Perfect One-Day Trip from Osaka to Arima Onsen: Complete Itinerary with Hot Springs, Transport Guide & Local Secrets (2025)
The Kansai area consists of six prefectures centered around Osaka and Kyoto. Kansai has been the area where Japan's capital was located for over 1000 years, and many historical buildings and cultural heritage still remain today.
Arima Onsen, located in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, is one of the areas where you can experience Japanese culture, and it has recently become a popular destination for foreign tourists. For this one day trip itinerary from Osaka to Arima Onsen, I have carefully selected the must-visit tourist spots to fully enjoy Arima Onsen in a single day. Using this guide, you can efficiently and deeply experience everything Arima Onsen has to offer in one day.

How to Get to Arima Onsen from Osaka?
There are two ways to get from Osaka to Arima Onsen: by train and by bus. Both take about one hour to access, and the cost is not significantly different at around 800-900 yen, so choose your preferred method.
[Train]
The train route is as follows:
JR Osaka Station → JR Kobe Line to "Sannomiya Station" → Kobe Municipal Subway to "Tanigami Station" → Kobe Electric Railway to "Arima-guchi Station" → Kobe Electric Railway to "Arima Onsen Station"
The advantage is that trains run on schedule, but be careful as there are three transfers, which may cause confusion.
[Bus]
For bus travel, services run from Umeda Station in Osaka as follows:
Hankyu Kanko Bus: Osaka (Umeda) Station → via Shin-Osaka Station → Arima Onsen
The advantage of using the bus is direct access without transfers. However, keep in mind that delays due to traffic congestion are possible.
The Appeal of Arima Onsen
Arima Onsen is counted as one of Japan's oldest hot spring towns. It's famous for offering two different types of hot spring water: Kinsen, which is brown water containing iron, and Ginsen, which is clear carbonated water. The hot spring town features stone-paved streets and traditional buildings, making you feel as if you've traveled back in time to old Japan.
When visiting Arima Onsen, it's common to also visit Mt. Rokko, where you can enjoy nature and views of Kobe. By touring Arima Onsen and Mt. Rokko together, you can spend a healing day relaxing in hot springs and then experiencing nature and scenery.
This area is perfect for those who want to experience Japanese culture or seek tourism away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

One-day Itinerary to Fully Enjoy a Relaxing Day in Arima Onsen
9:00 AM: Depart from Osaka
First, depart from Osaka in the morning. When heading to Arima Onsen, choose comfortable walking shoes. Since Arima Onsen is a hot spring town in the mountains with many stone pavements and slopes, I recommend wearing sneakers.
Also, on the day you go to Arima Onsen, you need to ensure alcohol has completely left your system. Hot springs improve blood circulation, making alcohol circulate more easily through your body and potentially causing health problems. Be careful if you drink alcohol late the night before.
10:00 AM: Warm Your Body at "Kin no Yu Hot Springs," a Public Bath Loved by Locals
Source:Official website
Once you arrive at Arima Onsen, soak in the hot springs at "Kin no Yu," Arima Onsen's classic hot spring.
Kin no Yu is a hot spring where you can enjoy kinsen (golden spring), where clear water oxidizes and turns brown when exposed to air. It's said to be effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, and sensitivity to cold.
The facility has two baths: the first features a space inspired by bamboo with a Japanese atmosphere, and the second offers a gorgeous space with autumn leaves motifs. Since many locals visit this hot spring, try experiencing hot spring culture as if you were a local.

After soaking in Kin no Yu, also try the free foot bath "Taiko no Ashiyu" located next door. Foot baths are a traditional Japanese bathing method where you soak from the knees down in hot water, and Taiko no Ashiyu can be enjoyed for free.
The foot bath contains the same components as Kin no Yu, and just soaking your feet for about 15 minutes will warm your entire body and relieve fatigue. I love that the foot bath brings you close to other people, allowing you to enjoy conversations with locals and other tourists.

10:45AM: Touring the Beautiful Natural Spots Around the Station
After relaxing in the foot bath, let's tour the beautiful natural spots around Arima Onsen Station. While Arima Onsen is a hot spring town lined with hot spring facilities, there are also many spots where you can connect with nature. Here I'll introduce three natural spots, so please take a leisurely stroll and explore them as part of your one day trip itinerary from Osaka to Arima Onsen.
Nene Hashi (Bridge)
The first natural spot around Arima Onsen Station I'd like to introduce is "Nene Hashi bridge." Nene Hashi is a red bridge that spans the Arima River flowing through the center of the hot spring town. It was named after "Nene," who was the wife of the warlord "Toyotomi Hideyoshi" who once unified Japan.
A bronze statue of Nene gazing at Hideyoshi stands on the bridge, and in the direction of Nene's gaze stands a statue of Hideyoshi. In spring there are cherry blossoms, in summer fresh greenery, and in autumn autumn leaves spread around the bridge, and my recommended highlight is being able to enjoy the bridge and natural scenery together.
This is recommended for those who want to take photogenic pictures.

Tansan Sengen Park
The next natural spot around Arima Onsen Station I'd like to introduce is Tansan Sengen Park. Tansan Sengen Park is a park where natural carbonated water springs forth.
In the park, the highlight is being able to see the carbonated water quietly bubbling up close. There's also a spot where you can drink carbonated water directly from a faucet. When I tried it myself, I could taste a unique flavor different from carbonated water sold in supermarkets.
Benches are also installed within the park, so you can rest leisurely while viewing the townscape. This is perfect for those who want to have a unique experience characteristic of a hot spring town and adds a special touch to your one day trip itinerary from Osaka to Arima Onsen.

Zuihoji Park
The next natural spot around Arima Onsen Station I'd like to introduce is Zuihoji Park.
Zuihoji Park is known as one of Hyogo Prefecture's premier autumn foliage spots. The site of Zuihoji, which lost its role as a temple in 1873, was developed as a park.
The autumn foliage season is particularly beautiful, and every year from mid to late November, colorful maples and maple trees bloom throughout the park. The autumn foliage at Zuihoji Park is so beautiful that it became the design motif for Kin no Yu's bath, creating a photogenic landscape.
Zuihoji Park has maintained walking paths, so it's a spot where you can walk leisurely while enjoying the natural scenery. When I walked through Zuihoji Park, I was able to refresh my mind, so I recommend it when seeking some healing during your one day trip itinerary from Osaka to Arima Onsen.

12:30PM: Enjoying Arima Onsen's Exquisite Cuisine
After walking through the natural spots and working up an appetite, let's enjoy Arima Onsen's exquisite cuisine. In Arima Onsen town, there are many restaurants that make use of local ingredients.
I'll introduce restaurants where you can taste Japanese cuisine made with various types of dedication, so please visit the spots that interest you as you continue your one day trip itinerary from Osaka to Arima Onsen.
Hacco restaurant enn
Source:Tabelog
Hacco restaurant enn is a restaurant where you can taste cuisine that combines Japanese and Italian food. Since it's located on a back street near the center of Arima Onsen, you can feel a calm atmosphere.
I like the seasoning at Hacco restaurant enn that makes use of the ingredients. In combining Japanese and Italian cuisine, rather than emphasizing one or the other, they maximize the characteristics of both while bringing out the inherent goodness of the ingredients.
Popular as a lunch menu is the "Yukemuri Gozen" which uses lots of local ingredients. The visual beauty and gentle seasoning are my favorite points.
Hacco restaurant enn is recommended for those who want to taste various types of cuisine at once or are interested in arranged Japanese dishes, making it a perfect stop on your one day trip itinerary from Osaka to Arima Onsen.

Kutsurogiya
Source:Tabelog
Kutsurogiya is a restaurant where you can eat kamameshi, which is seasoned rice cooked in small pots. You can eat traditional Japanese meals in an atmospheric space renovated from an old house.
The menu I recommend at Kutsurogiya is "Kutsurogi Kamameshi." The kamameshi contains sea bream, octopus, salmon, and wild vegetables caught in nearby seas, allowing you to enjoy various flavors at once. When I tried it myself, the rice was packed with the umami of each ingredient and was exquisite.
Kutsurogiya also has private rooms available, so it's also recommended for those who want to enjoy meals in a private space. If you want to taste Japanese cuisine in a Japan-like space, definitely visit here during your one day trip itinerary from Osaka to Arima Onsen.

The popular "Steamer Lunch" menu is a luxurious set of vegetables and pork steamed in a steamer, accompanied by Japanese side dishes and miso soup. The taste that makes you feel a gentleness that penetrates your body is my favorite point.
Odashi to Oyasai Midori also has a collection of Japanese sake gathered by the owner couple, and it's possible to taste Japanese sake from noon. When you want to taste vegetable-centered cuisine, Odashi to Oyasai Midori is recommended and makes an excellent addition to your one day trip itinerary from Osaka to Arima Onsen.

12:30PM: When you come to Arima Onsen, enjoying various foods through food walking is also recommended
When you come to Arima Onsen, in addition to sitting down for meals, enjoying various foods through food walking is also recommended. From savory foods that have been loved by locals for a long time to sweets, please try them while strolling around.
Takenaka Nikuten
Source:Retty
The first food walking gourmet shop I'll introduce is Takenaka Nikuten. This is a long-established butcher shop in Arima Onsen that has been operating for over 100 years, where you can eat croquettes and minced meat cutlets made by coating and frying vegetables and meat that have been mashed into a paste.
Takenaka Nikuten uses Kobe beef, which is a premium brand beef. The appealing point is that you can eat juicy meat packed with the umami of Kobe beef at an affordable price. I like to first eat Takenaka Nikuten's croquettes and then eat sweets afterwards.
If you're looking for exquisite gourmet food that will satisfy you even a little, please try it.
- Address: 813 Arima-cho, Kita-ku, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture

Mamekiyo
Source:Tabelog
In Arima Onsen town, food walking for sweets is also popular. Mamekiyo is a specialty shop for sweets made with soy milk.
There are several types of sweets, but the most popular product known is "Soy Milk Soft Cream." Small soy milk donuts sit on top of ice cream in a cup, making it photogenic. I love the contrast in texture where the ice cream has a smooth texture while the donuts are crispy.
Mamekiyo has chairs both inside and outside the shop, so you can eat on the spot as well as do food walking. If you're interested in healthy sweets, please try them.
- Address: Arima-cho, Kita-ku, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture (center of hot spring town)

Yunohanado Honpo
Source:Tabelog
The next food walking gourmet shop I'll introduce is Yunohanado Honpo. At Yunohanado Honpo, you can eat rice crackers that make use of Arima Onsen's carbonated water.
What's known as a specialty is "Ganso Nama Tansan Senbei" (Original Fresh Carbonated Rice Crackers). These are hot and soft-textured rice crackers that have just been removed from the grilling stand. The expiration date is only 5 seconds, after which they change into crispy rice crackers, so please eat them desperately without missing that 5-second moment.
If you want to eat unique sweets that can only be eaten in Arima Onsen, please stop by.

For those who love food walking, participating in a food hopping tour in Osaka is also recommended.

Since the tour includes all meals and guide fees, you can participate empty-handed and don't need to worry about budget during meals. If you want to deeply understand Osaka's food culture or taste many dishes in a short time, please participate in the tour.

1:30PM: Stroll around the tourist attractions of Arima Onsen town
Tosen Shrine
After enjoying lunch, let's stroll around the tourist attractions of Arima Onsen.
Tosen Shrine is a shrine where the gods who are said to have discovered Arima Onsen are enshrined. It was damaged in the earthquake that occurred in 1995, but was rebuilt in 2003.
Tosen Shrine is loved by local people as the guardian deity of Arima Onsen, and is particularly worshipped as a god of fertility and child-granting. Therefore, it's a place I recommend for those who want children or families with children.
Tosen Shrine is also popular as a viewing spot where you can overlook the hot spring town. When I visited, I was able to view the scenery of Arima Onsen in a quiet and calm atmosphere.
It's recommended for those who want to experience the sacred atmosphere of the shrine or those looking for hidden tourist spots.

Arima Masu Ike
Source:Arima Onsen
After visiting the shrine, let's have a fishing experience at Arima Masu Ike. Arima Masu Ike is a spot where anyone can easily enjoy rainbow trout fishing.
The reason I recommend Arima Masu Ike is that you can fry or salt-grill the trout you catch and eat them on the spot. The experience of being able to eat freshly caught fish immediately is quite rare. Also, from mid-May to mid-October, you can also enjoy catching rainbow trout with your hands.
If you're interested in experiential tourism rather than just sightseeing, or if you're traveling with family or love fish, please visit.

3:00PM: Touring Mt. Rokko's Tourist Attractions
After arriving at Mt. Rokko via the Rokko Arima Ropeway, let's tour the tourist attractions on the mountaintop.
Mt. Rokko features observatories, restaurants, museums, and more. While walking access between Mt. Rokko's tourist spots is difficult, buses connecting the tourist attractions operate, so there's no need to worry about access.
Mt. Rokko Tenran Observatory
The first spot to visit on Mt. Rokko is the Mt. Rokko Tenran Observatory. This observatory offers views from Kobe city to Osaka Bay and is a must-see spot that most people touring Mt. Rokko visit.
The great point about Mt. Rokko Tenran Observatory is that it's free to access. If you want to enjoy the scenery, feel free to visit casually first.
At night, Mt. Rokko Tenran Observatory becomes Mt. Rokko's representative night view spot. When I visited during the day, there weren't many tourists and I could enjoy it leisurely.

Rokko Shidare Observatory
Another observatory known on Mt. Rokko is the Rokko Shidare Observatory. This observatory was designed by world-renowned architect Hiroshi Sanbuichi.
The observatory is surrounded by frames that look like drooping tree branches, creating a stylish atmosphere. From the observatory, you can overlook the scenery of Kobe. Swings are also placed around the observatory, and my recommended point is being able to enjoy the scenery while swinging and feeling the wind.
At Rokko Shidare Observatory, various exhibition events utilizing the observatory are held throughout the year, so it's recommended for those interested not only in the observatory but also in exhibitions.

Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden
After enjoying the observatories, let's visit a nature spot. Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden is a botanical garden located near the summit that cultivates approximately 1,500 species of plants, including alpine plants and wildflowers from around the world.
The attractive point is being able to observe plants in a near-natural state, taking advantage of Mt. Rokko's high-altitude environment. Different scenery spreads throughout the seasons, with flowers in spring and autumn foliage in fall, making it an enjoyable spot whenever you visit.
Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden also has an attached shop selling plant-themed goods and a café, allowing you to spend time leisurely. It's recommended for those who want to relax while surrounded by plants.

Rokko Morinone Museum
Source:Official website
Another nature spot known here is Rokko Morinone Museum. This museum focuses on sound and consists of two parts: exhibitions of musical instruments and music boxes, and a garden themed on natural sounds.
My recommendation is the garden that spreads with approximately 300 species of plants and ponds. The garden has transparent domes and hammocks placed throughout, allowing you to enjoy natural scenery while relaxing. The time spent listening to bird songs and wind sounds while lying in a hammock was like heaven.
This spot is especially recommended for those interested in sound or who want to be healed by nature.

Rokko Garden Terrace is an area where multiple restaurants and shops gather, with several observation spots available. Among them, the view from the terrace called "Miharashi-no-tou" (Observation Tower) is my favorite. At night, the terrace is also illuminated, creating a romantic atmosphere.

7:30PM: Wash Away the Sweat from Mt. Rokko Exploration at "Gin-no-Yu Hot Spring"!
Source:Official website
After fully enjoying sightseeing on Mt. Rokko, let's return to Arima Onsen by ropeway again.
What's recommended for healing your tired body from sightseeing is "Gin-no-Yu Hot Spring."
Gin-no-Yu Hot Spring consists of spring qualities called carbonated springs and radium springs, and it's said that soaking in the water makes your skin texture smoother. When I actually entered, my skin became smooth with a silky texture as if it were wrapped in a veil.
At Gin-no-Yu Hot Spring, you can enjoy not only the hot spring but also mist sauna and jacuzzi. The hot spring is open until night, so please slowly pamper your tired body as time permits.

There are many foods and goods that can only be found at Arima Onsen's souvenir shops, so we recommend incorporating time for souvenir browsing into your itinerary. Also, since return trains are often crowded, it's important to allow plenty of time for your train journey.
With Local Guides, You Can Fully Enjoy Osaka and Kyoto's Food Culture
Finally, we'll introduce two tours where you can fully enjoy the food culture of Osaka and Kyoto, which are the centers of the Kansai region. With local guides showing you around, you can discover hidden famous restaurants and local gourmet foods that you wouldn't find when traveling individually.
Osaka Bar Hopping Night Tour in Namba
The first tour is the Osaka Bar Hopping Night Tour in Namba. This tour involves visiting three bars in Namba with a guide who knows the local area inside and out. At the bars, you can enjoy drinks unique to Japan such as local beer, sake, and shochu.
The guide is also knowledgeable about alcohol, so the attractive point is that you can choose drinks that suit you while listening to explanations. Additionally, the tour fee includes all drinks and meals, so it's a nice point that you can participate empty-handed.
For those who want to experience Osaka's nighttime food culture or enjoy interacting with locals, please consider using this tour.

On the tour, you can enjoy Kyoto cuisine with gentle seasoning that brings out the flavor of the ingredients, paired with sake, in a calm atmosphere. After enjoying the cuisine, you can also have dessert at a cafe.
The restaurants visited on the Kyoto Night Foodie Tour are all shops that the guide has carefully selected and confidently recommends. This is recommended for those who want to eat authentic Kyoto cuisine or enjoy gourmet food within limited time.
