As a fellow travel enthusiast, I often find myself leaving destinations without having experienced the shops, events, and spots that locals truly love. I don't want foreign tourists to later regret thinking "I should have gone there," which is why I'm writing this article.

To help eliminate travel regrets, we at Magical Trip also offer local tours led by locals. Because our guides take you to spots where you can fully experience local culture and cuisine that only locals know about, Magical Trip's tours were selected as TripAdvisor's No.1 tours in 2024.

In Kanazawa, we offer two tours:

  1. The "Kanazawa Half-day Historical Walking Tour" where you can explore one of Japan's most remarkable historic neighborhoods while listening to commentary from a local guide

I hope your trip to Kanazawa becomes a truly wonderful journey!

Introduction

Kanazawa is the prefectural capital of Ishikawa prefecture. It's the largest city in the Hokuriku area in northern Japan, with vibrant downtown districts. It's also known as a city that flourished greatly during the Edo era, preserving historical streetscapes and remaining a beautiful city where traditions endure.

Kanazawa is also a region that receives heavy snowfall in winter. In July, Kanazawa's daytime temperatures reach around 30°C (86°F), but compared to Tokyo which often records extreme heat exceeding 35°C (95°F), it's slightly cooler. Nights are comfortable at around 26°C (78°F).

In Kanazawa, many events where you can experience Japanese traditions are held in July. In this article, we'll introduce the highlights and basic information about events held in July 2026, including schedules and access to the venues.

6 Traditional Events to Enjoy in Kanazawa in July 2026

Here are six events where you can enjoy Japanese traditions in Kanazawa. A characteristic of Kanazawa Event July 2026 festivals is that many offer a sense of coolness even in the hot summer. Many events are also held at night, so you can enjoy them throughout the day.

Hokkoku Fireworks Festival

The "Hokkoku Firework Festival" is a fireworks event that Kanazawa citizens look forward to every year. Fireworks are a classic Japanese summer tradition held throughout the country, but the Hokkoku Firework Festival is one of the largest fireworks events in Japan.

12,000 fireworks light up the night sky, with dynamic star mines utilizing the riverbank, uniquely shaped character fireworks, and many other spectacular sights. The finale featuring 1,000 consecutive fireworks is a must-see with its overwhelming power and beauty.

Around the main venue of the Firework Festival, food stalls are set up, and you'll see many locals dressed in traditional summer "Kimono" called "Yukata." This is one of the events I confidently recommend where you can enjoy traditional Japanese summer.

Kanazawa Castle and Kenroku-en Four Seasons Story (Firefly Viewing Event)

Next to "Kanazawa Castle" in the center of Kanazawa city is a beautiful Japanese garden called "Kenrokuen Garden." This historical garden was created in 1676, and every summer, firefly viewing events are held.

Japanese fireflies emit light at night, creating a beautiful, mystical world. They are insects beloved for heralding the arrival of early summer, and I also look forward to seeing the firefly lights every year.

Fireflies are delicate insects that can only live in clean waterside environments. Despite being in the center of Kanazawa city, Kenrokuen is filled with rich nature where fireflies can thrive. Since it's also an attractive garden, when you come to Kanazawa city, enjoy exploring Kenrokuen during the daytime as well as attending the firefly viewing!

Yuwaku Bonbori Festival Lighting Ceremony

The "Yuwaku Bonbori festival" began from the anime "Hanasaku Iroha." Although it was originally a fictional festival portrayed in the anime, it has become a seasonal tradition in Yuwaku since it was first held in 2011. The magical sight of Japanese lanterns called "Bonbori" lining a 500-meter-long staircase is truly enchanting. As a fan of Hanasaku Iroha, I was moved to tears by this spectacular Kanazawa event July 2026 will feature once again.

The Bonbori are lit daily from July until the main festival in October.

Yuwaku, where the Bonbori festival is held, is also a hot spring area. The anime Hanasaku Iroha is set in an old hot spring inn, and it beautifully captures the nature and people of Kanazawa city and Ishikawa prefecture. I highly recommend watching the anime before visiting the Bonbori festival!

Kanazawa Asanogawa Garden Party - Shirakawa Riverside Dining

There are three places in Kanazawa where you can meet Geiko. Establishments where you can enjoy Geiko dancing and performances while dining are called "Chaya." In the riverside area of the Higashi Chaya district in the eastern part of the city, every summer you can enjoy a special dining experience called "Kawadoko," which are Japanese-style terraces set up along the river where you can enjoy meals while watching Geiko performances.

Kawadoko is an ideal space to enjoy Japanese summer nightlife, savoring elaborate Japanese cuisine while feeling the cool river breeze.

Additionally, while tourists rarely have the opportunity to enter regular Chaya establishments (which typically require personal connections), Kawadoko is open to tourists, allowing them to enjoy a dining experience similar to Chaya. This exceptional Kanazawa event July 2026 offers visitors a rare glimpse into traditional entertainment.

Kanazawa Geiko Summer Practice Scene Special Experience

During the Edo era that began in the 1600s, Kanazawa was the fourth most populous city after Edo (Tokyo), Osaka, and Kyoto. With this population concentration came cultural development, and around 1820, "Kanazawa Geiko" became active in the city.

Geiko are women who perform traditional Japanese dance and music for guests at inns and restaurants. In Kanazawa, you can still see Geiko wearing traditional hairstyles and kimono unchanged since those times.

Every Saturday in July and August 2026, Kanazawa event July 2026 calendars highlight this rare opportunity to observe Geiko practicing music and dance. Even as a Japanese person, seeing the everyday practice of these elegant Geiko is a fascinating experience. You can also try playing taiko drums with the Geiko, so those interested in traditions should definitely participate. (Reservations are required, so please book through the website before attending.)

Must-See Events to Enjoy When Visiting Kanazawa in July

In addition to the five traditional events introduced earlier, here are four more events to enjoy when visiting Kanazawa in July 2026. Kanazawa offers a rich variety of events where you can experience the sea, city, and nature all in one place.

Jimyo-in Temple Lotus Pond Viewing Ceremony

Jimyo-in Temple is a peaceful sanctuary located a short distance from downtown Kanazawa. It's beloved for its impressive lotus pond where beautiful lotus flowers bloom in summer.

The lotus found at Jimyo-in Temple is called "Myoren" (妙蓮), an extremely rare variety worldwide that can only be seen in two locations throughout Japan. Each flower consists of an astonishing 1,500-3,000 petals and blooms to approximately 20cm in diameter.

Myoren is said to have been brought to Japan when a Japanese monk called "Kukai" traveled to Tang dynasty China in the 700s and received seeds from an Indian monk. This historically significant flower creates a sense of tranquility as it blooms majestically. The viewing period is quite short, from late July to early August, so if you're in Kanazawa during this time, it's definitely worth a visit.

The Kanazawa Night Museum is an art event held annually from summer to fall. This engaging Kanazawa event offers art and concerts at night, allowing you to enjoy a more enriching nightlife experience. For visitors planning their trips in July 2026, this is definitely an event to include in your itinerary.

During the event, more than 30 programs are held, including concerts by singers active in Kanazawa, special nighttime museum openings, and illuminated temples. The temple illuminations are one of my favorite parts of the event that I look forward to every year, as you can experience a different kind of beauty compared to daytime views. The opening event's projection mapping is also creative and a must-see.

This year, it's scheduled to begin in early August, so if you're planning to visit Kanazawa in late July 2026 and continue your sightseeing into August, be sure to check this out.
