Tokyo events Published: Nov 24, 2025

Akihabara is a district in central Tokyo, and is called the "holy land" of "otaku" culture by anime, manga, and game fans from around the world.

Akihabara originally developed as an electronics district where the latest home appliances and computer products gathered, and at the same time became famous as an area packed with the charm of pop culture, including character goods specialty stores, "maid cafes" where waitresses serve customers in anime-style costumes, and figure shops.

In December around Akihabara, illuminations light up the streets and events are held one after another.

Of particular note is "VketReal 2025 Winter," an experiential event of Extended Reality where virtual and real intersect.

This time, I will introduce the Akihabara Event December 2025 lineup that you can enjoy around Akihabara in December, focusing on this "VketReal 2025 Winter." Let's enjoy the unique fun of Akihabara in December, where entertainment and tradition intersect.

"VketReal 2025 Winter" held in Akihabara in December is an experiential event where virtual and real merge. It has been held since summer 2023, and a cumulative total of approximately 200,000 people have participated.

"Virtual Market (Vket)," the world's largest metaverse event that usually takes place online, appears at a real venue, where people who value living as avatars actually gather and interact.

There are various contents such as experiencing the latest Extended Reality technology and corporate booths where you can get limited goods, so even people who are not very familiar with it will surely enjoy it.

The great appeal of "VketReal 2025 Winter" is that you can experience the fusion of virtual and real.

"Virtual" here refers to the virtual space on the internet, where participants interact using avatars, which are their alter egos.

And you can experience the feeling that those characters and items "jump out" into the real world.

For example, you can participate while remaining in the form of an avatar, or you can experience the online world view in an actual space, and you can experience moments where digital and reality naturally overlap.

I also participated in the previous event, and in addition to avatars, there were many booths where you could experience the latest Extended Reality technology, and time passed in an instant.

Of course, you don't need to have your own avatar, and you can casually participate and dive into the virtual world view and enjoy it.

The "Parareal Creator Area" That Gets Excited Every Year is Also a Must-See

The "Parareal Creator" area is a popular area that shows great excitement every time in VketReal 2025 Winter.

"Parareal" is a word that combines "Parallel" and "Real," and refers to going back and forth between digital space and the real world.

At "VketReal 2025 Winter," creators who make 3D avatar goods or items using the latest technology, without distinction between individuals, companies, and communities, jump out from online and exhibit and sell their works in a real place.

Visitors can enjoy the designs and characters they saw in the metaverse in an actual space, and can also talk directly with creators.

Even without specialized knowledge, you can have an exciting experience just by touching colorful avatars and futuristic art.

What First-Time Visitors Should Know in Advance

If you are going to VketReal 2025 Winter for the first time, make sure to check the admission method carefully.

This event is divided into a free "free zone" and a paid "ticket zone," with corporate booths being free and the "Parareal Creator Area" being paid.

Paid area tickets have advance tickets and same-day tickets, and are scheduled to be purchased as electronic tickets on the web. Also, crowd control tickets are planned to be introduced in anticipation of congestion, so check the official website to see if the event you want to go to requires a paid ticket.

Also, as it is expected to be crowded on the day, we recommend going with minimal luggage and wearing comfortable shoes.

Tokyo Dome City, easily accessible about 10 minutes by train from Akihabara, is a large entertainment area with a baseball stadium, amusement park, shopping, food, and more.

In winter, "Tokyo Dome City Winter Illumination" is held, where the entire city is wrapped in light, and it attracts many people every year.

The 2025 illumination theme is "SNOW DOME", with many exhibits imagining snow domes and snow, and is colored by about 1 million LED lights.

There are many photo spots, and being able to take romantic photos that look good on SNS is also an attractive point. I visited last year too, and the giant tree about 15m high was impressive, and the snow dome diorama was beautiful, so I took many photos.

Since shopping malls, cafes, and restaurants are adjacent, it's also a nice point that you can rest indoors right away when it gets cold.

TOKYO MIDTOWN, which has good access about 10 minutes by train from Akihabara, is a central complex facility where sophisticated shops, restaurants, and art museums gather.

It's a space where an urban atmosphere and a lush garden harmonize, and in winter, illuminations gorgeously color the city.

The illumination theme changes every year, and this year's theme is "Your Christmas Story". The soap bubble and snow effects that were well received last year will appear again this time.

I visit every year, and the overwhelming scale of gold light spreading across the entire wide garden area moves me no matter how many times I see it.

Since you can also view the illuminations from restaurants facing the garden area, it's also recommended to enjoy them while dining.

The Marunouchi area, accessible in about 5 minutes by train from Akihabara, is characterized by sophisticated streetscapes with offices, shops, and restaurants located right next to Tokyo Station.

In this area, an illumination event is held every year where the entire street is enveloped in soft light in the heart of the urban center lined with buildings. The entire area is decorated, and it's famous as a representative illumination event in Tokyo.

Champagne gold lights illuminate the tree-lined streets, and just by walking, you can immerse yourself in a romantic winter scenery. I visit every year, and no matter how many times I visit, I'm captivated by its beauty.

Shops selling Christmas-like goods and food trucks sometimes line the street, and you can leisurely enjoy an evening stroll with a warm drink in hand.

Additionally, sophisticated cafes, restaurants, and brand shops line the surrounding area, so there are plenty of spots you'll want to visit before and after your illumination walk.

If you're in the Akihabara area in December, try experiencing a Japanese-style New Year!

If you're staying in the Akihabara area in December, it's recommended to experience Japan's unique New Year culture. Among the Akihabara events in December 2025, experiencing traditional Japanese New Year celebrations stands out as a memorable cultural activity.

Typical Japanese New Year traditions include "Hatsumode" and "Joya no Kane." Hatsumode is a traditional event where you visit temples and shrines after the new year begins to express gratitude and wishes to deities and Buddha. It's a custom to start the year by buying good luck charms and drawing "Omikuji" (fortune-telling papers) to predict the year's fortune.

And Joya no Kane is the bell rung at temples on New Year's Eve, which is struck 108 times to purify "human worldly desires" and welcome the new year with a pure heart.

You can experience this at temples and shrines around Akihabara, so feel the Japanese New Year with quiet prayers.

Sensoji

Sensoji

Sensoji is one of Tokyo's oldest temples, located in Asakusa, about 15 minutes by train from Akihabara.

It's known as a popular spot where you can enjoy a traditional atmosphere, with the large red gate "Kaminarimon" and "Nakamise Street" lined with souvenir shops and restaurants along the approach.

Many people visit on New Year's Eve, and you can feel the atmosphere of welcoming the new year firsthand. At Sensoji, it's also possible to ring the "Joya no Kane," and you can have the special experience of purifying the year's impurities with the sound of the bell and welcoming the new year.

Furthermore, after the countdown, you can do Hatsumode right away. During your visit, you can make wishes, draw "Omikuji" (fortune-telling papers) that have your fortune for the year written on them, and enjoy traditional Japanese ways of spending the New Year all at once.

Date: December 31, 2025 - January 1, 2026
Access: 5 minutes walk from Tobu Skytree Line Asakusa Station
Admission: Free

Tsukiji Honganji

Tsukiji Honganji

Tsukiji Honganji Temple is a temple with excellent access, about 9 minutes by train from Akihabara. Unlike traditional Japanese temples, it features a unique exterior influenced by ancient Indian and Middle Eastern architecture.

Events are held on New Year's Eve, and many worshippers visit to ring the "Joya no Kane," and the solemn sound of the bell echoes throughout the temple grounds.

I also visited last year, and with hot milk being distributed, I was able to spend time warm both in heart and body. There were also pipe organ concerts, so I was able to enjoy it as the last event of the year.

It's easily accessible from the Akihabara area and is a recommended spot where you can fully experience traditional Japanese New Year's.

Date: December 31, 2025 - January 1, 2026
Access: Directly connected to Exit 1 of Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line Tsukiji Station

Kanda Shrine

Kanda Shrine

"Kanda Shrine," which can be visited on foot from Akihabara, is one of Tokyo's particularly historic shrines.

Because it's close to Akihabara, a business and electronics district, it's also revered by IT companies and creators, and there are even good luck charms for praying for the safety of computer functions.

It's also famous as the model for the shrine that appears in the popular anime "Love Live!", and the attractive point is its unique atmosphere where pop culture and tradition coexist.

From New Year's Eve to the early hours of New Year's Day, many worshippers visit, and it's enveloped in a lively atmosphere welcoming the new year.

You can experience the Japanese way of spending the New Year by doing Hatsumode with wishes, receiving good luck charms, and drawing fortune slips. There are also food stalls where you can eat while walking.
