Traditional June-Only Events in Akihabara

Nagoshi-no-Oharae Ceremony

Nagoshi-no-Oharae is a traditional ritual performed in Shinto, a Japanese religion. It is conducted at many shrines throughout Japan around June. During Nagoshi-no-Oharae, people cleanse themselves of impurities and sins accumulated during the first half of the year through rituals and pray for health and safety for the remaining half of the year.

Kanda Shrine

Nagoshi-no-Oharae is also performed at Kanda Shrine, a famous shrine located in Kanda, right next to the Akihabara area.

The Oharae ceremonies performed in summer and winter originate from Japanese mythology and have been historically practiced in Japan since ancient times. Cleansing one's body and mind through such rituals has been considered very important for living a healthy and prosperous life.

At Kanda Shrine, you can participate in a ritual called "Chinowakuguri" as part of the Oharae ceremony. It is believed that passing through a large ring made of chigaya (a type of plant) in a specified manner cleanses your body and mind, allowing you to spend the remaining half of the year in good health.

Chinowakuguri is considered a ritual when visitors pass through the Chinowa ring set up at the shrine by themselves. Instructions on how to pass through are provided on site, so please give it a try. This is a unique Japanese cultural tradition you can experience during your visit to the Akihabara event in June 2026, offering tourists an authentic glimpse of traditional Japanese spirituality.

Akiba Shrine

Akiba Shrine is a small shrine located in Taito Ward near Akihabara, surrounded by high-rise buildings. At Akiba Shrine, the Nagoshi-no-Oharae ritual for purifying body and spirit is carefully preserved to pray for the health of local residents.

At Akiba Shrine, you can participate in the ancient Oharae ritual using Hitogata. You receive a human-shaped paper called Hitogata at the shrine and write your name and age or those of your family members on it. When you stroke the Hitogata with your name and blow breath on it, it's believed to become your substitute.

If you bring the Hitogata to the shrine before the ceremony, they will perform a purification ritual on your behalf.

Anyone who visits the shrine can freely participate, so if you're interested, please try writing your name on a Hitogata.

Notable events in June within 30 minutes from Akihabara

In June, large festivals at shrines with hundreds of years of tradition and events to enjoy beautiful hydrangeas are held throughout Tokyo. Here are notable events in areas that can be reached within 30 minutes from Akihabara.

The Akihabara Event June 2026 calendar is particularly exciting for tourists who want to experience traditional Japanese culture while exploring this famous electronics and anime district.

Torigoe Festival

About a 20-minute walk from Akihabara Station, in an area called Kuramae, stands the Torigoe Shrine with over 1000 years of history. Every June, this shrine hosts a major Akihabara Event June 2026 called the Torigoe Festival. During this celebration, elaborately decorated large Festival Cars known as "Mikoshi" parade through the streets.

The Torigoe Shrine's Mikoshi weighs over 4 tons and is said to be the largest among the many shrine mikoshi in Tokyo. One of its distinctive features is the numerous traditional lanterns attached to it.

The Mikoshi parade takes place at night. When I went to see it last year, the sight of the lanterns illuminating the night streets was both powerful and somehow mystical and beautiful, which left a strong impression on me.

This is a lively festival that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors. Since it's within walking distance from Akihabara Station, if your schedule permits, I highly recommend experiencing the nighttime Mikoshi parade.

Tennou Festival

At Shinagawa Shrine, located about 30 minutes by train from Akihabara, a major celebration called the Tennou Festival takes place in June. This is a special Akihabara Event June 2026 featuring traditional Mikoshi parades that have continued for centuries, along with Shinto music passed down through the shrine.

On Sunday, local residents carry the Festival Cars called "Mikoshi" and dedicate them to the shrine. The sight of people carrying these large Mikoshi up the shrine's 53 stone steps is truly impressive.

The Shinagawa Shrine's Mikoshi has drums attached, and the Mikoshi parade is performed to the rhythm of traditional music passed down through the shrine, called "Shinagawa-byoshi".

On Saturday, there's also an event where Mikoshi parades through the town streets. Be sure to check out the Tennou Festival, famous for its wild and heroic Mikoshi parades.

Bunkyo Hydrangea Festival

Bunkyo Hydrangea Festival

Hakusan Shrine is located in Bunkyo Ward, about 20 minutes by train from Akihabara Station. Approximately 3,000 hydrangea plants are planted on the shrine grounds and in the adjacent Hakusan Park. Every June, an Akihabara Event June 2026 called the "Bunkyo Hydrangea Festival" is held to enjoy the delicately blooming hydrangeas.

During the Bunkyo Hydrangea Festival, the "Fujizuka" within the Hakusan Shrine grounds is opened to the public for a limited time. Fujizuka is a small mountain created to resemble Mount Fuji, which is an object of worship in Japan. The Fujizuka at Hakusan Shrine is a popular spot surrounded by trees, greenery, and many colorful beautiful hydrangeas.

When I visited before, it was drizzling. The rainy shrine had a quiet and pure atmosphere, and the hydrangeas blooming in such conditions looked truly delicate.

During the festival period, food and game stalls are set up in the shrine precincts, and participatory events that children can enjoy are also held. If you come to Japan in June, please be sure to visit and see the beautiful hydrangeas.
