Katamachi shopping street, the oldest in Kanazawa, is bustling as a shopping street during the day and a gourmet spot at night.
The attractive point is that a wide range of genres are available, from local back-alley shops frequented by locals and izakayas where you can eat Kanazawa specialties, to wine bars and high-end Michelin-starred restaurants. Whenever I'm unsure what to eat, I always head to Katamachi.
If you want to fully enjoy your precious Kanazawa night during your half day stay, be sure to visit Katamachi!
Kiguramachi
Source:Official website
Kiguramachi is also recommended if you want to enjoy Kanazawa's nighttime downtown area. Kiguramachi, which used to have many general stores and antique shops, has a history of flourishing as an artisan district. During New Year's, shops stayed open even at night so that castle maids returning to their family homes could buy souvenirs after work.
Currently, famous restaurants representing Kanazawa line the streets, and you can enjoy not only Japanese food but also cuisine from various countries such as Italy, France, Korea, and China.
Kiguramachi, which is frequently visited by locals, is recommended for those who want to enjoy a more local atmosphere.
Around Kanazawa Station

Around Kanazawa Station, which is also popular for being photogenic with its vermillion gate and glass dome, you can find a wide variety of easily accessible cuisine. There are many izakayas where you can casually enjoy fresh seafood and drinks, making it suitable for families and groups of friends.
You can also enjoy famous B-grade gourmet dishes such as Kanazawa curry and Hanton Rice (rice seasoned with ketchup topped with thin omelet and fried white fish)!
Since it's easy to access areas like Katamachi, how about having a light meal and then moving on to enjoy some drinks?

Since this is a valuable dinner for just one day, you want to enjoy a satisfying meal, right? For such people, this tour that guides you to restaurants carefully selected by local guides is recommended.
My recommended points:
Savor traditional and authentic Japanese cuisine
Stroll through the city at night while listening to the guide's explanations
Enjoy various types of sake in a tasting style
At the sake bar you visit last, it's also an attractive point that the master tells unique stories about traditional ways of drinking sake and Kanazawa's sake culture.
If you want to fully enjoy Kanazawa gourmet food and drinks in a short time, please check it out!

Meeting point: In front of the Korinbo Ramoda bldg.
Tour area: Restaurants in the Kanazawa area
Start time: 18:00
Next day: Enjoy Kanazawa food one last time at shops that are open from the morning

Let's conclude your trip with a delicious Kanazawa breakfast on the morning of departure. Kanazawa, which serves as a transportation hub to various destinations, has many restaurants that are open from early morning for travelers.
Inside Kanazawa Station, there are also shops where you can have breakfast timed with the first Shinkansen departure.
For me, breakfast is also one of the pleasures of traveling. When you have subsequent travel such as boarding the Shinkansen, it's reassuring to have something that is served quickly and can be eaten easily. Since it will be your last meal in that place, it's also recommended to taste local specialties you missed or enjoy delicious local foods once more.
I'll introduce three of my favorite shops that I often use, so please use them as a reference.
Author's Recommendation↓

Handmade Onigiri Shop Musubi Kanazawa Station Store (Opens 5:40 - 21:00 )

Around Kenroku-en & Kanazawa Castle:

Half day Itinerary: For those who arrive in the morning and leave Kanazawa in the evening
Next, I'll introduce an itinerary for those who arrive in the morning. With plans unique to the morning to afternoon time period, you can fully enjoy the charm of Kanazawa city! If you want to make effective use of your precious time until evening, please use this as a reference.
8:00AM: Enjoy exquisite Kanazawa food for breakfast and charge up your energy for sightseeing

First, let's charge up your energy for the day with a delicious breakfast!
What would you like to eat for your first meal in Kanazawa? If you've already decided on a lunch restaurant, how about deciding on breakfast by considering the balance of content and quantity? For those who want to depart early for sightseeing, easily eaten onigiri (rice balls) or sandwiches are also recommended.
I often use the soba restaurant "Kaga Hakusan Soba" inside Kanazawa Station. The traditional broth overflowing with umami is exquisite and permeates your body in the early morning when you're not yet fully awake.
It's also a pleasant point that they're open from 6:00 AM. If you want to eat light Kanazawa gourmet food first, please definitely visit.
9:00AM: Sightsee Kanazawa's must-see spots

It's recommended to visit must-see popular sightseeing spots during morning hours when you can avoid crowds.
"Kenroku-en," one of Japan's three famous gardens, is an indispensable spot for Kanazawa sightseeing. When you leisurely stroll through the nature-rich garden, you can feel the beauty of each season. Spring when cherry blossoms bloom in full glory and autumn when autumn leaves add color are especially crowded seasons, so it's recommended to visit right when it opens.
Kanazawa Castle, adjacent to Kenroku-en, is also known as a symbol of Kanazawa. There are many highlights such as the beautiful contrast of white and black exterior walls and roofs, gates with complex structures, and stone walls layered in multiple tiers. Please enjoy it together with Kenroku-en!

If you want to fully enjoy Kanazawa sightseeing in a short time, this tour that visits must-see spots in half a day is also recommended. If you tour the city while listening to explanations from a guide who knows the local area inside out, you can spend a more fulfilling time.
Tour highlights:
-Tasting experience at Omicho Market with over 300 years of history
-Stroll through Kenroku-en with guide explanations
-Lunch of local cuisine at a restaurant inside Kenroku-en
-Explore traditional methods of making Japanese sweets and their history at the Japanese Sweets Museum
-Tea time with matcha and Japanese sweets
Please definitely try participating in this tour packed with the charm of atmospheric Kanazawa!

12:00PM: Enjoy Excellent Seafood at Omicho Market, Known to Locals as 'Kanazawa's Kitchen'

Omicho Market, with approximately 180 shops, is an essential marketplace in the daily lives of citizens. In addition to sushi and seafood restaurants, you'll find a variety of stores selling vegetables, fruits, meat, sweets, flowers, and clothing.
This is a recommended spot for those who want to eat fresh seafood during their half day exploration of Kanazawa.
Kaisendon Yutaka Suisan
Source:Tabelog
"Kaisendon Yutaka Suisan" is a Kaisendon restaurant popular for its gorgeous presentation. A dish of sashimi placed on top of rice is called "Kaisendon."
My recommendation is the "Yutaka Saikyo Don," which you can enjoy both for its jewel-box-like appearance. It's packed with fresh, daily-changing sashimi carefully selected by the owner, who has experience as a chef at a traditional Japanese restaurant.
They also have Wagyu roast beef bowls and children's menu options, so it's recommended for families as well.

Kaisendon Hirai

For those who want to eat a hearty Kaisendon overflowing from the bowl, "Kaisendon Hirai" is recommended. The most popular "Omicho Kaisendon" lets you enjoy 14 different types of seafood.
What I recommend for tuna lovers is the "Honmaguro Zuke-don," which features soy-marinated tuna piled so high it overflows from the bowl.
If you're not fond of raw food, the bowls topped with shrimp and vegetable tempura are also delicious!

Mori Mori Sushi Omicho
Source:Ohmicho Ichiba
One thing I want you to experience at least once when visiting Japan is conveyor belt sushi. The casual style of picking your favorite sushi from those riding on a flowing belt conveyor has become popular. The system of counting the plates afterward and paying for what you ate is also an attractive point because the pricing is easy to understand.
"Mori Mori Sushi Omicho" is a popular restaurant where you can eat fresh sushi unique to the market. At the counter seats, you can watch the chef's magnificent hand skills up close as they make sushi.
My recommendation is the luxurious three-piece platter of jumbo sweet shrimp, fresh sea urchin, and bluefin tuna. Please enjoy the lively atmosphere unique to conveyor belt sushi!

1:00PM: Tour Kanazawa's Three Major Chaya Districts

After enjoying lunch, take a leisurely stroll through the Chaya districts. If you didn't visit Kenrokuen Garden or Kanazawa Castle in the morning, this is also a good time to visit them.
Higashi Chaya District

"Higashi Chaya District" is a Chaya district that was established around 1820, at the end of the Edo period. Buildings called "Machi-ya," which integrated stores and residences, remain, and it's popular for its elegant and gorgeous atmosphere.
Enjoy cafes that preserve the Machi-ya style and experience shops for traditional crafts!

Nishi Chaya District

If you want to enjoy a Chaya district with a calm atmosphere, how about visiting "Nishi Chaya District"? Since it's smaller in scale than Higashi Chaya District, it's also recommended for those who want to tour quickly during their half day in Kanazawa.
The retro charm and modern atmosphere are well-balanced, making it enjoyable for people of all generations.
My favorite is the Japanese-style sweets such as tofu ice cream. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon while eating dessert. There are also comfortable and relaxing bars, so if you have the chance, please visit during the evening hours as well.

"Kazue Machi Chaya District," which continues along Asano River, is a Chaya district that developed during the Meiji period (around 1869).
The restaurants and teahouses that retain the atmosphere of that time are also recommended as photogenic spots. During spring when the cherry blossoms along the river are in full bloom, a beautiful scenery that can only be seen here unfolds.
Kazue Machi Chaya District, which has a particularly serene atmosphere among the three Chaya districts, is one of my favorite spots. If you want to leisurely experience the atmosphere unique to Kanazawa, please visit.

3:00PM: Enjoy Traditional Tea Houses in Each Tea District
When visiting Kanazawa on a half day trip, I recommend enjoying traditional tea houses. Just as each tea district has its own distinct characteristics, each tea house has its own charming features. Here I will introduce four of my recommended shops.
Geisha House Shima (Higashi Chaya District)
Source:Official website
"Geisha House Shima" is a valuable tea house that has been designated as a National Important Cultural Property.
The building from 1820 remains untouched and preserved in its original state. The admission ticket, which includes a set of matcha and Japanese sweets, is recommended as it allows you to tour the geisha's space and kitchen.
To protect the cultural property, large luggage cannot be brought into the building. You cannot enter barefoot, so please be sure to wear socks. It is considered an academically very valuable building and is a must-see spot that you should visit at least once.

Kanazawa Asanogawa Enyukai Hall (Kanazawa Geisha and Teahouse District Museum)

"Kanazawa Asanogawa Enyukai Hall" is where you can experience ozashiki asobi (traditional parlor entertainment) with geisha. Ozashiki asobi is one of Kanazawa's traditional cultures, but there is generally a custom of "no first-timers allowed." Therefore, even Japanese people rarely have the opportunity to experience it.
The attractive point of this facility is that you can experience simple ozashiki asobi by appreciating songs and dances. Please enjoy traditional performing arts while spending time with the geisha.

Hana no Yado

"Hana no Yado" is a long-established restaurant in Nishi Chaya District. The foundation built around 1820 has been preserved as is, and the restaurant continues to operate today while undergoing repairs.
The attractive point is that anyone can casually enjoy it as a tea house during the day. When you order a set of tea and Japanese sweets (500 yen), you get a service to tour the second-floor tatami room. You can have unique experiences only available here, such as viewing displayed traditional crafts and overlooking the quiet tea district.

"Otome Sushi" is a sushi restaurant that's extremely popular with locals. Having earned 2 Michelin stars, it's also known for being difficult to get reservations.
The chef's commitment is to bring out the deliciousness of the ingredients themselves through careful preparation, mainly using seasonal seafood for the sushi. The rice, cooked in a clay pot using locally produced rice and formed with exquisite pressure, has a texture that melts in your mouth.
For your final meal in Kanazawa, please enjoy the exquisite sushi!

"Sushi Kibatani" is a famous restaurant that never loses popularity despite being in a fiercely competitive sushi district. They carefully select and purchase fish every morning, mainly from the Hokuriku region. The soy sauce, salt, and rice are all from Kanazawa, and the attention to detail you can feel in every dish is my number one reason for recommending it.
The sake that pairs with the sushi is, of course, also sourced locally. Please leisurely enjoy the supreme sushi that can only be tasted here, along with delicious sake.
