Sanno Matsuri / Jinko Sai
Source:Official website
The Sanno Matsuri Festival, a traditional ceremony at Hie Shrine, is one of Japan's most prominent festivals.
The current Imperial Palace location was formerly home to Edo Castle, residence of the Tokugawa shoguns who ruled Japan for an extended period. Hie Shrine, once the guardian shrine of the Tokugawa shoguns, is now revered as the protector of the Imperial Palace and is one of Japan's most prestigious shrines, with worshippers nationwide.
The shrine's major festival, particularly the Jinko Sai Festival held in even-numbered years, is especially famous. A grand procession of participants dressed in traditional samurai costumes departs from Hie Shrine and parades through central Tokyo, passing the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station. The modern metropolis transforms, creating an otherworldly experience like stepping back in time.
In odd-numbered years, including Tokyo Events June 2026, the festival is called "Inkasai" and offers different attractions. The Child Procession, featuring young children in traditional Japanese attire, is a must-see. This ceremony, praying for children's healthy growth, charms visitors with the adorable sight of little ones in traditional clothing.
Those interested in experiencing one of Japan's largest festivals should not miss this event.

The "Tsukiji Lion Festival" is a traditional event held annually at Namiyoke Shrine, and will be one of the most anticipated Tokyo Events June 2026.
In Japan, lion-shaped headpieces, symbolizing strength, have long played an important role in traditional ceremonies praying for protection from evil and family safety. Namiyoke Shrine houses a massive lion statue, which is the origin of the festival's name.
True to Namiyoke Shrine's iconic lion statue, during the festival, participants carry either the lion or the Mikoshi (portable shrine) adorned with stunning golden decorations through the streets. During the main festival held every three years, both the Mikoshi and lion are carried, while in other years (shadow festivals), either the Mikoshi or the lion is carried.
It's an impressive sight to see adults dressed in traditional happi coats carrying the lion and Mikoshi while chanting loudly. If you want to experience a quintessentially Japanese festival atmosphere that's both majestic and lively, please join this remarkable Tokyo Event June 2026.

Nagoshi-no-Harae (Summer Purification Ritual) at Asakusa Shrine
Source:Official website
At Asakusa Shrine in Asakusa, visitors can take part in a traditional ceremony known as Nagoshi-no-Harae (Summer Purification Ritual), one of the most spiritually meaningful Tokyo Events in June 2026.
Nagoshi-no-Harae is a traditional Shinto event held at shrines across Japan around June each year. It is a ceremony in which people pray to cleanse the impurities of body and mind accumulated over the first half of the year, and to wish for good health and happiness in the remaining half.
At Asakusa Shrine, a large ring made of cogon grass called a Chinowa is set up during June. It is believed that walking through the ring purifies the impurities of body and mind.
There is also a paper figure called Hitogata, which is thought to absorb one's impurities when used. By placing the Hitogata in a box left at the shrine, a sacred ritual held on the 30th will purify and cleanse those impurities on your behalf.
Those who are interested can also participate in the ceremony held on June 30th by making a reservation in advance. Be sure to visit Asakusa Shrine and experience this traditional Japanese event.

Anyone who visits the shrine is welcome to walk through the Chinowa and cleanse their body and mind at their own pace. A large-scale Nagoshi-no-Harae ceremony is also held on June 30th.

Special Tokyo Events to Enjoy in June 2026
Tokyo Pride
Source:Official website
Tokyo Pride is an event that advocates for the rights of the LGBTQ community and spreads a message of respect for diversity. In 2026, it will be held over two days at Yoyogi Park in Tokyo and the surrounding area.
During the event, there will be booth exhibitions at Yoyogi Park, stage performances, and a vibrant street parade.
Tokyo Pride has grown into a major event that draws approximately 270,000 visitors in recent years. When I attended in the past, the plaza at Yoyogi Park was filled with booths from major corporations and universities that support the event's mission, as well as food and drink stalls and radio booths, and the entire venue was bustling with an incredible number of people.
The music stage, featuring popular Japanese artists and drag queens, was also a massive hit.
The highlight of the event is the Pride Parade through the streets of Harajuku and Shibuya, calling for the elimination of discrimination and respect for all genders and sexualities. In 2026, the parade will take place on June 7, so if you happen to be in the area that day, be sure to check it out.
This Tokyo Event in June 2026 is one you won't want to miss.

Summer Art Aquarium Exhibition
Source:Official website
In June 2026, you can also enjoy a special summer event at Art Aquarium Ginza, an entertainment facility located in Ginza, Tokyo.
Art Aquarium Ginza is a facility where visitors can experience Japanese-style installation art that combines light, water, and goldfish. Goldfish are creatures that have long been cherished in Japan as a traditional artistic motif.
Art Aquarium Ginza holds seasonal events throughout the year, and every June a special event with a distinctly summery theme takes place.
For example, in June 2025, a summer event was held featuring displays that gave visitors a refreshing sense of coolness just by looking at them. In collaboration with a famous Japanese architect, a stunning installation was created using fish tanks, light, and goldfish.
The display that stood out to me personally was one recreating a Shinto shrine torii gate using fish tanks and goldfish, bathed in red lighting — it had an eerily beautiful, almost bewitching quality. A similar summer event is expected to be held in June 2026 as well. If you love installation art, this is definitely worth a visit.

One of the appealing features of Hydrangea Road is that you can see not just one variety, but many different types of hydrangeas.
