What is Kanazawa?

Kanazawa

Kanazawa is the prefectural capital of Ishikawa Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan. Kanazawa flourished as a castle town of the Kaga Domain, which boasted one of Japan's largest scales during the Edo period, and is famous as a historic tourist city where traditions from approximately 400 years ago have been passed down to the present day.

Kanazawa is a nationally famous tourist destination known for Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan's three most beautiful gardens, traditional beautiful tea house districts, and fresh seafood. For Japanese people, Kanazawa is popular as a prestigious travel destination where you can experience traditional streetscapes and culture.

Among foreign tourists, Kanazawa is gaining popularity as a tourist destination where you can enjoy Japan's samurai culture through historic tea house districts and samurai residences. Additionally, one of the reasons for Kanazawa's popularity is that you can experience traditional crafts unique to Kanazawa, such as gold leaf application and Kutani ware.

Kanazawa's Location and Access

Kanazawa is located on the Sea of Japan side in the central part of Japan's main island. Kanazawa is an area with excellent transportation access, including direct access from Japan's capital Tokyo via shinkansen and airplane. Kanazawa is also a tourist destination easily accessible from major domestic cities such as Osaka and Nagoya.

The main access methods to Kanazawa are shinkansen, bus/automobile, and airplane. Below, we'll introduce details of travel time and costs for each transportation method to highlight the best options for your journey.

Shinkansen

Shinkansen

Among access methods from Japan's capital Tokyo to Kanazawa, the Hokuriku Shinkansen is particularly popular with many users. The advantages of using the shinkansen are short travel time and no transfers required.

Using the Hokuriku Shinkansen, you can reach Kanazawa from Tokyo in approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. The cost for a reserved seat on the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kanazawa is approximately 14,000 yen (half price for children, free for infants and babies).

The Hokuriku Shinkansen stops at Kanazawa Station, which serves as the base for Kanazawa tourism. Kanazawa Station has bus terminals for touring major tourist spots and rental car shops. Arriving in Kanazawa via Hokuriku Shinkansen allows you to smoothly begin your Kanazawa sightseeing.

Bus and Automobile

Bus and Automobile

From major domestic cities to Kanazawa, you can also access smoothly via highway bus or automobile. The advantages of using highway buses or automobiles are reasonable costs and convenient travel from various cities and tourist destinations throughout Japan.

Highway buses to and from Kanazawa operate direct services from popular Japanese tourist destinations such as Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Shirakawa-go (Gifu). For example, from Tokyo to Kanazawa takes about 7-8 hours by highway bus, costing approximately 5,000-8,000 yen.

Additionally, since Japan has a well-developed highway system, traveling to Kanazawa by automobile is also convenient. Highway tolls to Kanazawa are approximately 10,000 yen from Tokyo and about 8,000 yen from Osaka.

However, travel times are longer: about 5.5 hours from Tokyo without traffic jams, and about 3.5 hours from Osaka.

Airplane

Airplane

When accessing Kanazawa by airplane, you use Komatsu Airport located within Ishikawa Prefecture. Travel time from Haneda Airport (Tokyo) to Komatsu Airport is approximately 1 hour. Costs vary by airline and season but are around 30,000 yen.

From Komatsu Airport to Kanazawa, you can access smoothly via direct bus (travel time: approximately 45 minutes, cost: 1,300 yen as of June 2025).

When traveling to Kanazawa, shinkansen or airplane is recommended for those who want to travel in the shortest time possible, while highway bus or automobile is recommended for those wanting to reduce costs. The highway bus between Tokyo and Kanazawa is an overnight service, so it's an efficient way to travel for those confident in their physical stamina.

What Kind of City is Kanazawa! A Travel Enthusiast's Carefully Selected Explanation of Kanazawa's Attractions

Kanazawa is a historic city that flourished as a castle town during the Edo period, while also being a gourmet city blessed with fresh seafood due to its location facing the Sea of Japan. Additionally, Kanazawa is a city that has both aspects: preserving traditional crafts while also being a cultural city where contemporary art gathers.

This time, as a travel enthusiast, I'll introduce a carefully selected range of Kanazawa's diverse attractions, so please check them out. Any tourist map should highlight these key areas and neighborhoods for the best experience.

Developed from a Castle Town, You Can Still Enjoy Historic Streetscapes Today

Developed from a Castle Town, You Can Still Enjoy Historic Streetscapes Today

Kanazawa is a historic city that developed as a castle town of the Kaga Domain ruled by the Maeda Family approximately 400 years ago. Since Kanazawa escaped war damage and large-scale disasters, streetscapes from the castle town era remain even today.

Particularly, Higashi Chaya District, a popular tourist spot in Kanazawa, has the entire street designated by the government as a valuable traditional architectural complex. In this tea house neighborhood, you can enjoy strolling through retro streetscapes with stone-paved roads and traditional wooden architecture.

Besides this, Kanazawa offers experiences of historic streetscapes through other historic tea house districts such as Nishi Chaya District and Kazuemachi Chaya District, as well as Nagamachi Samurai District where Kaga Domain samurai lived.

Please enjoy the beautiful streetscapes unique to Kanazawa, as if you've time-slipped back to the Edo period.

Facing the Sea, You Can Taste Exquisite Seafood That Varies by Season

Facing the Sea, You Can Taste Exquisite Seafood That Varies by Season

The waters off Ishikawa Prefecture where Kanazawa is located are areas where warm and cold currents meet, creating nutrient-rich good fishing grounds. In Kanazawa, where warm-water and cold-water fish species coexist, you can taste various exquisite seafood that differs by season.

Representative seafood of Kanazawa includes Blackthroat seaperch, known as a luxury fish, and sweet shrimp. Blackthroat seaperch is characterized by its ability to taste the sweetness of high-quality fat through sushi or salt-grilling. Sweet shrimp offers a rich taste with natural sweetness and creamy texture that lingers on the tongue.

Also, my recommendation is Kano crab, which symbolizes Kanazawa's autumn to winter seasons. This precious Kano crab with limited fishing season allows you to enjoy rare seasonal flavors even in Kanazawa.

When visiting Kanazawa, please try fresh, exquisite seafood dishes at Omicho Market, sushi restaurants, or izakaya (Japanese-style bars).

Kanazawa is also famous as a modern art city where innovative contemporary architecture and art converge. Kanazawa has many spots where you can enjoy the fusion of historic Kanazawa streets with contemporary art, including museums and libraries such as the popular 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.

Among these, my favorite is the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, which symbolizes Kanazawa's contemporary art culture. This museum exhibits avant-garde artworks from artists associated with Kanazawa to world-renowned artists. Additionally, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa features an attractive massive circular glass building.

Kanazawa also has other beautiful buildings and art works, including the "Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art" where you can appreciate modern and contemporary artworks and precious art pieces such as national treasures, and the "Kanazawa Umimirai Library" which won domestic and international architectural awards for its innovative design.

In Kanazawa, please also appreciate the architecture and artworks that are uniquely Kanazawa, where tradition and innovation harmonize.

Kanazawa, where 400-year-old traditions still breathe today, offers abundant tourist spots where you can experience authentic Japanese culture, including Kanazawa Castle and Kenrokuen Garden, as well as tea house districts that remain unchanged from that era.

We've carefully selected 8 unmissable tourist destinations to highlight when visiting Kanazawa, including spots where you can experience beautiful seas. Be sure to check out this comprehensive Kanazawa guide and use it as your map to explore these remarkable neighborhoods.

Kenroku-en

Kenroku-en

Kenrokuen Garden is one of Kanazawa's most popular and representative tourist destinations, absolutely essential for any Kanazawa guide. Kenrokuen Garden is a masterpiece garden created by the Kaga Domain over a long period during the Edo period and is counted among Japan's three most famous gardens.

Kenrokuen Garden is designed in what's called a "circuit-style garden" format among Japanese gardens. A "circuit-style garden" is a garden style where visitors appreciate the garden while walking around a large pond.

The greatest highlight of Kenrokuen Garden is that you can enjoy nature throughout the four seasons: spring cherry blossoms, beautiful summer greenery, autumn foliage, and winter snow.

Among these, the scenery of "Yukitsuri" - the winter reinforcement to protect trees from snow damage - is an iconic breathtaking view that symbolizes Kenrokuen Garden. Please take your time to enjoy the mystical landscape where pure white snow accumulates on beautiful greenery while strolling leisurely through this magnificent neighborhood.

Kanazawa Castle

Kanazawa Castle

Kanazawa Castle was built as the residence castle of the Maeda Family, who led the Kaga Domain that boasted the largest scale in Japan during the Edo period. Kanazawa Castle is an important cultural heritage that conveys Kanazawa's history to the present day, consisting of precious architectural structures from that era and museums where you can learn about Kanazawa's history.

Kanazawa Castle offers the following main highlights to map out your visit:

Ishikawa-mon Gate: The representative gate of Kanazawa Castle. The current gate was rebuilt in 1788 to replace the original gate that was destroyed by fire.

Sanjukken Nagaya: An earthen-walled warehouse built in 1858, it's one of the few buildings that still exist unchanged from that time, alongside Ishikawa-mon Gate.

Stone Walls: The stone walls supporting the foundation of Kanazawa Castle have different stacking methods depending on the era and location they were built. Castles that use various stacking methods together are rare nationwide, making it enjoyable to compare the different stacking techniques.

Kanazawa Castle also has exhibition facilities equipped with videos and models where you can learn about the castle's architectural structure, making it highly recommended for those who want to deeply understand Kanazawa Castle's history. Since this castle is located just a 5-minute walk from Kenrokuen Garden, please visit both sites together as you explore this historic neighborhood.

Omicho Market

Omicho Market

Omicho Market is a treasure trove of food that boasts about 300 years of history as "Kanazawa's kitchen." This vibrant neighborhood features approximately 170 shops where you can taste exquisite Kanazawa gourmet cuisine, including fresh seafood shops where you can taste fresh seafood caught in the Sea of Japan on the spot, and produce stores selling seasonal vegetables from Kanazawa.

At Omicho Market, there are also plenty of restaurants where you can enjoy seafood bowls and sushi using a wide variety of seafood, as well as Kanazawa's local cuisine. Additionally, local gourmet dishes using Kanazawa ingredients such as "Kanazawa Oden" (a Japanese hot pot dish with vegetables and boiled eggs simmered in broth) and Kanazawa curry are popular among tourists.

Among these, my personal highlight recommendation is dishes using Blackthroat seaperch, a high-quality fish. You can eat Blackthroat seaperch at restaurants serving seafood bowls and sushi. Omicho Market is recommended for those who want to casually experience various Kanazawa gourmet foods while exploring this bustling market neighborhood.

Higashi Chaya District

Higashi Chaya District

Higashi Chaya District is the most famous tea house district among the three tea house districts in Kanazawa. This historic neighborhood is characterized by traditional streetscapes that symbolize Kanazawa and is a popular tourist spot visited by many tourists coming to Kanazawa.

Higashi Chaya District is a tea house district formed about 200 years ago, and its streetscape of stone-paved roads and wooden traditional architecture has been designated by the government as a highly valuable architectural complex.

The highlight of Higashi Chaya District is not only its retro streetscape but also the shopping you can enjoy for Kanazawa's traditional crafts and Japanese sweets. Some shops even allow you to create unique crafts by applying gold leaf, Kanazawa's specialty product, to wooden boxes and chopsticks, creating one-of-a-kind items.

How about enjoying a truly Kanazawa-like experience while strolling through Kanazawa's traditional streetscape and savoring Kanazawa gourmet food and traditional crafts in this charming neighborhood?

Tsuzumi Gate

Tsuzumi Gate

Tsuzumi Gate is a massive 13.7-meter-high gate standing at the east exit of Kanazawa Station, designed to resemble the Tsuzumi (drum) used in "Kaga Hosho," Kanazawa's traditional performing art. Kanazawa Station is said to be one of "the world's most beautiful stations," and the station building itself has become a popular tourist attraction and major highlight on any Kanazawa guide map.

Tsuzumi Gate was installed as part of the station area facility improvements carried out before the Hokuriku Shinkansen opened to Kanazawa in 2015. It has now become a symbol of Kanazawa, and when I visited Kanazawa, I saw many tourists enjoying commemorative photos in front of Tsuzumi Gate in this iconic neighborhood.

The area from Tsuzumi Gate to the station building is covered by a glass "Motenashi Dome." The "Motenashi Dome" is not only beautiful in appearance but also thoughtfully designed to prevent travelers from getting wet in Kanazawa, where rain and snow are frequent.

Please experience the fusion of tradition and modern technology at Kanazawa Station, the gateway to your Kanazawa travel, as you map out your journey through this remarkable city.

Nishi Chaya District

Nishi Chaya District

Nishi Chaya District is characterized by its quiet atmosphere among the three tea house districts in Kanazawa. This peaceful neighborhood has fewer tourists compared to the previously introduced Higashi Chaya District. This tea house district, where you can enjoy beautiful traditional streetscapes while avoiding crowds, is my favorite spot as someone who likes to stroll leisurely at my own pace.

Nishi Chaya District features cafés run by long-established Japanese sweets shops that have continued since the Edo period, and Amanatto (sweetened beans) specialty shops where you can taste Japanese sweets within traditional architecture. You can enjoy exquisite Japanese sweets while relaxing in the charming streetscape, making it a perfect highlight for any neighborhood exploration.

Nishi Chaya District is within walking distance from popular tourist spots such as Katamachi, one of Kanazawa's leading entertainment districts, and Nagamachi Samurai District, where samurai of the Kaga Domain once lived. It's especially recommended for those who want to tour multiple spots while walking through Kanazawa's atmospheric streetscapes and using this area as a central point on their map.

21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa
Source:Wikipedia

The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa is a museum that opened in 2004 and symbolizes Kanazawa's contemporary art culture. This world-renowned museum primarily exhibits art works from 1980 onward that "propose new values."

The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa features many interactive art installations such as "Colour Activity House" and "The Swimming Pool," making it popular among both adults and children.

Moreover, this museum's circular building, designed by the famous Japanese architectural unit "SANAA," serves as an avant-garde art piece that blends seamlessly into Kanazawa's neighborhood. The glass-enclosed interior creates an open space filled with natural light, allowing visitors to experience different atmospheres depending on the time of day.

Chirihama Beach

Chirihama Beach

Chirihama Beach is a spectacular destination famous as Japan's only beach where cars can drive on the sand.

The secret behind Chirihama Beach's driveable sand lies in its fine grain structure. The sand particles, approximately 0.2mm each, absorb seawater and compact together, allowing cars, buses, and motorcycles to travel safely as they would on regular roads.

This beach stretches approximately 8km, and the main highlight is the exhilarating drive along the water's edge while feeling the ocean breeze. My personal recommendation is to visit Chirihama Beach in the evening. During this time, you can enjoy driving while watching the mystical scenery of the sunset sinking into the horizon.

Chirihama Beach is accessible from central Kanazawa in about 45 minutes by rental car or tour bus. Why not combine it with your map of Kanazawa's major tourist spots and enjoy the stunning scenery of the Sea of Japan?

Must-See for Foodies! Nationally Popular Kanazawa Cuisine

Kanazawa is a region rich in exquisite cuisine, including seafood dishes using fresh marine products, traditional local dishes, and Japanese sweets. I'll introduce Kanazawa cuisine that you can easily enjoy in Kanazawa city, centered around busy areas like around Kanazawa Station and Katamachi, so please check them out.

Seafood & Sushi

Seafood & Sushi

In Kanazawa, blessed with one of the Sea of Japan's premier fishing grounds, you can savor fresh seafood dishes such as seafood bowls and sushi.

In Kanazawa, you can enjoy not only staple fish like tuna, salmon, and yellowtail commonly found in sushi restaurants, but also Kanazawa's unique seafood delicacies such as "Blackthroat seaperch," a premium fish representing Kanazawa, and "sweet shrimp," which boasts one of the nation's highest catch volumes.

Since Kanazawa's seafood is highly fresh due to its proximity to fishing ports, it's easy for foreigners unaccustomed to raw fish to enjoy.

In Kanazawa, not only high-end sushi restaurants and luxury establishments but also Omicho Market and conveyor belt sushi restaurants offer excellent seafood dishes at reasonable prices, so be sure to try them.

Noto Beef

Noto Beef
Source:Yahoo! Travel

Noto beef is a premium brand beef raised in Ishikawa Prefecture, characterized by fine marbling and elegant sweetness. Due to its limited production, Noto beef is also called "phantom wagyu beef" and is rare wagyu beef that can only be tasted at select establishments within Ishikawa Prefecture.

Noto beef is typically enjoyed as steak, yakiniku (grilled meat), or sukiyaki (a Japanese dish where meat is lightly simmered in sweet and savory sauce). Among these, the eating style I, as a meat lover, would most recommend is steak, which allows you to taste the meat's natural flavor. Noto beef is exquisite—the more you chew, the more the high-quality fat's sweetness spreads in your mouth.

In Kanazawa city, Noto beef can be enjoyed at specialized yakiniku restaurants, izakaya, and Japanese cuisine restaurants. Since you're visiting Kanazawa, be sure to savor this premium wagyu beef that can only be tasted within Ishikawa Prefecture.

Kaga Ryori

Kaga Ryori
Source:Official website

Kaga Ryori is one of Japan's representative local cuisines that developed in Kanazawa, which flourished as one of Japan's leading castle towns during the Edo period.

Kaga Ryori is characterized by its use of local seasonal ingredients such as marine products from Ishikawa Prefecture and Kaga vegetables (traditional vegetables from Kanazawa). Additionally, Kaga Ryori is notable for its beautiful presentation using traditional crafts such as Kutani ware and Wajima lacquerware as serving dishes.

Kaga Ryori includes a diverse range of local dishes, including "Jibuni," which simmers duck meat and Kaga vegetables in broth, as well as tempura made with Gorojima Kintoki (sweet potatoes from Kanazawa) and Kaga lotus root.

Please enjoy Kanazawa's traditional flavors along with their elegant and beautiful Kanazawa-style presentation.

Kanazawa Curry

Kanazawa Curry
Source:Tabelog

Kanazawa curry is a local curry originating from Kanazawa, featuring curry rice with rich roux topped with cabbage and pork cutlet.

The greatest characteristic of Kanazawa curry is its roux, which is darker than regular curry rice, nearly black in color. By slowly roasting the flour and spices that form the base of the roux and then simmering the ingredients for a long time, the rich flavor unique to Kanazawa curry is created.

Additionally, the shredded cabbage topping and presentation on stainless steel plates are also unique styles of Kanazawa curry.

Kanazawa has several Kanazawa curry specialty shops including "Champion's CURRY" and "GoGo Curry." Since Kanazawa curry tastes different at each restaurant, it's interesting to compare them.

Sweets

Kintsuba

Kanazawa is one of Japan's premier "sweets kingdoms," offering everything from traditional Japanese confections to the latest desserts. Particularly in Kanazawa, where tea ceremony became popular during the Edo period, Japanese sweets enjoyed with matcha are indispensable, and traditional Japanese confections are still beloved by locals today.

In Kanazawa, you can taste various sweets made with local specialties such as gold leaf and Kaga Bocha (roasted tea). When I visit Kanazawa, it has become my standard way to spend time enjoying matcha and traditional Japanese sweets at tea houses and cafes in areas like Kenrokuen Garden, Higashi Chaya District, and Nishi Chaya District.

Kanazawa sweets are perfect as souvenirs not only for their flavors using local ingredients and specialties but also for their beautiful appearance featuring gold leaf and delicate Japanese-style colors.

In Kanazawa, you can experience different landscapes and events each season, centered around the nature-rich Kenrokuen Garden and Kanazawa Castle, as well as the atmospheric Higashi Chaya District that embodies Kanazawa's unique charm. At Kenrokuen Garden and Kanazawa Castle, illuminations are held at night during the cherry blossom season, allowing you to enjoy flower viewing in a fantastical atmosphere. As someone who loves the ephemeral cherry blossoms that bloom for a limited period, I find myself repeatedly capturing the beautiful scenery of cherry blossoms reflected in the pond with my camera.

Also, in spring Kanazawa, mountain vegetables such as bamboo shoots, as well as seafood like halfbeak and sea bream, reach their peak season.

Kanazawa-produced seasonal bamboo shoots are characterized by their strong sweetness and juiciness. The local Kanazawa dish of bamboo shoots simmered together with kelp is an exquisite cuisine unique to Kanazawa's spring.

You can enjoy bamboo shoot dishes and sushi using seasonal seafood at izakayas and sushi restaurants throughout Kanazawa city.

Among these, what you absolutely cannot miss when fully enjoying Kanazawa's autumn is the autumn foliage illumination event held at Kanazawa Castle and Kenrokuen Garden (held for limited periods on weekends from late October through November).

When I visited the illumination event, there was almost no wind, and I cannot forget the mystical scene where the water surface of the pond reflected the autumn foliage like a mirror.

Also, it's recommended to participate in events where you can experience Kanazawa's food and traditions, such as "SAKE MARCHE" (typically held in October), where you can enjoy local sake and local gourmet cuisine, and "Kanazawa Odori" (scheduled for September 20-23, 2025), where you can enjoy traditional performing arts by geishas from the three tea house districts.

Summer in Kanazawa (June to August)

Summer in Kanazawa

Summer in Kanazawa is the season when the city is most vibrant, with diverse events where you can actually experience traditional ceremonies and beautiful nature.

Among these, Kanazawa's largest festival "Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival" and "Kaga Yuzen Tourou Nagashi," where lanterns painted with traditional kimono patterns are floated down the Asano River, are must-see traditional events representing Kanazawa - true highlights of any summer Kanazawa Guide.

Also, during summer in Kanazawa, seafood such as Iwagaki oysters and squid, as well as Kaga vegetables like cucumbers and eggplants, reach their peak season.

Iwagaki oysters in particular are larger and more satisfying to eat compared to regular oysters that are in season during winter. At Omicho Market - easily found on any city map - there are shops where you can taste fresh Iwagaki oysters on the spot in this bustling market neighborhood.

Additionally, from June to July, you can observe fireflies at Kenrokuen Garden and Sotobori Park outside Kanazawa Castle. When I observed fireflies on a weekend, there were events where you could enjoy fireflies while listening to professional explanations, making it recommended for first-time firefly viewers.

Gokayama and Shirakawa-go

Gokayama and Shirakawa-go

Gokayama and Shirakawa-go are Gassho-zukuri village clusters registered as UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1995. Gassho-zukuri are traditional Japanese houses characterized by steep thatched roofs, developed to withstand heavy snow loads and strong winds in heavy snowfall regions.

In Gokayama and Shirakawa-go, traditional Gassho-zukuri houses line the pastoral landscape, offering spectacular views that represent Japan's original scenery. This neighborhood particularly highlights Japan's architectural heritage. Winter nights when snow accumulates on the thatched roofs create an especially magical experience, with illuminated traditional buildings appearing to float on the snow-covered landscape.

In Gokayama, the Ainokura and Suganuma settlements are registered as World Heritage sites, while in Shirakawa-go, the Ogimachi settlement holds this designation. When I actually entered and toured inside, I was overwhelmed by the traditional techniques and the sturdy, expansive spaces - an experience that remains memorable. Please don't just admire from outside, but definitely tour the interiors as well.

Travel time by bus from Kanazawa is approximately 1 hour to Gokayama and 1.5 hours to Shirakawa-go. Why not enjoy the spectacular scenery where magnificent nature and traditional rural houses harmonize, quite different from the vibrant streets of Kanazawa?

Noto

Noto
Source:NOTO Tourism Guide

The Noto Peninsula extends north from Kanazawa and is a popular tourist destination with rich nature surrounded by the Sea of Japan and unique culture that every Kanazawa guide should highlight.

Noto became the first region in Japan where "Noto's Satoyama and Satoumi" was recognized by Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems in 2011, with its sustainable agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, as well as biodiversity conservation, being highly evaluated internationally.

In this naturally charming neighborhood of Noto, there are many spots where you can enjoy beautiful spectacular views, including the "Shiroyone Senmaida" terraced rice fields that spread toward the sea.

Additionally, attractive highlights include the "Wajima Morning Market" with over 1,000 years of history and traditional crafts like "Wajima lacquerware," offering unique cultural experiences available only in Noto.

Noto is still in the process of recovery following the January 2024 earthquake that affected tourist areas. That's precisely why in current Noto, you can feel the powerful energy toward reconstruction and Japan's characteristic warmth.

Three Things People Visiting Kanazawa Should Check in Advance

Kanazawa Tourism Recommended for 1 Night 2 Days or More

To fully enjoy Kanazawa tourism without missing anything, it's advisable to secure at least 1 night and 2 days. While Kanazawa's main tourist spots are concentrated within a 2km radius, sufficient time is needed to thoroughly enjoy each attraction's highlights. Visiting all major spots in Kanazawa city requires at least a full day.

Moreover, with 2 or more nights, you can also enjoy surrounding tourist areas like Kaga Onsen, Gokayama and Shirakawa-go, and Noto. Since Kanazawa has many spots where you can stroll while feeling traditional streetscapes and greenery, it's recommended to plan your itinerary with plenty of time to slowly savor the city - this approach makes for the best Kanazawa guide experience.

Need to Prepare for Winter Cold Snaps & Large Temperature Differences

Kanazawa is known for having many rainy days throughout the year, with significant snowfall in winter. Kanazawa's temperatures vary greatly by season, with winter lows around 1°C and summer highs exceeding 30°C. Especially when visiting Kanazawa in winter, cold weather measures like thick coats, scarves, and waterproof boots are necessary - important details to highlight on any travel map.

Additionally, while spring and autumn are comfortable with light layers, mornings and evenings are often cold. During transitional seasons like spring and autumn, clothing that allows easy temperature adjustment is recommended. Prepare clothing appropriate for each season's climate to comfortably enjoy your Kanazawa trip.

Rental Cars Enable Efficient Tourism Enjoyment

While buses and walking are sufficient for visiting only the main spots within Kanazawa city, rental car use is recommended for those wanting to tour efficiently or enjoy surrounding tourist areas. In fact, I used a rental car when traveling from Kanazawa to Gokayama, Shirakawa-go, and Noto - this neighborhood-hopping approach worked excellently.

For example, reaching Kaga Onsen, Gokayama and Shirakawa-go, or Noto usually requires train and bus connections. Using a rental car allows smooth travel via highways and efficient time use without worrying about train and bus schedules.

Also, those visiting "Chirihama Beach," Japan's only beach where cars can drive, should definitely enjoy the special experience of driving on the sand yourself - a unique highlight that deserves a special spot on any Kanazawa guide map.
