Osaka April 2026: Hidden Cherry Blossoms & 15 Best Events Guide
One of the must-see attractions in Osaka during New Year's is the fireworks show at Universal Studios Japan (USJ). I once celebrated New Year's Eve there myself, and the spectacular display was absolutely breathtaking.
However, USJ park tickets for December 31st are extremely competitive and often sell out as soon as they go on sale. As a result, many international visitors miss out on the chance to enjoy the New Year's fireworks at USJ.
But January offers much more than just fireworks - there are many events where you can experience Japanese traditions and Osaka's culture, including hatsumode (first shrine visit of the year) at Sumiyoshi Taisha and Osaka Tenmangu shrines, as well as nationally famous unusual festivals. In this article, I've carefully selected my favorite events to share with you.
Also, I think "it would be a shame to visit Osaka without fully experiencing the local food culture!!," so this article introduces not just events but also Magical Trip tours. Our popular "Osaka Bar Hopping Night Tour in Namba" and "Kuromon Market Walking Street Food Tour in Osaka" are outstanding tours that popular same as "Tokyo Bar Hopping Night Tour in Shinjuku," which was ranked #1 among all tours on TripAdvisor in 2024.

Osaka Castle Spring Festival
Source:Official website
When it comes to big Osaka events in April 2026, the "Osaka Castle Spring Festival" is the one to mention. Approximately 300 cherry trees bloom magnificently throughout the vast grounds of Osaka Castle Park. The attractive point is that you can enjoy it however you like—spreading out a picnic sheet for hanami (flower viewing) or leisurely strolling while admiring the blossoms.
Many food stalls and kitchen cars are also set up. There's a diverse lineup from Osaka gourmet foods like takoyaki and kushikatsu to stylish sweets.
When I visited last year, an event featuring sake from all over Japan was being held, and I savored festival food and sake under the cherry blossoms in full bloom.
On windless days, you can see the beautiful sight of the castle and cherry blossoms reflected on the surface of the moat. Peach blossoms also reach their peak in early April, so please enjoy them together!
Enjoy "Nishinomaru Garden Cherry Blossom Night Viewing" as Well!
Source:Official website
During the festival period, Nishinomaru Garden, located on the west side of the main tower, extends its opening hours so visitors can enjoy illuminated cherry blossoms at night. I love viewing the night cherry blossoms from here, and I've guided foreign friends here many times.
The highlight is undoubtedly the fantastical scenery of cherry blossoms blooming magnificently with the impressive main tower as a backdrop. The contrast of three colors—the black of the night sky, the white of the main tower, and the pink of the cherry blossoms—can only be seen during this season and at this time of day.
My recommendation is to start filming a video slightly before sunset. You can capture beautiful footage of the slowly changing sky colors and the cherry blossoms.
Special fees may apply during the festival period, so please check the official website in advance.

Hirakata Park: Light Amusement Park
Source:Official website
"Hirakata Park," known as Japan's oldest amusement park, is currently holding a spring-like gorgeous illumination event.
My recommended spots:
- "Lantern Square of Light" where lanterns with warm lights float up
- The giant "Flower and Fairy Tree" decorated with various flowers
- "Magical Dress," an interactive illumination that changes colors
- "Light Flower Tunnel" that changes color depending on the viewing angle
The attractive point is that you can enjoy it not just by looking, but by walking through and touching the displays. You can also experience an immersive sensation, as if diving into the illuminations while riding attractions.
If you love the uniquely Japanese "kawaii" atmosphere and fantasy world settings, please visit!

Sakai Knife Festival
Source:Official website
"Sakai Hamono," made in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, are traditional Japanese kitchen knives. They are known for their amazing sharpness and simple, beautiful design, and are highly popular among chefs worldwide.
The "Sakai Knife Festival" is a unique Osaka event in April 2026 where you can experience hands-on sessions with professional-grade knives and watch demonstrations of blade sharpening. Since it's a precious opportunity to purchase directly from skilled knife craftsmen, the number of visitors from overseas has been increasing in recent years.
Watching worn knives with damaged blades being sharpened and restored to like-new condition is truly artisan craftsmanship.
This event is recommended not only for professional chefs but also for cooking enthusiasts and those interested in traditional Japanese industries. Don't miss this opportunity!

Traditional Events in Osaka for April 2026
Shitennoji Temple Shoryoe

"Shoryoe" is considered the most important ceremony at Shitennoji Temple. It is held on the anniversary of Prince Shotoku's death (April 22), who created Japan's first constitution and spread Buddhism.
To commemorate Prince Shotoku, Bugaku (court music and dance) that was performed during the Heian period (794-1185) is presented in its original style. "Shitennoji Bugaku," designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, is a fusion of music and dance originating from China and India.
Please pay attention to the unique masks and the colorful, gorgeous costumes. It's an event where you can feel the Japanese atmosphere in a magnificent setting. It's also recommended for those interested in traditional performing arts and Buddhist culture!

The Seiwa Genji Festival is held annually in April in Kawanishi City, Hyogo Prefecture. The main event is a historical parade featuring about 220 citizens participating as mounted warriors and child warriors.
The festival began in 1953 as a celebration at Tada Shrine. Tada Shrine, founded in 970, is a historically significant shrine known as the birthplace of Seiwa Genji, son of Emperor Seiwa.
During the Seiwa Genji Festival, participants dressed in period costumes, including armor and helmets, parade elegantly through the city. If you're interested in traditional costumes, the Seiwa Genji Festival parade is definitely worth watching.

Domyoji Tenmangu Shrine Fude Matsuri (Brush Festival)
Source:Official website
At Domyoji Tenmangu, a shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning, a unique ritual is held to honor brushes. This ceremony expresses gratitude for well-used brushes and offers prayers for improvement in calligraphy skills.
Many visitors include calligraphy teachers and students, who bring old brushes with worn-out bristles to be burned as an offering. This Osaka event in April 2026 embodies a distinctly Japanese spirit of treating tools with gratitude and care until the very end, rather than simply discarding them.
I personally enjoy taking my time browsing through the antique market held on the shrine grounds. You might discover some unexpected treasures! The grounds also feature colorful flowers and vibrant fresh greenery to enjoy.
This event is recommended for those who want to experience authentic Japanese culture.

Kumata Shrine Otaue Shinji (Rice Planting Ritual)
Source:Official website
The Otaue Shinji at Kumata Shrine is a traditional event that has been passed down in this region for generations. Dances imitating rice planting movements are performed to pray for an abundant harvest.
The ritual is structured like a theatrical performance, with the shrine's worship hall representing a rice paddy, featuring somewhat humorous movements. Each movement carries its own meaning. The seeds scattered on the stage during the performance can be taken home by visitors as good luck charms for financial fortune.
While not particularly flashy, this Osaka event in April 2026 offers a glimpse into the local pride of Osaka residents and the simple warmth of agricultural culture. Since this type of event doesn't exist in my hometown, I found it deeply fascinating when I first witnessed it.
This event is recommended for those who want to experience a traditional festival with a local atmosphere.

Matsunae Shinji (Pine Seedling Ritual)
Source:Official website
The Matsunae Shinji at Sumiyoshi Taisha is a ceremony praying for an abundant harvest. Pine tree seedlings, which are symbols of the Sumiyoshi district, are offered to the place where the deity resides. A distinctive feature of this ritual is that the offered pine seedlings are planted on the shrine grounds.
My recommended highlight is the elegant songs and dances performed by shrine maidens (miko).
Their flowing movements while holding bells and fans exude a refined dignity even within their gentle motions. It's also interesting to pay attention to their costumes, including the red and white hakama and hair ornaments.
This Osaka event in April 2026 is recommended for those who want to enjoy an elegant atmosphere reminiscent of Japan's Heian period (794-1185). Be sure to also check out the uniquely shaped pine trees on the shrine grounds!

Shoinden Sai (Shoinden Festival)
Source:Official website
The Shoinden Sai, held near Sumiyoshi Taisha, is a ceremony commemorating Emperor Go-Murakami, who spent his final days in this location.
A magnificent residence where Emperor Go-Murakami once lived stood at this site. Much of the vast grounds, spanning approximately 10,000 tsubo (about 33,000 square meters), has now become residential areas, parks, and roads. A stone monument was erected on a portion of the remaining land, designating it as "Shoinden Ato" (Shoinden Historic Site).
Under skies adorned with dancing cherry blossoms, a solemn ceremony is conducted before the stone monument. This Osaka event in April 2026 is recommended for those interested in Japanese history and those who want to experience traditional ceremonies.
Sumiyoshi Park, known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, is nearby, so please enjoy cherry blossom viewing as well!

Oitoshiboshi Shrine Spring Festival
Source:Official website
An annual spring festival is held at Otoshi Shrine, a subordinate shrine of Sumiyoshi Taisha. Known affectionately by locals as "Oitoshiboshi-san," this shrine is believed to bring blessings for improved financial fortune.
A unique feature of this shrine is the "Omokaru Ishi" (Heavy-Light Stone) placed in front of the shrine. This stone can tell you whether your wish will come true based on how heavy it feels when you lift it.
After lifting the stone once, you place it down, put your hands on it, and make a wish. Then lift it again—if it feels lighter than the first time, your wish will come true. I tried it myself, and it did seem to feel lighter the second time!
During this Osaka event in April 2026, this becomes a popular spot with long lines. Please give it a try!

Otori Taisha Hanatsumi Sai (Flower Picking Festival)
Source:Official website
The Hanatsumi Sai held at Otori Taisha is a historically significant event meant to ward off disasters and epidemics. This spring-appropriate, colorful festival has become one of my favorite events.
The highlight of this festival is the parade featuring children and women dressed in vivid traditional costumes. They walk through the town and shopping streets before returning to the shrine. The sight of women walking along the shrine's long approach path wearing flower-adorned hats is an impressive scene heralding the arrival of spring.
Colorful seasonal flowers are offered throughout the grounds, filling the shrine with the fragrance of spring. This Osaka event in April 2026 is recommended for those who want to fully experience Japanese spring with all five senses, as well as those looking to capture beautiful, colorful photographs.
