Momiji Manju

Momiji Manju is such a popular and classic Hiroshima wagashi (Japanese confection) that it is nearly impossible to complete a trip to Hiroshima without seeing it at least once. It consists of a castella-like batter wrapped around fillings such as koshian (smooth red bean paste).
This sweet and soft confection is easy for anyone to enjoy. It is shaped like a maple leaf, which is charming because Miyajima, one of Hiroshima's representative tourist destinations, is known as a famous spot for maple trees.
At locations such as Miyajima and Hiroshima Airport, you can observe the production line through glass windows. Watching Momiji Manju being made one after another in an orderly fashion is fascinating and very enjoyable, so please take a peek.
Momiji Manju Comes in Various Flavors and Even a Fried Version

In fact, Momiji Manju has a very wide variety. The most common type contains koshian (smooth bean paste where all the azuki beans are mashed). Other varieties include tsubuan (bean paste with some skin and grains remaining), chocolate, cheese, caramel, apple, sesame, and more, ranging from classic to unique fillings.
Furthermore, there are versions with croissant dough or puff pastry on the outside, ones with ice cream sandwiched between halved Momiji Manju, fried Momiji Manju, and many other unique variations created by different shops.
Even though I have traveled to Hiroshima many times, I encounter unknown Momiji Manju varieties with each visit, so I always try something new. By the way, my favorite is the fried Momiji Manju.
The Original Hassaku Daifuku (Kashihara)
Source:Official website
Hassaku is a type of orange that originates from an island called Innoshima in Hiroshima. The Original Hassaku Daifuku is made using Hassaku, a specialty product of Hiroshima.
This is a three-layered wagashi where Hassaku fruit is wrapped in shiro-an (white bean paste), which is then further wrapped in mochi dough kneaded with mikan (mandarin orange). The combination of the sour Hassaku fruit and the sweetness of the bean paste is outstanding, making you want to eat one after another.
The shelf life is very short at only 3 days, so it is recommended to buy it for yourself and enjoy it during your stay. One of my travel pleasures is eating The Original Hassaku Daifuku while drinking coffee at my hotel.
Cream Buns (Hattendo)
Source:PR TIMES
At Hattendo, you can enjoy a very special type of Cream Buns that are meant to be eaten chilled. The bread is packed to overflowing with rich, melt-in-your-mouth cream.
There are many cream varieties including custard and matcha. My favorite is the matcha flavor, where the bitterness of matcha matches perfectly with the sweetness of the cream. For children, the chocolate flavor is recommended.
I love Hattendo's Cream Buns so much that I have them for breakfast every time I visit Hiroshima. Even just one is satisfying enough for breakfast because it is so voluminous and packed with cream.
Butter Cake (Nagasakido)
Source:Tabelog
Nagasakido is a renowned shop famous for its Butter Cake, which features the rich aroma of butter and an elegant, subtle sweetness. The shop only sells Butter Cake, allowing you to taste the ultimate Butter Cake crafted with extreme dedication.
This soft cake, with its natural sweetness of ingredients and enticing butter aroma, is recommended for everyone regardless of age or gender. It is said that local people often purchase it as gifts. Please enjoy this taste that can only be experienced in Hiroshima, which has been loved locally for many years.
This extremely popular sweet sometimes sells out by early afternoon, so please go to purchase it early in the day. I always make sure to buy it first thing in the morning, before starting my sightseeing.

Baked Oatmeal Almond Cookies
Source:Hiroshima City
Baked Oatmeal Almond Cookies are the signature product of Backen Mozart, a famous confectionery shop in Hiroshima. These cookies are known for their crispy texture and fragrant aroma.
Another appealing aspect of Baked Oatmeal Almond Cookies is that they are healthy. They are made with generous amounts of almonds, often called natural supplements, and oats, which are rich in dietary fiber and minerals.
Baked Oatmeal Almond Cookies bring out 100% of the fragrant flavors of healthy almonds and oats. Because they are made from natural ingredients, they have a simple taste that never gets boring no matter how many you eat, and they are truly delicious.
Whole Oyster Senbei Crackers

For those who do not have much of a sweet tooth, Whole Oyster Senbei Crackers come highly recommended. Made with oysters, a specialty of Hiroshima, and potatoes, this product is packed with flavors unique to Hiroshima.
Each senbei cracker contains one whole oyster, making it an exceptionally luxurious treat.
Whole Oyster Senbei Crackers are particularly appealing because the oysters are crushed and baked into the crackers, resulting in an intensely rich oyster flavor. This snack pairs perfectly with alcohol, making it a strongly recommended souvenir for anyone who enjoys drinking.
Sakagura Street Amazake Tart
Source:Mike
Sakagura Street Amazake Tart is a confection made with Japanese sake. It also uses two types of amazake, a sweet, non-alcoholic beverage similar to sake.
Each type of amazake has distinct characteristics: one offers a refreshing sweetness, while the other has a rich aroma. Sakagura Street Amazake Tart combines the best of both. The tart crust is made from rice flour, giving it a wonderfully moist texture that pairs perfectly with sake and amazake, both of which are made from rice.
With 0% alcohol content, this treat allows children and those avoiding alcohol to enjoy the flavor of Japanese sake, which is one of its most appealing features.
Saijo Sake from Hiroshima: Also a Perfect Souvenir!

Saijo, a town located east of Hiroshima City, is famous for its sake and is counted as one of Japan's three major sake-producing regions. The Sakagura Street Amazake Tart is also made with sake from Saijo.
Saijo sake is extremely popular as a souvenir. There are seven sake breweries in Saijo, each producing sake with its own distinct flavor.
The most famous is Kamotsuru, which has a crisp taste and rich aroma. It is recommended for sake enthusiasts. For those who have not had much experience with Japanese sake, Hakubotan is recommended for its strong sweetness and easy drinkability.
Personally, at first I could only drink Hakubotan, but after drinking it many times, I gradually grew to love Japanese sake and became able to enjoy other brands as well.
Want to Enjoy Authentic Hiroshima Food? Let a Local Guide Show You the Spots Loved by Locals!

So far, we have mainly introduced light snacks. For those who want to fully enjoy the food culture of Hiroshima, we recommend filling up on dinner with the Hiroshima Bar Hopping Food Tour. You will visit three different restaurants while enjoying a wide variety of Hiroshima cuisine.
The first restaurant is my personal favorite. You get to enjoy okonomiyaki, a savory Japanese dish similar to a non-sweet pancake. The chef cooked it right in front of us, so I was delighted to not only "eat" Japanese cuisine but also "experience" it.

Fried Momiji Manju (Momijido Main Store)
Source:Tabelog
The most popular street food in Miyajima is Age-Momiji (fried momiji manju). Age-Momiji is the aforementioned Momiji Manju coated in batter and deep-fried. The crispy exterior and spongy interior texture make it an irresistible treat.
My top recommendation is the cheese flavor. When heated, the cheese inside becomes perfectly melty, bringing out the best of the cheese.
Actually, Age-Momiji kits are sold so you can make them at home yourself. If you try Age-Momiji and like it, I recommend recreating it at home.

Bite-sized Okonomiyaki (Matochan)
Source:Official website
Matochan is a hidden gem located in an alley near Itsukushima Shrine, a bit away from the shopping street that serves as Miyajima's main food walking area.
Originally known as a famous okonomiyaki restaurant, it has recently become known for selling a new specialty called "Age-oko." Age-oko is a bite-sized okonomiyaki with the concept of "okonomiyaki made specifically for eating while walking."
It looks like a miniature okonomiyaki, and you can enjoy the same flavor and umami of okonomiyaki. Not only that, but because it's fried very thin, you can also enjoy a crispy texture that you won't find in regular okonomiyaki. This is a unique food that can only be eaten here, so please stop by.

Koppe Pan (Bakery Katsutani-pan)
Source:Official website
When eating while walking in Miyajima, I always have Bakery Katsutani-pan's koppe pan (hot dog bun-style bread) as my main dish. The appeal of Bakery Katsutani-pan is that you can enjoy koppe pan filled with a wide variety of ingredients.
Bakery Katsutani-pan was originally a company that made Momiji Manju. For this reason, the koppe pan filled with anko (sweet red bean paste) is my top recommendation.
Also, Bakery Katsutani-pan offers everything from sweet breads filled with anko or chocolate to savory breads filled with croquettes or Napolitan spaghetti. The appealing point is that both those who want a hearty meal and those who want to enjoy sweets can be satisfied.

Melange de Shuhari Hiroshima
Source:Official website
MELANGE De SHUHARI is a Western-style confectionery shop particularly famous for its macarons. The macarons have a crispy surface with a moist interior, and they melt in your mouth beautifully.
The Hiroshima Carp macarons are especially recommended. Hiroshima Carp is the local professional baseball team, and macarons printed with the team logo or team mascot are special macarons that can only be eaten in Hiroshima.
The set menu that includes cake, galette, and macarons is also recommended. Spending an elegant tea time in the calm atmosphere of the shop is one of the pleasures of traveling, freed from the busy daily routine.
