The Charm of Yoshino
Yoshino, located in Nara prefecture where you can enjoy deeper history than Kyoto, is an area that occupies more than half of Nara prefecture's area. "Shugendo," which has had deep connections with nature worship since ancient times, has been practiced here, and it's an area where you can experience the spiritual power that nature possesses.
The entire Yoshino area is registered as a World Heritage site, and many of the shrines and temples in Yoshino are also registered as UNESCO World Heritage sites and national treasures. Because it has been difficult for people to visit, it escaped disasters such as wars, and you can explore shrines and temples that maintain the same appearance as they had in those days.
Additionally, Mt. Yoshino has 30,000 cherry blossom trees growing on it, and it's beloved as one of Japan's largest cherry blossom scenic spots. Many tourists visit from both domestic and international locations, so there are also plenty of shops where you can enjoy exquisite cuisine.
Yoshino is an area where you can enjoy all elements of nature, history, and tourism.
Route Overview of One-day Itinerary from Kyoto to Yoshino
Why don't you visit Nara, which has an even longer history than Kyoto? Especially Yoshino is a sacred area existing in the mountains that has been registered as a World Heritage site. This time, I will introduce a sightseeing plan to fully enjoy Yoshino in one day from Kyoto station.
Starting with access methods to Yoshino, I will introduce tourist spots throughout the vast Yoshino area according to the schedule. The content is packed with visits to traces of people who were active in Yoshino over 1000 years ago, such as "Emperor Godaigo" and "Saigyo hoshi" who have deep connections with Yoshino, and visits to observation decks where you can view magnificent natural scenery.
Additionally, I will introduce lunch shops and sweet shops that I, as a gourmet enthusiast, recommend. By reading this article, you can experience fulfilling Yoshino sightseeing!
One-day Itinerary to Enjoy Yoshino's Beautiful Nature and Shrines and Temples
In this tour, we will head to Yoshino's remote area "Okusenbon" by bus, and from there enjoy sightseeing while descending the mountain. By traveling one way by bus, you can move with time to spare.
Conversely, it's also possible to enjoy sightseeing while climbing the mountain by going in reverse of the route introduced this time. Please choose according to your physical strength and the tourist spots you want to enjoy.
In the Yoshino area, after May 10th when cherry blossom season ends, buses only operate on weekends, so sightseeing on weekends is recommended.
7:00AM: Depart from Kyoto
Kintetsu Kyoto station is located on the south side of JR Kyoto station. Those staying at hotels far from the station should depart from their hotel with about 30 minutes to spare, considering potential delays in bus transportation. Although there are toilets on the train, it's best to use the toilets within the station premises before departure.
For those who want to enjoy the train journey in spacious seats, I also recommend boarding the Limited Express, which costs an additional 920 yen to Kashiharajingu-mae.
9:30AM: After arriving in Yoshino, visit Yoshino Jingu Shrine
Upon arriving in Yoshino, first let's visit "Yoshino Jingu Shrine" located at the entrance of Yoshino.
Yoshino Jingu Shrine was established by Emperor Meiji in 1889 during the Meiji era. The symmetrical shrine buildings made using Japanese cypress are impressive and have received high praise as modern shrine architecture.
Yoshino Jingu Shrine enshrines "Emperor Godaigo," the 96th emperor who was active in the 1300s. It's beloved by locals as a shrine that brings blessings for matchmaking. Please visit and pray for a fulfilling Yoshino sightseeing experience.

The Okusenbon line operates only on weekends during regular periods (from May 10th onwards).
11:00 AM: Visit Saigyo-an, Associated with Japan's Famous Poet "Saigyo"
In the inner depths of Yoshino, the "Okusenbon" area, an unmissable tourist spot is the residence where the poet "Saigyo Hoshi," who was active in the late Heian era of the 1100s, lived after abandoning his samurai life to become a monk.
During the Heian era, a type of poetry called "Tanka" - short poems that connected emotions - was popular, and people expressed their feelings through Tanka. While the exact construction date of Saigyo-an is unknown, this building with nearly 1,000 years of history has a very ancient and atmospheric quality that makes you feel as if you've time-slipped back to the Heian era. When you visit the emotionally rich Saigyo-an, you'll surely find beautiful poems coming to mind.

Tourist Destinations to Visit Together with Saigyo-an: Yoshinoyama Oku-senbon
"Oku-senbon" is the area located at the deepest part of Mt. Yoshinoyama. Situated at an altitude of 600-700 meters, there are numerous spots where you can experience Yoshino's history.
This area allows you to enjoy the beauty of nature throughout the four seasons - cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall. It's an area where you can taste untouched nature while encountering the romance of history. Many spots remain in their original state, giving you the feeling of time travel.
Please enjoy the miracle of history while experiencing the spiritual atmosphere that can only be felt in the mountains of Yoshino.
Tourist Destinations to Visit Together with Saigyo-an: Kinpu Shrine
The Yoshino area was once called "Kinpusen" and has long been known as a sacred territory. "Kinpu Shrine" is a shrine dedicated to "Kanayama Hikonokami," the guardian deity of Kinpusen.
It has protected Yoshino for over 1,000 years since 709. As a deity of mine protection and metals including iron manufacturing, it is now also worshipped as a deity of financial fortune.
Located in the depths of Yoshino's mountains, Kinpu Shrine is also beloved as a power spot where you can deeply feel your connection with nature. Please visit and experience Yoshino's natural blessings and historical romance.

Yoshino, famous for cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall, attracts many tourists seeking spectacular views during the seasons. Among them, "Takagiyama Observatory," located at a high altitude in the inner depths, offers some of the most beautiful spectacular views in Yoshino. Although it's slightly off the mountain path and requires climbing about 200 meters of slope, it's one of the spots I confidently recommend visiting during the season.

12:00 PM: Descend the Mountain While Touring Historical Spots
In Yoshino, surrounded by rich nature, there are many spots where you can feel the deep connection between nature and human activity. After enjoying tourism in the Okusenbon area, let's descend the mountain while visiting spots where you can feel nature and history.
Kami-senbon
"Kami-senbon" is an area located at an altitude of 390m to 600m. Even in Yoshino, famous for cherry blossoms, this is an area where many cherry blossoms grow wild, and walking the mountain paths allows you to enjoy strolling while constantly encountering beautiful cherry blossoms. During cherry blossom season, illumination is performed at night, allowing you to encounter the fantastical nighttime scenery of Yoshino that you can't usually experience.
In Kami-senbon, you can not only enjoy beautiful scenery but also find abundant restaurants and cafes where you can taste exquisite cuisine while appreciating the beautiful views. Please enjoy beautiful nature while savoring food.
Yoshino Mikumari Jinja
"Yoshino Mikumari Shrine" is a shrine where seven other deities are enshrined alongside "Ameno Mikumarino-Okami," who governs water distribution. It's a very old shrine, and while the year of reconstruction is uncertain, documents from 698 recorded its existence.
The beautiful main hall with its impressive thatched roof was rebuilt in 1604, but the unchanged architecture from that time evokes the romance of history.
It's also beloved as a power spot, especially effective for conception, safe childbirth, and children's growth. Please experience the beauty of the building and the mystical beauty that the shrine possesses.

Hanayagura Observation Point
"Hanayagura Observation Point" is an observation deck where you can enjoy spectacular views of cherry blossoms blooming in Yoshino. It's also my favorite observation deck, and the cherry blossom scenery viewed from above offers a different panorama from Oku-senbon's Takagiyama Observatory.
Also, at Hanayagura Observation Point, when conditions align, you can see a sea of clouds in the early morning. The world surrounded by a sea of clouds is mystical, allowing you to truly experience why Yoshino has been beloved as a sacred territory.

1:00 PM: Lunch at Restaurants Where You Can Enjoy Yoshino's Nature and Spectacular Views
The mountain paths of Yoshino have many shops, and there are multiple restaurants where you can enjoy meals. There are many establishments where you can taste the traditional flavors of Yoshino and Nara prefecture, allowing you to discover the culinary attractions of the region. Here, I will introduce four shops that I recommend.
Unagi-ya Taikoban
Source:Official website
"Taikoban" is a restaurant where you can taste exquisite eel that focuses on domestic sources. In Japan, eel is beloved by the name "Unagi," and it is mainly steamed and grilled, then coated in a sauce based on soy sauce and sugar. It has excellent compatibility with rice and is one of my favorite foods.
At Taikoban, you can enjoy "Unajyu" which is various sizes of Unagi served over rice, as well as "Hitsumabushi" which is enjoyed with dashi soup and condiments like green onions and seaweed.
It's voluminous and provides stamina, so it's also recommended for those who want to eat heartily before afternoon exploration.

Yamatoan
Source:Tabelog
"Yamatoan" is impressive with its old folk house that lets you feel the good old atmosphere of Japan, and is a restaurant where you can taste fresh "Soba noodle" made in the store.
The Soba noodles made from Soba grown in Nagano prefecture, which is famous for Soba, and the beautiful water flowing in Yoshino's great nature, are exquisite and offer a taste that teaches the charm of Japan's countryside.
When you order "Soba noodle," you should also order "seasonal vegetable Tempura" at the same time. The combination of crispy Tempura and chewy Soba noodles is excellent, creating the best combination that further enhances each other's umami.

Hototogisu
Source:Tabelog
"Hototogisu" is a restaurant where you can enjoy local cuisine while fully appreciating the magnificent natural scenery of Yoshino.
Among them, "Yoshino-kudzu gozen" is my recommendation, where you can enjoy a variety of dishes including hot pot dishes featuring Yoshino's specialty "Kudzu," as well as tempura and simmered dishes. It's visually gorgeous and perfect for photos, so it's a luxurious lunch that you can enjoy with both your eyes and tongue.
Also, Yoshino-kudzu gozen changes its contents according to the season, so being able to taste seasonal dishes that can only be enjoyed at that time is one of its attractions.

Shizukatei
Source:Official website
Speaking of local cuisine representing Nara prefecture, it would be "Kakinoha-zushi." Kakinoha-zushi is a dish where sushi topped with marinated trout or mackerel is wrapped in persimmon leaves. The good aroma of the leaves transfers to the sushi, allowing you to enjoy an exquisite taste.
At Shizukatei, you can enjoy Japanese cuisine including Kakinoha-zushi while viewing Yoshino's nature-rich mountains. Since most set meals come with Kakinoha-zushi, including udon and tempura, it's also recommended for those who want to eat a lot.
Also, Kakinoha-zushi for souvenirs is also sold, so it's recommended to purchase some for dinner.

The tour areas of Gion and Pontocho are areas lined with old buildings called "Machiya," with stone pavements and other elements where you can feel Japanese atmosphere.
These are popular areas where even locals find it difficult to make reservations at restaurants, but by participating in the tour, you can always secure restaurants, so you can enjoy hopping comfortably. Please enjoy the deep charm of Japanese cuisine!

2:00 PM: Descending the mountain while exploring historical spots and natural attractions
After enjoying lunch, let's descend the mountain while sightseeing Yoshino's historical spots and natural attractions. Yoshino has many temples and shrines with over 500 years of history, and the buildings remain preserved as they were from that time, allowing you to enjoy tourism while experiencing history firsthand.
Sakuramoto-bō Temple
Source:Yoshino Town
Yoshino has long been home to a religion called "Shugendo," which combines mountain worship, Buddhism, and Shintoism. It is believed that through rigorous training in the mountains, one can acquire the transcendent abilities of nature that can save people.
At Sakuramoto-bo temple, you can experience Shugendo training. You can experience waterfall training where you purify your mind and body under a waterfall, and "Shakyo," which involves copying sutras called "Hannya Shingyo." Please try these experiences and feel the worldview of Shugendo.

Chikurin-in & Gumpoen
"Chikurin-in & Gumpoen" is said to be a garden created by the imperial family member "Shotoku Taishi," who was active in the early 600s. It is now cherished as one of Nara Prefecture's three great gardens, where you can admire a quiet garden surrounded by beautiful greenery.
It now operates as a ryokan (traditional inn) and has a high reputation as an accommodation where you can eat local cuisine using seasonal ingredients from all four seasons. In the outdoor bath, you can slowly heal your body's fatigue while gazing at Yoshino's abundant nature. Nyoirin-ji (Requires slightly deviating from the route)
The 96th Emperor "Godaigo" moved his base to Nara in 1337 to oppose the power of the Ashikaga clan that was ruling Kyoto at the time. From 1337 to 1392, Japan was called the "Nanbokucho era," divided into two opposing forces in Kyoto and Nara.
Since Emperor Godaigo was based in Yoshino, there are many shrines and temples related to Emperor Godaigo in Yoshino.
Behind Nyoirin-ji lies the tomb where Emperor Godaigo was buried, and many treasures from the Nanbokucho era are stored within the temple grounds. This is a temple where you can physically feel the Nanbokucho era, and it's definitely a spot you should visit if you become interested in this period.

3:00 PM: Savoring Yoshino's Japanese sweets surrounded by beautiful nature
When it comes to Yoshino's specialty Japanese sweets, "Kudzu" is the standout. Kudzu is a powder made from the starch of the roots of the leguminous plant "Kudzu." The creamy taste of sweets made with Kudzu is exceptional.
Nakai Shunpudo
Source:Official website
The Kudzu sweets you must try in Yoshino are "Kudzu-mochi" and "Kudzukiri." The difference between these two lies in their preparation method: Kudzu-mochi has a smooth, jelly-like texture, while Kudzukiri offers a more chewy taste than Kudzu-mochi.
Nakai Shunpudo's Kudzu-mochi and Kudzukiri are made only with high-quality Kudzu harvested in Yoshino and water. When served, they have a crystal-clear transparency, but as they cool, the Kudzu turns white, so the expiration time is said to be just 10 minutes.
The "Kuro-mitsu" (brown sugar syrup) and "Kinako" (soybean powder) served together have excellent compatibility and further enhance the delicious taste of Yoshino's beautiful water and the gentle flavor of Kudzu. This quality of Kudzu sweets can only be encountered in Yoshino, the production area, so please definitely try them.

Houkon-an
Source:Tabelog
For those who want to taste various variations of Kudzu sweets, Houkon-an is recommended.
You can taste Kudzu prepared in various ways, including Kudzu-mochi and Kudzukiri, "Kudzu-yu" (a drink made by dissolving Kudzu in hot water), and "Kudzu-azuki" enjoyed together with "Anko" (sweet red bean paste), which is essential for Japanese sweets.
"Kudzu-hana," which wraps Anko inside Kudzu-mochi, is a dish I confidently recommend, where you can enjoy its adorable appearance and the excellent marriage of Kudzu and Anko.

The area around Yoshinoyama Ropeway Station is rich with tourist spots including temples, souvenir shops, hot springs, and cafes. Please enjoy shopping and strolling through the traditional shops that retain their old-world charm.
Kinpusen-ji
Kinpusen-ji Temple is a temple with over 1,000 years of history, built in the late 7th century. It serves as the headquarters of a religion called "Shugendo," which combines nature worship with Buddhism and Shintoism. Even today in Yoshino, you can encounter ascetic practitioners called "Yamabushi" dressed in white robes.
The main hall "Zaodo" is a dignified structure that is both a national treasure and registered as a World Heritage Site, remaining unchanged since its reconstruction in 1592. Inside, three Buddha statues called "Kongo Zao Gongen" with impressive blue bodies are enshrined. The blue bodies are said to represent compassion and tolerance, and their large, majestic appearance allows you to feel the spirit of ancient Japan.
