Tokyo is the epicenter of Japanese pop culture, with areas like Akihabara, Ikebukuro, and Nakano showcasing the best of what Japan's pop culture has to offer. When I first visited Akihabara, I was overwhelmed by the electric atmosphere and the powerful presence of otaku culture. I'm writing this article because I want to share this incredible experience with international visitors to Japan.

In recent years, as anime and manga have gained popularity worldwide, there's growing interest in guided tours that let visitors explore otaku culture with local experts.

Magical Trip, which won TripAdvisor's #1 tour ranking across all categories in 2024, offers the "Akihabara Anime & Gaming Adventure Tour" where visitors can experience Akihabara's otaku culture alongside local guides. This hugely popular tour has attracted over 3,500 international visitors through 2024.

Introduction

Tokyo in April welcomes the full arrival of spring, with beautiful cherry blossoms in bloom. The average temperature ranges from 12°C to 17°C. Cherry blossoms reach full bloom across Tokyo in early April, and by late April, temperatures rise to around 20°C, making it very warm.

Akihabara is known as Tokyo's hub for anime, manga, and gaming culture. The area is home to many shops selling electronic devices and anime/game merchandise, and in recent years, it has also become well-stocked with digital goods stores.

In this article, we'll introduce the events and notable shops in and around Akihabara during April. We've compiled highlights, basic information, venues, and access details for each.

Furthermore, in the latter part of the article, we'll provide detailed information about the Kanda Festival, one of Japan's three major festivals, which takes place in the Akihabara area in May.

If you're planning to visit Akihabara in April or May, please check out this article until the end.

Must-See Events Near Akihabara in April 2026

Asakusa Yabusame

The Asakusa Yabusame is a samurai ceremony held at Sumida Park in Taito Ward, just a 20-minute train ride from Akihabara to the nearby Asakusa station.

Originally a New Year's ritual at Asakusa Shrine centuries ago, this sacred ceremony featured samurai performing martial arts as offerings to the gods. Though the tradition was once discontinued, local authorities revived it in the 1950s for cultural preservation and tourism. It has since become a popular event in Asakusa that showcases shrine and samurai traditions.

The highlight is the magnificent display of samurai in full traditional ceremonial attire. Yabusame involves mounted archers hitting three targets in succession while riding on horseback. The archers wear authentic reproductions of samurai attire from approximately 800 years ago.

This is your chance to witness how real samurai rode horses and handled bows up close. In the morning of the same day, you can also watch "Kusajishi," a free demonstration of ground archery. For those interested in samurai culture, don't miss this event at Sumida Park on April 20th.

Sumida Park Cherry Blossom Festival

The Sumida Park Cherry Blossom Festival is a cherry blossom event held at Sumida Park in Taito Ward.

The "Sumida Park Cherry Blossom Festival" is held annually from around March 17th to April 7th, where you can fully enjoy the cherry blossoms in full bloom. Sumida Park is located along the Sumida River, one of Tokyo's famous rivers.

The Sumida River is known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, and in spring, cherry blossoms bloom abundantly along both banks of the river. Let's enjoy Tokyo's spring leisurely at the Sumida River, which has been a famous cherry blossom spot for hundreds of years. This is a special experience only available to those visiting this area in April 2026.

The highlight is the up-close view of Tokyo Skytree alongside the cherry blossoms from the Sumida River. The Skytree, Tokyo's landmark tower, can be viewed beautifully from Sumida Park.

I visit every year to take photos - it's highly recommended. Let's capture both the cherry blossoms and Skytree together in your photos.

During the festival period, it's also recommended to photograph the illuminated cherry blossoms at night together with the illuminated Skytree. Please enjoy this Tokyo scenery unique to April.

If Visiting Akihabara in Spring, Consider Adjusting Your Schedule to May

While we've introduced recommended events in Akihabara for April 2026, it's worth noting that April is actually a season with fewer events in Akihabara.

Conversely, May is considered the most exciting season in the Akihabara area throughout the year. This is because of the "Kanda Matsuri," counted among Japan's three major festivals.

I recommend that those planning to visit Akihabara in April consider shifting their plans to May. It's a festival where you can directly experience Tokyo's vibrant traditions and culture, and it's a must-see event for anyone visiting Tokyo during this season.

What is Kanda Matsuri?

Kanda Matsuri is a festival held at Kanda Shrine, near Akihabara. It's a grand festival counted among Japan's top 3 famous festivals, alongside Kyoto's Gion Festival.

Kanda Matsuri has continued for about 400 years, since the time when Tokyo was called Edo. It was first held by the famous shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. It has been famous as a grand festival since the Edo period, with people participating enthusiastically every year.

Even in recent years, it's a major Tokyo event that attracts around 300,000 visitors annually.

Kanda Matsuri holds its main festival called "Hon-matsuri" every odd-numbered year. In even-numbered years, a simplified festival called "Kage-matsuri" is held.

2026 will feature the Kage-matsuri.

The Shinko Festival: A Spectacular Event in Akihabara's Electric Town

On May 10th, one of the major events of the Kanda Festival, the Shinko Matsuri, will take place. As part of Akihabara's most anticipated events in spring, this festival draws thousands of tourists to the electric town district.

The Shinko Matsuri features elaborately decorated festival floats and a grand procession through the streets. These floats, called "mikoshi," are believed to carry Shinto deities.

The parade begins at Kanda Myojin Shrine and proceeds through Akihabara's Electric Town, marching along the main streets of Marunouchi and Otemachi, where modern office buildings line the route.

The procession includes three mikoshi and over 500 local participants. People walk around the mikoshi wearing costumes from the "Heian period," an era more than 1,000 years ago. The sight of people in historical traditional costumes walking through modern Akihabara creates a uniquely captivating scene.

When I observed the festival, the traditional festival chants were vigorous, creating an incredibly lively and energetic atmosphere. The excitement was contagious, and I felt a strong sense of unity with the crowd.

The day after the Shinko Matsuri, an event called "Mikoshi-miyairi" takes place at Kanda Myojin. Over 200 mikoshi representing different neighborhoods around Kanda Myojin are displayed.

This event is held to dedicate the deity-carrying mikoshi to the shrine, which serves as the home of the gods. Many people wearing "happi," traditional festival coats, carry each mikoshi to the shrine while shouting enthusiastic chants.

These dedications continue from 9:00 to 18:30. The intense atmosphere makes this the most exciting event of the Kanda Festival.

A highlight of the Mikoshi-miyairi is the "Original Women's Mikoshi," carried exclusively by women. While mikoshi carriers in Japanese festivals are traditionally men, Kanda Sudacho has been organizing all-women mikoshi teams since the 1970s to enliven the festival.

The sight of women carrying the ornate mikoshi while wearing traditional black happi coats and red headbands is truly spectacular.

Historically, women were prohibited from participating in mikoshi-carrying, which was considered a religious activity. However, this groundbreaking women's mikoshi has continued to attract more participants and spectators, becoming a festival highlight.
