In four stops, we trace Osaka's food history from the Edo period to today: pressed sushi and sake, kushikatsu, gyoza and motsuyaki, and a modern bar to close the night. Each stop is a different era; we order what we'd order on our own night out. No tourist menus — just the real thing. (Specific venues and dishes may vary by date.)
Osaka has been Japan's "Kitchen of the Nation" since the Edo period, and Tenma is where that soul still lives. The streets are loud, full of nanpa — people calling out to strangers just for the thrill of it. Tokyo's too cool for that. Kyoto would never. Tenma just doesn't care.

Meet your guide in Tenma, the down-to-earth neighborhood that's remained Osaka's real "Kitchen of the Nation" since the Edo period. Ask any Osakan where they really go to eat and drink, and chances are they'll point you here — real Osaka energy, no pretense. Settle in for senbero-style sushi with local sake and cold beer, and discover why this neighborhood is where Osaka's food story lives on.
Stop 2: Kushikatsu, the Osaka Way
Kushikatsu started as Western-style fried food before Osaka made it entirely its own, and that's exactly what you'll dig into next. Your guide walks you through the golden local rule — no double-dipping the sauce — while you grab a counter seat among the regulars and work through skewer after skewer, fresh from the fryer, alongside an ice-cold beer.
Gyoza, Motsuyaki & a Sweet Osaka Send-Off
Settle into a Showa-retro tavern for Osaka-style gyoza and motsuyaki, plus a crash course from your guide on Tenma's unpretentious bar culture (nanpa included). - Meet your local guide and start your night exploring the backstreets of Tenma
- Stop 1 – Edo-era Osaka: senbero-style sushi paired with local sake
- Stop 2 – Prewar Osaka: crispy kushikatsu with beer (loving it here? You can stay longer and simply order more instead of moving on to a third stop)
- Stop 3 – Postwar Osaka: motsuyaki (grilled skewers) and gyoza with drinks
- Stop 4 – Modern Osaka: finish the night with a sweet Japanese dessert
