Osaka in May 2026: Events, Festivals & Seasonal Highlights
In 2024, I made four research trips to Osaka where I personally experienced recommended spots for international visitors and local events. I created this guide to introduce the events that I found particularly captivating.Based on my experience, I've carefully selected only the events that I can wholeheartedly recommend.
Another reason for writing this article is the recent growing attention on Magical Trip tours, which offer a deeper experience of Osaka.
Popular tours like the "Osaka Bar Hopping Night Tour in Namba" and "Osaka Local Foodie Tour in Dotonbori and Shinsekai" are just as impressive as the "Tokyo Bar Hopping Night Tour in Shinjuku," which was ranked #1 among all tours on TripAdvisor in 2024.When visiting Osaka, I recommend trying Magical Trip tours to experience a more authentic side of the city.

Special Experiences Only in Osaka's May
Universal Easter Celebration

The Universal Easter Celebration is an Easter-themed event held at Universal Studios Japan. You can interact with park characters dressed in various Easter costumes and join in celebrating Easter by dancing together with many people. Once you step into the park, you'll definitely feel your excitement rising from the atmosphere!
I participated in the event with my friend and was captivated by the colorful and incredibly bright atmosphere, spending a happy time filled with endless smiles. Inside the park, we enjoyed Easter-themed limited edition foods, bought vibrant Easter merchandise, and enjoyed the Easter mood from opening until closing time!
Even if you've been to Universal Studios Japan before, please visit during this special period to experience the unique atmosphere where cuteness and fun are doubled.

Nakanoshima Festival

The Nakanoshima Festival, which began in 1973 to protect Nakanoshima Park's environment, is one of Japan's largest civic festivals. The festival raises a concept each year, and approximately 100 civic groups and individual volunteers who work on themes such as welfare, environment, and traditional culture come together to enliven the venue.
At the venue, you can enjoy various food stalls, flea markets, and stage performances featuring music, dance, theater, and gardening. What impressed me most when I participated in the festival was the handmade amusement park created specifically for the festival. The amusement park features human-powered merry-go-rounds and large mazes, all with surprisingly high quality for being handmade.
Being organized by civic groups and individual volunteers, its charm lies in the homey atmosphere that makes it easy to participate. It's recommended for those who want to experience Osaka's local atmosphere.

Koinobori Festa 1000

The Carp Streamer Festival 1000 is an event where 1,000 koinobori (flag-like decorations designed as carp) are displayed at Akutagawa Sakuratsutsumi Park, symbolizing wishes for children's healthy growth. Koinobori is a long-standing Japanese tradition where families typically display these carp streamers during Boys' Festival to pray for their children's growth and success.
The sight of 1,000 koinobori swimming across the vast sky is a spectacular view that you rarely see elsewhere - it's definitely worth visiting! When I first visited, I was overwhelmed by the impressive scenery.
Each koinobori has a unique design, so it's fun to walk around and find your favorite!
During the festival period, there will be stage performances by children, experience booths, and food stalls. Why not participate with your family to pray for your children's health?

Dotonbori Spring Festival

The Dotonbori Spring Festival is an event that provides a platform for young people to express themselves while energizing Osaka's Minami area, known for its entertainment district. The event revolves around three main features: an art flea market, performance stages, and live painting, allowing visitors to experience the Minami area's atmosphere at its most vibrant.
The highlight is the opportunity to enjoy works by artists gathered from across the country. All items are unique originals that you typically can't find elsewhere, making even window shopping exciting. You can also enjoy energetic live performances by musicians and dance teams, karaoke competitions, and attractive food booths set up by Dotonbori shopping street vendors.
Let's get inspired by the youth's energy and help create excitement in Osaka's Minami area!

Takatsuki Jazz Street

Takatsuki Jazz Street began in 1999 with the concept of "Making Takatsuki a fun city overflowing with music!" An attractive point is that all venues are free to enter, reflecting the organizers' desire to make the event accessible to everyone.
Live stages are set up at about 60 locations, including theaters, plazas, schools, and shrines, where bands ranging from newcomers to veterans deliver energetic live performances. The schedule will be posted on the homepage, so checking it in advance will help you enjoy the live performances efficiently.
Besides live performances, there are flea markets and food stalls worth checking out. I enjoyed the event by eating street food while hopping between venues and exploring Takatsuki city.
As this is a special period when Takatsuki city is filled with music, I highly recommend it to music lovers.

Special Traditional Osaka Events in May 2026
Nozaki-mairi Festival

The Nozaki-mairi Festival is a traditional festival held every May at Nozaki Kannon (Jigenji Temple). From May 1 to 8 each year, traditional Buddhist ceremonies are held at the temple.
During the festival period, more than 200 street stalls line the shopping street stretching from the station to the temple, drawing large crowds of visitors.
The Nozaki-mairi Festival has a long history dating back to around the end of the 17th century, and has been cherished by the people of Osaka for hundreds of years. Even today, as many as 300,000 people visit over the course of the week.
When I visited last year, the area was lively with people enjoying the food stalls and other vendors. There was an impressive variety of food on offer — from Osaka local favorites like takoyaki and okonomiyaki to seafood and desserts — making it a wonderfully fun festival to explore.
Nozaki Kannon (Jigenji Temple) is located at the top of a long staircase beyond the shopping street. From the temple, you can also enjoy a beautiful view overlooking the town below.
This traditional Osaka event in May 2026 is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience authentic local culture.
- Date: May 1–8 every year
- Access: Approximately 12 minutes walk from Nozaki Station on the JR Gakkentoshi Line (formerly Katamachi Line)

Hiraoka Shrine Kodaiko Festival (Small Drum Festival)

The Kodaiko Matsuri (Small Drum Festival) is held every May at Hiraoka Shrine in Higashiosaka City.
May 5th is known in Japan as "Children's Day," a day dedicated to celebrating children and wishing for their healthy growth. Every year on Children's Day, Hiraoka Shrine hosts the Kodaiko Matsuri (Small Drum Festival), with local children playing a central role in the festivities.
During this festival, a parade is held featuring mikoshi — traditional Japanese festival floats. The mikoshi used in the Kodaiko Matsuri are specially made in a smaller size, carried by groups of several to dozens of children, who parade through the streets and bring the mikoshi to the shrine.
When I visited last year, it was a truly heartwarming sight to see the children enthusiastically chanting and working together to carry the beautifully decorated, small but elaborate mikoshi.
If you are looking to witness a lively traditional Osaka event this May 2026, be sure to pay a visit to Hiraoka Shrine.
- Date: Typically May 5 each year
- Access: 1 minute walk from Hiraoka Station on the Kintetsu Nara Line
- Admission: Free

Unoha Shinto Ritual

At Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine, the Unoha Shinto Ritual is held every May. Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine is one of Osaka's most historic and prestigious shrines, founded in the 3rd century.
The Unoha Shinto Ritual is a traditional event celebrating the founding of Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine. Traditional Shinto ceremonies are performed, and visitors can enjoy elegant Bugaku dance and music performances.
"Unoha" refers to Deutzia (Utsugi) in Japanese, a plant that blooms with white flowers in May. In Shinto belief, Deutzia is considered a sacred plant capable of purifying impurity, and its branches are used in the Unoha Shinto Ritual as well.
Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine is also home to a beautiful Unohana Garden, where many Deutzia plants are cultivated. The garden is open to the public on a limited basis for one month in May, when the Deutzia flowers are in bloom.
If you are visiting Osaka in May, be sure to stop by Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine to enjoy both a traditional Shinto ritual and the beautiful Deutzia blossoms — a perfect addition to your Osaka Event May 2026 experience.

Natural Attractions in Osaka in May
Here, I'll introduce events where you can fully enjoy Osaka's natural beauty in May.
Osaka Rose Festival

This is an event where you can see, smell, and experience various types of roses at the Osaka Rose Festival. The festival offers many attractions including rose collection exhibitions, rose competitions, workshops, and rose seedling sales, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the world of roses.
As a rose enthusiast who has visited before, I vividly remember being overwhelmed by the elegant fragrance of roses the moment I entered the venue. Unlike perfumes or aromatic oils, the natural flower fragrance is strong yet subtle, making you want to keep inhaling it! The roses blooming everywhere create picture-perfect scenes, giving you the feeling of viewing artwork in a museum.
At the venue, you can also appreciate rare single-bloom original species roses. Since there are few events where you can see so many roses at once, I encourage everyone to visit, even if you're not particularly fond of roses. You're sure to become captivated by these beautiful roses.

EXPO '70 Commemorative Park Rose Festa

The EXPO '70 Commemorative Park Rose Festa is held at the "Peace Rose Garden" in the center of the park. The "Peace Rose Garden," established during the 1970 Osaka Expo, features approximately 2,400 rose bushes of about 250 varieties, including rare species from around the world.
My recommendation is the climbing rose arch. The contrast between the white and pink climbing roses along the arches and the fresh green foliage is spectacular. Walking through the successive arches feels like getting lost in a castle made of roses.
During the event, various programs including concerts, workshops, and guided tours are offered. I participated in a guided tour by a rose sommelier. Learning from professionals while observing actual roses helped me understand their depth and made me appreciate roses even more.
Why not experience nature's wonder by viewing and smelling the roses blooming gracefully under the blue sky?

Wisteria Festival at Fujiidera Temple
Source:Fujiidera City
The Fujiidera Wisteria Festival is an event where you can appreciate the wisteria trellis at Fujiidera Temple, known for its wisteria. The wisteria, which has been blooming for 1,000 years, evokes a sense of traditional Japanese atmosphere.
The best viewing time is during this period when the colors are deep and a sweet fragrance fills the air. I've visited myself. The wisteria flowers hanging from above create an effect like a purple shower, and I was mesmerized by this fantastic atmosphere. The unique jasmine-like fragrance of wisteria is also pleasant, making me stay longer than planned.
Limited-edition Goshuin stamps (temple visit proof stamps) featuring wisteria flowers are available to coincide with the blooming period. Since these are only available during this season, make sure to check them out.

Bier Bravo! ~Craft Beer Carnival~
Source:Official website
Beer Bravo! ~Craft Beer Carnival~ is an event with the concept "From KANSAI to the World," featuring carefully selected craft beers from across Japan. Besides the exceptional beers, there are also food booths offering local specialties, so you'll definitely want to get beer refills!
There are four types of beer tickets:
- 3-ticket set: ¥1,800
- 5-ticket set: ¥3,000
- 10-ticket set: ¥6,000
- Trial set: ¥1,500
I purchased the 5-ticket set (¥3,000). When you're unsure which beer to choose from the extensive selection, try referring to the product feature posters displayed in front of each shop. I fell in love with a fruity craft beer with minimal bitterness and ended up ordering it online after the event.
The spacious outdoor venue offers a sense of freedom, and drinking beer while feeling the pleasant May breeze is fantastic! Take this opportunity to fully indulge in drinks and food during the daytime and satisfy both body and soul!
