"Mikoshi Washing Ritual" Performed Before the Sumiyoshi Festival's Mikoshi Togyo
Another must-see at the Sumiyoshi Festival is the "Mikoshi washing ritual" performed before the mikoshi togyo. The Mikoshi washing ritual is a sacred ceremony to purify the sacred mikoshi in preparation for the climactic mikoshi togyo.
The reason I recommend the Mikoshi washing ritual is that by observing it, you can closely experience the concept of purification in Japanese Shinto and the reverence for nature.
The cleansing of the mikoshi is performed with sacred seawater from Osaka Bay, which is said to be pure and enhances the power of the deities.
The solemn purification ceremony has a mystical atmosphere, different from the dynamic mikoshi togyo. Foreign tourists wanting to experience authentic Japanese traditions should visit the venue.

At the "Summer purification ritual and annual festival" held annually on July 31, you can experience a sensation of traveling back in time to ancient Japan.
The Summer purification ritual and annual festival is a purification ceremony that is treated as an important traditional event to be preserved in Osaka.
The highlight is definitely the participants' costumes. Women and children dressed in colorful traditional attire beautifully adorn the venue. Therefore, you can take Instagram-worthy photos wherever you point your camera.
The main ritual of the event is "Passing through a large ring of interwoven grasses." When passing through the large ring of interwoven grasses, Japanese poems wishing for longevity and health are recited, so please listen carefully.

The Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival, Previously Held Every August, Continues to Be Held in October
The Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival, long cherished as a staple of Osaka's summer scenery, is scheduled to be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026 as its 38th edition.
Although this fireworks festival was traditionally held in August, in recent years the date has been shifted due to concerns over extreme heat and operational reasons, and it has continued to be held in autumn.
Unfortunately, visitors coming to Osaka in August 2026 will not be able to see this fireworks festival.

You might be wondering — does that mean there are no fireworks to enjoy in Osaka in August? Not at all!
Osaka is home to a variety of unique and exciting fireworks events beyond the Yodogawa Fireworks Festival. Here, we introduce three fireworks festivals, each with its own distinct charm — romantic fireworks reflected on the surface of a pond, fireworks launched up close from a mountainside, and breathtaking fireworks shot from the sea.
Sakura Festival Summer Blossom Night at Sayama Pond
Set against the backdrop of Sayama Pond, known as the oldest reservoir in Japan, the "Sakura Festival Summer Blossom Night in Sayama Pond" is a fireworks event held every year on August 1. It carries on the legacy of a large-scale fireworks festival once held in this area, and is becoming an established new symbol of summer in the region.
The fireworks are launched from the center of the pond for approximately 30 minutes starting around 7:45 PM. The sight of colorful fireworks reflecting beautifully on the surface of the historic Sayama Pond is truly breathtaking.
One of the unique highlights of this event is that the fireworks can be viewed from any direction, as the pond is surrounded by viewing space on all 360 degrees.
The venue also features over 60 food trucks open from before noon, offering a wide variety of food and drinks. A great way to spend the day is to enjoy strolling between the food trucks during the daytime and then watch the fireworks as evening falls — a full day of fun in one place.

Ibaraki Benzaiten Fireworks Festival
This fireworks festival is a beloved summer tradition in the northern area of Osaka. Held within the grounds of Bentenshu Meioji Temple, this festival boasts a history of over 70 years and takes place every year on August 8.
Approximately 3,000 fireworks light up the night sky over about 60 minutes, making it one of summer's major events in the area.
Heart-shaped and other novelty fireworks are also launched throughout the show, keeping the crowd guessing and excited about what comes next. The finale features a star mine that fills the night sky as if golden and silver showers are raining down, drawing simultaneous cheers from the audience.
Because the fireworks are launched from the top of a mountain, the distance between spectators and the fireworks is remarkably close, allowing you to feel the full impact of the sound and light with your entire body. When I visited, I let out a gasp at the sensation of fireworks seemingly falling right above my head. The thunderous booming that reverberates through your chest is something you can only experience at this close range.

Senshu Yume Hanabi in Sennan (Largest Scale in Osaka)
This is one of the largest ocean fireworks festivals in Osaka and a highly popular Osaka event in August 2026. The venue is SENNAN LONG PARK, a recently rising tourist destination. Set against the backdrop of a stunning coastline selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Sunset Spots, the event features vibrant fireworks synchronized with music.
At the 2025 edition, fireworks were launched from three barges for the first time in seven years, dramatically expanding the scale of the show with a wider launch area.
All seats are assigned, so there is no need to reserve a spot in advance, and you can enjoy the food trucks and on-site events at your own pace throughout the evening.
The location offers a panoramic view of Kansai International Airport, adding to the spectacular atmosphere.
In addition, a drone show is held simultaneously, and the combination of drone art drawn across the night sky and the fireworks creates a cutting-edge experience unlike anything you would find at a traditional fireworks festival.
When I visited, I was so captivated by the fantastical sight of the fireworks and drone lights reflected on the surface of the sea that I found myself setting down my phone and simply taking it all in.

The reason I recommend this event is that the festival takes place in a historical stage surrounded by important cultural properties.
Shitennoji Temple was the first officially established Buddhist temple in Japan over 1,400 years ago. The sight of such historical architecture dimly illuminated by lantern light at night is beautiful and evokes a nostalgic atmosphere.
Furthermore, the scene of people in yukatas dancing around a huge yagura (tower) in the center of the venue to the rhythm of drums and flutes is full of traditional charm.

BANPAKU SUMMER FESTIVAL
Also held at Expo '70 Commemorative Park — the same venue as SUMMER SONIC — BANPAKU SUMMER FESTIVAL is a casual outdoor summer event that everyone can enjoy, from families to couples.
The first thing that catches your eye when you arrive is the Tower of the Sun, standing approximately 70 meters tall. Designed by artist Okamoto Taro for the 1970 Osaka World Expo, this monument is one of Osaka's most iconic landmarks and a hugely popular photo spot on social media.
Set against this giant work of art, the festival spreads out with live stages, a food area featuring regional cuisine from across Japan, and hands-on attractions for both children and adults.
One highlight I particularly recommend is the beer garden area. You can sit back, watch the stage events, and before you know it, hours have passed.

Tennoji Tenshiba Summer Festival
Held at Tenshiba, the entrance area of Tennoji Park, the Tenshiba Natsu Matsuri is a summer festival right in the heart of the city — perfect for dropping by between sightseeing spots.
Food trucks and stalls line the spacious lawn area, making it easy to soak up the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese summer festival.
You can also try classic Japanese festival games like goldfish scooping and yo-yo balloon fishing, making this the ideal spot for anyone who wants a taste of what a Japanese festival is really like.
Right next door are Tennoji Zoo and Abeno Harukas, a high-rise building reaching 300 meters above ground. You can take in a panoramic view of Osaka from the observation deck and then head straight into the summer festival — a combination course well worth trying.
I've stopped by this event on my way home from work, and it was a surprisingly relaxing space that made you forget you were in the middle of the city.

Osaka Castle Festival 2026
This is a must-see Osaka Event August 2026 for castle enthusiasts and history lovers alike.

The last time I visited, the corner where you could try on a suit of armor and take photos had a massive queue. Slipping into that weighty armor truly gives you the feeling of becoming a Sengoku warrior.

Summer Riverside Picnic on the Water
This is a one-of-a-kind experiential activity where you drift along Osaka's river on a boat while enjoying a picnic.
The venue is located at the foot of Honmachi-bashi, the oldest surviving bridge in Osaka.
You slip off your shoes, step onto a boat floating on the river, and then spend 90 minutes however you like — it's as simple as that.
Food and drinks are welcome to bring on board, so grab some takoyaki and beer — Osaka staples — and you've got yourself a little party on the water.
The overhead expressway provides a canopy above, protecting you from direct sunlight and the occasional sudden rain shower. The breeze drifting across the river keeps things refreshingly cool, so you can enjoy yourself comfortably even in the intense summer heat of Osaka.
