Late-Night Sushi Restaurants in Tokyo! Introducing 24-Hour Establishments as Well

Published: Jul 15, 2024

Tokyo is known as Japan's largest metropolis, serving as the center for various fields including politics, economy, and culture. Tokyo boasts an incredibly high number of commercial facilities and restaurants, with a record-breaking 67,185 dining establishments, the highest in Japan. The abundance of restaurants is the reason why you can find almost any Japanese cuisine in Tokyo.

Sushi restaurants, representing Japanese cuisine, are also concentrated here, covering everything from high-end to casual establishments. Tokyo offers many places to enjoy, including sushi restaurants that operate late into the night. The late-night sushi waiting for you after enjoying sightseeing is part of Tokyo's charm.

In this article, as a sushi lover, I'll introduce several late-night sushi restaurants in Tokyo. Enjoy the ultimate sushi experience in Tokyo's nightlife.

Late-Night Sushi Restaurants

Sushiroku

"Sushiroku" is a quiet, hidden gem sushi restaurant. It's open until midnight on regular days, and until 4 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.

The recommended menu item is the "Omakase Short Course" for 6,380 yen, which allows you to enjoy authentic Edo-style sushi at an affordable price. The course includes not only sushi but also appetizers and daily special dishes, offering a wide range of Japanese cuisine. For sake lovers like me, there's an all-you-can-drink option with 8 types of sake for 3,300 yen.

You can order via smartphone, and robots handle the serving, so there's no need to interact with staff. Instead, you can focus on enjoying the taste of the food and conversation with friends or partners.

As a course meal, this sushi restaurant offers excellent value for money. However, be aware that if you're expecting attentive, personalized service, you might find it lacking.

Toromasa Yurakucho Hibiya Branch

Toromasa

"Toromasa" is a casual izakaya where you can enjoy seafood. I was surprised that the otoshi (small appetizer served at the beginning) was sashimi. Typically, otoshi consists of relatively inexpensive items like edamame, cabbage, or tofu, so sashimi is quite unusual.

Regular hours are until midnight, with extended hours until 4 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. They also offer lunch service. The recommended "Toromasa Kaisen Don" (seafood bowl) is impressive with its volume that overflows from the bowl.

The freshness is impeccable, and each piece is cut generously, providing a satisfying meal. There's little fishy smell, making it easy to eat.

The restaurant has a pleasantly bustling atmosphere. However, due to the lively environment, you might need to speak a bit louder during conversations.

One of the highlights of this restaurant is the availability of an English menu with photos.

Sushi Kusumi

"Sushi Kusumi" is located in Ginza and operates until 2 AM from Monday to Friday. It's relatively affordable for Ginza, and you can often get in without a reservation if it's not too crowded.

While many restaurants in Ginza can feel formal and tense, the chef here is very friendly, providing a relaxing atmosphere. I really like this ambiance.

As you enter the restaurant, the sight of the approximately 6-meter wooden counter in the bright space heightens your anticipation.

My recommendation here is the "Kusumi Omakase Course" (16,500 yen). By enjoying not just sushi but also sashimi and tempura made with seasonal ingredients, you can better appreciate the deliciousness of the sushi.

This place is suitable for various occasions, whether dining with family, friends, or partners!

Ikina Sushidokoro Abe Gotanda Branch

Sushi Abe

"Ikina Sushidokoro Abe Gotanda Branch" is a hidden gem in Gotanda that's open until 3 AM. It's always bustling and loved by locals.

There are also branches in Roppongi and Hiroo, both known for their incredibly cost-effective lunches. Dinner is also great value, offering delicious authentic sushi at affordable prices.

Here, they use red shari (sushi rice). Red shari uses red vinegar, which contains umami, so no sugar is needed. This results in a deeper flavor.

My recommended menu item is the "Jou Bara Chirashi" (premium scattered sushi bowl). It's a luxurious dish where you can enjoy fatty tuna, egg, salmon, salmon roe, and sea urchin all at once.

<Restaurant Information>
- Address: Kato Building, 7-16-3 Nishi-Gotanda, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo
- Closed: None
- Phone: 03-3491-5665

Sushi Tsunaya

Sushi Tsunaya
source:Tabelog

"Sushi Tsunaya" is a sushi restaurant located just a 2-minute walk from Ebisu Station, open until 5 AM (7 AM on Fridays and Saturdays). There are very few sushi restaurants in Ebisu that operate this late.

The recommended menu item is the "5 Types of Tuna Nigiri". You must try the tuna here! This is because Sushi Tsunaya is directly managed by a tuna wholesaler, ensuring the freshest tuna.

With the "5 Types of Tuna Nigiri", you can taste Akami (lean tuna), chutoro (medium fatty tuna), otoro (fatty tuna), negitoro (minced tuna with green onions), and Aburi toro (seared fatty tuna). I recommend this because I prefer to compare different items rather than eating the same thing repeatedly.

The availability of an English menu is another reassuring point.

- Address: 1F Toa Ebisu Building, 1-8-3 Ebisu Minami, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo
- Closed: Irregular
- Phone: 050-5592-2164

Roppongi Sushi Chikanari

Chikanari
source:Tabelog

"Roppongi Sushi Chikanari" is a hidden gem located in a multi-tenant building in Roppongi. Unusually for a sushi restaurant, it offers a luxurious space with only 14 seats: a 6-seat marble counter and an 8-seat VIP room.

This restaurant only offers course meals. My recommendation is the "Omakase 22,000 yen Course". Using the highest quality seasonal ingredients, you can enjoy Japan's finest Japanese cuisine.

At first, I was worried that the seafood might not be as fresh late at night, considering that fish are usually purchased at the market early in the morning. However, I was surprised by the excellent freshness of all the ingredients.

Despite being a high-end sushi restaurant, the chef is very approachable. The atmosphere is very comfortable, making it perfect for celebrations or special occasions.

<Restaurant Information>
- Address: 4F Roppongi Minion Building, 5-5-1 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo

Hachibee Aoyama Main Store

Hachibe
source:Tabelog

"Hachibee Aoyama Main Store" is a sushi restaurant in Aoyama/Omotesando that caters to foreign tourists and is open until 3 AM.

In this area, many restaurants tend to close by 11 PM. While it's crowded with shoppers during the day, the number of people drastically decreases at night, offering a different atmosphere from daytime.

The recommendation here is the "Sake" (Japanese rice wine). The overall service is simple, allowing you to focus on enjoying the sushi. There are also English-speaking staff, so you can ask about pairing suggestions with sushi.

There's a reason why sushi and sake pair well. Both the shari (sushi rice) and sake are made from rice, and sake has the effect of neutralizing the fishy smell of fish. It makes the sushi even more delicious, so feel free to order sake.

The number of foreign customers, which had decreased due to COVID-19, is increasing again, creating an easy-to-enter atmosphere.

<Restaurant Information>
- Address: 1F Aoyama Green Hills, 3-15-13 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo

Sushi Daidokoya Sangenjaya Branch

Sushi Daidokoroya
source:Tabelog

"Sushi Daidokoya Sangenjaya Branch" is the second branch of Shibuya's first conveyor belt sushi restaurant. It's open from lunch until 11 PM. This is the recommended place for casual sushi in Sangenjaya.

The atmosphere is welcoming even for solo diners. However, be aware that the seating is quite close together, and the restaurant has a classic atmosphere.

Ordering from the "Today's Recommendations" written on the blackboard ensures you'll get fresh and delicious sushi. The toppings are generously sized, and the quality is particularly high for a conveyor belt sushi restaurant.

My recommendation is "Miso Soup". Although it's simple with just seaweed, the fish broth is well-balanced, warming you from the core.

Note that payment is cash only.

Sushizanmai Tsukiji Main Store (24-hour operation)

Sushi-zanmai

"Sushizanmai Tsukiji Main Store" is part of a chain that has expanded nationwide, centered in Tsukiji, offering fresh sushi at reasonable prices.

The most delicious and famous menu item at Sushizanmai is "Tuna". There's a wide variety of tuna dishes. Among these, I recommend the "Negitoro Roll". It's not dry, and the filling is generous. Just imagining it makes me hungry.

The in-store menu is available in multiple languages, including English and Chinese. With friendly service, it's an easy environment for tourists to use.

Sushizanmai has several other branches in Tsukiji alone, and as of January 2024, they have 49 stores.

You can enjoy high-quality sushi at any Sushizanmai, so you can feel confident even if it's your first time.

<Restaurant Information>
