The Appeal of Mt. Fuji

Mt. Fuji is registered as a World Heritage Site not only for the mountain itself but also including the surrounding roads and shrines. Mt. Fuji, which shows various faces each season and stands with overwhelming presence, is something irreplaceable and special for Japanese people.

When it comes to Mt. Fuji, one of its charms is the beautiful scenery that fuses with nature throughout the four seasons, including cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, and snow scenes. No matter what season you visit, you'll always encounter moving scenery.

Another attractive point is that there are several routes, allowing you to challenge mountain climbing according to your level. The view from the summit is said to be Japan's most spectacular scenery.

It's also a famous spot for abundant water resources including waterfalls, lakes, and Mt. Fuji's snowmelt water, and local cuisine using delicious water is also recommended.

The charm of Mt. Fuji is that it can be enjoyed from various angles.

The Author's Recommendation: Participate in a Private Tour Where Locals Create the Perfect Itinerary

If you want to efficiently tour the Mt. Fuji area full of highlights, why not participate in a tour guided by local guides?

What I recommend is a day trip tour with round-trip transportation from Tokyo by private car. There's no time loss from transfers on public transportation, and you don't need to worry about local transportation.

A guide who knows the area thoroughly will prepare a perfect travel plan including standard popular places featured in guidebooks and spots that are difficult for tourists to reach alone. You just need to get in the car from Tokyo and you can spend the best day!

This tour is recommended for people planning to stay in Tokyo.

One-day Itinerary for Avoiding Summer Heat While Enjoying Mt. Fuji

Now, let me introduce a travel plan to enjoy Mt. Fuji while avoiding the intense summer heat. You can fully enjoy activities, popular local specialty gourmet food, and beautiful scenery.

This itinerary is designed for travel from Tokyo by bus or rental car, so please use it as a reference!

6:45〜9:20AM: Departure from Tokyo〜Arrival at Mt. Fuji Area

When traveling from Tokyo to Mt. Fuji, depart as early as possible in the morning to avoid traffic jams. Before departure, it's recommended to have a light breakfast or prepare one. If traveling by rental car, you can eat in the car.

After departure, enjoy the drive while appreciating the scenery!

Points to Check in Advance:
- Rental car pickup location and route to the destination
- Express bus meeting time and location (pay special attention when there are multiple locations in Tokyo)
- Phone numbers of rental car companies or bus companies

10:00AM: Take a Bus to Mt. Fuji's 5th Station

Mt. Fuji can be accessed by car up to the 5th station. From July to September, most climbing routes have private car restrictions, so if you're using a rental car, you need to park at the parking lot at the base and transfer to a bus.

There are also direct express buses from Shinjuku to the 5th station of the Yoshida route, which are convenient and recommended. There are also methods to go by climbing bus from Kawaguchi Lake Station, Fuji-san Station, Gotemba Station, and other locations.

Things to Do at Mt. Fuji's 5th Station: Explore Restaurants and Souvenir Shops

Source:Fujiyoshida Official

The most popular among all climbing routes is the "Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station" of the Yoshida route. Restaurants and souvenir shops are well-developed, and many people visit here as their main destination - perfect for avoiding summer heat in air-conditioned comfort.

My recommendation is the "Mt. Fuji Melon Pan" that can only be bought here. The summit part of this Mt. Fuji-shaped bread is topped with cocoa powder and powdered sugar themed after lava and snow. You can enjoy the crispy exterior and fluffy interior texture.

If you're hungry, I also recommend the "Eruption Curry" with plenty of roux over Mt. Fuji-shaped rice. It's spicy and appetizingly delicious!

Things to Do at Mt. Fuji's 5th Station: Visit Fujisan Komitake Shrine

Source:Home of Fujisan Yamanashi

"Fujisan Komitake Shrine," established in 937, is a shrine located within the 5th station grounds. "Komitake" was the mountain that became the foundation of the current Mt. Fuji, which underwent repeated eruptions to become what it is today.

This shrine, marked by a red torii gate, enshrines the deity that is central to Fuji worship, and offers benefits for longevity, matchmaking, safe childbirth, and traffic safety. People also visit to pray for safety during their journey before climbing.

My recommended spot is the observation deck next to the shrine. It's a hidden scenic viewpoint where you can overlook Lake Yamanaka, so please visit it after your worship!

Things to Do at Mt. Fuji's 5th Station: Try Hiking to the 6th Station

Source:Fujiyoshida Official

Since you've come all this way, I recommend going to the 6th station to create the memory of "having climbed Mt. Fuji" - an ideal way to escape the summer heat at lower elevations.

From the 5th to 6th station via the Yoshida route takes about 50 minutes one way. The first 20 minutes or so continue on a gentle path, so please enjoy while viewing the scenery. The remaining 30 minutes proceed through mountain trails in the forest. Sneakers are fine instead of hiking boots, but avoid sandals.

Around the 6th station, the average temperature is around 15 degrees Celsius even in summer - perfect for avoiding summer heat! When I climbed in August, cold wind was blowing and I felt chilly. At the 6th station, there's a traditional mountain hut where you can get light meals. I also recommend taking a coffee break while enjoying the scenery!

1:00PM: Return to Fujiyoshida City and Enjoy Exquisite Fuji Cuisine

After enjoying the Mt. Fuji 5th station area and its cooler temperatures, let's return to Fujiyoshida city and savor the specialty gourmet food in climate-controlled comfort. There are many delicious Japanese foods such as sushi, udon, local cuisine, and soba. Here I have carefully selected the famous restaurants I recommend.

Sushi Toyo

Source:Tabelog

If you want to eat sushi around Mt. Fuji, I recommend "Sushi Toyo," which has been loved by locals for many years. Sushi Toyo, where you can casually enjoy authentic sushi, is also popular with foreign tourists for its English menu and friendly service.

Of course, nigiri sushi like tuna, sea urchin, and conger eel are recommended, as well as seasonal grilled fish. There are also children's menus, so the whole family can enjoy it. The cucumber pickles, simmered dishes, and clam soup that come with the sushi sets are also exquisite.

The spacious interior retains an old-fashioned charm, and you can experience the atmosphere typical of Japanese sushi restaurants!

Yoshida Udon

Source:Fuji Yoshida City Guide

"Yoshida Udon," a local specialty of Fujiyoshida City, is characterized by thick, hand-made noodles with strong elasticity and a satisfying chewiness. The broth-infused noodles allow you to taste the authentic flavor of wheat with every bite. The standard toppings include horse meat simmered in soy sauce and sugar, along with boiled cabbage.

Among the many famous shops in the city, I recommend "Ganso Miura Udon," established in 1981. Their carefully crafted broth made from dried sardines perfectly complements the strong, long udon noodles.

Another recommended shop, "Menkyo Kaiden," features slightly softer noodles compared to typical Yoshida Udon. The broth, which mixes soy sauce and miso, is truly addictive!

Sengenchaya Honten

Source:Official website

At "Sengenchaya Honten," you can enjoy "Hoto," a traditional dish from Yamanashi Prefecture. "Hoto" consists of flat udon-like noodles simmered together with vegetables and meat in a miso-based soup.

The main reason I recommend this restaurant is their carefully crafted miso soup. The combination of broth carefully extracted from dried sardines, shiitake mushrooms, seafood, and pork with miso is determined daily based on the weather and temperature. The soup has a deep, rich miso flavor while remaining light and refreshing, enhancing the taste of the noodles, meat, and vegetables.

The "Butaniku Hoto" made with Yamanashi brand pork allows you to enjoy the juicy flavor of the meat!

Nikonan

Source:Fuji Yoshida City Guide

"Nikon-an" is a renowned authentic hand-made soba restaurant popular with locals. Their carefully crafted soba, made fresh every morning using spring water from Mount Fuji, allows you to taste the natural sweetness of buckwheat flour and pairs perfectly with the kelp and bonito broth.

If you want to enjoy the direct taste of soba, I recommend the simple "Seiro Soba" with just noodles and broth. What I always crave in summer is the "Sudachi Soba" - cold broth with plenty of sliced sudachi citrus floating on top. You can enjoy the refreshing acidity of the citrus!

The side dishes, including fluffy rolled egg omelet and tempura made with local vegetables, are also exquisite.

2:30PM: Visit Oshino Hakkai - Beautiful Scenery and Clear Streams

After satisfying your appetite, let's experience the beautiful natural scenery at "Oshino Hakkai."

Oshino Hakkai consists of eight spring water pools formed by Mount Fuji's snowmelt water that has been filtered through lava over many years. The crystal-clear, unpolluted water has been designated as one of Japan's "Top 100 Famous Waters" and as a national natural monument.

My favorite is "Waku-Ike" near the water wheel hut. Among the eight springs, Waku-Ike has particularly abundant water flow, and the beautiful movement of the water surface creates a scene you could watch forever. The crystal-clear water blessed by Mount Fuji provides a refreshing feeling that makes you forget the hot summer.

There are also local gourmet food stalls and souvenir shops in the surrounding area, so please enjoy those as well!

3:30PM: Sightseeing Around Kawaguchiko Lake

During this still-hot time of day, let's go sightseeing around Kawaguchiko Lake, known as a summer retreat.

Located about 6-7 minutes by car from Fujiyoshida Station, Kawaguchiko Lake offers beautiful collaborations between the lake and Mount Fuji, as well as spectacular seasonal views. The attractive point is that you can enjoy waterside attractions and outdoor activities.

Here, I'll introduce my favorite ways to enjoy Kawaguchiko Lake that I recommend for both children and adults.

Recommended Activities Around Kawaguchiko Lake: Mount Fuji Panorama Ropeway

Source:Official website

To enjoy the spectacular views of Kawaguchiko Lake, the "Mount Fuji Panorama Ropeway" is unmissable. It connects Kawaguchiko Lakeside Station to the summit of Mount Tenjō in about 3 minutes. The view from the summit at 1,075 meters above sea level offers a 360-degree panorama overlooking Kawaguchiko Lake and Mount Fuji.

Mount Tenjō is known as the model for the Japanese folk tale "Kachikachi-yama," and "Tanuki Dango" (raccoon dog dumplings) named after the raccoon dog that appears in the story is a local specialty. Please try them!

Recommended Activities Around Kawaguchiko Lake: Lake Cruise

Source:Official website

For families with children, I recommend the sightseeing boat "Appare" that cruises around the lake. The vivid red hull is designed with the motif of "Kacchu," the uniform worn by samurai warriors.

During the approximately 20-minute boat journey, you can enjoy the dynamic view of Mt. Fuji seen up close and the refreshing breeze felt on the deck space.

My recommended highlight is the warrior goods that can be borrowed on board. Wearing various items and taking commemorative photos will really lift your spirits!

Recommended Activities Around Kawaguchiko Lake: Marine Sports

In summer at Kawaguchiko Lake, I also recommend enjoying water sports that are unique to this season.

Water sports available at Kawaguchiko Lake:
- Flyboard
- SUP
- Wakeboard
- Kayak
- Tubing

What I recently tried was "flyboard," which uses water pressure jetted from a water motorcycle to float above the water surface. Although it looks difficult, most people can float within about 15 minutes, so even beginners can enjoy it.

Experience the exhilarating feeling of viewing the spacious lake from the air!

5:30PM: Enjoying Beautiful Sunset Around Kawaguchiko Lake

After enjoying the scenery and activities, let's savor the beautiful sunset time. The summer sunset time around Kawaguchiko Lake is around 7:00 PM. The sunset glow is said to be most beautiful 30 minutes before sunset.
Here I've picked three scenic sunset spots that I'd like to recommend.

Ubuyagasaki

Source:Google Maps

Located on the north shore of Kawaguchi Lake Bridge, Ubuyagasaki is about 15 minutes by bus from Kawaguchiko Lake Station. You can view Mt. Fuji from the foot of the bridge and enjoy the collaboration of the two, making it popular as a photography spot. On clear days, Mt. Fuji reflects on the lake surface, sometimes creating a magnificent "inverted Fuji."

The sunset scenery when the lake surface is dyed orange is even more beautiful, and the view of Mt. Fuji seen across the lake is an absolutely stunning view that can only be seen here.

There are free parking spaces along the road, so viewing from inside your car is also recommended.

Address: Kawaguchi/Asakawa, Fujikawaguchiko-machi, Minamitsuru-gun
Access: 15 minutes by bus from Fujikyu Railway "Kawaguchi Lake Station"
Official website: https://www.yamanashi-kankou.jp/kankou/spot/p1_3446.html

Oishi Park

"Oishi Park," located about 10 minutes by car from Ubuyagasaki, is also one of my favorite sunset spots. Located on the north shore of Kawaguchiko Lake, vivid lavender blooms here from late June to mid-July.

At sunset time, Mt. Fuji dyed in the sunset sky becomes a silhouette, and its black, majestic figure creates a profound presence. My favorite is to arrive about an hour before sunset and leisurely watch the changing colors of the sky, Mt. Fuji, and the lake.

If you want to fully enjoy the sunset sky in this naturally rich, spacious park, please visit!

Koan Camping Ground

As a side note from the day trip tour, I'd like to introduce my favorite campground where sunset time is beautiful. If you have the opportunity, please try camping there.

"Koan Camping Ground" at Motosuko Lake's greatest attractive point is that you can enjoy camping while viewing the majestic Mt. Fuji right in front of you. Depending on your location, you can enjoy the luxurious scenery of viewing Mt. Fuji from inside your tent.

Sunset time is especially the main highlight. Prepare snacks and dinner early, and enjoy the sunset with a drink in hand. You'll definitely be moved by the scenery where you can feel the overwhelming dynamism of Mt. Fuji.

October to November, January to February: Recommended to See Diamond Fuji at Yamanakako Lake

"Diamond Fuji" is a phenomenon where the sun overlaps with the summit of Mt. Fuji, making it appear as if a diamond is shining. Since it occurs during sunrise and sunset, it can only be seen from places where Mt. Fuji can be viewed to the east or west.

At Yamanakako Lake, the easternmost of the Fuji Five Lakes, you can see beautiful Diamond Fuji at sunset from mid-October to late February when weather conditions align. Since October to December often have bad weather, I recommend visiting in February when conditions are relatively easier to meet.

The momentary scene where the sun overlaps with Mt. Fuji, a symbol of Japan, is the miraculous beauty created by nature. Combined with the rare value of something not easily seen, this mystical sight will become an unforgettable memory.

【Spots where you can see Diamond Fuji at Yamanakako Lake】
Nagaike Shinsui Park (Hirano, Yamanakako Village, Minamitsuru-gun)
Oike Lakeside (Yamanaka Oike, Yamanakako Village, Minamitsuru-gun)
Panorama-dai (Hirano, Yamanakako Village, Minamitsuru-gun)
Time when Diamond Fuji can be seen from October to February: 16:00~17:00

Any Time: Return to Tokyo

After fully enjoying sightseeing around Mt. Fuji, it's time to head back to Tokyo. Are there any souvenirs you forgot to buy?
Traffic jams are expected from evening to night, so if you're driving, you'll want to depart around 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Since it can take 3-4 hours, let's return while taking breaks.

If you're using a highway bus, it's recommended to make reservations in advance. Consider the travel time from drop-off locations like Tokyo Station or Busta Shinjuku to your hotel, and make reservations with plenty of time to spare. Buses departing between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM are recommended.

Points to check before returning:
- Car's remaining fuel
- Highway bus boarding location and time
- Securing light meals and drinks for the journey

"Since I've come all the way to Mt. Fuji, I want to enjoy sightseeing without worrying about the return trip!" For such people, we recommend a tour with round-trip Tokyo transportation by private car.

Recommended points of this tour:
- Guide determines departure time for the return journey according to your desired arrival time
- No need to drive back, so you can feel safe even if tired from sightseeing
- Takes you to your hotel, so no need to worry about the last train
- No need to carry lots of souvenirs you bought
- Relax and reflect on the enjoyable day during the return journey

For those who want to enjoy Mt. Fuji sightseeing until the very end, please choose this tour!

Meeting point: Hotel Pickup or Shinjuku
Tour area: Tokyo departure - Mt. Fuji surrounding area
Start time: 8:00am

5 Recommended Tourist Spots to Incorporate into Your One-day Itinerary for Avoiding Summer Heat Based on Your Preferences

There are still many more attractions around Mt. Fuji. Here, I've carefully selected 5 other tourist spots that I recommend.
Please incorporate them into your travel itinerary according to your preferences!

Yamanakako Lake

Yamanakako Lake, also called a "forest and lake resort," is located at an altitude of 1,000m, making it very cool in summer and popular as a summer retreat - perfect for your One-day Itinerary for Avoiding Summer Heat.

Being the closest to Mt. Fuji among the Fuji Five Lakes, you can enjoy spectacular views of Mt. Fuji looming nearby and the "upside-down Mt. Fuji" reflected in the lake. As mentioned earlier, you can see Diamond Fuji in winter, making it attractive throughout all seasons.

Activities you can enjoy at Yamanakako Lake:
- Swan cruise boats
- Amphibious bus rides
- Glamping in the forest
- Cycling with rental bikes

My recommendation is glamping, where you can enjoy nature in a luxurious space. If you're considering accommodation around Mt. Fuji, please give it a try!

Access to Yamanakako Lake:
Get off at "Fujisan Station" on the Fujikyu Railway line, then take a Fujikyu bus for about 25 minutes to "Yamanakako" bus stop.

[Yamanakako Tourism Association]
Address: 506-296 Hirano, Yamanakako Village, Minamitsuru District
Business hours: 9:00~17:30
Phone: 0555-62-3100

Fujisan World Heritage Center

The "Fujisan World Heritage Center" is a facility created to convey the charm of Mt. Fuji to various people and inherit its cultural value. With the four main concepts of "Preserve for eternity," "Convey enjoyably," "Exchange widely," and "Research deeply," it conveys the profound depth of Mt. Fuji that cannot be understood just by viewing or climbing it.

My recommendation is the screen corner showing time-lapse footage of the climbing trail. The pathway along the screen is sloped, and you can hear wind sounds and bird songs, providing a realistic climbing simulation experience.

The audio guidance in the facility supports English, Chinese, and Korean.

This facility is recommended for those who want to know the world of Mt. Fuji more deeply.

Address: 6663-1 Funatsu, Fujikawaguchiko Town, Minamitsuru District
Business hours: 9:00~17:00
Closed: Open year-round (South building only closed on 4th Tuesday)
Phone: 0555-72-0259

Fujisan Museum

Source:Official website

The "Fujisan Museum" is a facility where you can enjoyably learn about Mt. Fuji and its surrounding towns. You can enjoy Mt. Fuji using all five senses through projection mapping using a 1/2000 scale model of Mt. Fuji and VR theater projected on entire walls and floors.

Experience-type workshops related to Mt. Fuji are sometimes held, so please check when you visit.

I always stop by the souvenir shop inside the facility. There are many cute original goods with Mt. Fuji illustrations, making it popular with foreign tourists. There are many limited goods available only here, and they make great souvenirs.

This museum is recommended for both children and adults - please enjoy various aspects of Mt. Fuji!

Closed: Tuesdays (open daily in July and August)

Fugaku Wind Cave

"Fugaku Wind Cave" is a lava cave located in Aokigahara Forest. It's designated as a national natural monument and is also popular as a power spot - an excellent addition to your One-day Itinerary for Avoiding Summer Heat.

The average temperature inside the cave, also called a natural refrigerator, is 3°C, so bringing a jacket is recommended. It was actually used as a storage for tree seeds and other items in the past.

Inside, low ceilings of 8.7m height continue, building up an adventurous atmosphere. Due to the nature of the rocks composing the walls, sound is absorbed and doesn't echo, allowing you to experience a mysterious sensation.

Inside the cave, "icicles" form from frozen seeping water, which you can see even in summer!

This is a recommended cool spot perfect for hot summer, where you can feel the mystery of nature.

Address: 2068-1 Saikonishi Aokigahara, Fujikawaguchiko Town, Minamitsuru District
Business hours: 9:00~17:00
Closed: None
Phone: 0555-85-2300

Narusawa Ice Cave

What you'll want to visit together with Fugaku Wind Cave is "Narusawa Ice Cave" at the entrance of Aokigahara Forest. This cave, formed by lava when Mt. Nagao near Mt. Fuji erupted in 864, is considered globally valuable from a geological perspective. The icicles that can reach 3m depending on the season are one of the highlights - making it ideal for your One-day Itinerary for Avoiding Summer Heat.

The ceiling height ranges from 1m at the lowest point to 3.6m at the highest. There are places where you can't pass without crouching, so people with back problems should be careful. The passage width ranges from 1.5m to 11m and is extremely narrow, so the adventure feeling increases even more than at Fugaku Wind Cave.

This is a recommended spot where you can feel the history of Mt. Fuji.

Address: 8533 Narusawa Village, Minamitsuru District
Business hours: 9:00~17:00
Closed: None
Phone: 0555-85-2301
